Summary

This year’s WIQP encountered some colder weather with temps mostly in the 20’s, but fortunately no precipitation, ex-

cept at the very end. Band conditions were another story. 40 was long from the get-go which negatively impacted scores,

especially for Wisconsin stations. 20 meter Q counts were also way down. Greater than usual 75 meter activity offset

this somewhat but total log entries were down nearly 30% in spite of an increase in the number of logs received from

County Activation

Logs were received from all of our 72 counties, but there was no clean sweep this year. Forty percent (29) of our 72

counties were activated only by mobiles this year compared to 27 last year. We need to do a better job of getting local

stations on the air in many counties.

Once again, hats off to the mobile stations that come out for WIQP. Only two counties show no QSO’s by mobiles.

Activity by Band

Log submissions for 2017 totaled 317, up 3% from last year’s 309. Wisconsin stations submitted 151 logs this year com-

pared to 166 from out of state. Four of the out of state logs were from DX stations.

Historically, 40 meters has been the bread and butter band for WIQP, but this year 75 meters had more log entries. Less

than half as many 40 meter Q’s were reported compared to 2016. Throughout the contest, it was very difficult for Wis-

consin stations to work other Wisconsin stations on 40. It’s interesting that the top-scoring non-Wisconsin station, usual-

ly in next-door Minnesota, was in Ohio this year. Also, N0IJ (SOM winner) collected only 21 Wisconsin counties in his

log, while he actually visited 18 counties.

Similarly, Q-counts on 20 meters were down by more than 50%. It seems that propagation was poor at best. Stations

moved to 75 meters earlier than usual and activity there made up some of the shortfall on the other bands.

The chart below shows how different 2017 was from previous years. The reduced activity on 40 (blue) and 20 (green)

and the increased activity on 75 (red) is very evident. The total number of log entries received were also down over 25%

from 2016 (30612, down from 41935).

This table below shows more detail of the last five years.

Single Op Rookie (SOR)

This year’s top Rookie is Jacob Feltz, K9TVG, of Junction City, who scored 11700 points on 156 Q’s. Jacob is a high

school student in Junction City and has been a ham since he was 9 years old.

The second highest Rookie is Don Solberg, K9AQ, operating from Townsend in Oconto county. Don scored 9550 points

on 191 QSO’s. Both Jacob and Don operated phone only and had exactly 50 mults, but Jacob comes out on top because

he was not running high power. Great job, gentlemen, and thanks for entering WIQP!

Fourteen Rookie entries were received from Wisconsin this year, compared to fifteen last year. Eight entries were re-

ceived from outside Wisconsin, down from fourteen last year. One of them was an entry from Stefano, IZ3NVR in Italy.

The Rookie category, as the name implies, is to encourage newcomers to get involved and join the fun. Entrants do not

need to be new hams - just new to WIQP. This category is open to newcomers for two consecutive years and all entrants

in this category get a certificate.

Single Op Fixed (SOF)

Chad Kurszewski, WE9V, once again took top honors in this category with 128350 points, down from 195442.5 points,

2016. This is Chad’s fourth consecutive year at the top of the SOF category. He says, “Worst QSO total ever” in his

soapbox comments, indicative of the struggle with poor conditions this year. Congratulations, Chad, you still came out

on top!

Runner-up in SOF is Scott Dawley, N9SD, who operated from his place near Sussex, WI. Scott accrued 101617.5 points

for his efforts. Congratulations, Scott.

Great job, guys, and thanks to all 109 (down from 115) of the SOF entries from Wisconsin stations.

Multi-Op Fixed (MOF)

Tim Rogerwall, N9BIL, and his crew of five from the Green River Valley ARS in the Quad Cities area of Illinois re-

turned to Grant county this year, operating under their K9WM callsign. They again took top honors in the MOF category

with 75768 points on 294 Q’s and 96 mults. Their group of five includes N9BIL, NN9K, N9YPN, KD9VT, K0NIA.

The team of Bruce Richardson, W9FZ, and his wife Janice Hoettels, KA9VVQ, operating from Vernon county, came in

second with 47575 points.

Congratulations to both of the above groups and thanks to the other six MOF entries for your efforts!

