Dear Friend,

“We are co-workers with God,” wrote the Apostle Paul to the believers in Corinth (1 Corinthians 3:9). What an amazing honour that the Creator of the world, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, chooses to involve us in accomplishing His purposes.

One of God’s purposes is the salvation of those who put their trust in Him. This spiritual deliverance from sin by Christ’s atoning death on the cross is the primary meaning of soteria, the New Testament word for salvation. But yasa, the word used most frequently in the Old Testament for salvation, commonly speaks of physical deliverance and rescue. So salvation covers both the spiritual and the physical dimensions of life.

God cares about the whole person: body, mind and spirit. He offers us the privilege of labouring alongside Him in His work. Praise Him for the wonder of this! Barnabas Fund is one way in which you can fulfil this calling, through your gifts and prayers for the projects you will read about in the following pages.

In this Gifts Catalogue you will find many ways that you, your small group or your church can give a gift to Christians facing persecution, discrimination and poverty because of their love for the Lord Jesus Christ. By adopting a project, you can make a lasting, transformational difference to the lives of Christian brothers and sisters who are standing firm in their faith in the midst of trial.

Each page of this booklet focuses on a particular area of need and suggests individual gifts, which could make a thoughtful alternative birthday

or Christmas gift. We can also supply an attractive Thank You card to send to the person on whose behalf you have made the donation. For details of the different Thank You cards available see page 14.

Growing your gift If you are a UK taxpayer and you sign the Gift Aid Declaration on page 13, we can claim an additional 25p from the government for every £1 you donate, so your support goes even further at no extra cost to you. Regular gifts allow us to plan strategically, respond quickly to urgent situations, and also help to keep our administrative costs low. Our regular donations form can be found on page 14.

Please prayerfully consider your response to the needs outlined in the following pages and give as the Lord leads. Pray also for the projects described and those they seek to help. May you be blessed as you stand in the gap for the suffering Body of Christ.

Yours in Christ’s service,

THE RT REV. AND RT HON. THE LORD CAREY OF CLIFTON Patron of Barnabas Fund

REFERENCE NUMBER: 41-1356 PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN BRICK KILN WORKERS

Saved from modern slavery Pakistani brick kiln workers

Making bricks is backbreaking work, in slave-like conditions, for Nadeem and his wife, and many Pakistani Christians like them

Sobia’s hands are covered in clay. Every day at 5.00am she starts work at the brick kiln. With her father, she works to make the day’s quota of bricks; after they have finished they prepare the clay for the next day. Sobia never went to school because her mother died and she had to join her father at the kiln to earn money to support the family

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor … to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” (Luke 4:18) (ESV)

Nadeem and his wife work in a brick kiln. Like many impoverished Christians in the same line of work in Pakistan, Nadeem is in debt to the kiln owner – because without borrowing from their employers it is almost impossible to survive financially during the monsoon months, when the heavy rain prevents them making bricks. Three years ago, Nadeem and his family were sold by his first employer; they have just been sold again for the cost of their debt (215,000 Rupees, or £1,500). Their new employer wants all five of their children – the

youngest is three years old – to work making bricks too and has insisted they work on Sundays. The family can no longer go to church.

Barnabas Fund is already working with families in the brick kilns to provide schooling for children and literary classes for adults, as well as monthly food parcels. But we have also started a new initiative – not just to help lift their children out of poverty, but to save whole families and set them free.

This will include paying off their loans, which will set them free to get other work if they choose. It will also include vocational training for the young people to equip them with skills for other kinds of employment.

£39 could educate one child

of a brick kiln family for one year

£18 could enable one adult from a

brick kiln community to learn to read, write and add up

£22 could pay for a monthly food

parcel for one brick kiln family

Typical debts are £1,500 to £2,500 per family

Saving Christians dying of hunger

He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. (Psalm 146:7)

When news of the drought and famine sweeping East Africa broke early in 2017, Barnabas Fund responded swiftly with food aid distributed through churches and Christian ministries.

