Are you living up to your potential? This issue is dedicated to all of us who are born with great potential within us and want to fulfill that

potential in the span of time that we are on this earth. Who doesn’t have potential? Everyone has potential. Everyone is born with a gift, a genius within them. It is our responsibility to ourselves to seek out that gift and to share it with others. You’ll notice that our cover has six very pretty and very energetic cheerleaders on it. I selected cheerleaders for this month’s cover because what better people to shout out to you about how you can overcome difficulties and reach your full potential, whether it is in a ballgame or the game of life. Do you really know just how special you are? Do you know that there is only one you and only you have that very special gift that you can share with others? Most of us hide our gifts and talents because we feel that they just aren’t good enough. We wish our lives away wanting someone else’s gifts. Not all of us can be American Idols or Survivors or The Apprentice but we all have that one thing that sets us apart from everyone else. What is that for you? What is it that your friends and family have said to you in a positive manner that talks to you about your talent? What do you have the potential of becoming? When I was young, my mother always told me that I could do anything that I set my mind to do. So, I in my immature wisdom; tried everything and failed or at best struggled at many things. But in doing so I did realize one thing I was really good at. That was making people feel comfortable and helping them connect with others. That’s not a talent that can be taught in school. That is something that I was born with and realized just recently that it was a worthwhile endeavor. How many of us keep trying to be what we are not because we think that’s what others would hold in higher esteem? How many of us think that unless you can make a lot of money doing something, that it can’t be your gift? Let me let you in on a little secret. Sharing ‘your gift’ with the world will bring you immeasurable satisfaction and rewards. There are many people in the world and even in our own community who make a lot of money but are very unhappy with the work they do because they are not living up to their potential with the one gift that they were born with. Are you one of them? This month, take the time to ask your friends and family what they think that you are really good at doing? You may be surprised at their answers. Live up

to your potential by sharing your gift. YOU CAN DO IT! YES YOU CAN! ■

YOU CAN DO IT! YES YOU CAN!

Seems like everyone is talking about Facebook these days, but is it really a big deal? Well, there is no doubt that Facebook is the hottest online

activity right now, and it has no signs of cooling down. They have over 500 million users and have basically become another search engine. So, in my opinion, Facebook really is a big deal, especially for business owners. While Facebook Profiles represent individuals with a network of friends and family, Facebook Business Pages represent businesses and have a network of “fans”. Pages allow business owners to have a separate presence within Facebook, which offers unique opportunities to inform their audience and engage with them. The purpose of a Facebook Page is to share about your business; specials, new products or services, events, etc., and to attract new fans. A Page also allows businesses to network with people, ask and answer questions, and

provide customer service. The viral possibilities for Pages really are a big deal. Once someone clicks the “Like” button on your Page, updates from your Page will then appear in their news feed. An update will also appear in all of their friends’

news feed notifying them of their friend’s new “Like” and a link to your Page. Since most people are friends with people in their local area, chances are they will click the link to visit and “Like” your Page too! This viral visibility increases as each new person “likes” your Page and it’s shared with their friends. Another benefit of a Page is that updates appear in search engine results, which is more exposure for your business when people search online for local products and services. Facebook is an excellent site for businesses simply because of the trust factor. People are being more cautious in their online activity as our dependence on the internet increases. However, people trust their friends and will most likely visit a business that has been referred to them. In fact, more than 74% of people trust their Facebook friends’ referrals. These online “word of mouth” referrals are priceless to a business owner.

Virtually Yours Tip of the Month: You can increase the number of people who “Like” your Facebook Page by adding the “Like” button to your website or blog, and including the link to your Page in email signatures. ■

What’s the Big Deal About Facebook?

Worry free medical appointments: This service is particularly helpful for physician and hospital appointments when it is recommended or required that you not drive after the medical vist/procedure.

Senior driving limitations: Our service is particularly helpful for senior citizens who choose not to drive or cannot drive. Our service provides the opportunity for seniors to maintain their independence, to get out and visit friends, go shopping, go to dinner, etc. in their own vehicles, without inconveniencing friends or relatives.

