O n behalf of the Norwich University Board of Trustees, I

am proud to present the 2007 Annual Report. You will find on its pages—in addition to the requisite financial statements—a summary of news and sports highlights from the past year, an overview of the outstanding generosity of our alumni and friends, and some inspiring examples of how Norwich students and faculty are benefitting from the Norwich Forever! campaign.

As the campaign approaches its midpoint, we have already celebrated the openings of two major projects—the Sullivan Museum and History Center and the Wise Campus Center. Completed on schedule and on budget, these impressive facilities are already improving and enriching the lives of our students. Less visible—but no less notable—are enhancements to our academic programs and a strengthened endowment in the areas of scholarships and deferred gifts—also important campaign objectives.

So the good news is, wonderful progress is being made, but as the bar graph on pages 17 and 18 shows, we cannot sit back and rest on our laurels. With three years remaining in the campaign, it is going to take the active involvement of every Norwich family member—students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends—to reach our stated goals and secure the future of the University through its third century of service to this Republic.

I am honored to have this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to those of you who have made contributions of your time or treasure to Norwich this year. It is due in no small measure to you that Norwich is enjoying unprecedented levels of strength, quality, and reputation. I thank you for your commitment, and I am proud to be associated with you.

To learn how to participate in the Norwich Forever! campaign, contact the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at 802.485.2300 or [email protected].

I n my fifteen years as president, I have never been more excited than I am right now about the direction of our University. With undergraduate enrollment at an all-time high, our School of Graduate Studies growing exponentially, and the

Norwich Forever! campaign in full swing, this is a great time to be at Norwich’s helm.

The past year has brought exciting enhancements to our academic programming. The School of Graduate Studies added master’s degree programs in Organizational Leadership, Education, and Public Administration, while our undergraduate offerings expanded to include Chinese language courses and majors in Spanish and Engineering Management. In addition, the number of students and faculty participating in research has more than doubled in the last two years, thanks in part to a generous grant from the Vermont Genetics Network.

Keeping pace with these advancements in academics are recent developments in athletics. This past year we added volleyball and lacrosse to our list of varsity sports being offered to women; those additions—plus the recent appointment of a fulltime coach for women’s rugby, and the transition of women's ice hockey to a varsity sport—underscore our commitment to excellence in the increasingly competitive arena of women’s athletics.

This past year we also witnessed the opening of the new Sullivan Museum and History Center, a building so impressive that any attempt at describing it here would not do it justice. Suffice it to say you must come to Norwich and experience this living history center first hand. When you do, I guarantee that the pride you already feel for your University will multiply tenfold. (For more on the museum, see page 16.)

Falling hard on the heels of the completion of the museum has been the construction of the Wise Campus Center, which opened in August 2007. Made possible by the generous contributions of alumni and friends, and two foundation grants, this facility has preserved the best of Norwich’s past while positioning it for the future. (For more on the campus center see page 19.)

As proud as I am of these recent improvements to our campus, I am even more proud of the significant accomplishments achieved by our students. Norwich received national media attention as a result of a student-produced film documentary on Vermont soldiers killed in the war in Iraq. In May, these fallen soldiers' loved ones—now part of the Norwich family— attended our undergraduate Commencement.

Norwich students were also recognized for their service in our immediate community of Northfield. In April, the Vermont Campus Compact awarded Norwich University the State of Vermont Campus/Community Partnership Award, in recognition of our students’ volunteer work with youths in the community through the Northfield Boys & Girls Club. Further afield, Norwich students have spent time volunteering their services in Vietnam, Tanzania, and the Gulf of Mississippi. I am so pleased and proud that this current generation of students—Corps and Civilian alike—is committed to carrying on the Norwich tradition of service to others before self.

Of course, none of the above would have been possible without the extraordinary support of our alumni and friends. The $55M Norwich Forever! campaign, now approaching its mid-point, had received $51.9M in gifts and pledges as of May 31, 2007. As the charts show, this generous outpouring has enhanced our academic programs, increased scholarships for our students, strengthened our national reputation, and funded necessary campus improvements. As you review this report, I hope you will take a moment to not only reflect on how your Norwich education has impacted you, but also on how you might impact Norwich’s future.

Norwich forever!

1819 CircleB eginning in 1990, Bob

Small '61 spent fif-teen years working in

Silicon Valley as a lead chemist in the semiconductor industry. In 2004— after publishing 121 articles, own-ing 38 U.S. and foreign patents, and presenting at conferences the world over—he retired as the pre-eminent authority in the field of Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) of semiconductor devices such as Intel Pentium chips.

