Victoria (almost) 5 and Scarlett 3 have been growing with PPS since they were babies. They have bonded with many of the teachers and other kids, and they both enjoy the fun and educational activities that are planned each month. I appreciate all of the hard work and passion that Traci, Jon and the teachers put into making the school consistently enriching and fun. I also find a lot of comfort in all the smiles around the place. Congratulations to Traci and Jon, who are about to welcome their first child, a baby boy, into the world! Thank you all so much for taking care of our girls. — Laureen Langto

For most children, summer is a time to leave classes and

homework behind. However, when they return to school in the fall after the long summer break, students can find themselves struggling to catch up. Skills and knowledge gained throughout the school year fade dur ing the summer months. According to Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, loss of content retention begins within 24 to 48 hours of learning unless the new information is reinforced or applied immediately. After a month without reinforcement, approximately 80 percent of what a student has recently learned can be lost. According to Sylvan, a break from school is great for recharging your children’s batteries, but if they aren’t using the skills and knowledge that was learned in the classroom, they

could find themselves lagging behind when school starts up again. For children who have been struggling at school, summer can be their opportunity to catch-up on key skills and feel more confident when they head back to class. For students who do well, it’s an opportunity to keep their enthusiasm for learning high. Parents can play a key role in reinforcing learning on an ongoing basis. The education experts at Sylvan Learning have prepared practical tips for integrating continuous learning into fun, family activities all summer long:Checklist: Summer Fun That’s Educational, Too• Read with your child. You can’t start too early. You

can’t read too much. Reading to young children nurtures an interest in language, words and communication. For older kids, reading together can be fun and

interesting. Parents can even turn Harry Potter or Twilight mania into a learning opportunity. Read the books together with your children and ask questions about the plot and characters.

• Search for reading activities on the Internet and create a reading list. There are an abundance of sites that provide summer reading lists for children. At www.BookAdventure.com, children (grades K-8) create personalized books lists from more than 7,500 recommended titles, take quizzes on the books they’ve read at school or at home, and earn points towards small prizes for understanding the books they’ve read. The program is designed to motivate students to read more often, for longer periods of time and with greater understanding.

• Visit the library. Libraries can recommend books appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests, and many libraries offer

free children’s programs.• Keep a journal. Give your child an

empty notebook to keep a summer journal. Regular entries will keep writing skil ls active. Summer enrichment programs and camps. There are a variety of enrichment programs available for children. Sylvan Learning offers engaging programs and camps that keep the interest and fun in learning alive through the summer and into the school year. ■

@ YOUR liBRaRYBy Cecilia Hurt Barham

Summer Reading @ Your Library

Born to be a librarian, Cecilia Barham began reading when she was three and was a library aide in elementary school. After earning a Master’s degree in English, she finally realized her true calling and continued her education to become a librarian. She has worked in both academic and public libraries and has found her home at the Decatur Library, where she serves as Library Director. She is professionally active and currently serves as the president of the North Texas Library Consortium and chair-elect of the Public Libraries Division of the Texas Library Association. She may be contacted at [email protected].

As summer draws near your local libraries are busy planning

their summer reading programs. Many of the libraries in Wise County will be offering summer reading programs this summer. The Texas Reading Club provides libraries with a statewide theme each year. The theme for 2010 is Catch the Reading Express! This theme is based upon transportation, such as trains, planes and even fire trucks – sure to keep the attention of boys and girls alike! Nationa l ly, the American Library Association reports that 95% of libraries offer summer reading programs. Such a high percentage of libraries offer these programs because encouraging literacy is one of the primary missions of libraries, and summer reading programs are one of the best ways for us to support our communities in developing life-long literacy skills. According to

the 2001 study, The Role of Public Libraries in Children’s Literacy Development, “without a doubt, children who participate in summer reading programs reap the benefits of greater literacy exposure.” The U.S. Department of Education has reported that summer reading programs can help to prevent summer learning loss. Summer reading programs do this by providing a structured process to encourage reading, exciting programs that emphasize reading and access to a variety of materials from which children may self select their books. Studies have shown that programs that encourage self selection of reading materials allow students the greatest gains in reading achievement and other aspects of literacy. The local summer reading programs are completely based upon the principle of self-selection. The Decatur Public Library,