At the time of writing, lifesaving food aid supplied through Project Joseph has reached over 156,500 people in Kenya and Uganda, roughly half of them being refugees from South Sudan.

Barnabas Fund is also supplying more than a million meals a month to desperate, starving believers in Zimbabwe. “I just want to say a big thank you for your kindly love and support you are showing us here … surely you bring back life and hope in us” – Mr Moyo, a 68-year-old pastor.

Last year Barnabas feeding programmes assisted 252,466 Christians in 17 countries. We helped those facing the threat of imminent starvation and those struggling to make ends meet in minority contexts where they are discriminated against (it is often difficult for believers to find secure employment through which they can earn enough to support their families). Barnabas assists needy believers in Pakistan and Egypt with regular food parcels. We are also continuing to provide basic provisions for believers who have fled Islamist violence in Iraq and Syria.

Water

Christian community in Sri Lanka

A water pump provided by Barnabas Fund in Pakistan

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. (Isaiah 12:3)

It can be all too easy to take turning on a tap for granted. Where Christians live as a hated and despised minority, access to adequate water facilities for drinking and sanitation is not guaranteed – sometimes Christians are even deliberately prevented from drawing water from communal sources. Persecution and poverty combine to leave many Christian communities reliant on inadequate or dangerous water; even where believers have access to water sources, many poorer families may still need to carry water on foot over considerable distances.

The small, marginalised Christian community in a fishing village in a majority Hindu area of eastern Sri Lanka had no safe water source until Barnabas Fund intervened. So close to the sea, the available water was polluted and salty. Now, the community have a 100-foot-deep tube well, life-giving water that the believers are using for drinking and to create a community garden – they are even able to share with their neighbours to show the love of Christ.

Supporting Barnabas Fund’s water projects provide not only water, but also a more secure way of living, leading to improved health and quality of life for persecuted or poor Christian families who do not have access to mains water supplies.

Saving the Santal Christians

The plans include brick houses, with shared toilets and tube wells, and a school

Forced to flee as their homes were torched by local police and Muslims, the Santal Christians from Gaibandah now live in makeshift tents, their land taken from them

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people … So I have come down to rescue them.” (Exodus 3:7-8)

On 6 November 2016, police in riot gear marched into the Santal Christian community in Gaibandah District, Bangladesh. Firing rubber bullets as they went, they evicted the Christians. Local Muslims and the police then torched the Christians’ mostly wooden homes. The Santal fled, forced to leave everything behind. Their houses burned on into the night. Three Christians were killed in the assault.

Dijen Tadu was shot in the face, eyes and head with rubber bullets – after seven months of hospital treatment he still cannot work in sunlight. Having lost their farmland following the attack, Dijen’s wife Olivia now works as a day labourer to feed their three sons.

The Santal people are an ancient ethnic minority indigenous to north-west Bangladesh. The first Santal church was built in 1867. They are used to persecution, having experienced years of exploitation and injustice from the Muslim-majority Bengalis. The community in Gaibandah were driven from their homes in November 2016 so that their land could be seized to cultivate sugar cane – there is a government-owned sugar factory nearby.

Barnabas Fund is acting to bring hope and a future to the Santal Christian community from Gaibandah – answering the call of God to partner with Him to help save His people. The first phase will include the building of 50 new homes on safe, church-owned land, as well as repairing the school, at a total cost of £56,000. More phases are currently being planned.

But those who suffer He delivers in their suffering; He speaks to them in their affliction. (Job 36:15)

On Palm Sunday 2017, Islamic State suicide bombers targeted two Egyptian churches. The blasts killed 45 people and left more than 100 injured. Barnabas Fund is helping with the ongoing medical treatment of 38 Christians who were badly hurt. In the last year, Barnabas Fund assisted 17,878 victims of violence and injustice in 19 countries.

For believers in many countries, the possibility of violence is an everyday reality, with converts from Islam particularly at risk. In one country in Central Asia, Muslims assaulted a Christian convert from Islam so badly she was hospitalised; then they set the family’s house on fire. Barnabas Fund has provided a place to live for “Mira” and her children in a different town; local Christians are raising money to enable her to open a small market stall.