It’s easy. A professionally trained driver reports to your home, office, or wherever you may be, and then transports you in the comfort of your own vehicle.

Life and relationships are often messy and filled with all sorts of sticky situations. So how do we maintain being civil and polite when faced with thoughtless or rude behavior? It would be

wonderful if everyone practiced good manners every day, but we know that is not reality.

Respond, Don’t ReactLet’s say a coworker does not reply to your email or phone message in a timely manner and you feel you have to follow up with another email or phone call. This is a time waster, and you may become a bit angry.

You may feel like he or she is ignoring your communication and even damaging your personal and professional relationship. So how could you handle the situation?

Start by keeping the end in mind. You want to respond, not react. Without a well-thought-out response to the situation,

you may end up reacting in a rude manner. Here are a few tips to help you respond, not react:1. Identify the situation. Might the person be going through a stressful situation and is unable to respond?2. Identify your relationship with the offender. 3. Identify your motivation. Is it to enhance the other person and your relationship, or simply to vent your anger or embarrass them?4. Make sure you are not emotionally charged. It is impossible to respond in a positive and civil manner when you are angry. 5. Identify all the possible ways you could handle the situation. Consider both positive and negative options.6. Consider all the possible outcomes to your various choices.7. Select the best choice.

The Oreo-Cookie Method Once you have gone through this process, try applying the Oreo-cookie method. The Oreo-cookie method is where you first start with something kind and supportive – the cookie, followed by constructive feedback – the cream, and then end with something positive – another cookie. The Oreo-cookie method might sound like this: “Janelle, you are one of the most conscientious professionals I know. Your commitment to this company is admirable. Recently, however, you have not been responding in a timely manner to my emails and phone calls. I’m not sure why that is. Would there be a more effective way for me to communicate with you? I enjoy working with you and want to make sure our projects are on time and well done. ” The next time you are faced with one of life’s sticky situation, serve the other person two cookies along with the cream. ■

A Special THANK YOUto Some Very Special People Recently, I found myself needing an unexpected surgery and chose to practice what I preach to ‘Stay Local’ and have it performed at Wise Regional Hospital in Decatur. I was treated from the very moment I arrived with professionalism and courtesy. I wanted to say a THANK YOU to those wonderful people who made my surgery go smoothly and help me to recover as quickly as I did.

Thank you to:Dr. Daniel Morris, Dr. David Andres, Buck Kelsey, Beverly Windsor, Dolores, Rachel Case, Dominga Martinez, Heather Regan, Shawn Bennight, Amanda David, Joy Ribel, Trevor Bynum, Kim Comptom, Kelly Wilson and the countless others who made my experience surprisingly enjoyable.

A special ‘THANK YOU’ goes to Mr. Shawn Bennight and his incredible night crew. You guys rock! You are all to be commended for your professionalism and your caring. Thank You!

Gumbo is arguably the most important culinary contribution from Louisiana and has become a staple of the Gulf States since it’s introduction

in the early 1800’s. Almost immediately, the debate over what constituted “authentic” gumbo began and there is never a shortage of cooks willing to throw a whisk into the fray and fervently state their culinary

position. Light or dark roux? Okra, file, or neither? Can sausage be combined with seafood? Here are a few gumbo tidbits that might

get you by at a cocktail party or possibly a quiz show. If the conversation turns to Acadians, Choctaw Indians, and the etymology of the word “gumbo,” you’re going to be on your own.•Gumbogetsitsnamefromaninterpretationofthe

West African word for okra. As palates have changed it is becoming more common to see okra eliminated as an ingredient in restaurant gumbo, particularly preparations based on dark roux.

•All gumbo, with the exception of the vegetarianLenten gumbo z’ herbes, begins with the Holy Trinity of green peppers, yellow onions, and celery. Garlic is known as the Pope. These are non-negotiable.

•Creolecookingisconsideredmorerefinedthantheone pot cooking typically found in Cajun cuisine. Creole gumbo contains tomatoes, usually shellfish, and almost always okra. Although Creole gumbo sometimes contains roux it is generally a lighter roux.