with ful l funding from the Decatur Library Foundation, will be offering eight weeks of summer reading club programs every Tuesday beginning on June 15th. The article Bridging the Summer Reading Gap, cites research that suggests, “that children who read as few as six books over the summer break can maintain their reading skills at a level achieved in the preceding school year.” If your child participates in Decatur’s summer reading program, reading just one book a week, they will read a 33% greater number of books than the minimum required to sustain their reading skills, all while having fun and earning prizes. Speaking of prizes, this year’s grand prize is a ride to school on a fire truck, compliments of the Decatur Fire Department. In addition to our summer reading program for children, we will also be offering an Online

Teen Summer Reading program, with the theme Around the World with Books. The Decatur Library will continue to offer its regular story time programs throughout the summer, relating them to the summer reading theme. All these programs are free to the public, so with something for children of all ages, there is no reason not to join us on The Reading Express! ■

Going Global with Local

Most of our regular readers are aware that the Month of May marked the beginning of the 7th year of Wise Family Today Magazine. Although we have seen a lot of things change in

that span of time, we have always been about family and hope and community.

The message that I am so strongly speaking about now (to anyone who will listen) is all about supporting our local merchants. The business owners who risk everything and sacrifice

so much to make their dreams come true and to give back to the community they call home.

Do you support your local merchants? Do you buy local when you are given a choice even if it is a few dollars more? Do you find yourself making the trek

into the metroplex to spend your money in locations that will never make a difference to our local community and quite frankly could care less? There is a reason why Denton, Grapevine and Southlake are doing so well. Many of us are funding their success. We have to stop that right now. In a challenging economy, what we do with the money we do spend

will make a huge difference.

Let’s all strive to spend our money locally. Businesses located outside of the county are funding projects in other counties. Let’s start looking for ways to spend our hard earned money in areas where we will be able to see the difference; in our own backyards.

If you have a choice – shop local. Reinvest in the community you call home. You’ll be glad you did. ■

Summer is a great time for 4-H members to work on their

projects. Some 4-H members select livestock, some work on new recipes or clothing patterns, others go to leadership and learning camps and this summer I am planning to give back to others through visiting people with my newly certified therapy dog. Our county dog project drill team leader was terribly injured in a horse accident last year. Over the last year she has been mostly in and then out of hospitals and therapy centers. Late last year she encouraged those in our dog project group to consider having our dogs tested and those who passed to make visits with our dogs to hospitals and other health care facilities. Many people, not just those of us who have trained our

dogs with 4-H, have their dogs tested and certified to be able to go and visit folks in health care facilities. To be certified, dogs need basic obedience and to pass eleven tests making sure they are safe to take new and sometimes challenging places. One test I was worried my dog might not pass was being able to ignore a bowl of food as we walked past, but we passed without a problem. Certif ied dogs need to accept a friendly stranger and be able to accept people using common medical equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, canes or crutches. Because of all we learned in our dog project meetings, practices, and competitions we passed all the tests. Taking skills we have learned and using them outside 4-H is important. 4-H encourages us to share our

knowledge and skills with others and to be leaders in guiding more people to do the same. We usually find a way to have fun all along the way, too. I am really looking forward to taking my dog and visiting new people and sharing some fun and smiles with them. There a re plent y more opportunities throughout the summer to be involved in fun 4-H activities and projects. Please contact our County Extension Office if you have any questions. ■