Multi-Multi Fixed (MMF)

The Eau Claire ARC, W9EAU, again turned in the highest

score in our party - 234700 points (down from 333000

points last year) on 994 QSO’s. It’s no secret that the Eau

Claire ARC’s dominance of this category is due in no

small way to their use of The Farm, aka W0AIH.

Thanks again to Mark Seyffer, KB9S, and this year’s crew

W0AIH, K0TG, KB9AZZ, K5GKJ and KC9NZZ. You

guys are essential ingredient of WIQP.

Second in this category was five ops from the Green Bay

Mike and Key Club, with 75721 points. Ops were N9DM,

N9BC, N9RPW, KB9UAE and WA9BBL

Single Op Mobile (SOM)

John Baumgarten, N0IJ, came out on top of this very com-

petitive category this year with 119542 points on 597 CW

QSO’s. John, and his driver, Terry Van Dell, W0TVD,

have been driving their 18 county route in northwestern

Wisconsin for a number of years and this year they hit pay

dirt.

Pat Cain, K0PC, was runner-up with 106420 points on 544 Q’s, all CW. In past years, Pat operated in WIQP as

Terry, W0TVD, driver and John, N0IJ, at their starting spot on the

Burnett/Washburn county line.

2017 WIQP Results Page 4

W9DND/mobile, with his driver John Holman, W9DND, and were frequent winners of this category.

A big thanks to the seven mobiles that entered the SOM category this year.

Multi-Op Mobile (MOM)

Scott Jasper, NE9U, and friends Ron Feutz, KK9K, and Art Wysocki, N9BCA, have again turned in the top score in this

category. Their travels took them through 14 counties and they collected 580 Q’s for 121044 points.

Jim Callow, K8IR, along with Eric Janssen, KG9GH, took second place with 417 Q’s for 84529.5 points. Jim and Eric

are perennial mobile participant in WIQP, either as K8IR or NG9T in past years. Congratulations, gentlemen, and thanks

for your participation in WIQP!

Multi-Multi Mobile (MMM)

Harold Burt, W9HB, and his sidekick Roger Scott, KF9D, from Illinois took first place in this category with 78000

points on 378 QSO’s. They visited 12 counties in southwestern Wisconsin in the process. Congratulations, gentlemen!

Partners Bill Mitchell, AE0EE, and Matthew Holden, K0BBC, were back in this category for 2017, and they took second

with 296 Q’s for 50474 points. They came over from Minnesota and mobiled through 11 counties in west central Wis-

consin.

In third place is the Fox Valley Amateur Radio Contesters group operating with their club call, K9TIT. Timothy Hale,

KC9FSH, Andrew Skjoldager, KC9IZF and Nathaniel Welch, AB9TE, teamed up to score 17885 points on 182 QSO’s,

all on phone. They covered 12 counties in the eastern part of the state.

The Fox Cities Radio Technical Society group operating, KD9CSI, rounds out the three entries in this category. They

visited 11 counties and collected 10397 points for their efforts.

Top Non-Wisconsin Single-Op

This year’s out-of-state honors and a plaque go to Ohio this year. Mike Tessmer, K9NW, takes top honors with 56112

points on 343 Q’s.

Unusual conditions, especially the long propagation on 40, tilted the playing field away from Wisconsin this year. In

2016, seven of the top ten stations in this category are in states adjacent to Wisconsin, while this year only four are from

adjacent states. Also, the scores of the distant stations are higher this year while scores are generally down overall.

Thanks to all non-Wisconsin participants for coming to our party! Hope you all had fun!

Top QRP Station

Last year’s the first and second highest scorers traded places this year.

This year’s QRP honors (and plaque) go to Scott Zastoupil, KB0KFX. Scott did 42148 points on 170 Q’s running QRP

from his QTH in Waupaca

Second place goes to Jim Lageson, N0UR, who operated from home in Minnesota this year. He received 22132 points

on 136 QSO’s. Last year, Jim took the plaque operating QRP mobile in Wisconsin.

Overall, logs were received from 13 stations that operated QRP this year, 6 in Wisconsin, 7 out of state.