• Filéisgroundsassafrasleafandisaddedattheendof gumbo making or sprinkled on by the diner at the table.

•Cajun gumbo is based on a darkmahogany roux(sometimes even darker) and is often finished with filéwhenserved.

•Gumboisnotathirty-minutemeal.Planonaboutthree hours.

• Sausage is usually paired with fowl and notseafood.

•Plain steamed unconverted rice is the traditionalaccompaniment. Potato salad served with gumbo is a Cajun thing.

In the end, there are as many recipes for gumbo as there are cooks and, authentic or not, it’s never really a bad pot of gumbo when you’re sharing it with family and friends. ■

DID YOU KNOW?Despite the advent of technologies like Maytag washing machines, Dyson vacuums, and Proctor & Gamble Swiffers, the total time spent doing housework has remained constant since the 1920s: roughly 51 to 56 hours per week. I don’t know about you but I don’t spend that much time in housework or my house would be a lot cleaner.

Reaching one’s potential often requires a change of direction and personal insight. It escapes me that we spend more time preparing to fail than to succeed. I mean, ask the question

of yourself, “What if I do succeed?, “What if this idea (dream, plan, vision) is reachable?” Are you ready to reach your goals or are you more comfortable with hoping instead of doing? If the answer is that you are ready to soar, then read on. Success

requires planning. You must take paper and pencil to hand and map out the future. Step by step planning allows you to foresee areas of difficulty and areas of potential growth. Time

is not wasted looking for direction. You would never start a trip without a good map, would you? Why make your business subject to a hit and miss approach. After well-spent time preparing a plan, don’t file it away and never refer back to your ‘business map’. This type of map is ever-changing. Conditions, unforeseen bumps along the road and changes in finances can require that updates are needed. I like to look at my plan weekly. It helps to keep it before me and remind me where I intend to go. This is also the reason to write it in pencil. Modifications can mean big financial gain. If a direction becomes static, alter it to fit the ultimate goal of success. Also remember to spend quiet time to take the opportunity to look inward and identify your own personal power. Often, we live our business life scaling down to the expectations that others hold of us. Some may be valid, based on past performance. Others, invalid - for the same reason. Life is a wonderful collection of moments spent gaining experience. You have not failed in the past. You have ruled out ways that do not work in given circumstances. Take that experience to propel you forward. There is amazing power inside you. You are the creative expression of the Creator. There is potential in you that has never been expressed. Now is the time. Discover your power and apply it to the business plans you have ‘in your head’! Unleash yourself. ■

Unleashing the Potential in You!

Tech support! Tech support! You don’t have to have to run down the halls of your building, or through the alleys screaming

for tech support, it is usually a lot closer than you think. Problems arise in new installs. There may be version conflicts caused by other product updates, but if you haven’t kept up with the install disk or

manual, don’t worry. Just jump on your favorite search engine and just time the company name of your product.

EVERY manufacturer has a website, and if they

don’t; you may not want to install that product! Don’t let the websites intimidate you. Getting the specific help you need is easy. Just find a tab across the top or bottom of the page that says “SUPPORT” or browse through the section entitled “Frequently Asked Question” or “FAQ”. There you can see usually a bullet list hot button issues for that manufacturer. If the FAQ and “Support” button doesn’t get you where you need to go quick enough, there is generally a search box at the top of the screen where you can type either the model number of your hardware, or the name of you software. You may even find online manuals, troubleshooting tips. Okay, you’ve tried all that, and still no dice. Don’t quit yet. Look for the “Contact Us” Tab. There you’ll find online tech chat, or a toll free number. The wait times are not so bad they can even log into your computer and fix it as you watch FOR FREE! After all, they know your product, so it is a definite good resource. If all this seems too intimidating, or you’re just too busy, contact a computer service professional. In this economy, or any, taking advantage of the widely available free tech support is a must. Your time is money too. ■