This cemetery is located about a mile south of the Deep

Creek Bridge. There is now an iron fence at the front of the plot, and it is locked. The Wise County Heritage Museum has a key, that may be borrowed to get in. This is one of the first cemeteries in the county, and since it is somewhat remote, there have been problems with vandals in the past. Many of Wise Counties early settlers are buried here: Woody, Mann, Ward, Bowman, Prunty, Read, Workman, to name a few. The most famous is the grave of a young lady by the name of SALLIE BOWMAN, who was killed by the Indians. To quote Cliff Cate in the “Pioneer History of Wise County”: “At the close of the war, there lived a family by the name of Bowman in a picturesque valley on Deep Creek. Besides being a farmer the head of the household

was a physician by profession. He also owned a large bunch of fine horses which miraculously enough, he had brought safely through the trying period of war. These latter had been consigned to the careful judgment and expert horsemanship of Miss Sallie Bowman, a courageous young daughter about eighteen years of age. The young lady ranged her herd about the valley, and sometimes, when it was considered safe to do so, ventured onto higher prairies for the better grass. She usually rode a fleet animal being at all times apprehensive of being chased by the Indians. On the day of the occurrence about to be described, March 7, 1868, Miss Bowman was mounted on a horse of high speed qualities, and she felt, no doubt, perfectly conf ident that she could outdistance any pursuing savages. On this day she had ventured with her herd a mile and a quarter from her home, and fresh tracks later discovered on both sides of a creek made by her own horse and those of the Indians indicated that the creek had been the starting point of her pursuit by the Indians. Presumably the latter had come upon her from the opposite side of the creek, while she was watering hr horse. Down the bank towards her dashed the redskins, and she, wild with fright , wheeled and turned her fleet horse’s head on

the direction of home. Over the prairies sped the frenzied girl turning now and then to gaze on the rapidly gaining demons whom she knew would give no quarter. A fallen treetop athwart the way, a clear leap of twenty feet would be required bound it; yet over it without disturbing a leaf went the animal on and on went the mad dash for life, wide chasms were spanned without a pause, hills were climbed and valleys were skimmed over, but all in vain. “The deplorable climax came within view of the home of a neighbor named Jones. Mrs. Jones stepped into the yard, and viewed a scene which froze her to the spot. Three giant, red demons were bearing down upon a defenseless girl fleeing for her life. Two treacherous arms were thrust forward, two gun reports rent the air, Sallie Bowman reeled in her saddle and rolled to the ground, dead. Two bullets were in her back, fired at such close range as to set fire to her clothing. Two of the Indians kept after the horse, which within a few yards would have reached home. The fine bunch of horses which had been so faithfully guarded by the young girl was taken into captivity. Sallie Bowman lies buried here in the Deep Creek Cemetery, her grave marked by a monument contributed by citizens of Deep Creek.” ■

Helping you feel safe and secure now and

in the future.

I wait in the shadows for you. I single you out from the many. I live in all parts of your life,

in your home, at your school, and in all the places where you feel safe. I can find you when you hide and I will stalk you when you are weak. I feed off your fear, your hate, and your anger. I never grow tired, nor do I show remorse or mercy. I laugh when you beg. I am the dark cloud that passes over your dreams and desires. I am the weight of the world. You continue to ask, who are you and why do you haunt me? Let me introduce myself … am adversity and I will be with you throughout your life. I dare you to challenge me. So how can you f ight and win against such a formidable foe? How can you get through? Adversity has many forms. Divorce, death, loss of friend, loss of girlfriend, poor performance in school, and your own poor decisions are just a few

of the ways that adversity shows up in your life. No matter what happens you can always stand firm against all odds if you have the right attitude. Your attitude will dictate whether you or adversity is running the show. Beating adversity doesn’t mean that you put your feelings in your pocket. It doesn’t mean that you don’t feel pain, sadness, or anger. Pain, sadness, and anger are some of the ways we cope with things and their healing value should not be underestimated. However, it is your mental attitude and mental strength that gets you through the worst adversity. If you believe that you can continue to move forward (even if it is slow going) and believe in your mind that your base (faith and family) is strong then the black cloud of adversity will never follow you for very long. Adversity will one day ask you to fight. Will you be up to the challenge? ■

Dear Dave, My husband is in the middle of serving a five-year prison sentence. We have a nine-year-old son, and we’ve sold our home and everything else of value just to get by and pay off debts. I’ve managed to pay off almost everything, but we still have about $20,000 in debt from credit cards and a car note. Our rent is $375 a month, and the car payment is $400. He was making about $100,000 a year before he was incarcerated, and the only income we have now is my monthly disability check of $1,478. Should I file Chapter 13 bankruptcy? Samantha

