Mixing MindsThe Power of Relationship in Psychoanalysis and BuddhismPilar Jennings Foreword by Jeremy D. Safran

“We cannot find ourselves,

or be ourselves, alone.”

—from Mixing Minds

“With this remarkable book, the dialoguebetween Buddhism and psychoanalysis hasfinally come of age. In a voice that is intimate, humorous, and at the same time wise andsophisticated, Jennings takes us on a fascinatingand deeply rewarding voyage of discovery.”—Jeremy D. Safran, editor of Psychoanalysisand Buddhism: An Unfolding Dialogue

“An engaging account of therapy and Bud-dhist practice that puts the relational encounter of two human beings at thecenter of both practices. Jennings enriches stories about her own analyst and herTibetan lama with an easy but wide ranging fluency in both psychoanalytic the-ory and Buddhist thought.”—Barry Magid, author of Ending the Pursuit of Happiness

“Pilar Jennings has written a book at once personal, educational, and creative.Rather than simply conflate or contrast, she teases out nuances of each that enrichpsyche and spirit. This book stimulates eagerness and dedication to one’s ownunfolding path, making the most of both streams and their evolving mix.”—Michael Eigen, author of Flames from the Unconscious

“Jennings speaks with authority about what the two traditions share and the differ-ences they hold in common—such as desire and aggression—and guides the readerthrough the mysteries of mind-to-mind transmission and of transference/counter-transference. Original and creative, Jennings feeds our psyches and spirits.”—Ann Belford Ulanov, author of Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work

Zen Radicals, Rebels, and ReformersPerle Besserman and Manfred Steger

“These guys are my heroes, and Perle Besserman and Manfred

Steger have done a tremendous job ofbringing their stories to life. It’s

important to put a spotlight on theradical, rebellious characters who have

shaped the Zen Buddhist lineage. I really like this book.”

—Brad Warner, author of Hardcore Zen

The revolutionary figures in this book are those innovative, non-conformist masters—Zen “madmen”—whose unorthodox behav-ior has helped define the radical countercultural movement

known simply as Zen. In Zen Radicals, Rebels, and Reformers you’ll meet Zen boat-rockers

that span from early eighth-century China all the way to the bustlingstreets of modern-day America—with a stop in the middle to visit a coura-geous Zen master who made the ultimate sacrifice in his resistance to thebrutal actions of the Japanese government in World War II.

These remarkable masters show us through their audacious actionsand fearlessly lancing words that the pursuit of spiritual awakening mustultimately be a rebellion against the very foundations of suffering in theworld.

Principles of Buddhist TantraKirti Tsenshap RinpocheTranslated by Ian Coghlan and Voula Zarpani

A step-by-step commentary on

the meaning, methods, and results

of Tibetan tantric practice.

Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche was a renowned teacher of Tibetan Bud-dhism who traveled widely before his death a few years ago.Revered as a teacher by even the Dalai Lama, he was known espe-

cially as a master of Buddhist tantra, and the teachings in this book area singular record of his deep learning in that field. Originally delivered inCalifornia to a group of Western students, the teachings comment on anineteenth-century introduction to tantra by the Mongolian lama LosangPalden. Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche explains the distinctive features of thefour classes of tantra—action tantra, performance tantra, yoga tantra, and highest yoga tantra—by describing the way one progresses throughtheir paths and levels. Finally, he gives a special treatment of the uniquemethods of Kalachakra tantra, which is regularly taught around the globeby the Dalai Lama.

Zen’s Chinese HeritageThe Masters and Their Teachings

Andy Ferguson Foreword by Reb Anderson

A new foreword by Steven Heine

The classic reference guide

to the ancestors of Zen Buddhism.

“A monumental achievement. This willbe central to the reference library of Zen

students for our generation, andprobably for some time thereafter.”

—Robert Aitken

Zen’s Chinese Heritage surveys twenty-five generations of enlightened Bud-dhist teachers through brief biographies and starkly beautiful prose andpoetry from Chinese Zen sources. Andrew Ferguson moves chronologi-

cally through successive generations of Zen masters, supplementing their coreteachings with history, biography, and poetry. The result is an organic under-standing of the tradition’s evolution as a religious, literary, and historical force.

Capturing the austere beauty of the Zen masters’ manner of teaching—theirearthy style, humor, and humanity—Zen’s Chinese Heritage is an intimate andprofound human portrait of the enlightened Zen ancients, and an unprecedentedlook into the depths of this rich cultural heritage.

“Highly recommended. This excellent and exhaustive book reminds us of the vastBuddhist spiritual knowledge that comes not from Japan but China. Ferguson’swork is at once a history and an anthology of this fascinating tradition andincludes many koans, anecdotes, and stories. This splendid repository should giveinstruction and pleasure to the general reader as well as the professed Buddhist.”—Library Journal

“An indispensable reference. Ferguson has given us an impeccable and very read-able translation.”—John Daido Loori

“Clear and deep, Zen’s Chinese Heritage enriches our understanding of Bud-dhism and Zen.”—Joan Halifax

The Promise of Amida BuddhaHonen’s Path to BlissTranslated by Joji Atone

A groundbreaking translation

of the most important work by

the founder of a major living

tradition of Buddhism.

