Letter From The President
Dear WMTA Members,
Are you a “list” person? I find that even with all of our electronic devices and their helpful cal-
endars/reminders/alerts, I still accomplish the most when I write things down on a piece of pa-
per and check them off when completed. This is a time of year when many of us are making
lists: what we want to get done over the holidays, what repertoire we should choose for our stu-
dents in the coming months, and what yard work needs done before the snow comes(!), to name
a few. As such, I thought this would be a good opportunity to share a list of some WMTA/
MTNA related reminders you should all be aware of.
Registration for the 2018 WMTA District Auditions will be here before you know it.
Take a moment now to check our website and make sure you’re aware of all the rules
and repertoire requirements. Reach out to your District Chair early with any questions!
Did you attend our 2017 State Conference in Madison last month? If so, be sure to com-
plete the conference survey, so we know how to make 2018 even better.
MTNA has a new website. Have you checked it out? Be sure to log on, update your
profile, and opt-in to the “Find a Teacher” directory.
The 2018 MTNA National Conference is March 18-21 at the Disney Coronado Springs
Resort. If you’re planning to go, MTNA encourages you to book your room (and meal
reservations) well in advance.
Have you heard about MTNA’s e-Festival? It is now live and open to your students and
you! That’s right, you can submit videos of yourself for feedback, too!
Have you reached out to a local teacher, or college music student, to tell them about
WMTA and MTNA? The partial year membership is a great way for prospective mem-
bers to check out all we have to offer, but the best introduction comes directly from you!
Sincerely,
Nicholas Phillips, DMA, NCTM

The new Find-A-Teacher database is now available to all WMTA members. This feature allows each of you to control
information that is posted and seen by the public. You can also promote yourselves with new profile options such as
choosing multiple areas of expertise, adding a description of your studio, your photos, contact information and links to
outside sites. The office is frequently contacted about recommendations for music teachers in a specific area. In the future,
we will be sending all requests to this page to help them find the information they need.
To create a WMTA online teaching profile, click on the link below, then follow the instructions on the screen. The proc-
esses should only take a few minutes. Once complete, you will be able to access and change all of the information at any
time. For questions, feel free to contact the central office by emailing [email protected].

WMTA membership stands at 430 (down 16 from a year ago). Twelve members did not renew citing
that they are retiring or no longer teaching. Fifteen simply did not reply to renewal requests. Keep
spreading the word of what WMTA has to offer the music teacher as we look for new members:
Support in a group of like-minded colleagues
Professional resource in a national staff who are there to answer questions
Division and State leaders who work to promote educational and networking opportunities
Local Associations (if you are fortunate to have one in your area) who provide programs
and student opportunities.
The 2017 WMTA Conference again offered an informal breakfast chat session for new members as
well as WMTA 101 – a session dedicated to answering questions or concerns about your membership
in WMTA. There was plenty of opportunity to network with members from around the state. If you
have never attended a State Conference, make next year the year you will check out what you have
been missing!
The following WMTA members were recognized for their membership milestones at the Friday night
banquet:
10 Years 25 Years
Amber Bruns Kathryn Freund
Donna Dahm Debbie Masloski
Elisabeth Daniels Deanna Roen
Jennifer Heisinger Marlene Wondergem
Kari Johnson
Elizabeth Korger 40 Years
Lisa Lawrence Laura Eiche
Roxanne Megna Eileen Herrling
Ken Neipert Margaret Otwell
Alexander Sandor Laura Swenson
Juliana Schmidt
Louise Temte 45 Years
Drea Wagner Janet Acker
Amber White Martha Brueggeman
Janet Wolfe Christine Lampos
We mark these anniversaries from the time they became a member of MTNA and recognize them in
our WMTA no matter where they lived before. Thank you to all of you for your years of service!

Thank you to all who attended the October conference in Madison—we had over 110 attendees which
was fantastic! Survey results were very positive (26 responses to date). If you have not completed the
survey, there’s still time to voice your opinion! Click HERE to complete the survey.
Here are some preliminary results:
So, now that the 2017 conference is history, we set our sights on the 2018 conference—and our offi-
cial location (drum roll please!) for 2018 is Elkhart Lake (Osthoff Resort). The dates are October
19-20th. Two things we’re looking for—a few members to serve on the 2018 conference committee
and session proposals! Any member (esp. from the Sheboygan region) are invited to serve on the con-
ference committee. Responsibilities include reviewing proposals, getting advertising/sponsors, han-
dling local publicity, overseeing exhibitors (these are ‘shared’ responsibilities).

