August 2014 with onnect Kith & Kin gets invite to National ACOSS conference Kith & Kin were invited to attend the ACOSS National Conference 2014 in Brisbane. The Chairman of our Board of Directors Anthony Denyer attended to give a presentation on the strategies Kith & Kin have implemented to become more sustainable. The theme of the event was ‘Global problems, local solutions: Tackling inequality in Australia and beyond’. Anthony presented to MP’s and many of Australia’s Government representatives. Anthony’s session was ‘Sector sustainability: A people powered response to rising energy prices and climate change’. In this session, two of Queensland’s leaders in sustainability and energy efficiency shared their experiences of reducing their electricity usage throughout their organisation and freed up tens of thousands of dollars for more important things. Anthony spoke about how Kith & Kin, a small, resourceful community organisation managed to reduce electricity bills to zero, and save $8,000 a year in electricity costs. Kith & Kin are also members of QCOSS. Kith & Kin’s CEO Alfred Wimblett presented a case study about how Kith & Kin began a journey towards environmental sustainability and ended up saving money in the process. This is a huge achievement for Kith & Kin and we are proud to be National leaders of sustainability. Brodie, Sam and Bradley attended the Townsville 500 Super Welcome where the V8 drivers were taking part in signing autographs for the fans. The guys said “We enjoyed the drinks and food and we had a look at the fancy cars as part of the Townsville collectables club.” They went to Auto barn where the Red Bull Racing V8 Supercar team was signing their autographs. Brodie got an autograph and picture with the drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup. They also said they enjoyed the Sausage Sizzle too!

Brodie has been attending South Pacific Taekwondo sessions for 6 weeks, he received a brochure through the mail advertising the classes and decided this would be something he would like to take part in. Brodie started on a white belt and after a few weeks he received a high distinction and skipped to a yellow belt. Brodie said “The meditation part of taekwondo is good for my mind, it keeps me fit and flexible and I use muscles I never thought I had before.” Brodie attends Taekwondo four nights a week and the grading takes place every 3 months. Around 10 people attend each session and Brodie has made many friends there. Brodie said, “If I could sum up the experience in one sentence I would say that the meditation process is just half the journey.” Keep up the good work Brodie and thank you for sharing your success with Konnect.

Welcome to the next level! Brodie skips a belt in Taekwondo

Kith & Kin’s CEO shares his holiday experience with Konnect. I recently took some long service leave. With my wife and son, we went to visit some family members in the UK and stopped at various countries along the way. I love traveling, love adventure, love seeing how other people live, but most of all, I love coming home. It's the simple things you miss, like watching TV in English, or your own pillow or bed. However, on the flip side, you are also reminded about how little you actually need. I think we really do live in the lucky country, even if many people here don't seem to realise it. I'm glad to be back at work and missed everyone here. I would also like to thank everyone who took the time to welcome me back. Kith and Kin is a great place to work, and I am really lucky to be surrounded by so many great people, doing great things.

This is your friendly sports reporter’s Brennan and Vern with another action filled sports report for you and haven’t we had a busy month. Firstly we went to Jezzine Barracks to welcome the V8 Supercar drivers to Townsville. It was a cool night but it seems most of Townsville’s sports fans came to meet Russell Ingall for photos and an autograph. We recently attended the Monster Trucks at the show grounds. It was another cool clear night and again it seemed all of Townsville has welcomed them to town. Make no mistake this was an awesome night with many spectacles. We witnessed Super cross riders performing death defining stunts. A jet powered quad bike with afterburners shooting flames out the back. Then came the Monster Trucks, Outback Thunder, Big Give, Tassie Devil, Spot and the one who everyone came to see BIG FOOT!!! The guys that drive these trucks are awesome. They smashed into jumps made from old cars and the sound was deafening. We saw them drop and smash an old car from the top of a crane with fireworks and booming sound effects to go with it. It was a great night. Well that’s your friendly Kith & Kin sports reporter’s signing out for another month. Stay tuned we will be reporting form another cool event again shortly.

We would like to remember and recognise the passing of Alec Crowley. Alec was one hell of a character who

had plenty of adventures, misadventures and stories to tell.

Alec was a huge supporter of Kith & Kin who regularly volunteered to speak

to our independent auditors. Alec had been a client at Kith & Kin for

14 years and will be missed.

We all have a responsibility to ourselves and our colleagues to keep an eye out for any potential

hazards. Hazards can occur anywhere, so it is essential to be

alert at all times. A slip of the mind can lead to an actual slip!
