Millburn Township is a beautiful and bucolic residential community, located only 20 miles from New York City in the southwest corner of Essex County. Set among the rolling, short hills of north-central New Jersey’s South Mountain reservation, the township offers the charm of a small-town setting with the sophistication of big-city living.

With a population of nearly 20,000, Millburn Township features an abundance of especially desirable community amenities, such as fine dining and shopping; thriving entertainment; a highly ranked school system; convenient transportation; outstanding recreational facilities and ideal proximity to New York City, while preserving the comforts of suburban life. Two sections come under the umbrella municipality of Millburn Township and include the commercial center and adjoining residential sections of Millburn, as well as the Short Hills area, which lies to the north and west. Each has its own post office, railroad station, shops, restaurants and residential neighborhoods.

Millburn Township, has a rich tradition that reaches back to the mid-19th century. Many examples of its history are represented by a number of architecturally significant homes and historic districts. As a 21st century community, we’re recognized as one of New Jersey’s most desirable towns in which to live, work and do business.

Once part of the Elizabethtown and Newark settlements created in the 1660s, Millburn became a separate township within Essex County in 1857. In 2007, the township celebrated its 150th anniversary, which it marked with numerous special events and activities.

After the Revolution, the area gradually changed from one of farms to one of grist, lumber and paper mills, including the one that is now the site of the Paper Mill Playhouse.

With the Morris and Essex Railroad completed in 1835, Millburn and its local industries became linked to the big cities in the east and the coal regions in the northwest. The name “Millburn” was decided upon partly because many of the town’s residents hailed from Scotland, and the mill and burn (Scottish word for stream) reminded them of home.

Because of its location and railroad access, Millburn underwent a major change in the late 1800s when the areas of Millburn and Short Hills were developed within its borders. Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the spring window shade, built his ideal village called “Short Hills” — the first planned commuter suburb in America.

Millburn-Short Hills is easily accessible by car and public transportation. Two New Jersey Transit train stations provide direct service to midtown New York, Hoboken and connecting lines in Secaucus.

For residents, permit parking is available with an option for complimentary valet parking at the Millburn train station.Millburn-Short Hills is in close proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport, one of the country’s busiest hubs for air travel. Whether traveling long or short distances—around New Jersey or around the world—Millburn-Short Hills is conveniently located near all crossroads of transportation.

Millburn-Short Hills is home to numerous points of interest sure to enchant everyone from nature enthusiasts to die-hard shoppers to dedicated patrons of the arts.

Throughout the township, it is easy to appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings. One of the most prominent places to enjoy the outdoors is through the South Mountain Reservation (the largest parkland in Essex County), which extends through Millburn Township, as well as the surrounding municipalities of West Orange, Maplewood and South Orange. The more than 2,000 acres of reservation include hiking trails, waterfalls, creeks and ponds, as well as magnificent vistas from 550 feet above Millburn.

Short Hills is also home to the 16.5-acre Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization that serves as a cultural and educational center for the residents of greater Millburn Township. The arboretum was established more than 50 years ago to promote an understanding of the relationship between people and the environment. There are more than three miles of trails open to the public, and The Stone House has numerous animal exhibits for viewing—all part of the tract of woodlands donated to the township by Miss Cora Hartshorn in 1958.

Greenwood Gardens is a nonprofit public garden located adjacent to Old Short Hills Park. The once private retreat (which features Italianate gardens, mossy pebbled walks, rough stone grottos and exceptional vistas) was the country estate of 20th-century real estate auctioneer Joseph P. Day. Later, the property became part of the estate of Peter P. Blanchard Jr., who preserved the original gardens. Today, the 22-acre campus includes the formal gardens, teahouses, fields, ponds and woodlands. Greenwood is one of only 12 preservation projects of the Garden Conservancy, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of America’s exceptional gardens.