Given such notable credentials, one would never suspect that he very nearly switched majors after struggling in Professor John O’Neill’s Analytical Chemistry class. “He was tough—sometimes too tough—but he was a good teacher,” Bob remarked in a recent phone interview. “He was an earnest man who truly believed in what he was trying to teach us. I admired him.”

Dr. Small, who graduated in 1961 with a degree in Chemistry, expressed genuine admiration for all his Norwich professors—O’Neill, Edward Sheldon, Richard McNeer, and others—and credits them with giving him the background to be suc-cessful in graduate school and beyond. “Once I left Norwich I did a lot better in my academics, because of the foundation I had received,” said Bob, who holds advanced degrees in Organic Chemistry from Texas Tech (M.S. 1964) and the University of Arizona (Ph.D. 1971).

Now living in the Arizona desert with his wife, Helga, Bob is reaping the rewards of a lifelong career as a chemist, thanks in part to two Charitable Gift Annuities established in 2004. “When we retired we were looking for ways of investing money, so it was a good way of doing two things at once—helping the school, but also get-ting a good return on my money. My wife also gave to one of her favorite charities, so we have two different annuities out there right now,” Bob said.

When contemplating where to set up his Gift Annuity, Bob chose Norwich over his other two alma maters because, as he put it, “Norwich is unique, it’s unusual, it’s been around a long time.” He also wanted to invest his money where he thought it would do the most good. “I could have given my money to any one of the universi-ties, but I’ve always liked small schools. The other universities, they’ll find their money one way or another, but the small private schools struggle a lot more.”

Bob’s generosity to Norwich didn’t stop there. Upon inheriting his father’s estate in 2007 he decided to endow a scholarship in his memory. He chose to honor his father—an electrical engineer—in a way that not only benefits students majoring in electrical engineering, but also recognizes his father’s lifetime contributions. “He was not well known in the industry—he didn’t write a lot of articles for journals, he didn’t have a lot of patents and things like that—but yet I think the man did contribute to me, as well as probably to some of his associates. I thought it would be nice to honor him.”

The Sullivan Museum and History CenterPreserving Norwich’s Heritage

T wo years ago, at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Sullivan Museum and History Center, President Schneider remarked, “We are constructing a tangible home for our history, a place that students and alumni can

come and immerse themselves in the heritage of this great institution.” Officially open since January 2007, the museum is all that and more. Alumnus Fred Morsheimer '70 is one of 7,000 people who have already walked through the Sullivan Museum and History Center—admittedly with great expectations. He was not disappointed. “When we arrived, we were awed,” Fred said. “All my concerns over boring, dusty artifacts in static cases were instantly resolved. The wonderful graphic posters that incorporate pictures with the timelines—placing Norwich in perspective to the important events in our country's history—communicate in a powerful and insightful way. For the first time, my family actually understood ‘Norwich.’”Needless to say, the museum has become a requisite stop on the campus tour for prospective students making a college visit to Norwich. “The typical reaction we get from the sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds who walk through here is ‘WOW!’” said Director of Recruitment Skip Davison. Named for NU alumnus General Gordon R. Sullivan '59, the 16,000 square-foot building was made possible by a lead gift of $ 2.5 million from Trustee James N. Pritzker, who said, “By preserving Norwich’s rich heritage, we make it possible for more people outside of the University and across the nation to understand what we have known all along—that Norwich’s history is one of the University’s great intangible assets.” Designed by Centerbrook Architects, the building incorporates spaces for permanent and rotating displays and special exhibitions, a theater, areas for exhibit preparation and conservation, a small resource center, offices and a classroom. Out of sight, but no less important, the climate-controlled basement serves as a storehouse for the thousands of objects not on display. “We currently house in the range of 10,000 objects—but that’s just in the museum, and doesn’t count the extensive collection of artifacts found everywhere on campus, but are nonetheless a part of the collection,” said Museum Director Karen Petersen.According to Petersen, the collection is growing in leaps and bounds. “Since we opened at the end of January we’ve had nearly 70 individual donations, ranging from a single object to multiple boxes,” Petersen said. Many of the gifts are unique Norwich-related memorabilia, such as a 1928 dance program, NU Ski Hill memorabilia, and Charles Plumley’s walking stick. “The museum offers new ways to see, hear, touch, and learn about the Norwich story,” said Julie Bressor, Associate VP for Development and Alumni Relations. “And, like the University itself, it will continue to grow and reflect our community.”