Top VHF Station

The top score above 50Mhz was turned in by Steve Lamers, N9SGG, who mobiled through seven counties, accumulat-

ing 85 VHF Q’s for 5040 points. Good job and we hope you enjoy your plaque!

The runner-up for top VHF score is the K9TIT crew. 55 of their 182 Q’s were on VHF, giving them 825 VHF points.

This year 46 stations reported VHF/UHF QSO’s up from 42 last year. And it’s interesting to note that the top seven sta-

tions in the VHF listing are all from the Fox Cities ARC. There seems to be a den of VHF activity around there.

Club Competition

There is a new twist in the club aggregate results this year in that the winning club had only one station contributing to

its score, and it is none other than the Eau Claire ARC’s MMM category station, W9EAU. In other words, W9EAU’s

score was higher than the aggregated scores of any other Wisconsin club. Congratulations to the Eau Claire ARC for a

double win in 2017! And this one gets you a plaque!

2015 WIQP Results Page 5

The second and third place clubs were neck and neck, with the Fox Cities ARC coming up with 177939 points, about

500 more than the Fond du Lac ARC. FCARC has 13 members contributing points while FDLARC has 16 members

contributing.

So why are there two other clubs on the listing before the plaque winner? It’s because club aggregate competition is

open to Wisconsin-based clubs only, and SMC and MWA are not Wisconsin-based clubs. In no way does this diminish

the contribution that the members of SMC, MWA and other non-Wisconsin clubs make to WIQP. Thank you, clubs!

A big thanks to all clubs, in and out of Wisconsin, that contribute to the success of our Party by promoting WIQP to

your members. Please keep up the good work and let the WIQP committee know what we can do to support your ef-

forts.

W9FK Bonus

A new wrinkle was added to WIQP this year - a 100 point bonus for each QSO with the West Allis Club call, W9FK.

The station was operated by Chuck Dellis, W9WLX, and he made 255 QSO’s, 148 of which showed up in submitted

logs. Thanks to Chuck for doing this and we hope it makes WIQP a bit more fun for everyone.

Log Submissions

For 2017, we stated that we would no longer accept printed paper logs - only handwritten logs. This change did not

seem to cause any issues and thanks to those who accommodated this new requirement.

We still get a few handwritten logs and we don’t want to exclude anyone who wants to log on paper. But please under-

stand that in order to process the WIQP results, all the log data must go into our database. This means any information

not submitted electronically must be entered manually. If there is anyone in your family or your club who can help

make your log electronic, it will be greatly appreciated.

Also, please remember that whatever format you use to submit your log, it must contain all the needed information. For

example, we get a few logs from general purpose loggers that lack the necessary county information. Check the WIQP

website or contact us if you need more information.

Thank You!

We owe special thanks to several groups.

We can’t emphasize enough the essential part that mobiles play in WIQP. The effort, skill and personal resources that

go into QSO Party mobile operations is truly awesome, and it is greatly appreciated.

Another big thank you goes to those from out-of-state who come to Wisconsin just for WIQP. Six out of 15 of the mo-

bile entries were from Minnesota. Michigan and Illinois are also represented. Thank you very much for your efforts!

And our biggest Thank You goes to everyone who participated! WIQP has an interesting mix of dedicated contesters

and more casual operators who just want to enjoy chatting with their ham friends and being the center of attention for a

few hours.

Help Promote WIQP How can we get more hams around Wisconsin and outside Wisconsin to participate in WIQP?

Participate in the WIQP email group (reflector)

You are encouraged to present your suggestions, ideas and opinions on the WIQP email reflector. This is a great place

to exchange ideas. Also, it would be great to get your pictures and stories about WIQP-related activities.

Conclusion

Please accept our apologies for being so late publishing the 2017 results. Time gets away...

And once again, thank you all for being part of WIQP and please come back and do it again on March 11, 2018!

AA8TA It was nice to see some CW activity. This is one of the more active states in this area. Thanks for the Qs. See you next year.

AE0EE Multi-multi mobile.AJ9U First WIQP since 2012. It's great to be back. Tough conditions - S9 noise on most bands, But had a fun time

anyway.K1AUS Didn't hear any WI stations on 40meters and worked the on 3 I heard on 20. Hopefully next year will be better.

