Questions to change Trek into a Personal Quest and relevant to life today:
A significant purpose of trek is to “turn the hearts of the children to the
fathers.” Why was this person chosen? What transformed them into a pioneer?
Where did they come from when they came to America? How old were they
when they came? What was their family situation? Who were they with? What
traits did they develop to admire and emulate in my own life experience?
How has learning about this Pioneer/ Ancestor helped me?
How is my hope and faith similar to that the early Saints had to trek west?
What Personal Trek/ Quest am I on? How is it unique and suited to my gifts?
What kind of ancestor do I desire to be? How do I want to be remembered?
What blessings have I received from being part of a family? My future family?
What have I sacrificed to come on Trek? Where is my true treasure or desire?
What are my biggest challenges? What am I doing to overcome them?
How have my challenges helped me grow? Am I becoming tender or bitter?
Has my perspective/ gratitude changed because of trials? Will it be different?
What Tender Mercies have I witnessed? Do I actively look for the Lord’s hand?
How can consecration result in joy in my journey and peace in my heart?
Am I excited for the adventure ahead in this life and in the eternities?
Do I truly feel that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know and love me?

8“We cannot begin to understand the journeys made by those who
laid the foundation of this dispensation until we understand their
spiritual underpinnings. Once we make that connection, however,
we will begin to see how their journeys parallel ours now. There
are lessons for us in every footstep they took – lessons of love,
courage, commitment, devotion, endurance, and, most of all, faith.
Those 19th century pioneers to whom we pay special tribute never
set out to be heroes, and yet they accomplished heroic things. That
is what makes them Saints. They were a band of believers who tried
to do the right things for the right reasons, ordinary men and
women who were called on to perform an extraordinary work.
At times, they gave in to their discouragement and allowed
themselves to murmur and complain. But ultimately their faith in
God and the man they sustained as their prophet and leader
prevailed, and they righted their vision and attitudes along with
their wagons. In the process they found joy amid the hardships and
trials of the trek.
No matter how difficult the trail, and regardless of how heavy our
load, we can take comfort in knowing that others before us have
borne life’s most grievous trials and tragedies by looking to heaven
for peace, comfort and hopeful reassurance. We can know, as they
knew, that God is our Father, that He cares about us individually
and collectively, and that as long as we continue to exercise our
faith and trust in Him there is nothing to fear in the journey.
Let us remember that the Savior is the Way, the Truth, and the Life,
and there can be no greater promise than to know that if we are
faithful and true, we will one day be safely encircled in the arms of
His love. He is always there to give encouragement, to forgive, and
to rescue. Therefore, as we exercise faith and are diligent in keeping
the commandments, we have nothing to fear from the journey.”
- M. Russell Ballard

How Great Thou Art
1. Oh Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
(Chorus) Then sings my soul My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art, How great thou art (*Repeat)
2. And when I think of God, His son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
(Chorus) Then sings my soul My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art, How great thou art! (*Repeat)
10 To us as modern Pioneers, Harold B. Lee gave this advice:
“Walk to the edge of the light and perhaps a few steps into the
darkness, and you will find that the light will appear and move
ahead of you.”
Walk with faith, knowing that God lives and that he knows where
our steps will take us.
Handcart History Highlights
The Perpetual Emigration Fund helped 50,000 poor saints immigrate to Utah
from Europe starting in 1850. The cricket plague in 1855 greatly reduced crops
and funds, so Brigham Young introduced the Handcart plan as a cheap, quick,
but harder way, versus outfitting wagons which had to hassle with ox-teams.
Saints spent 36-65 days at sea, then took a train to Iowa City, and began the
1000+ mile handcart trek. Each cart allowed 17 pounds each for 5 people,
including clothing, bedding & cooking utensils. Tents were for up to 20 people
and there were a few support wagons & animals with the companies.