“This text is of inestimable value in under-standing Honen’s seminal teaching in his ownwords. Dr. Atone’s translation is readable andclear. This book gives the spectrum of Honen’sthought, making clear the Pure Land tradi-tion’s popular appeal. It will be of great bene-fit to scholars, students, and religiousfollowers as well.”—Alfred Bloom, professoremeritus, University of Hawaii

“Born in China, and spreading to Japan, Pure Land Buddhism is a form of Bud-dhism that can easily be understood and used by lay people. Dr. Atone’s Englishtranslation gives readers a chance to learn about the very first Pure Land teach-ings taught in Japan and found today in the Japanese Pure Land tradition. A keyaspect of this form of Pure Land practice is the use of the nembutsu, a chant-likeintonation of the name of Amida as a sign of faith. Honen offers extensive testi-mony to the value of nembutsu in everyday life and places the practice in its his-torical and doctrinal perspective. Dr. Atone’s work is truly remarkable, and I ampleased to recommend this book.”—Glenn T. Webb, professor emeritus, Univer-sity of Chicago and Bukkyo University

Sex and the Spiritual TeacherWhy It Happens, When It’s a Problem, and

What We All Can DoScott Edelstein

Introduction by Mic Hunter Afterword by Anne Katherine

“This is the book we should all read before we need it.”

—Jean Illsley Clarke, bestselling authorof Self Esteem: A Family Affair

This book looks at the complex of forcesthat tempt otherwise insightful, com-passionate, and well-intentioned teach-

ers to lose their way—and that tempt some oftheir students to lose their way as well. It ana-lyzes why most of our current efforts to keepspiritual teachers from transgressing usuallydon’t (and in fact can’t) work. Perhaps most

importantly, it suggests a set of practices and structures that can protect and buildcommunity, encourage healthy student-teacher relationships, increase trust andspiritual intimacy between teachers and their students, and help authentic spiri-tual teachers stay happily monogamous or celibate. Sex and the Spiritual Teacheris for anyone who is or might become part of a spiritual community: students, teachers, clergy, lay leaders, and even casual visitors. It’s a reader-friendly, no-nonsense guide to making spiritual life safer and fuller for all of us—one person, relationship, and community at a time.

“Written with insight, compassion, wit, and a willingness to challenge prevailingviews.” —Anne Katherine, author of Where to Draw the Line and Boundaries

“Balanced, readable, and thorough, this is a timely and much-needed book.”—Jan Chozen Bays, M.D., author of Mindful Eating

“Profound and compassionate. Anyone who has a spiritual teacher—or hopes tohave one someday—should read this book.”—Natalie Goldberg, bestsellingauthor of Writing Down the Bones

“Well-thought-out and eminently practical.”—Mic Hunter, bestselling author ofAbused Boys and Honor Betrayed

Joyously through the DaysLiving the Journey of

Spiritual PracticeLes Kaye

Foreword by Huston Smith

“A wise and practical book. Inspiring andpulse-quickening. Les Kaye points out skill-fully many of our human foibles—so familiarthat they often seem to come too close forcomfort. At one point I found myselfexclaiming, almost out loud, ‘How does heknow me so well?’”—Huston Smith

Joyously through the Days brilliantly points to our inherent spirituality, theproblems we create when we lose touch with it, and how we can regain it.Les Kaye shows us how spiritual practice enhances awareness, patience, and

generosity, and enables us to respond creatively to the complexities, distrac-tions, and uncertainties of our lives. This crisp and universal book is based onreflections of forty years of experiencing and observing the relevance of Les’sown spiritual practice to the everyday world of family and work and all kindsof relationships, clearly showing how the spiritual and the ordinary convergecontinually—not merely once in a while. Drawing inspiration from sources asdiverse as Saul Bellow, Herman Melville, and the great Zen teachers of old,Joyously through the Days offers a path to a rich and lasting happiness throughwhat Huston Smith calls “goal-attaining patience.”

The Book of MuEssential Writings on Zen’s

Most Important KoanEdited by James Ishmael Ford and

Melissa Myozen Blacker Foreword by John Tarrant

Destined to be a classic!

This watershed volume is sure to rapidlytake its place for generations alongsideThe Three Pillars of Zen as one of the

first books someone new to Zen will turn toas a starting place.

The word “Mu” is one ancient Zen teacher’sresponse to the earnest question of whether evena dog has “buddha nature”—original perfec-tion—and discovering for ourselves the meaningof the master’s response is the urgent work ofeach of us who yearns to be open and at peace.

“Practicing Mu” is synonymous with practicing Zen, and “sitting with Mu” is an aptdescription for all Zen meditation. And it is said that all the thousands of koans in theZen tradition are really just further elaborations of Zen’s most important koan, Mu.