K3TW Many thanks for another enjoyable Wisconsin QSO Party. Band conditions to Florida were excellent on 20m. Please consider lowering the suggested CW frequencies to avoid QRM from RTTY activity.

K4VBM (13 Phone QSOs) * 1.5 power multiplier * (9 multiplers) Enjoyed my 3rd WIQP Contest - great fun!K4WLG 73K7HKR I like the short format, but maybe run an hour or two later to allow 40 and 80 to get better to the westK8BF Club Station K8BF from Ravenna, Ohio - The Portage County Amateur Radio ServiceK8IR Operated from OCO, BRO, OUT, WAP, SHA, MEN, MAR, LIN, LAN, ONE, FOR, FLO, MRN(Home)K9GDF Poor band conditions except for 80 meters. Antenna is rain gutter and downspouts.K9LGU Great to work W9FK! Thanks!K9OT Too busy in the middle of lambing to get on HF but sounded like a good contest. Mobiles deserve so much credit!

K9TIT 12 or more contacts from: Door, Kewaunee, Brown, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Washington, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Outagamie, Calumet, Total Mobile Bonus = 6000

K9TVG Nice contest, but antenna problems cut the fun short. This will be the last year as a rookie, but I will push for a spot in the Single opperator category. Look forward to next year! - Jacob K9TVG

K9WIS Bands were awful today. Actually went out to check the antenna to make sure the connections were good..It was a cold day, expecting snow later tonite. Thanks for another great contest

K9ZMU N9HDE (additional operator)KB9VBR Poor conditions. 40m went long and 75m full of noise. Still a fun contest.KC9HYY Thanks for the contest! How about fall when it's warmer weather?KC9QYP 12 or more contacts from: Fond du Lac, Total Mobile Bonus = 500KC9UDX If there are any errors in this log file please let me know so that I can correct my logging program.KC9YVL tried mobil/portable no luck went back home had a great time on 80m !!!KD5ILA Had a BLAST. Worked everyone I heard. Great bunch of operators. Also, thanks for the email reminder.KD8NZF Great fun as always - thanksKD9CSI 12 or more contacts from: Outagamie, Calumet, Brown, Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Dane, Total Mobile

Bonus = 3500KD9GJV Operated as SOR (Rookie) from Buffalo countyKD9HPS Rookie-first WIQSPKE0TT K3/10 at 5 watts to a 66' inv vee up 24' at the apex. Fed with balanced line and a Matchbox tuner. Operated about

2 hours this year, than ran for the border.... the MN border, that is. Weather was holding up in WI, but there was a winter storm warning for the 45 miles back home. So got myself home before it really got ugly. Band condx were also unusual. I worked 17 states but only one county in WI ! And that one station was two 80M Q's with w9eau. I could hear other stations 599 working WI stations on 40M and 20M, but couldn't hear WI stations. My inv vee has most radiation striaght up, so expect to work locals, but not this year, this day. A bad day on the radio is still more fun than most days at work !

KF3EB TNX for the contest, it was fun. What was that RTTY stuff on 7040 to 7050? They were tough to deal with!KF4QFJ Alot of Fun! Looking forward to next year's WIQP. -73!KM4IAJ Great chance to work a few WI counties. More for fun than scoreKN4Y Asked to substitute in the City Bowling Tournament, operated last few hours.KX9M Got off to a slow start today but, in the end, had a grand old time once again!! Never a worry!! Thanks so much!!

N1NN 12th Wisconsin QSO PartyN8KQS We set up remote.. Good thing it did not snowN9DM This year the bands were pretty strange. 20m was normally our hot band for picking up the states. We were only

able to work a fraction of what we worked last year. 40m was long from the start which was pretty odd. All in all we had fun and that was the goal. A big thanks to everyone that worked us and hope to work you again!

N9SGG It was a blast.N9WL Checklog! Propagation has to be better in 2018.NA2NY Rough conditions, lots of noise.ND0L Still glad to participate, but it was a difficult year. Propagation must have been really long on 20m and 40m as I

was getting tired of calling CQ with no takers. Finally found a few on 75/80m but my score really suffered. Call it a "rebuilding year".