A museum has been located on the Norwich University campus since 1902. The first museum was housed in Dewey Hall, and moved to Carnegie Library (presently Chaplin Hall) in 1908. The museum’s first gift was received in 1892. By the 1950s the museum collections had grown enough to warrant a move, and in 1955 the Norwich University Museum opened in the basement of White Chapel. By 2000, it was clear that the museum had again outgrown its quarters; the University celebrated the Sullivan Museum and History Center groundbreaking in May of 2005. It opened to the public in January of 2007.Support for the museum comes from a wide range of sources: individual gifts and grants, gifts to the collection, volunteers, and members of the Museum Associates. Approved by the University's Board of Trustees in 2007, the Museum Associates provide financial and other support for the museum through memberships and other volunteer efforts. For more information on the Associates, please contact Museum Director Karen Petersen at 802-485-2183, or [email protected]. To make a gift to the museum, contact the development office at 802.485.2300, or email [email protected].

SEAN ALLEN '08

S e a n A l l a n g r e w u p i n Bridgewater, Connecticut, with a desire to pursue a military career and a curiosity about the wider world around him.

“I have always had an interest in anything foreign but I never had the chance to travel outside North America when I was growing up,” says Sean. His first opportunity came

after his freshman year at Norwich, when he learned he could be in the Corps of Cadets and study for a semester in Berlin. Sean had studied German in middle school and again at Norwich, and some of his ancestors had come to America from Germany, so he decided to study in Berlin for the latter half of his sophomore year.

“Living in Berlin for a semester completely changed my view of the world,” he recalls. “I was able to travel to Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Greece. I view things from a foreign perspective now. The CNN perspective that most Americans have is really limiting.”

One year later Sean pushed his boundaries even further. During the summer of 2007 he studied Arabic at the Center for Cross Cultural Learning in Rabat, Morocco, and has followed that with a semester in Amman, Jordan. Looking beyond commencement in 2008, he is considering graduate school for Middle Eastern Studies or International Relations.

What has it meant for Norwich students?

A top-flight museum (see previous page) where they can learn about the University’s history, and a beautiful new campus center (see next

page) – those are the very visible products of Norwich Forever! Both of these new facilities have enriched the student life experience.

But the overall impact of the Norwich Forever! campaign extends well beyond brick and mortar projects. By adding millions to the University’s endowment to fund academics, scholarships, and museum operations, this campaign will directly benefit Norwich students, not only now, but far into the future. Students are already enjoying greater opportunities to pursue research and study abroad, plus more scholarship money means more young women and men will realize their dream of attending Norwich.

The two students featured here represent what is best about Norwich as set forth in the University’s vision statement: “American in character yet global in perspective; engaged in personal and intellectual transformation; and dedicated to knowledge, mutual respect, creativity, and service.” They have embarked on transformative experiences, traveled to remote corners of the world, learned more about themselves, and lived Norwich University’s values because of the support provided by the Norwich Forever! campaign.

As the campaign’s momentum continues, the world of learning opportunities will expand even further.

Sean had once planned a career in the Marine Corps, but is now leaning toward a civilian career that would take him to other parts of the world.

“I am living in non-Western nations and learning Arabic because the world is changing and Americans need to be more aware of this region and language,” he says. Sean believes that understanding foreign cultures and perspectives allows one to see how their actions could potentially affect other people or countries. “If you only focus on things from an American standpoint you will not accomplish much. If you can see how people will react to something, then it is easier to build bridges in the future.”

EMILY POULIN '09

Emily Poulin didn’t know until recently that many Vermont lakes and ponds are home to freshwater sponges, but during the past summer she came to know Vermont’s sponges quite well.

Emily is one of the University’s first Weintz Scholars. Thanks to an endowed research fund

established by Trustee Fred Weintz '47 and his wife Betsy, Emily spent most of her summer in a canoe or staring into a microscope studying some of the least understood creatures in Vermont.

One of the major academic initiatives at Norwich in recent years, undergraduate research provides students and the institution with multiple benefits—by not only helping to attract prospective

students, but also strengthening the applications of Norwich students hoping for admission into graduate programs.

According to Biology Professor Bill Barnard, engaging in research cultivates a work ethic and also provides students with another means to blossom. “Some of the best research we’ve seen has been conducted by students who were not academically at the top. We are all born with different skills sets, and some students excel when given hands-on work to do,” says Barnard.

A junior Biology major from Merrimack, New Hampshire, Emily’s post-graduation plans include applying to graduate schools. Her work with sponges filled the summer months, splitting her 40 hours per week between collecting sponges in the field and analyzing samples in a lab on campus with fellow student Tim Blood, also Class of 2009. The work is methodical, as Emily carefully analyzed each sponge’s spicule, a part of the skeleton that allows researchers to identify individual sponge species.