Barnabas Fund helps with the everyday needs of Christians who have experienced violence and injustice by providing emergency aid for those displaced by violence, medical care for the injured, safe houses and refuges, and legal representation for those falsely accused. We also support widows in several countries whose husbands have been murdered for their faith, by helping with living and housing costs.

Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (Deuteronomy 4:9)

Last year, Barnabas Fund supported the education of 9,772 Christian children in twelve countries. Barnabas Fund has helped to construct at least 84 Christian schools in 15 countries – providing 15,500 school places which have given many tens of thousands of children the opportunity of an education.

Seven-year-old Daniel – who attends a Barnabas-funded school in Pakistan – says, “My favourite subject is maths. I have learnt my multiplication tables by heart. My favourite verse is John 3:16 … I have three best friends in school. We play and study together. We love to share our lunch as well; my teacher says sharing is a kind act. I want to become a pilot when I grow up.” His father is delighted: “For

us it is very difficult to guide our children because we are not well educated … Our children are getting religion education here as well so they are growing spiritually. It is a perfect combination.”

Children growing up in countries where Christians are in the minority are often victimised in government-run schools, even being marked down in their work and failed in exams. In some cases, Christian children have suffered physical violence at school because of their faith. Barnabas assists Christian schools by funding teachers’ salaries, learning materials and other running costs. As a result of this support, Christian schools are able to provide places for minimal fees, so that even the most impoverished Christian parents can give their children the chance to learn and to grow in their faith in a safe, welcoming Christian environment.

Small businesses

“See” and her family have developed their own mushroom farm with support from Barnabas Fund

REFERENCE NUMBER: 00-356 SMALL BUSINESS START-UP FUND

The work of their hands brings them reward (Proverbs 12:14)

In many countries, Christians face discrimination in the jobs market because of their faith. It is hard for them to get employment, especially if they are a convert from the majority religion, and even harder to get a promotion. Or they may be paid less than those of the majority religion for the same tasks. Instead of working as a maid in the houses of Muslim families – where she would be at grave risk of abuse and exploitation – Kinza has been trained

as a seamstress and given a sewing machine through the help of Barnabas Fund. “I was worried that I will have to work as a maid … but I’m very grateful to the Lord who provided me with a great opportunity to learn stitching dresses, reading and writing … my life has been transformed. Now I am a skilful lady, I have stitched more than 400 dresses till today, therefore I am able to earn for my family and for my better future.” Kinza can now help support her family safely, working from her own home.

Barnabas Fund assists believers to acquire the vocational skills and/or

start-up materials they need to set up their own small businesses so they can provide for themselves and their families. Last year Barnabas helped 412 Christians in seven countries to become economically self-supporting with their own small businesses. Your gift could transform a persecuted believer’s prospects by funding a catering hospitality course for a young believer in Myanmar (Burma), providing equipment for a Christian widow in Kyrgyzstan to set up her own hairdressing business, or enabling a persecuted Christian family in South-East Asia to start their own mushroom cultivation business.

My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. (Psalm 119:50)

“May the Lord bless you all richly. We as a family will never forget your support over the years as when it has really mattered Barnabas Fund has acted not merely with words but practically/financially and stood with us shoulder to shoulder in the midst of our adversity and suffering to get us back on our feet” – Nissar Hussain, from Bradford, UK, who was beaten and hospitalised for leaving Islam to follow Christ. Barnabas has assisted Nissar and his family with family needs, security measures, legal costs and, recently, by helping his family to move to a safer location.

In the last year, we came to the aid of many hundreds of converts from Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism in six countries. Many of them had been rejected and experienced violence from their families and communities. Barnabas works to provide practical and spiritual support for converts by assisting local initiatives that provide specialised discipleship training, pastoral care, new livelihoods and safe places for converts to live so they can begin to rebuild their lives.