In 1856 the first 3 companies under captains McArthur, Rowley, & Ellsworth
started in June. Averaging 21 miles daily and occasionally 32, they each made
the trip in around 100 days. It was difficult but they experienced few deaths
and were considered successful. The Willie & Martin companies were delayed
and did not start until late in July. They suffered incredibly with high deaths,
resulting from early winter storms, exposure, starvation, & exhaustion. Their
example of faith and the miraculous rescue of survivors is legendary.
In 1857 2 more companies, Evans & Robison, successfully made the traverse.
Threats from Johnston’s Army temporarily halted treks in 1858, but another
came in 1859, Christiansen. The final 2 handcart companies came in 1860,
Bunker & Stoddard. The last one had 0 deaths! 8 of the 10 companies were in
good shape. The 10 included nearly 3000 emigrant saints, 653 carts and 50
wagons. Excluding the Martin & Willie companies, the mortality rate was only a
little higher than the US rate in general.
By 1860, 13 years since the first saints arrived, Salt Lake Valley had blossomed.
They began sending experienced wagon teams across the plains and back in a
single season, called ‘Down and Back’ Companies. These transported the saints
until 1869 when the Railroad was completed. About 70,000 had come to Utah
by wagon or handcart. Over 300,000 had traveled to Oregon or California.

God Be With You ‘Til We Meet Again God be with you till we meet again; By his counsels guide, uphold you; With his sheep securely fold you. God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet (till we meet), till we meet (till we meet), Till we meet at Jesus’ feet, Till we meet (till we meet) till we meet (till we meet), God be with you till we meet again. God be with you till we meet again, When life’s perils thick confound you, Put his arms unfailing round you. God be with you till we meet again. God be with you till we meet again; Keep love’s banner floating o’er you; Smite death’s threat’ning wave before you. God be with you till we meet again.
“Several thousand handcart pioneers trudged more than a
thousand miles, pushing and pulling wooden handcarts across the
plains and over the Rocky Mountains to the Salt Lake Valley. They
were gathering to what was, for them a promised land of peace, a
place of refuge. The trek west became a proving ground for their
convictions.
They recognized the hand of Providence in their lives and came to
know that their sufferings were not in vain. The grit, determination,
resilience, and faith of these pioneers are stirrings reminders to all of
us who face hardship on our journey.”
12 “We stand on the shoulders of those who preceded us, men and
women of courage and conviction who, in the midst of adversity,
put their trust in the Almighty and worked endlessly to make their
dreams come true.” – Gordon B. Hinckley
Come, Come Ye Saints
Come, Come Ye Saints, No toil nor labor fear; But with joy wend your way.
Though hard to you this journey may appear, Grace shall be as your day.
‘Tis better far for us to strive our useless cares from us to drive;
Do this, and joy your hearts will swell – All is well! All is well!
Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard? ‘Tis not so, all is right.
Why should we think to earn a great reward if we now shun the fight?
Gird up your loins; fresh courage take, Our God will never us forsake;
And soon we’ll have this tale to tell – All is well! All is well!
We’ll find a place which God for us prepared, far away in the west,
Where none shall come to hurt or make afraid; there the Saints will be blessed.
We’ll make the air with music ring, shout praises to our God and King;
Above the rest these words we’ll tell – All is well! All is well!
And should we die before our journey’s through, Happy day! All is well!
We then are free from toil and sorrow, too; with the just we shall dwell!
But if our lives are spared again to see the Saints their rest obtain,
Oh how we’ll make this chorus swell – All is well! All is well!
“It is good to look to the past to gain appreciation for the
present and perspective for the future. It is good to look up on the
virtues of those who have gone before, to gain strength for
whatever lies ahead. It is good to reflect upon the work of those
who labored so hard and gained so little in this world but out of
whose dreams and early plans so well nurtured has come a great
harvest of which we are the beneficiaries.
Their tremendous example can become a compelling
motivation for each of us. For each of us is a pioneer in his own
life, often in his own family and many of us pioneer daily in seeking
to do God’s will and lift and serve those around us.”
