Welcome to the 25th edition of Sims’ Summary and a very warm welcome to our newest residents.

At the General Meeting of Council on Wednesday 19 August 2020, I raised a motion asking for Council officers to work with development applicants to identify community space in both Dakabin and Griffin South while we have the opportunity. Both of these areas are currently underserviced for district play and recreation space, with the fast pace of development leaving them lacking in useable park space, as identified in our Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP). Events are back!

Dust off the calendar and start making plans again, because major events are back on in Moreton Bay!

Jetty 2 Jetty and Kids Fest were enormous successes - even through the requirements of social distancing.

The fact that we can get outside and enjoy the beach and events like this while other parts of the world are still in lockdown, is entirely thanks to you for doing the right thing for so long.

So I thank you for keeping our community safe and encourage you to get along to our next COVID Safe event: Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Pine Rivers Park on Friday 6 November.

Events aren’t just a great time, they’re a lifeline for local entertainers, food venders and the hotel industry who’ve been hit hard by COVID019 restrictions.

Council has rolled out a number of stimulus packages, including refunding food licence fees to local businesses, but what they need most is your support.

Moreton Bay locals and Queenslanders have been the best citizens in Australia for abiding by social distancing rules, you’ve earned this fun!

Amid the toing-and-froing of this heated election campaign, Council has made it clear to all candidates that we have two key priorities that need investment: infrastructure and the environment.

I’ve personally met with every candidate to make sure that no matter who wins on October 31, Council will have a working relationship with the government so that Moreton Bay can immediately hit the ground running with them.

Top of our wishlist is for the state government to build a koala hospital here in Moreton Bay. Given Moreton Bay is home to one of the few growing koala populations in Australia, this is a logical and time-critical investment that we want to see happen ASAP. Wildlife volunteers currently have to transport koalas to the RSPCA in Wacol or Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast for emergency medical treatment, which is an untenable two-hour return journey. I’m hoping for a solution.

We have ramped-up our advocacy of the need to improve the efficiency of our road networks through the campaign, asking both political parties and all levels

of government to unite around three major projects: Building a second bridge over the North Pine River, delivering the Moreton Connector, and making the new Youngs Crossing Bridge a reality. Infrastructure Australia recently identified transport corridors between Moreton Bay and Brisbane as a national priority in its updated 2020 Infrastructure Priority List, and we all know our region is already experiencing the effects of this high-growth, particularly along the Bruce Highway corridor. With another 240,000 people expected to move here by 2041, infrastructure investment is needed now because that figure represents a 50% population increase over the next two decades.

We’ve also asked state government candidates to support an array of sporting upgrades, skate parks, new fitness equipment and playgrounds to enhance our local lifestyle.

Whoever wins this election, I want you to know that your Council is ready and waiting to start work with the new government on November 1.

Unfortunately, due to the current COVID situation, the community component of the National Tree Day planting for Division 7 has had to be cancelled this year. A site has been fully prepared at Cliff Street Reserve and plants ordered, to include approximately 1,800 mixed Eucalypt trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Contractors are engaged to complete the planting in late September. GGllaassss HHoouussee CCiirrccuuiitt PPaarrkk

The residents local to Glass House Circuit Park in Kallangur were recently given the opportunity to provide feedback about the replacement of an old playground with fitness equipment. After an overwhelming response, Council will keep in place but renew the playground. Future works are now planned for additional fitness infrastructure (subject to budget approval and timing).

Thank you to all those residents who responded.

WWaassttee FFaacciilliittyy WWeeiigghhbbrriiddggee//TTrraannssffeerr SSttaattiioonn Works commenced in September continuing on the major civil works which were completed at the Dakabin Waste Management Facility last year. The current project will finalise the remaining civil, structural, hydraulic, and electrical works for the facility’s operational use. The final output includes a new haul road, recycling shed, and will also see a 20-bay sawtooth transfer station open for public use. The new transfer station and community recycling shed will provide all waste and recycling disposal needs in one location, making trips quicker and easier for residents. It will also increase material recovery and recycling, introducing additional recycling for household batteries, mobile phones, cooking oils, printer cartridges, fluorescent lights, and much more. The existing transfer station site will be retired upon completion of these works which are expected to take 15 weeks (weather dependent) at a budget of $1.2 million.

WWoooollwwoorrtthhss hhaass aarrrriivveedd iinn DDaakkaabbiinn!! It was great to be part of the opening of the new Woolworths, on the corner of Alma/Old Gympie Roads in Dakabin on 19 August. I’m sure all the local residents will enjoy using their new local outlet. The $35 million development employs 82 team members and has been environmentally designed with LED lights to reduce power usage, and carbon-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Did you know that customers can also take in their soft plastics to be recycled? Generally, soft plastics include items that can be scrunched into a ball like lolly wrappers, pasta packets, plastic wrap and plastic bags.

Council’s Green Infrastructure Program is rolling out 920 metres of wildlife safety fencing on this major road. The works will require the removal of some vegetation to install the fences, but nearly 130 trees will be planted to provide new koala habitat. Being a well-known wildlife corridor, this $264,000 project will make the area safer for wildlife and deliver critical habitat for local koalas. At the General Meeting on 2 September 2020, Council voted to secure three sites for the tree planting along the Murrumba Downs habitat corridor in Kallangur and Murrumba Downs:

1. 99 Goodfellows Road, Kallangur

2. Pam Gorring Park, Kallangur

3. Brays Road Park, Murrumba Downs The project commenced in late September and will take four weeks to complete, weather dependent. Congratulations to Undurba State School’s Disc Golf Team ‘COVID Free’ for taking out second place overall in the recent Interschool Championships.

The event was held on Thursday 13 August at Pine Rivers Park, with seven schools taking part from the Moreton Bay Region. There were 19 teams and more than 70 students. Undurba also achieved the best female score.

An enjoyable day was had by all and I would encourage all schools to start practicing for next year’s event.

FFaasstt FFaaccttss -- KKaallllaanngguurr Did you know that Kallangur was initially part of the Whiteside Run taken up by the Captain Frank (Francis Henry) Griffin in 1843? During the 1870s, it became part of extensive grazing properties owned by Tom Petrie and the Rev. Charles Ogg. The name Kallangur was recommended by Constance Campbell Petrie from her father’s reminiscences. Tom Petrie recorded the word from an Aboriginal dialect in the Maroochy area, translated as ‘good’ or a ‘good place’.

The tender has now been awarded for the intersection upgrade at Brays Road/McClintock Drive in Murrumba Downs, with works scheduled to commence in September. The $5.6 million upgrade to four of the intersections along Brays Road will benefit traffic from both the Griffin and Murrumba Downs catchments, who use this on a daily basis. The project is expected to take around 40 weeks to complete with traffic flow maintained in both directions during the works.

Full design specifications and the project brief can be viewed on Council’s website at: mmoorreettoonnbbaayy..qqlldd..ggoovv..aauu//SSeerrvviicceess//PPrroojjeeccttss//BBrraayyss--RRooaadd--MMuurrrruummbbaa--DDoowwnnss I would like to thank residents for their patience as we work to improve safety and efficiency for the community.