Dear Samantha, I’m really sorry you and your family have been put through all this. You’ve endured a real mess the last few years, and I know you’ve fought like crazy to keep things afloat the entire time. First, there’s no reason for you to file bankruptcy. Chapter 13 is a payment plan, and right now you can’t make payments, keep your lights on, and feed your child. The credit card companies can wait. I’m not going to beat you up over those last two debts, especially after all the stuff you’ve been through and done, but there’s no way a car payment fits into your life, kiddo. You need a little $1,000, paid-for car, not a car payment. You can’t raise a nine-year-old on $1,478 a month when more than half of that goes out the door for rent and a car payment. I want to get you back on solid ground so you can start growing again. I don’t have a magic wand that will turn $1,400 into $14,000,

but I do want to pierce through your pain and love you enough to help you realize that you need to look at the figures and do some math. You’re not stupid, Samantha. You’re an amazingly courageous person. But you do need to sell that stupid car! Dave Dear Dave, Do you ever recommend someone selling their house to get out of debt?AndreaDear Andrea, The only time you’ll ever hear me tell someone to sell their house to get out of debt is as an absolute last resort. If there’s just no other way to turn a corner, then it might be an option. Another would be if you don’t really like the house, and you’ve considered selling it anyway. The third situation would be if the house is just too darn expensive. If you’re sending half of your monthly income to the bank to make house

payments, then you’ve got way too much house! But most of the time the house is not the problem in these kinds of situations. There’s usually lots of other stuff, like credit card debt and $700 car payments. I’d sell a car in a heartbeat before I’d ever consider giving up my home. Think about it, Andrea. Being forced to sell your home in a case like that would be an emotionally devastating experience. I mean, it’s your home. And the truth is that in some places it would be a pretty good idea to hang on to a house. A lot of markets are already recovering at a rapid pace, and the real estate market in America—with the exception of a few trouble spots—is a lot more alive, dynamic and fluid than many people in the news media would have you believe. There are some seriously good real estate situations out there right now! Dave

The Scalpel’s EdgeBy Dr. Daniel Morris, D.O., FACOS Dear Dr. Morris,I have recently quit smoking after 10 years. Is there any way to get rid of the smoker’s wrinkles around my mouth? — Healthier But WrinkledDear ‘Healthier’, The carbon monoxide from cigarettes causes the tissue to shrink and this leads to deflation of the tissue. The shrinking causes contraction of the skin and the tissue which leads to wrinkles and fine lines. Also, as we age we lose the fullness and plumpness we had when we were younger. The solution is a two pronged approach. Restoring the volume with facial fillers is one approach and the other approach is to smooth out the wrinkles with laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatments. There are added benefits in a variety of facial fillers depending on the area of the face you are treating. These fillers come in an injectable form. The procedures are all performed in an office setting with minimal downtime and minimal discomfort. It has been termed, “ The Liquid Facelift” because we are restoring fullness and youthfulness via the injection without surgery. Call today for a free consultation. Beginning at the tender age of four Glenn entered the music business with a weekly radio show. He moved on to television, recording and performing in live venues ranging from Sunday morning church service to opening for Grand Ole Opry stars. Glenn and his wife Leesa moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Decatur, Texas in July of 2000. He began teaching in 2005 and recently opened Decatur Music.

“In the summertime when the weather is high”