W0AA Another beutiful drive through northern Wisconsin with a different spin. NO SNOW! The snow would come later. 3 close encounters with bald eagles, and 9 encounters with deer. Deer #9 (slowpoke) was way to close! Sorry if my CW to K9NW became erratic at that moment. I had to end the run in Price county due to a 60dB over S9 signal overloading the receiver. I found KQ9J in Park Falls and worked him for the county multiplier, and then got out of town quckly! I made the last QSO in the parking lot of the "Tippy Canoes" grill in Osceola, and there met with the NR0T mobile team for a late dinner. Thanks to all the friends who stopped by, although the QSO count has little bearing on how much I enjoy this event. - WA0MHJ(W0AA)

W1END Rig was FTdx5000 and Butternut HF6V all-band vertical. Glad to see so much activity.W2UDT got on late. Activity seemed good. Nil on 15/20M. Keep the short format.W4LID Did you match logs with me on eQSL and/or LoTW and/or QRZ? Great contest! 73 de W4LID.W6OUL Hard to work WI stations on 40 and 80 in the middle of the afternoon from California???W9RE Great activity especially the mobiles. First time ever in this one.W9TIT Entering as first time Rookie.W9WJM Poor propagation. 40M was LONG. Still fun. Glad to put WSB on the air.WA9BFH First time entry as a contestant (ROOKIE). Lots of fun. Need better band conditions!WA9BZW Operating Portable from Blanco, TXWA9OEC Tough bands. I think these were my worst results. Better luck next time I hopeWA9ZDC First time in WIQP. Thanks for the fun event.WB0PYF Great QP wish had more time, 16 to go, 73 RayWB9GZP Great fun!WB9OWN 12 or more contacts from: Outagamie, Waupaca, Total Mobile Bonus = 1000 First ever rover expedition and with

newly licensed ham spouse... Inexperiance and Murphy struck immediately. Vertical antenna setup & tear down with band specific radials was huge time suck...(EZNEC simulation showed for minimal radial count, radial resonace was the key for low angle radiation, I was suduced into wanting low angle radiation, I should have listen to your wise advice Mike J.) My first stop had ambient 8-9dB noise level, (it's parking lot lamps stupid.) At second stop the FT817's CW mode died, therefore I couldn't adjust the base loaded coil for lowest SWR w/o carrier; I guessed... While operating on 20 meters my Tokyo Hy-Power HL-45B amplifier started kicking out under load on 20 meter and above. This is a hard failure. Trips between counties unexpectedly averaged 1 hour. Got lost in Shawno. Darn Garmin will solve any driving mistake regardless of the time consequences. Shawno county got nixed. Arrived at Menominee county location with 15 minuets of contest left, finally starting working WI stations.

WB9TFF I enjoyed the WIQP. Gil, WB9TFH, and I were very organized. Thanks to all of our contacts.WB9TFH Our truck mobile was set up with 2 hamsticks on each rear door with A/B switch and tuner. We operated 20m, 40m

& 80m. It was nice to switch back and forth. We were on some nice high spots, especially in Washington and Ozaukee. Wished we had more counties. We operated 7 hours. Thanks for all the WIQP Q's. 73

WE9V OMG, that was rough. Worst QSO total ever. Only one other year did I not top 700 QSOs, and this was 559 Qs. 20M was nearly non-existent for me. 40M was very long from the very start, missing most all of the mobiles unless they were at the Northern edge of the state. Could hear plenty of others out-of-state working the mobiles. WI9WI repeatedly CQd in my face, with only an occasional "?". Went to 80 really early due to 40. The mobiles were still having a great time on 40, so they weren't too interested in going to 80 early. Tried getting some business on 160M, but not many takers. Thanks for the QSOs! WO9B Wonderful time. Our rover operation experienced a number of small problems all of which were solvable. The bands were very active for us. We were able to hold a freq in both CW and SSB. And the VHF was a surprise around BRO. It was getting a bit cool towards the end, but hey...it WI. 80 made a huge comeback from last year. We thought it went long a bit early. Good times and a nice event.
