InvisiTaskingTechnology in Diskeeper 2007—

Exciting New technology automates diskdefragmentation for optimal performanceDiskeeper made its reputation with the trademarked phrase“Set It and Forget It”®, meaning you just scheduled Diskeeperand forgot about it. Defragmentation was done on a scheduledbasis keeping systems at peak performance and reliability.

Times change though. Disk drives have grown to exponen-tially large proportions. With the growth of disk drives hascome an explosion in the size and number of files storedon disk drives. With terabyte drives (a trillion bytes) nowreadily available and smaller drives selling for very littlemoney, you can store a LOT of stuff—practically anything. And file sizes continue to increase as well.

Documents with embedded graphics, large presentations, scanned images, multi-media files, etc., are now residing onhard drives. The vast quantities of these and their inordi-nate size (plus the fact that these media files need to residecontiguously on a disk for optimal use) present new chal-lenges for computer performance and reliability, makingdefragmentation more critical than ever.

As disks grow bigger and files grow larger and more numer-ous, defragmentation is required more and more often tomaintain a computer’s peak performance and reliability. This makes it absolutely vital to handle disk fragmentationas soon as it occurs. But scheduling a resource-intensivetask—such as daily or even hourly defragmentation—canbe a scary proposition for IT staff.

System tasks such as defragmentation, backups and mal-ware scans are therefore often scheduled for off-hours, orduring downtime. This approach is taken to minimize theinterference caused by maintenance. Waiting for scheduledmaintenance tasks, however, can introduce negativeeffects between scheduled activities, and it can bringabout unavoidable negligence in mission-critical serversthat cannot be taken off-line.

Additionally, the scheduling itself is a maintenance chorewhich adds administrative overhead. IT staff need toensure scheduling is understood and correctly set for eachsystem. Follow-up is needed—did the job run? Is it com-plete, and so on?

InvisiTasking—Completely Automatic,Undetectable DefragmentationWhile many software products attempt to run invisibly in thebackground and some strides have been made, completeand utter transparency on mission-critical systems hasnever before been achieved—until now.

InvisiTasking is a remarkable new technology which enablesDiskeeper 2007 to run invisibly with absolutely no intrusionon system resources. As CPU and I/O resources are almostnever fully utilized, InvisiTasking’s transparency is achieved byundetectably tapping into these unused system resources.

Software engineers sometimes attempt to share resources bychoosing lower CPU priorities to run under, and past effortshave been made at throttling disk I/O. Windows allocates CPUresources using a kind of hybrid round robin/priority based,pre-emptive scheduling. One aspect of this scheme can causelow priority processes to unnecessarily pre-empt higher priorityprocesses, starving them of CPU resources.

InvisiTasking utilizes a technique to avoid using a com-puter’s resources when higher priority processes need torun. InvisiTasking takes a proactive approach to instantlydetect resource usage, ensuring that Diskeeper never pre-empts users or primary services on a computer system.InvisiTasking is so good that it is all but impossible to evendetect whether Diskeeper 2007 is running.

It’s important to note that InvisiTasking is far more advancedthan any low-priority I/O approaches that do “I/O throttling.”First off, InvisiTasking goes beyond I/O to address all systemresource usage. With Low Priority I/O approaches, there canstill be some contention for resources at the disk and it doesnothing to address other system resources. It applies a pro-active (rather than re-active) approach designed to trulydeliver background operation.

InvisiTasking is essentially a resource delegation frameworkallowing the OS to operate at a higher efficiency. InvisiTasking

Page 4: With InvisiTasking Technologystorage.diskeeper.com/28117/pdf/DKC_Newskeeper_1206.pdf · processes, starving them of CPU resources. InvisiTasking utilizes a technique to avoid using

achieves across-the-board compatibility by allowing applica-tions and services to operate under an additional layer ofresource allocation. When operating in the InvisiTaskingframework, even I/O intensive processes are able to achievetransparency.

Diskeeper 2007 with InvisiTasking—Truly AutomaticDiskeeper 2007 is designed to go to work on the fly inreal-time—when needed. Since it runs transparently withno intrusion on system resources, no scheduling is neededby IT staff. Defragmentation begins almost immediately. As automatic as the sun rising and setting, Diskeeperkeeps systems running at optimum speed and reliability atall times. The result? Less downtime, less work and troublefor IT staff and boosted user productivity. That is why maxi-mum benefit to you comes from deploying Diskeeper onevery system you manage.

You may be skeptical at first that InvisiTasking has virtuallyno impact on system overhead. For this reason, you can

schedule times when Diskeeper is prevented from running.Eventually, we’re sure you’ll be convinced and this type oflock-out scheduling will be forgotten. You’ll see the benefitsof running Diskeeper on every system. The scheduling erais over and the era of truly automatic, invisible defragmen-tation has begun.

Someday in the future, could all system maintenance activ-ities be done in real-time as needed, even on criticalservers with round-the-clock uptime? With InvisiTasking, webelieve so. Such a paradigm shift would mark the end ofscheduling and scripting maintenance tasks and allow fortruly automatic processing.

“As usual, Diskeeper keeps gettingbetter and faster. I have been usingyour product since it first became avail-able. It does a great job, and solves alot of problems for end-users. My ASPbusiness depends on your software forour mission-critical servers.”