When a sk ed to write this a r t ic le , my

aim was to be brief and informative. So I’ll start with why and how to drink wine. Why drink wine? First because it tastes good; and secondly wine can enhance the food you’re eating, the company you’re with, or both. When properly served, wine flavors can range from chocolate to flowers, from berries to grapefruit, from mushrooms to cedar, and from minerals to candy. The right food paired with the right wine improves the flavor of both the food and the wine. How to drink wine? Anyway you can get it to your mouth is the first answer that comes to mind. A glass shaped for the type of wine will aid in the enjoyment of the wine, but I have enjoyed some great tasting wine out of a jelly jar on a camping trip. Don’t get too hung up on the proper stemware. Spend more time on what goes in the glass than on the glass itself. A 6 to 8 ounce stemmed glass with the top narrower than the bowl will work for almost any wine. At what temperature should I serve wine? Serve red wines at 60 to 65 degrees. I know you’ve heard room temperature, but when that wine adage was coined, most people lived in poorly built stone houses with no central heat. Room temperature then was about 55 to 65 degrees and not 75 to 80 like now. White wine should be chilled to 40 to 45 degrees. If you get any wine too cold you can hold the glass in the palms of your hands for a few seconds and warm it to the temperature you want. In short, drink wine the way you enjoy it. Remember the wine police won’t come to your door and get you if you don’t follow the “rules”! Each month I will get into more detail about how to taste wine, what wine works best with what foods, where to shop, how to store wine at home, and anything else that might help you to enjoy wine. There is no right or wrong to wine enjoyment, only opinions. And opinions are like elbows, everybody’s got one or two. I would welcome your comments, questions or criticism. You can e-mail me at [email protected]. ■

Beginning with our November issue a Wise Woman (must live and work in Wise County) who exemplifies character, grace, civility, involvement in community, a love for people and country and a mentoring spirit for other women will be asked to answer the following questions and a few personally selected for her. If you would like to nominate someone please email us their name and contact information to [email protected]. The woman selected as our Wise Woman of the month will have her picture on the cover of Wise Woman Magazine (a professional head shot for the cover will be taken by Tammy Kelly Photography).

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you. Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy … the driver won’t see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives. 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching

you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE. If

someone is in the car

with a gun to your head DO NOT

DRIVE OFF. Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your air bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location. 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

A. Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.

B. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are

not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only

hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then,

it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig

-zag pattern!

8. As women, we a re a lways trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked ‘for help’ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her ‘Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.’ The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, ‘We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.’ He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby’s cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby’s cries outside their doors when they’re home alone at night.

10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middleof the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack. Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors! ■

The treatment options for unwanted leg veins has really improved in the past ten years. New options include endovenous laser therapy, phlebectomy, sclerotherapy, and topical laser therapy. Endovenous Laser Therapy eliminates the unwanted vein using a laser fiber inserted through a skin puncture. Phlebectomy interrupts the problematic vein using a small surgical tool. Sclerotherapy involves injecting the vein with small amounts of solution to dry up the unwanted vein. A Topical laser is applied through the skin to eliminate superficial spider veins. I can customize your treatment options. Consultation, testing, and treatment are covered under most insurance plans.

Each time a book is opened potential is being released. It is the potential of the story to unfold and deliver a piece of history, another world, another time or place,

suspense, romance or humor. The potential that lies within the world of books is unlimited. For most readers, this is not new information-- it is why we read. However, the book itself is only half of the equation which results in realized potential. The other half lies in the reader. Without the reader’s imagination, worldview, desire to learn or ability to be inspired a book is simply text on paper. When a reader is placed with the right book, then both the book and the reader come to a place of the fulfillment of their potential. Having observed readers for many years, I think that it is often what happens when the reader finishes a book that is interesting. A great book can inspire a reader to strive to reach their personal potential. A noteworthy example of this lies in the popular book Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This book shows the human face of

homelessness and has inspired numerous people, several here in our own community, to seek volunteer opportunities or to donate to charities for the homeless.