This volume brings together teachers, ancient and modern, from across cen-turies and the full spectrum of the Zen world to illuminate and clarify the essen-tial matter, the question of how to be most truly ourselves at the deepest level. Asthe many teachers in this book talk about Mu, we learn how to work with thebreath in Zen meditation, how to open ourselves to difficulty and joy equally, and how to find freedom amid sinks full of dishes and cars full of children.

Though the third volume in Wisdom’s “Essential Writings of Zen” series ofanthologies (following The Art of Just Sitting and Sitting with Koans), The Bookof Mu is the entryway to the other two, the one with the broadest appeal and theone that everyone should read first.

Meditation on the Nature of MindThe Dalai Lama Khöntön Peljor LhündrubJosé Ignacio Cabezón

Understanding of the mind’s nature is atthe core of Buddhism, the key to suc-cess in meditation and to the profound

insights at the heart of the Buddha’s path. The text at the center of this book, the

“Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of the Oral Tradition”by the Tibetan scholar Khöntön Peljor Lhün-drub (1561–1637), combines both theory andpractical instructions for meditating on thenature of mind. The work is easily accessibleand nonsectarian in its approach, with liberalcitations from across the Indian and TibetanBuddhist spectrum. His Holiness the DalaiLama’s broad-ranging overview of this impor-tant text in the first part of this book insightfully distills some of the most cen-tral themes of Buddhism: why the mind is so essential to the tradition, howscience and Buddhism can benefit from mutual interaction, what distinguishessubtle and grosser levels of consciousness, how the different schools of TibetanBuddhism elaborate such a distinction, and how all of these schools have a com-mon source in the scholarly tradition of Nalanda Monastery, the greatest Bud-dhist university of ancient India. It is a profound and erudite teaching, both inscope and detail, and brings the reader closer to a fresh and direct experience ofthis all-important topic.

As little has been written in Western languages about Khöntön Rinpoché, thisvolume also includes a short biography of this interesting figure, who was ateacher to the great Fifth Dalai Lama.

tenzin gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, was born in north-eastern Tibet in 1935. He is widely recognized as both the spiritualand temporal leader of the Tibetan people. In 1950, Tibet wasinvaded by China, leading to His Holiness’s flight into India in1959. Since then, His Holiness has resided in Dharamsala, India, the site of the Tibetan government-in-exile. In recognition of histireless work for the liberation of Tibet, he was awarded the NobelPeace Prize in 1989.

josé ignacio cabezón is XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Chair inTibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies at the University of Cali-fornia, Santa Barbara. Kinder than All the Buddhas

The Power and Practice of Guru Devotion

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

The powerful spiritual traditionsof Tibetan Buddhism all have acommon thread. That thread is

the profound wisdom and insight thatare gained from our fellow livingbeings. The most important of theseconnections is the connection we sharewith the spiritual teacher. The TibetanBuddhist teacher is the ambassador ofthe buddhas—the enlightened com-munity—and it is through the teacherthat the student recognizes and fullyutilizes his or her own enlightenedqualities. It is through this power thatthe spiritual teacher is “kinder than allthe buddhas.”

With his characteristic charm, humor, and insight, Lama Zopa Rin-

poche explains guru devotion—the cornerstone of Tibetan Buddhist practice thatdirectly connects the student to the lineage of enlightenment. Kinder than All theBuddhas is essential reading for any Tibetan Buddhist student or anyone whowishes to truly understand this extraordinary wisdom tradition.

Stilling the MindShamatha Teachings from Düdjom Lingpa’s Vajra EssenceB. Alan Wallace

Across more than a millennium, thelamas, meditators, and scholars ofTibet created a vast literature dedicated

to revealing the profound truths about who weare and how we should make use of our lives.Sages living in mountain caves and monasticspursuing their daily rituals used these texts towear down their obscurations and make spacefor innate clarity and wisdom to manifest. Forthose of us in the modern world with hecticlives, however, such teachings from anothertime and place can be nearly impenetrable. Toapproach them, we need a guide, a helpinghand from someone who is like ourselves butwho has spent years learning the ins and outsof the sometimes secretive world of TibetanBuddhist practice.

Bestselling author and former Buddhist monk Alan Wallace is one such guide. With his trademark enthusiasm and keen intelligence, he introduces us here to oneof the most cherished works of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, Düd-jom Lingpa’s Vajra Essence. Written in the nineteenth century, the Vajra Essencepresents the practice of Dzokchen, the Great Perfection—the highest of all theTibetan meditation traditions; its contents have only been revealed to those withthe requisite training.

With permission from his teachers, Alan reveals here the work’s opening sec-tion, which presents the methods for calming the mind and bringing it to a stateof effortless concentration, the practice of shamatha. In his earlier book, TheAttention Revolution, Alan guided readers through the stages of shamatha stepby step. Here he uses the wisdom of the Dzokchen teachings to open up this prac-tice into a space of freedom from hope and fear. He makes obscure concepts intel-ligible to contemporary readers and allows us to glimpse the profoundrealizations of a great spiritual adept.