Hello Members,
I'd first like to welcome Abby Patchet as our new “Judges Information Manager”. If you are a judge
and have any update contact info please let Abby know at: [email protected]. Welcome Abby!
All District Auditions information can be found on the WMTA website. Please study and review this
information now as you begin to make plans for your students. www.wisconsinmusicteachers.com.
Look under “student events” and then “district auditions”.
*************************************************
TEACHER PARTICIPATION INFORMATION:
“Ovation” is the online site for registering students for participation in WMTA District Auditions.
www.ovation.wmta.net
All teachers who used Ovation for the 2017 auditions still currently have access through the end of
December 2017. By January 1, 2018, these teachers will be “re-activated” if they renewed membership
by paying WMTA dues before the October 15, 2017 deadline. These members will then have Ovation
access Jan. 1 – Dec. 31 of 2018.
WMTA teachers who did not use Ovation in 2017 that wish to enter students in 2018 district audi-
tions, and have paid dues by October 15, 2017, should contact Sandra Statz to be activated in Ovation.
Current WMTA members that renewed and paid membership dues late (after October 15, 2017) must
pay a $100 late renewal fee (written to WMTA) in order to be activated and gain access to log in to
Ovation for the 2018 season. This payment can be sent to Sandra Statz at 2011 Skeels Avenue; Eau
Claire, WI 54701. The teacher will be activated as soon as this payment is received.
****************************************************
GENERAL REMINDERS
Put the auditions date and entry deadline date for your district on your calendar now!
District Chairs have been instructed to enforce all deadlines!
Teachers that enter students in the auditions MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ON AUDITION
DAY! A reliable substitute may take the teacher’s place if this arranged with the District Chairperson
in advance. If a teacher (or substitute) does not arrive to help on auditions day, the teacher will be
charged a $75 fee.

USING OVATION AND REPERTOIRE DATABASE INFORMATION:
To save time during the registration process, look for all of your students’ pieces that may already be
in the database before you begin registering any students. If the piece is not in the database, you will
need to “add composition”. Finding your students’ compositions in the database, (or adding new
pieces if needed), BEFORE you register your students, will significantly speed up the registra-
tion process.
AGAIN, REMEMBER: ALWAYS CHECK THE COMPOSITION DATABASE BEFORE EN-
TERING YOUR STUDENT’S PIECES. THERE’S A VERY GOOD CHANCE THE PIECE OF
MUSIC IS ALREADY IN THE DATABASE!
On that similar note, some teachers may not be aware that there are limits to the lengths of the coposi-
tions chosen, please be sure to go to the “Handbook and Event Rules” under Student Events;
“Choosing Repertoire for District Auditions”, and http://www.wisconsinmusicteachers.com/event-
information-and-rules-handbook/choosing-repertoire”. New this year is that any Junior or Senior
entered in state track are able to request to have additional audition time (up to a total of 20 minutes).
Be sure to contact your local District Chair PRIOR to the Application deadline with your re-
quest if you are in need of the extra time.
For specific questions about allowed repertoire or pieces in the database, contact: Emily Schultz -
Ovation Composition/Database Manager. [email protected]
To do this, when logged into Ovation, select “composition title finder” from the menu options. Select
the composer’s name, leave the “title search string” field blank, and then hit “search”. All titles by that
composer that are in the database will appear in a list.
When logged into Ovation, also take a few minutes to look at the “help” page. The “help” button
is located on the upper right hand side of your screen near the “menu” and “log out” buttons.
*********************************************************
Practice Exams
Practice Exams and answer keys are available on the website to assist you in preparing your students
for the theory exams. http://www.wisconsinmusicteachers.com/event-information-and-rules-
handbook/ musicianship-test

FEES AND FINALIZING YOUR STUDENT ENTRIES:
ENTRY FEES for 2017:
D2 and D2NM: $20.00
D3, state track and duets: $25.00
Students do not pay WMTA directly. Students need to pay their teacher. Each teacher collects all fees
and writes one check to WMTA for the total of all their student entries. There is not a way to pay
online at this time.
After you have entered the audition information for each of your students in Ovation, send the
“teacher fee summary” report form (print from Ovation) and one check written to WMTA for the total
of all their entry fees to the District Chairperson before the entry deadline.