Throughout town, visitors can enjoy a walk back in time through the historic sites along the Veterans Memorial Path, a 4.5-mile trail with 17 points of interest, including Revolutionary battlegrounds, Civil War gravesites and WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnam War memorials. The path begins at the Millburn Free Public Library with a Veterans Memorial that graces the lobby. The present library facility (opened in 1976) houses a collection in excess of 90,000 books, as well as substantial holdings of other circulating materials.

The Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society oversees a museum that is housed in the westbound Short Hills train station building. The museum features exhibits, research materials and formal lectures. The Historical Society seeks to accumulate and preserve memorabilia, photographs, maps and postcards to encourage interest in local history by the dissemination of information about the town.

A great sense of history and community spirit is evident in every aspect of the township, particularly with numerous annual town-wide events and activities. Hundreds of people celebrate Independence Day with festivities, fireworks and a fishing derby, organized by an independent, volunteer Fourth of July Committee. Throughout the year, there are also celebrations, such as the Halloween Parade, Snowflake Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Car Show, Street Fairs and the annual 5K Road Race for residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Millburn Township is also home to New Eyes for the Needy, a philanthropic organization founded in 1932 to improve the vision of poor children and adults around the globe. Since its founding more than 75 years ago, New Eyes has assisted 7 million people worldwide.

From casual dining to fine dining, take-out to eat-in, American to ethnic and everything in between, Millburn-Short Hills offers a diverse mix of cuisines. Full-service restaurants include traditional American, Italian, French Bistro, Mexican, Thai, Chinese and Japanese. Pizza parlors, gourmet sandwich and dessert shops round out a selection that appeals to every taste.

Visitors from throughout the region often enjoy pre-theater dining in Millburn and Short Hills prior to heading to the renowned Paper Mill Playhouse. Founded in 1934, Paper Mill Playhouse is a professional equity theater that seats 1,200 and attracts approximately 425,000 theatergoers each season. The Playhouse sits on a bucolic four-acre site owned by the township and leased to the theater.

Past performances have included many favorite classics such as Happy Days, Steel Magnolias, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, 1776, Miss Saigon, Oklahoma and Disney’s High School Musical—to name just a few.

Paper Mill Playhouse offers extensive children’s theater programs and weekday programs for school children. Paper Mill Playhouse is one of the few theaters in the country to be fully accessible to people with disabilities, serving more than 5,000 disabled annually. Services include sign-interpreted and open-captioned performances, pre-performance sensory seminars and audio description, large print and Braille printed programs and barrier-free access.

For those who enjoy movies, there is a local four-screen theater in the heart of downtown and numerous multiplex theaters in nearby communities.

With its origins as a largely commuter town, Millburn-Short Hills boasts easy access to the city while retaining its “country” charm. From the early days when the area provided rail transportation for summer residents retreating from the heat of the city, the joint neighborhoods of Millburn and Short Hills have served as a beautiful respite from the faster pace of city living.

Early architecture incorporated Gothic Revival, Italianate and other Romantic Revival styles. By the 1890s, with an onslaught of wealthy New Yorkers, elegant Queen Anne Victorian mansions were built on estates that were once working farms. At the turn of the century, noted architects began designing Arts and Craft-style homes, and by the ‘20s and ‘30s, European-inspired Tudors were being developed. Approximately 50 of these early homes are historically registered landmarks.

Growth continued steadily, Colonial and Dutch Colonial reproductions were added, and newer styles joined the residential landscape in the post-war boom. More contemporary homes were constructed in the last several decades.

With winding streets and lush landscaping, each neighborhood throughout Millburn and Short Hills has its own appeal. The Wyoming and South Mountain sections of Millburn are steeped in the town’s history, and they offer friendly, welcoming neighborhoods within walking distance to downtown. Each of the older Short Hills neighborhoods of Glenwood, Knollwood, Nottingham, Woodfield Estates, The Beechcrofts, Fairfield, North and South Ponds and Old Short Hills has a distinctive charm that reflects its origins, while the 20th-century neighborhoods (including Poet’s section and Deerfield) display a more modern character.