—J. Massey, President,Out of the Blue Solutions, Inc.

“This latest upgrade is even easier touse than the previous versions. I havebeen using Diskeeper for many yearsnow and I am finding the latest versionto be truly fully automatic when itcomes to defragmenting. I especiallylike the constant monitoring and back-ground defragmenting. The ‘I-FAAST’technology is also great. I think that it istruly a breakthrough in allowing fasteraccess to most frequently used files.

“I have found the defragmenter easyto install (this was an upgrade/update) and even easier to use.

Actually, I don’t need to do anything,as Diskeeper takes care of defrag-mentation for me.

“Keep up the good work and the con-stant innovation. It is a pleasure touse software that works so well.”

—S. Sloshberg, Supervisor

“The upgrade from previous versionwas painless. No scheduling needed, yet it kept my previous settings!”

—L.Wright, Network Engineer

“I was first acquainted with Diskeeperwhile I was working as a systems man-ager for an OpenVMS system atGeorgetown University. We acquired alicense and ran the product on the Alpha2100 in a maintenance schedule.

“I acquired a desktop for work and con-figured it with NT Workstation in 1998.It was a powerful Pentium processor—top of the line in those days. It worked

wonderfully, but the per formancebegan to degrade. NTFS was advertisedto be “fragment free,” if I recall. (Nottrue.) Diskeeper Corporation came tothe answer and offered a workstationproduct modeled after the OpenVMSproduct. I immediately purchased alicense and experienced the benefits. The workstation ran like a top from thenforward. Several of my colleagues wereimpressed by my experience andacquired licenses of their own. We allagreed, a desktop version would besweet, but likely unavailable given themid-range systems origin of the prod-uct…. Could such a great technology berepackaged into a desktop productwithout tearing down the mid-range sys-tems market? We could only hope.

“I purchased more licenses ofDiskeeper Professional Edition and ranthe software on a rigorous schedule.

Reliable DataProtection withUndelete Recover lost files Instantly!

Even “saved over” versionsof Microsoft® Office files!

How many users have called your Help Desk in a panicsaying they’ve lost or overwritten a critically importantfile? The Windows server recycle bin doesn’t protectfiles deleted by network clients. Restoring files frombackup takes forever, and may not get the latest versionof the file. And neither backup nor “snapshots” can helpif a user has saved over the version he or she needs.

Now there is a solution—new Undelete 5! Undelete 5replaces the recycle bin with a Recovery Bin that cap-tures and protects all deleted files, no matter how theywere deleted. Undelete works in real time, so it alwayshas the latest version of the file—and in the case ofMicrosoft Word®, Excel® and PowerPoint® files, it caneven recover earlier “saved-over” versions.

Best yet, recovering files with Undelete 5 is instant—allit takes is a few clicks of the mouse. Undelete 5 evengives you the option of letting users recover their ownfiles from server Recovery Bins!

• Undelete 5 Server Edition captures and protects deleted files on your servers.

• Undelete 5 Client allows network users torecover their deleted files from the server.

• Undelete 5 Professional Edition provideslocal file protection plus client functionality.

“We are very happy with the product and its extremeease of use. It’s true that I can generally get lost filesfrom my backup tapes, but using Undelete is muchfaster and easier. Undelete also lets me restore lostfiles that haven’t been backed up to tape, but wereeither modified incorrectly or deleted.”

—Jeff Vargason, Barr Nunn Transportation, Inc.

Diskeeper combined with AntiVirus and AntiSpyware, the sys-tems were rescued from a spiral of performance degrada-tion. I trialed the I-FAAST technology in the Diskeeper ProPremier, and I was sold immediately.

“You also have great customer service. You have made mea lifetime customer!

“Thank you, Diskeeper, for your excellent product and youroutstanding support. We have a long and valuable relation-ship, and I will recommend your product to all who run‘fraggy systems.’”

—E. Skinner, A Large Hotel Chain

“I have always been impressed by Diskeeper software. I usedDiskeeper 7 at home before I even got my first IT job. Then, when I found myself in a position to present a defragmenta-tion solution for our company, I already knew where to start.

“At that time Diskeeper 10 was the current version and Icontacted the sales department to get a quote. We pur-chased 100 workstation and 5 server licenses; whichenabled us to receive Diskeeper Administrator at no charge. We also purchased the maintenance package, and I’m soglad we did! A few months after I deployed Diskeeper 10throughout two locations (we’re now ‘topped-up’), I receivedan email letting me know that the newest version Diskeeper2007 was ready for download.

“Smart Scheduling™ in v10 was great; Automatic Defrag-mentation in v2007 is awesome! Everything I loved aboutv10, from the interface and ease of use to the control thatthe Administrator edition provides, all became even better.Sleek new tweak on the interface, slightly reordered menusand a flow-chart-style Getting Started page completelyenhance the administrator experience.

“The new Dashboard area is much more robust than itspredecessor and provides precision information. Real-timedefragmentation status and idle resources usage along witheliminated fragments reports and volume health recom-mendations bring the most important information to youright up front.

“I can honestly credit Diskeeper with eliminating performancedegradation throughout the locations I am responsible for. Nomore general system slowness or application hangs due toheavy fragmentation; it has proven to be an invaluable tool.”