Ah yes, Mungo Jerry! Just the mention of summertime and “In The Summertime”

promptly starts playing in my head. I can picture the inside of the old ’57 Chevy, windows down, (no air conditioning!), AM radio blaring and me cheerfully singing the words I could understand. If you’re familiar with the song then you understand; some of it has a lot of syllables packed into a small amount of time. Anyway, the point here is FUN! After the cold winter we have just been through, I feel the need to take a little time for a little fun. Instead of spending every waking moment working which is the usual pattern for me, I am changing my schedule to devote some time to just having fun. And guess what! YOU’RE INVITED! If you’ve been in the store lately, (Decatur Music), you know that we have grown rather quickly and have had to remodel. Part of that process was due to the explosion of popularity in the ukulele market. I have discovered that this little instrument is packed with potential for, you guessed it, FUN! It is easy to learn to play, it gets noticed everywhere you take it and it’s a perfect gateway for anyone

interested in playing guitar. In fact a lot of my guitar playing friends are now finding out for themselves the joys of playing ukulele. Several guitarists have told me that they enjoy it so much that they play more on the ukulele than their guitars. We will be posting dates and locations for our “Ukulele In The Park” summer schedule on our website soon. These events are intended to be family friendly social gatherings of people who play, or want to learn to play and are free to attend. Those who play should be prepared to share their knowledge with novice players and aid in the development of others. So get your blankets and lawn chairs ready. Brush up on your playing. Pack up and let’s get ready to have some FUN! The website is www.DecaturMusic.com.■

Daddy Daughter Dance in honor of Father’s Day.

The Boyd elementary Daddy/Daughter Dance was held as a fundraiser for the Sophomore class of BHS in the elementary cafeteria on May 7th, 2010. Sophomores and their parents hosted the party.

Daddies, Grandpas and even one big brother showed up to dance with their little Cinderellas. There was a live D.J., food, drinks, raffles, face painting, picture taking, princess crowns and wands and of course red roses for all the daddy’s darlings. Couples could also take a scenic carriage ride. Mothers and sons were welcome as well.

Deborah King is President of Final Touch Finishing School, Inc. which she founded in 1989 in Seattle. Your business behavior is a key component of your

personal brand. Your personal brand establishes who you are and what you offer others. Every successful brand considers the ABC’s – appearance, behavior and communication. Successful brands are consistent. Every time you shop at Nordstrom you will experience the same behavior following your purchase. The sales person will walk out from behind the counter, hand you your package, smile and thank you for your purchase. This small consistent action has become part of the Nordstrom brand. Does your behavior match your personal brand? Consider how you interact with your supervisors, col leagues, subordinates and cl ients. Do you consistently present yourself as a professional that is promotable? Maintaining

a polished, professional business image is vital no matter what your current position may be in the workplace. Professional business behavior embraces civi l ity. Civil ity is demonstrated when all people are treated with respect, no matter what their position may be. True civility recognizes that every action made by one, somehow impacts others. Professional business behavior requires that you possess, and apply, the appropriate guidelines, or etiquette, for various social settings. Knowing how to meet and greet others, effectively network, handle technology, dine without distractions, respect off ice protocol, handle host or guest responsibilities with ease in a variety of cultural settings, are necessary skills that every polished professional must possess.

A positive attitude is essential! Have you ever tried to be polite when you were in a bad mood? It is nearly impossible. We all are faced with challenging situations in our personal and professional life from time-to-time, but you cannot allow your attitude to become negative and impact others. One of the most important choices you make when you wake up each day is choosing to have a positive attitude. Establishing and maintaining a professional brand includes polishing your behavior. The truth is, no matter where you are, or what you are doing, others are watching and forming opinions about you. Your behavior is part of your personal brand and leaves a lasting mark! Positive business behavior:

Smile and greet others • Return phone calls and emails • promptly

Arrive on time and prepared for • meetingsKeep your work area neat• Value the opinion of others• Say please, thank you, excuse • me, you are welcome

Things I Learned That Improve My BusinessWhile Playing Games on My BlackBerry…

I have an odd quirk. I look for lessons in everything I see or

experience. My schedule, l ike many self-employed folks, seems a little crowded for formal classroom instruction on a daily basis. So, I turn to the events of my day for training. Do not get me wrong. I seek out all the training I can to

increase my business acumen. But, oh the lessons life can teach, if you are only looking. I have found that while waiting in line at the bank, enduring (patiently) at the checkout, or while sitting in the lobby at the dentist, etc., there are times I turn to the games file on my BlackBerry. Lately, I am astonished at the lessons I am learning on growing my business. I knew you would want me to share! Here goes, remember to take notes! First lesson worth mentioning is, take time to relax. Recharging your batteries will make you more effective for the rest of the day. Falling into negative energy because others are moving slower than you like, can often sabotage your effectiveness for the rest of the day. Stopping to play for a minute or two is a great way to redeem the time. I also learned that planning strategy will help me avoid similar mistakes in the future. Nothing is as