Your gift could fund discipleship and vocational skills training for Ugandan converts – in one year alone, Barnabas helped train 200 Ugandan converts, most of whom were women. We have also provided food for Afghan converts from Islam who have been forced to flee their home country, and enabled convert children in Azerbaijan to attend a Christian summer camp.

We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith. (1 Thessalonians 3:2)

Last year, Barnabas helped to support 305 pastors, church-planters and evangelists serving the Lord full-time in 21 countries. They are ministering in their own countries (or to their own people-groups) in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Many face great hostility and opposition but, by supporting them through Barnabas Fund, you can enable them to fulfil their God-given calling to share the Gospel and strengthen the faith of God’s people.

Many congregations are too poor to be able to pay a pastor full-time, meaning pastors have to find other employment to cover their daily needs. Barnabas Fund steps in to assist with a proportion of their living and ministry expenses, enabling church leaders to focus on the congregations in their care. Freeing church leaders and evangelists from the burden of having to earn a living means they have much more time for ministry. “We thank Barnabas Fund for the faithful monthly support and loving care for our congregation in the remote village … May the Lord bless you for all you do to sustain the church in this difficult part of the world!” said one church planter in Indonesia.

Giving words of encouragement

Pastor Khi: “I prayed for a Bible for 65 years and three months. How great is God!”

May your unfailing love come to me, Lord, your salvation, according to your promise; then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in your word. (Psalm 119:41-42)

Pastor “Khi”, from a minority people group in South-East Asia, is one of many believers who have benefitted from Barnabas Fund’s provision of Bibles: “Five times I went [across the border] and bought a Bible, but two times the border police [of my country] took my Bible away from me and burned it up. Three times the border police took my Bible and destroyed it by throwing it into the river.” Having led churches for many years, for the first time Pastor Khi now has his own Bible – an answer to 65 years of prayer.

The availability of the Scriptures is still extremely limited in many countries where Christians face persecution; even pastors may not own a complete Bible and many believers do not have access to the Word of God in their mother tongue. Providing Bibles

has a profound impact on Christian communities, encouraging church growth and strengthening the faith of believers. Last year Barnabas provided 189,882 items of Christian literature, including 30,000 Bibles and Scriptures, across 17 countries.

As well as distributing Bibles and other literature, Barnabas also helps to supply audio recordings as an alternative for Christians who are unable to read. In the last year we have also funded the distribution of Bible commentaries for church leaders in six countries in South Asia - other Christian literature and resources are also in short supply in many countries where believers are persecuted - and helped equip the library of a theological college in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A pastor in Nepal said, “this has been a big blessing for many people … The [Bible] commentary has helped us to better understand scripture and preach it more faithfully.”

“As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galatians 6:10, NIV emphasis added

About Barnabas FundAs part of the family of God, Barnabas Fund stands with our Christian brothers and sisters around the world, including the West, wherever they suffer discrimination, oppression or persecution as a result of their faith. In this way we witness to the love of Christ and build His Kingdom.

1. We encourage prayer for the persecuted Church by providing comprehensive prayer materials.

We believe in the power of prayer to change people’s lives and circumstances, either through grace to endure or through deliverance from suffering.

2. We channel money from Christians through Christians to Christians. Donations from individual Christians and churches are forwarded to local ministries and Christian organisations in contexts of persecution, mainly in Muslim-majority environments, to bring about practical and spiritual transformation in the lives of suffering believers.

We fund projects that have been developed by local Christians in their own communities, countries or regions. Thus we act as equal partners with the persecuted Church, whose leaders often help to shape our overall direction.

3. We tell the untold story about the plight of persecuted Christians and speak out on their behalf, making their needs known to Christians around the world and to governments and international bodies.

We seek to tackle persecution at its root by making known the aspects of religious and secular ideologies that result in injustice and oppression of Christians and others. We also equip Christians in the West to meet the challenge that other religions pose to the Church, its mission and society.

We believe in the clear Biblical teaching that Christians should treat all people of all religions and none with love and compassion, even those who seek to persecute them. We carry out our vision and purpose accordingly, but we will not compromise what we believe the Word of God teaches.
