Thank you to Mr Andrew Billingsley for organising the event, and to Mrs Wendy Duncan and canteen staff for their catering.

Australian Catholic Youth Festival Laura Balyuk (Year 9), Kirsty Carmichael (Year 10), Kaleb Erikson (Year 11), Simon Furneau (Year 10), Mia Gibson (Year 10), Tarzara Kelly (Year 11) and Skylar-Blu McNamara (Year 10), along with over 5,500 pilgrims from across Australia, gathered together over three days to celebrate the Australian Catholic Youth Festival at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in the city. On Sunday, 8th December through to Tuesday, 10th December, the seven students, along with myself, Ms Christie, Mr Parkes and Miss Thomson, travelled to the city to witness an incredible gathering of young people, celebrating their faith. The Festival’s theme was Listen to what the spirit is saying. Young pilgrims were encouraged to be present and active members of our society, driven by their faith, and to be the best versions of themselves in doing so. Each morning we congregated to share in a plenary gathering. The dancing, singing and energy at each of these gatherings was something to behold. Each was led by the likes of Father Rob Galea and Catholic music artist, Joe Melendrez. We were also blessed to hear keynote speeches from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Grace Forrest, co-founder of Walk Free and a director of the Minderoo Foundation.

Grace is the youngest appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Association of Australia. Her personal story of encountering and working towards ending modern day slavery was perhaps the most powerful encounter we experienced as a group at the ACYF. Her panel discussion, along with other members of her Walk Free team, was titled Conscious consumerism; simple tips helping consumers demand change. The discussion was enlightening.

Students enjoyed a range of other presentations on engaging in relationships in a digitally saturated society, forced marriage and making Mass more relevant for young people. Accompanying the constant live music and presentations was an expo where students learnt about Catholic organisations and congregations from around Australia including ACRATH and Notre Dame University. The Festival culminated in a pilgrimage walk from the PCEC to the oval at Trinity College for a closing Mass. Pilgrims enjoyed a breeze from the Swan River and stunning city views as they embarked on the walk. We were met with live music, as well as food trucks and an amazing atmosphere upon our arrival. Our group was joined by our principal, Mr Marshall. The Mass began at 6.30pm, and as the sun set, priests from across Perth moved through the crowd sharing the Eucharist with more than 6,000 attendees. Personally, I moved through the Festival experience with great gratitude: gratitude at the opportunity to attend, gratitude at the opportunity to share the experience with such an incredible group of staff and students, and gratitude for the experience itself.

A big thank you to all parents for allowing their children to share in this Festival. Each student who attended was an exemplary ambassador for the College.

Miss Anna Argese ACYF Group Coordinator

Carols by Candlelight

On the evening of Tuesday, 10th December, the Year 8 and Year 10 Rock Bands performed at the Joondalup Primary School Carols by Candlelight. Our students entertained students, families and staff as the pre-show act. Both bands performed a range of contemporary songs and Christmas carols, gaining much attention and accolades for their impressive and professional performances. It is always a pleasure to witness the enjoyment our students experience from performing, and to watch their progress as they continue to grow and develop their amazing talents within their chosen craft. Mrs Shannon Sheppard Music Teacher

Year 7 Breakfast

In Year 7 Home Economics class, we finished off the term by having an opportunity to design and make a breakfast of our choice. We learnt how to make the breakfasts from scratch, rather than following a recipe. Home Economics has been my favourite subject. Each time I go into the class I learn something new and get better at it. Making our own breakfast gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the skills we have learned to our teacher. For our breakfast we made berry pancakes which were delicious. We used a basic pancake recipe and adapted it to make it “berry nice”. Ella Roy Broyd and Regine Mwamba Kabwadi, Year 7

Disabled Surfers Association Let’s Go Surfing Day

On Saturday, 7th December, Chanel Collins, Kaleb Erikson, Fiven Ghebrehiwot, Sienna Grossman and Ollie Moir, accompanied Miss Billam and myself to the Disabled Surfers Association Let’s Go Surfing Day at Leighton Beach, Fremantle. Despite the somewhat unfavourable conditions, the students persevered and stayed in the water for hours, to allow both young and old the opportunity to have a go on a surfboard. To conclude the day, we played football and learned sign-language for the different colours. The event, run completely by volunteers, was an incredible success and our students represented our College with maturity and compassion. The many hours of service from the day will contribute towards students’ 2020 Irene’s Service Learning hours. We are very eager to attend future events. If you are too, keep an eye on the notices. Thank you to Chanel, Fiven, Kaleb, Ollie and Sienna for making me and the College community proud. Mr Kieran Parkes English Teacher

Sporting Stars Congratulations to Vaughn Arthur who has been cleaning up the silverware at Sun City Country Club recently. Off the back of a terrific performance to win the Junior Club Championship, Vaughn was also the Overall Net Winner in the Amateur Open in a field including several adult scratch handicappers. We look forward to hearing more about this talented junior golfer. Our representatives in the National All Schools Athletics Championships on the weekend also did us proud, with some outstanding performances against Australia’s best. Abigail Watson ran a great race in oppressive conditions on Friday night in the steeplechase, Samara Sallie was 6th in the hurdles and 7th in the high jump, and Zak Warburton claimed 5th place in the triple jump. Congratulations to these three students on a very impressive few months of athletics. Mr Ben Dyer Head of Sport