painful as being knocked out of the game before you win. Planning also makes tomorrow’s successes more commonplace. This would be a good time to mention, my game playing has helped me learn from my mistakes. Recognizing what works and what does not makes the path to success smoother and the trip to the top quicker. I have also gained higher success by learning to choose my battles. In the world of games, like business, there are times when cutting your losses and moving on makes more sense than wasting time trying to “fix” something broken beyond your control. That might mean programs, ideas, directions or employees. And, yes, it is sometimes hard to be the boss. I have learned that I get better scores (results) when I work daily to improve my techniques and skills. Do not think I am wasting hours

on gaming, but I do get better even with a few minutes of focus daily on the task at hand. Your business improves if you take a few minutes of your schedule to really look at your business with fresh eyes. We can always improve. That improvement will result in forward progress for your business. Gaming has also taught me to celebrate my successes and focus on my results. I get a kick out of beating my personal best. I enjoy seeing improvement in myself. As for your business, it is often too easy to get caught up in the daily operations to celebrate when things are going well. Learn to stop and celebrate or you risk burn-out. My challenge to you, fel low business leaders, is to look for lessons that can and do improve your work and your results. Do not forget, lessons learned and applied do build success. ■

Press releases are often considered an old style of public relations, but are actually a

very powerful option for online promotion. I was recently reminded of this while submitting several press releases for a client. A press release is usually not the first thing that comes to mind for announcing or promoting something for your business, especially with the explosion of social media. However, adding press releases to your online promotion activities can provide incredible exposure. When a press release is submitted online it is distributed to hundreds of news outlets and search engines, and they are very search engine friendly. What’s powerful about submitting them online is that they appear in search results, and you can submit to unlimited press release sites for more result listings. Additionally, people search the press release sites for news and articles and re-promote them through social media. A press release can be submitted for winning an award, announcing a new product or service, launching a new website, or even a new location. Most press release distribution sites are free, although they do offer upgrade options for more

visibility. Some of the more popular sites are 1888pressrelease.com, freeprnow.com, usprwire.com, and pr.com. These sites have a template that you can simply paste your press release information into. A couple of tips for the best online exposure, 1) include keywords (your name, your business name) in your headline 2) select the appropriate category to ensure it is distributed to the right audience. Once your press release has been submitted, show it off! You’ll be able to choose a graphic with a link to your press release that can be added to your website or blog.

Virtually Yours Tip of the Month:Set up Google Alerts to monitor your name and your business name at www.google.com/alerts. Google will send you an email whenever your name or business name is mentioned online, whether it’s through a press release, a blog post, or a social media update. Be sure to put your alert criteria in quotes (“DediKated Resource”) and select “as it happens” when you set them up. You can also set up alerts for a specific product, service or competitor. ■

1. Platform Wedges can be worn with a variety of items, from a great pair of jeggings, tailored shorts, sundresses, cute flirty skirts and more. 2. Soft Pants are stylish, and comfortable. A soft, flowing pant can be worn very casual with a T-shirt or dressed up with a cute pair of must have wedges and a feminine top. 3. A Striped T goes back to the legendary Coco Chanel when she was inspired by the sailors “undergarments” (only Coco Chanel could find couture in men’s underwear!) You can opt for a classic striped T for that original sailor look or update with a fun tie-dye stripe and soft pant. 4. Print Skirts can be paired with a fun pocket T and vest for a casual but put together look or with a crisp white blouse for the office. 5. A little gray dress is a much trendier, updated option for that little black dress this season. Anything gray is a winner this season, as it gives a softer, yet oh so chic option over basic black. Although, never ditch your black, it’s a classic and will never go out of style. Remember ladies, we are talking updated trends here! As always, have fun and wear confidence as your best accessory!