- Gordon B. Hinckley
Faith in Every Footstep 13
1. A marvelous work has begun to come forth among all the children of men.
Oh ye that embark in the service of God, give heart mind and strength unto him
For prophets have spoken and angels have come to lift the world from sin,
That Christ may reign over all the earth and bless his gathered kin.
(Chorus) With faith in ev’ry footstep, we follow Christ, the Lord;
And filled with hope through his pure love, we sing with one accord.
2. Those marvelous Saints who embraced this great work
And shared it in lands far and near;
Who gave all their heart, mind, and strength to the Lord
With wisdom and vision so clear;
Now stand as examples of virtue and faith, of souls prepared to hear,
Of knowledge sure, born of humble heart, and love that banished fear.
3. If we now desire to assist in this work and thrust in our sickles with might,
If we will embark in the service of God to harvest in fields that are white;
Our souls may receive the salvation of God – the fullness of his light,
That we may stand, free of sin and blame, God’s glory in our sight.
As Zion’s Youth In Latter Days
1. As Zion’s youth in latter days, we stand with valiant heart,
With promise shining in our eyes, resolved to do our part.
Upon a noble past we build; the future fills our view,
We face the challenge of our day and pledge we will be true.
2. The truths and values we embrace are mocked on ev’ry hand.
Yet as we listen and obey we know we can withstand
The evils that would weaken us, the sin that would destroy.
With faith, we hold the iron rod and find in this our joy.
3. Thru test and trial we’ll have our fears, but we will not despair.
We’re here to serve a righteous cause; truth gives us strength to dare.
We’ll love, and learn, and overcome; we’ll sing a joyful song,
As Zion’s youth in latter days, triumphant, pure, and strong.
14 “You have been born at this time for a sacred and glorious
purpose. It is not by chance that you have been reserved to come
to earth in this last dispensation of the fullness of times. Your birth
at this particular time was foreordained in the eternities. You are to
be the royal daughters (and sons) of the Lord in the last day. You
are youth of the noble birthright.
I leave you my witness that I know that the youth of today are
some of the strongest and most valiant children of the Lord that he
has held until this time in history.” – Ezra Taft Benson in 1986
Carry On
1. Firm as the mountains around us, stalwart and brave we stand
On the rock our fathers planted for us in this goodly land –
The rock of honor and virtue, of faith in the living God.
They raised his banner triumphant – over the desert sod.
(Chorus) And we hear the desert singing: Carry on, carry on, carry on!
Hills and vales and mountains ringing: Carry on, carry on, carry on!
Holding aloft our colors, we march in the glorious dawn.
O youth of the noble birthright, Carry on, carry on, carry on!
2. We’ll build on the rock they planted a palace to the King.
Into its shining corridors, our songs of praise we’ll bring,
For the heritage they left us, not of gold or of worldly wealth,
But a blessing everlasting of love and joy and health. (Chorus)
Covered Wagons
1. Day after day the wagons are rolling, onward and westward we ever must
roam. (Chorus)
2. Night after night we sit round the campfire singing the songs that remind us
of home. (Chorus)
3. Someday we’ll reach the land of our dreaming, Settle and build on some land
of our own. (Chorus)
(Chorus) Roll along roll along covered wagons! Take us safely to our new home.
The Handcart Song 15
When Pioneers moved to the West
With courage strong they met the test
They pushed their handcarts all day long
And as they pushed they sang this song:
For some must push and some must pull as we go marching up the hill;
So merrily on our way we go until we reach the Valley-o
To Be A Pioneer
You don’t have to push a handcart, leave your family dear
Or walk a thousand miles or more to be a Pioneer!
You do have to have great courage, faith to conquer fear
And work with might for a cause that’s right to be a Pioneer!
Pioneer! (with a twang and bit of a screech in your voice, first line is spoken)
“Pioneer”: page 14. If you can’t find page 14 turn to page 7 twice. Ready? Begin
If I had the strength of a pioneer, pioneer,
Into the mountains I’d climb – I’d climb!