The role of freshwater sponges in the ecosystem of Vermont lakes and ponds is not clear. “They’re found in some lakes but not in others. We’re trying to understand why that is,” says Emily. Sponges are filter feeders, but beyond that not much is known. Professor Barnard, Emily’s mentor for her summer research, says Vermont’s sponges had never been studied prior to this past summer, which made this area of research particularly attractive to Emily.

“Freshwater sponges aren’t really known,” says Emily, “so this work may be publishable.”

C ontinuity is one of the hallmarks of Norwich. From the vision of founder Alden Partridge to the mission

statement dating from the 1840s to the annual Dog River Run, the Norwich campus is filled with history, traditions, and lore.

Even the newest structure on the Norwich campus reflects the University’s rich past. The Wise Campus Center, which opened in August 2007, is a modern, airy building nestled against two sides of Harmon Hall. With its winter garden and wall of glass facing west to the UP and beyond, the new campus center is unlike any other building at Norwich. At the same time, by merging Harmon Hall’s traditional brick and mortar exterior with its own expansive interior, the new facility symbolically connects Norwich’s storied past with its promising future.

Smaller than the original, but brightened by more windows and fresh coats of paint, the building named in honor of legendary President Ernie Harmon lives on, ready to serve more generations of Norwich students.

Beyond its architectural features that meld the new with the old, the Wise Campus Center is also a facility that brings people together. It is the one building that every student—Corps member, Civilian resident, and commuter—visits daily, whether to share a meal, grab a cup of coffee, pick up the day’s mail, or relax and unwind with friends.

Equally important for former Trustee Bob Mack '64, who made the lead gift for the campus

center, is that the building will provide a place for students to meet and chat with faculty members and ROTC staff. “There’s more to college than just being in a classroom or being in a dorm. There’s a maturing process of being with friends and learning informally from those with more life experience,” says Bob. Bob recalls gaining some of his best insights into the military from casual conversations in Harmon Hall with NCOs and faculty members who shared stories from their lives—another form of continuity. “If students listen carefully in those conversations with people who have more life experience, they can learn a lot,” he says. “I was a better officer because of the NCOs I met at Norwich.”

Including the cost of razing a portion of Harmon Hall and installing related infrastructure upgrades, the total price tag for the new campus center was $25 million, making it the most expensive building ever erected by the University. A major construction project of the Norwich Forever! campaign, funding for the building and upgrades is being made possible through a combination of campaign gifts, bonding, and operating funds.

Heading into the final months of calendar year 2007, Norwich University was working to complete the fundraising for the Wise Campus Center through a challenge grant awarded by the Kresge Foundation of Michigan. Hockey Captain Honored with Scholarship

A t the School of Graduate Studies Commencement on June 22, 2007, Norwich University posthumously awarded Michael Serba '05 a Master of Business

Administration degree. Present at the ceremony and accepting on Michael’s behalf were his sister, Ivanka, and his parents, Jim and Valerie. For Michael’s classmates, co-workers, professors, and loved ones, the moment symbolized the harsh reality of a life cut short. But like Michael’s boyish grin, it also brought with it a glimmer of hope and promise.

Upon Michael’s death in Toronto last November, the Serba family decided to establish a scholarship in his memory. “There was never any question in my mind that Norwich is the right place to honor Mike’s memory with a scholarship that will help other worthy stu-dents achieve a wonderful future,” said Jim.

Once endowed, the scholarship will be awarded annually to an inter-national student who has demonstrated a commitment to leadership through participation in extracurricular activities. It is renewable for up to four years provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

A Toronto native, Michael quickly adapted to small town life in Vermont, and after four years on the Cadets ice hockey team, decided to make Northfield his home. At the time of his death, Michael was a valued SGS employee and a promising MBA can-didate. Business Professor Dr. William Jolley recognized Mike’s potential early on. “Knowing Mike as an undergraduate, I could see that he had the maturity, self-discipline and dedication to succeed in the MBA,” Jolley said. “His team leadership abilities and his win-ning attitude made him a model MBA student.”

According to Michael’s father Jim, his son’s experience at Norwich and his interaction with the greater Norwich community had molded him into very fine person with a very bright future. “Norwich is splendidly structured and designed to mold our future leaders,” Jim said. “Michael learned so much through his interaction with the hockey team, the Cadets' coaching staff, the University staff, the alumni, and the extended community of Norwich hockey fans. I know that he was embraced by the Norwich community and embraced that community in return, and as a result grew greatly as a person.”

Scholarship support is an important part of the Norwich Forever! campaign. Persons wishing to contribute to any scholarship at Norwich, or who have questions about establishing a scholarship, please contact Kristin Fontaine, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, 158 Harmon Drive, Northfield, VT 05663, 802-485-2282, or e-mail [email protected].