In The Book That Changed My Life, Frank McCourt recalls how reading Shakespeare helped him while suffering from typhoid as a child. He recalls, “it’s like having jewels in my mouth when I say the words.” Author Dorothy Allison was inspired to become a writer after reading Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. She tells us after reading this book that, “. . . a debt that passes to the reader [is] to take up the story and remake the world. It changes me utterly. It changes me still. It remade my life.” Books have the potential to change lives and to bring out the potential in the reader. Potential lies in books; it lies within individuals; it can be found at your library. ■

DO YOU HAVE PATRIOTIC POTENTIAL? A group of patriotic high school students attending a Young American Foundation conservative leadership conference in Washington, D.C., said they were ordered by a security guard to stop singing the National Anthem during a visit to the Lincoln Memorial. U.S. Park Police confirmed that the students were in violation of federal law and their impromptu performance constituted a demonstration in an area that must remain “completely content neutral.” To their credit, the students kept on singing and were joined in by others visiting the memorial. “This is America,” said one student, “we can sing the National Anthem.” Source: Fox News 8/10/10

If you read Wise Family Magazine, then you have seen several articles over the past year about being more civil. In fact, our editor/super

marketing coach received an award for civility a few months ago. To be quite honest, I was uncertain about what they were talking about. I figured being more civil was pretty easy and just a matter of not being a complete jerk. Wrong. Because of my pride and probably ego (my wife would say absolutely), I ignored the civility challenge. Enter October 2010. I really hate it when Kim (editor) and Deborah (Life Skills author) are right, but this whole civility thing has merit. I don’t have it all figured out but the gist of it appears to be a simple matter of changing how you interact with other people. I tend to get pretty excited about things. Seriously. No kidding. I found that my conversations tended to be more about what was going on with me and my family and instantly less about what w a s g o i n g on with the person I was interacting with. A small change in how I handle discussions with others produced a much more beneficial dialogue. Similarly, I tend to be the guy at Wal-Mart on the phone. Even when I saw folks I knew, I gave them the “hello, how are ya” while I was still on the phone. There is nothing meaningful or beneficial about that interaction. Hanging up and being more attentive is the more civil alternative. So before all my faithful readers start thinking I have gone soft, I can assure you that my lack of polish and redneck proclivities are still in full effect. Fear not. I will say, however, that I am working on being more civil. When thinking about the topic of civility, please don’t think that there is any implication of weakness. Being more civil doesn’t mean you are weak of mind or of body. It also doesn’t mean that you have to back down from anyone at anytime. You can still be a hardcore, tenacious person, but still find ways to handle yourself in a more professional and civil manner. If I can do it, so can you. See you next month.■

The Family Album

Dear Dave, My husband says we can’t travel to Illinois for a family reunion next summer if we’re not out of debt by then. He thinks your rule is no vacations while you’re getting out of debt. I think if we plan and save, it would be worth it to go. Who’s right? – Ann

Dear Ann, It must be your family reunion we’re talking about! Seriously, he’s right in this case. No vacations while you’re getting out of debt. You guys need to roll up your sleeves and get the job done.

Still, I’m not going to be an ogre or anything about this kind of trip. I mean, we’re talking about family. So, I’m okay with it if you guys work together and

spend next to nothing to make it happen. But if traveling to Illinois involves $1,000 worth of plane tickets, then you’re staying home, girl! If I were in your place, I’d be staying home. That’s how you get out of debt. You have to get angry at it. You can’t just roll

No vacation?

along living life as usual. Live like no one else, so that later you can live like no one else. I know, you’re thinking life’s too short to not have some fun. Well, you’re right. Life is too short. It’s way too short to live your whole life being broke! – Dave Dear Dave, Would you agree that pride is our biggest problem when it comes to debt? – Brian

Dear Brian, That’s a really interesting question. I think pride is definitely toward the top of the list, but I’d say the biggest cause of debt is immaturity. One really good definition of maturity is learning to delay pleasure. When you can’t wait to buy the video game, or the car, or the iPhone, then that’s a sign of immaturity. It’s like a four-year-old fussing and whining, “I want it right now!” Give me a break! That kind of stuff makes me sick. But you know, pride may be the biggest reason people keep debt. People who walk around worrying about what everyone else would think if they got rid of the big house or the fancy car—worrying that everybody else would think they’re broke—now that’s pride. But it definitely enters into the equation. – Dave