There to remain as a pioneer, pioneer
Until the day that I died – I died! ……. Chorus (pronounced chore-us)
Ooh la-la ooh la-la ooh la……. Repeat…. Ooh la-la ooh la-la-la-la…..Again!
Ooh la-la ooh la-la ooh la…….Once more….. Ooh la-la ooh la-la-la…… The End!
Pioneer Children
Pioneer children sang as they walked, and walked, and walked and walked
Pioneer children sang as they walked, and walked, and walked, and walked
They washed in streams, and worked, and played
Sundays they camped, and read, and prayed
Week after week, they sang as they walked and walked and walked and walked
– And walked.
*Additional line credited to Reed Johnson age 10:
Young women leaders meet and they talk, and talk, and talk, and talk and talk!
16 Trek Food Committee Theme Song: Chicken Lips CHORUS (Sung to the Mary Poppins tune: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) Chicken lips and lizard lips and alligator eyes, Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs, Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toenail pies, Put them all together and it’s mama’s soup surprise… When I was a little kid I never liked to eat, Mama put things on my plate I dumped them on her feet, Then one day she made this soup I ate it all in bed, I asked her what she put in it and this is what she said, oh… CHORUS I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
And I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
Da lat da (Da lat da), da lat da (Da lat da)
Da-da-da dun-diddle un-diddle un-diddle uh da-da
(Repeat)
When I go out (When I go out), well, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
And when I come home (When I come home), yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the one who’s trekking home with you
I'm gonna be the one who's trekking home with you
*additional trek-ish lyrics
And I would tract 500 miles And I would search 500 files
And I would tract 500 more To find the records from before
Just to share the gospel message and Our family hearts turned to each other
Salvation offered at your door Sealed together evermore
And they did walk a thousand miles (mom) And I would sort 500 piles
And they did sail 3000 more And I would wash and dry some more
To bring their family here to freedom To match the partner to each sock
So we could worship Christ the Lord And get them folded in your drawer :P
“The special spirits who have been reserved to live in this (time) 17 will one day be praised for their stamina by those who pulled handcarts.”

Historical Sites, Points of Interest along our Trek (Inside back cover)
Location: “Piedmont” 8 miles SW of Fort Bridger, Wyoming; total
distance 18 – 20 miles; 7,400 elevation; 80% is original trail utilized by
the saints; historical sites and observations all along the trek
Pioneer Graves: Many marked & unmarked graves are scattered all
along our trail. From 1847 to 1869 some 70,000 Mormons traveled here.
During the Gold Rush 25,000 more also traveled this to California. 10%
average of these travelers died on their journey, about 7 per mile. A
much higher concentration is along this section as they were worn-out.
Brigham’s Arrow pointed the way for Saints to follow the right path
Bigelow Bench Springs & Ruins From this bench they could see the
mountains ahead, and better forage. Byrnes & Guild families returned.
Gravel Hill Descent was the steepest rocky hill pioneers encountered,
It was more difficult because of the loose cobblestone rocks. Several
accounts record the damage to wagons, carts, and cattle. They also
made note of the wide vistas along this section and good springs.
Muddy Creek and its crossing was mentioned in nearly every Pioneer
trail account. Every group camped here. The best campsites extended all
along its grassy plain for a couple miles.
Overland Stage and Pony Express Station was at Muddy Camp
William’s Hollow Campsite was largest and flattest, site of Hoedown
Mormon Springs, Copperas, Soda, Oil & Tar Springs, Handcarts,
guns & wagons were repaired with tar & oil found here. Novelty springs.
Philo Dibble Rock & Natural Amphitheater: 1847 Vanguard
Company came down this way, leaving ruts. All others used the Aspen
Ridge. 1857 Johnston’s Army of 3000 was advancing. They also camped
along Muddy Creek, and were held up in Wyoming for the winter. Dibble
with the Mormon Raiders captured and burned 75 government wagons.
They returned on these back trail to avoid the US troops.