Depending upon individual lifestyles, residents may choose from single-family homes, garden apartments and

small-scale apartment complexes. Styles and price ranges vary, with homes in the area selling from $500,000 to $5 million in the past several years.

Few suburban areas in the country enjoy the luxury and convenience of such a preeminent mix of retail shops as Millburn and Short Hills. Separate and distinct, the adjacent business districts of Millburn and Short Hills offer an attractive, vibrant center for local shopping, dining and community activity.

Downtown Millburn is a nonprofit organization established in 1992 by the township. Its mission is to promote and enhance the economic vitality and improve the visual appearance of the downtown.

There are a number of flourishing business districts in Millburn-Short Hills, notably a unique downtown featuring more than 400 businesses, including approximately 200 first-floor retail businesses and 220 second-floor. The township is home to several large office complexes that house dozens of corporate offices and professionals. Millburn is also extremely proud to be home to the Paper Mill Playhouse, one of the largest and longest running regional theaters in the country. Millburn has much to offer every kind of business—it’s the premier Essex County location with tremendous regional roadway and rail access.

One-of-a-kind boutique-style shops make their homes in the Township of Millburn. Gift shops, art galleries, home décor services, fine wine shops, beauty salons, jewelry, apparel and shoe stores, a bike shop, a hardware store, florists, pharmacies and specialty stores, to name a few, line the streets of several downtown shopping areas.

The Mall at Short Hills offers one of the country’s most extensive collections of luxury retailing in an environment that is elegant and sophisticated, yet intimate and comfortable. This beautiful shopping center includes five of the world’s most prestigious department stores (Nordstrom’s, Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and Neiman Marcus) and more than 150 specialty stores and restaurants. The Mall at Short Hills

is a favored destination for shoppers from all over the world.

Millburn-Short Hills offers exceptional recreational facilities and programs, including well-maintained parks and playing fields. Taylor Park features lush rose gardens, a pond, picnic tables, tennis courts, an athletic field, a playground and the Bauer Community Center. During the summer months, residents and visitors take pleasure in the Taylor Park Summer Concert Series, featuring live music for the entire family.

The Millburn Township Community Pool, located in Short Hills, features a water slide, a wading pool for small children, a new bathhouse, changing rooms, a snack bar, a gazebo, shade trees and umbrellas. The pool offers swim lessons and is home to a swim team. The par 3 golf course and tennis courts are located adjacent to the pool. Resident permits are required for tennis, pool and golf course access.

The Millburn Recreation Department offers an extensive list of programs geared toward youth, adults and senior citizens. Youth activities are seasonal, including soccer, football, hockey, basketball, wrestling, softball, skiing and swimming. In addition, Millburn-Short Hills is home to numerous playing fields (including Gero Park, Old Short Hills Park and Hobart Avenue Park), allowing for a wide array of sports programs.

Adults may register for programs that range from basketball to golf and tennis. Senior citizens may participate in fitness programs, social clubs, shuffleboard, golf and seasonal trips.

Community groups flourish within the town. There are many independent clubs and organizations, such as the Millburn-Short Hills Arts Association, Camera Club and Short Hills Garden Club, to name a few. The Beautification League is an organization responsible for the creation and maintenance of the many wonderful planters throughout the town. There are also a number of organizations dedicated to youth programs, such as The Millburn Municipal Alliance Committee for Drug Awareness (M-MAC), Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Scholastic

Boosters, Little League Baseball and Lacrosse Clubs.

In addition to township facilities, private pool and racquets clubs are The Short Hills Club, The Racquets Club and the Canoe Brook Country Club.

The Millburn Township School District consists of seven schools— five elementary (grades K-5), one middle school (grades 6-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). In addition, the district runs an integrated preschool program for both special needs and regular education students. Approximately 4,900 students attend the district’s schools, which are known for their challenging curriculum and academic excellence.