4-H

New

s The new 4-H year has many 4-Hers, parents and volunteers at their busiest. The start of a new year, f inds 4-Hers choosing

projects and getting ready for shows again. Even while many 4-Hers are still enrolling, many of you may have never heard about 4-H and what it is. So don’t stop here, keep reading! The first thing we will need to discuss is, what is 4-H. 4-H is a youth organization that is focused on teaching leadership, citizenship and life skills. Let’s not forget, you have can have a lot of fun too! 4-H offers many opportunities to participate in projects, contest and later offers a chance for scholarships. Now that you know what 4-H is, let’s discuss the various projects offered. There has often been a misconception that by being in 4-H you must show livestock. Livestock projects are a few of the

A very forward thinking man, Daniel Howell, came from Alton in Denton County and chose a location near the future site of

Decatur Baptist College, because he knew the county seat would in all probability be located somewhere near his place of business. He would soon take a partner, Elmore Allen, who was destined to become the father of the first child to be born in Decatur.

As near as we can determine this store was located about a block north east across the street from what is now the Wise County Heritage Museum. As soon as the town was permanently located on the hill to the north, Howell moved his store to the “square”. Soon after Howell built his store, a man by the name of Henry Martin built a frame structure sixteen feet square, weather boarded with four inch hackberry boards that had been cut in the West Fork bottoms and shaved with a drawing knife. The building was roofed with two foot clapboards and floored with cottonwood puncheons. This building was to have further significance in the history of Wise County as our first courthouse! Until the county seat was determined, all courts in and for Wise County were held in Daniel Howell’s store.

A question from a reader:Dear Ms. Gregg, What was the name of the outlaw that is buried west of Cottondale that you mentioned in the August column? Answer: His name was Arkansas Johnson, a member of Sam Bass’ gang. Arkansas Johnson had several aliases but his real name may have been Huckston. After service in the Union Army he engaged in horse stealing and highway robbery in Arkansas. In March of 1878 he and a man named Underwood broke out of a jail in Nebraska. They made their way to Texas to join the Sam Bass gang. The gang had been active in Denton, Wise, and surrounding counties stealing horses and robbing trains and banks. On the morning of June 13, 1878 a Texas Ranger named Junius Peak was joined by a posse led by Wise County Sheriff George W. Stevens and Denton County Sheriff W.F. Eagan. They closed in on the Bass gang at Salt Creek and shot Arkansas Johnson through the chest as he was saddling his horse. He died instantly and was buried on the spot later that evening. The rest of the gang escaped. The grave of Arkansas Johnson is located west of Cottondale off CR 3661 on private property. ■

A book signing of The Adventures of Giji Giraffe … The Beginning … Who Am I? was hosted by Donna Teal of

Memory Lane. Decatur resident and newly published author, Jill Greenwell (aka Mo Cookie) was “overjoyed” with the outpouring of interest. The majority of revenues will be donated to “Bearing Precious Seed,” a ministry which supplies Bibles to Missionaries in the USA and around the world. The Adventures of Giji Giraffe benefits young readers by helping them learn life’s valuable lessons through God’s amazing love and His creation. The author was inspired by her grandchildren and hopes that her book will enrich society by helping children grow into responsible adults. Books are available at Memory Lane which is located at the Square in Decatur. ■

Usually when I’m talking about efficiency, I’m talking about energy efficiency. Gas and electric bills tend to be so high that it’s easy

to forget about your other main utility cost; water. But, even if you don’t pay as much each month, you may still be spending more than you have too. Experts say that about 14% of residential water vanishes due to leaking pipes or fixtures. Even the little leaks add up. If your faucet is leaking just ten drops per minute, you’ll lose 525 gallons in a year. The Maryland Department of the Environment has published a manual for conducting a water audit on your home (there’s a link on my website). It includes an easy way to check your house for leaks. Turn off all water fixtures inside and outside your home, and check the reading on your water meter. Wait one hour, ensuring that no one uses any water, and then check the meter again. If the meter reading has changed, you have a leak somewhere in your home. Besides leaks, up to 30% of the water you buy or pull from your well is going down the toilet. Switching to a new, efficient toilet could save up to 4 gallons per flush which makes a pretty big difference over time. 1. Fix leaks as soon as you discover them, no matter

how small they seem. 2. Listen to your kids when they come home singing

songs about turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth. It turns out that giant dinosaur actually knows a little bit about conserving water.

3. When you aren’t using your swimming pool, keep it covered. This can stop up to 90% of water loss caused by evaporation.

Most of the citizens think that residential burglaries are done in the night hours. In the past several months, we have investigated numerous daytime

burglaries throughout Wise County. When we take our kids to school, and head off to work; burglars seem to realize that nobody is at home.

Most of our daytime burglaries have the same motive of operation in that the front or back door is kicked in. A variety of items are reported

stolen mainly being audio/video equipment, and video games such as X-Box. These items being easy to trade or sale, and predominately hard to recover with no record of serial number written down by the owner. How do we as citizens combat this problem? The easiest thing is to be vigilant of your surroundings and communicating

with your neighbors. I would bet that most of us are not familiar with our neighbor’s schedules and or even know their names. Take time to meet your neighbors and let them know when you will be out of town or at work. Get involved by watching out for each other and calling in ANY suspicious activity. We get a lot of calls from citizens that say “we hate to waste your time but…” You will NEVER waste our time, responding to calls is our job and being proactive is much more effective than being reactive. With every citizen in Wise County watching out for one another, it allows us to gain vital witness information. Your information as a witness allows us to respond better, track the information you provided to other areas of the county, and it keeps the criminals wondering who to watch for. As we update our approach to daytime burglaries, please assist us in watching your neighbor’s residence and belongings. If you see something that just does not look right, call us. We would much rather find nothing wrong than respond later in the day to a burglary report. Many citizens call us with suspicious activity and we thank you very much. We have solved cases with the citizens witness information here in Wise County as well as surrounding Counties. ■

With Love, Naturally

Wendy Fowler is a local doula (professional childbirth assistant) with a passion for helping young families thrive. There has been a bit of parental commotion lately regarding how loudly we allow our children to live. Is it okay for them sail alone around the world? Or just

across the Pacific? Maybe splashing around in the creek is even too risky. I mean, you never know, right? In the book Last Child in the Woods, author Richard Louv says that we need to be willing to let our children play and accept some measure of risk. We need to stop saying, “Be careful!” and instead say, “Pay attention!” Sometimes I cringe when I see my toddler’s legs cycling like Fred Flintstone’s, but I want her to feel the joy of running hard through the wind. So now I say, “Pay attention!” But let’s back up. I submit that fearless parenting begins much earlier. Maybe even in pregnancy. Look at one of the number one pregnancy books on the market-that “What to Expect” one…it doesn’t actually outline how a woman’s body has been birthing babies beautifully for generations and generations. No, it details every negative scenario possible. Pregnancy has gone from being normal to being scary. But why should a normal, healthy woman be afraid? This robs her of her joy during one of the most precious times of her life.

How can a pregnant mom separate herself from fear? 1. Read good books-research books that look at birth as

natural, not fearful.2. Turn off the TV. Drama boosts ratings. Do not let

frightening drama enter your mind. Yes, I am talking about all those birth shows.

3. Refuse to listen to the scary birth stories some women feel the need to tell. They are much like fishermen’s “fish stories”—they grow scarier with every telling.

4. Trust your body. It was made to do this! By reflecting on the birth you want to have, you can move away from fictitious fear. You can run barefoot through the grass at full speed, so to speak. You can enjoy the miracle of growing a new person inside without all the worry. Sure, pay attention, but do not fear. ■