Millburn High School has been consistently recognized as one of the most outstanding secondary schools in both the state and the nation. In September 2010, it was, for the second consecutive time, named the best high school in the state in New Jersey Monthly Magazine’s biennial rankings. In 2007, the high school received the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education, and was named one of the nation’s top 100 high schools in U.S. News and World Report’s inaugural ranking of public high schools. Ninety-eight percent of graduating seniors attend four-year colleges, and, in recent years, the average combined SAT score for the school has been the highest in the state among public high schools. The school’s program of studies currently features 27 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and a wide range of academic electives. These electives are taught on four levels of instructional demand: Accelerated, College Prep A, College Prep B and Non-Ranked.

Millburn High School students are also extensively involved in extracurricular activities. Roughly 70 percent of students participate in the athletic program, which includes 29 varsity sports. In addition, a majority of students participate in a variety of vocal and instrumental groups, as well as more than 60 school clubs and organizations.

Millburn Middle School has been selected as a New Jersey Benchmark School by the Business Coalition for Educational Excellence, based on the school’s consistently high performance on state proficiency assessments. Students in sixth and seventh grades are arranged on interdisciplinary teams; eighth graders have a variety of departmental teachers to help prepare them for a high school environment. Academic studies are supplemented

by courses in art, music, public speaking, leadership, writing and technology, as well as by a number of elective courses in the eighth grade. Millburn Middle School’s program promotes leadership skills and provides many opportunities for students to participate in service-learning activities that benefit both the school and community.

Millburn’s five elementary schools (Deerfield, Glenwood, Hartshorn, South Mountain and Wyoming) consistently perform at the highest levels on New Jersey standardized tests. Each school focuses on the best instructional practice in reading and writing, problem solving and the application of technology. The schools are communities dedicated to the development of the full potential of each student.

There are also numerous private, parochial and special needs schools in Millburn and Short Hills that offer excellent educational opportunities. In addition, there is a wide assortment of preschool facilities in the area, providing early learning environments as well as high-quality daycare.

The Millburn-Short Hills area enjoys a thriving economy, with businesses that range from major companies to local shops and services. Due to zoning protection requirements throughout the township, the business environment consists of predominantly light industry and retail merchants. Several shopping areas, including The Mall at Short Hills, and smaller boutique retailers span both Millburn and Short Hills.

With more than 400 beds, Overlook Hospital, located in the neighboring town of Summit, marked its 100th anniversary in 2006. The hospital was the first to incorporate the CyberKnife radiosurgical device in the Northeast and New Jersey’s first combined PET/CT scanner and stereotactic radiosurgery cancer treatment program. As part of the Atlantic Health System, Overlook Hospital has become known for its leadership in bringing excellence in medical technology to nearby Union County.

In addition, the hospital’s renowned Neuroscience Institute offers brain tumor and epilepsy programs, as well as neurointerventional radiology. Overlook is one of only five community hospitals in New Jersey approved to provide emergency angioplasty. The hospital is a clinical affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School and a partner with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Overlook’s “Women’s Heart Awareness” program won the 2006 Circle of Excellence Community Service Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

There are also many local physicians (primary care and specialists); dentists, counselors and physical therapists that offer first-rate medical treatment, as well as a local pharmacy where residents fill prescriptions and obtain related advice. TThe Township of Millburn is comprised of both Millburn and Short Hills, which share the same municipal services, such as school system, police, public library and town government. Since its incorporation as a municipality by the State of New Jersey in 1857, Millburn Township has operated under the Township Committee form of government.

Voters elect the Township Committee’s five members to three-year staggered terms. The committee elects a chairman (who serves as mayor for a one-year term) and a vice chairman. The committee makes policy decisions that shape the community.

Day-to-day responsibility for township government rests with the municipal business administrator, who supervises municipal department heads and serves as liaison among the elected leadership, Township Committee and professional staff.

The Millburn Township Fire Department operates out of two stations, one in Millburn and one in Short Hills. The Millburn Police Department and the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad serve both Millburn and Short Hills.