Certification - An Investment Well Worth It
For this newsletter article, rather than bore you with certification statistics or suggest tips and tricks
for going through the certification process, I'd like to share my own story of certification and why I
have continued to renew. During my masters program at Wichita State University, my pedagogy pro-
fessor, Sylvia Coats, suggested that I look into certification. I didn't know what my teaching situation
would be the following year, but I decided to forge ahead.
With the burdens of setting up a camera and tripod in those days accompanied by video file conver-
sion, and the occasional corrupted file, the process was at times frustrating. The paperwork and the
technology coupled with my courses and jobs seemed cumbersome, and I wondered why I was doing
this at the time. However, after taking some time to watch the videos, I noticed a few things very
quickly. I saw my interactions with my student (both the positive elements and the negative ele-
ments). I was able to readily change some of the ways I engaged with my student. The second thing I
noticed was that the changes that I made facilitated a better learning environment for this student, and
I was able to see greater progress in a shorter period of time.
This observation of my own teaching gave me more than I could ever learn in a pedagogy class. Cou-
pled with getting all my studio documents in order, I have a portfolio that has taught me to be more
professional and skills that have allowed me to be more engaging as a teacher. The desire to grow as
a teacher has permeated my career in piano and has given me drive to seek out opportunities to do bet-
ter myself for the sake of my students: attending workshops and conferences, sharing my own passion
as a presenter or adjudicator, getting involved in local and state associations, and networking with col-
leagues locally and around the country. This drive for me undoubtedly stemmed from the pursuit of
certification - of a critical analysis of my own teaching and an eagerness to pursue a professional ave-
nue for music teachers.
If you have questions about certification or would like to share a bit about what certification means to
you, please contact me at [email protected]. Let's make a resolution in 2018 to hold one
another to a higher standard in teaching for our students and local communities as we strive to keep
music education vibrant.

MTNA Foundation Report
I was so excited to introduce the family representing Jane Scheef as our Foundation Fellow at the State
Conference in Madison, WI. However, I needed to leave the conference to seek medical attention.
Good news was that there were no blood clots in my leg. I am still nursing the knees but I am out and
about.
Thank you to Laura Swenson for stepping in and taking care of my responsibilities at the Banquet and
completing the auction activities. Laura introduced Allen Scheef and Kathy Breese (Jane’s sister). Al-
len Scheef provided a DVD of Jane’s life. Everyone could learn about Jane’s accomplishments and
contributions to WMTA.
I am excited to inform everyone that we have collected $1,160.00 for our Fellow Nominee Jane Scheef.
You may continue to send donations in Jane’s honor. Checks can be written out to the MTNA Founda-
tion Fund and can be submitted directly to the National Office. Please write Jane Scheef in the memo
line of the check.
Please follow the link listed here: http://www.mtnafoundation.org/fellow-program/

I want to shout out a huge thank you to all the Local Associations that elected to participate and donate
baskets and monetary donations: Chippewa Valley MTA, Fox Valley MTA, Greater Milwaukee Chap-
ter MTA, Kenosha MTA, Michibago MTA, Oshkosh Area MTA, Rock River MTA, St. Croix Valley
MTA, Stevens Point Area MTA, Wausau Area MTA. The baskets were filled with great gift items and
brought in wonderful donations. I also want to thank many members for their individual donations.

Steps to Reset Password on MTNA website
Last August MTNA updated their website. They sent an email asking each of us to reset our
password so we would be able to access the site. If you are like a lot of us, you didn’t do this
yet. Here are some steps to help you accomplish it. Do it TODAY so you don’t get stuck in a
time crunch down the road.
We never had a password before (so we are really “creating” rather than “resetting” the pass-
word). They are doing this for security purposes. It will work best if you do this on a desktop
or laptop computer. Tablets and phones have a difficult time with the LONG http address you
will need to enter.
1. Enter www.mtna.org.
2. Click Sign in at top of screen.
3. Click Reset my password under SIGN IN tab.
4. Your username is your email address. As soon as you hit SUBMIT, they will send
you an email containing a LONG http address. Copy the ENTIRE address (it might
be 4 lines or so) and paste it in a new browser.
5. You will then be able to select a password, confirm it, and submit it.
6. Once you do this, you will see a page with all your information on it. You will be
able to sign in at any time to update this page as time goes by.
If all else fails, call MTNA and Melissa Curtice or Tonya Schauer will be happy to walk you
through this.

Kayme Henkel was cop-ied on many emails as she is the VP-Conference nominee for next year. Thank you to Heid Music for their generous donations towards Conference this year. Next year’s conference will be held at the Osthoff Re-sort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on October 19th and 20th, 2018. Members who attended Conference this year are asked to help us plan future conferences by participating in a survey. The link for this survey is at http://eSurv.org?s=LJEIOG_97c3b2e5 and will be accepting responses until January 1, 2018.
d. 2nd VP-Membership, Arlyss Troge – As of October 13, 2017, we stand at 414 members and we are still working with a few last minute renewals. We will continue to reach out to collegiate members so the next generation can keep us strong. As of August, MTNA national numbers stand at 16,662 members. This is down 19.6% from last year in part because many members are now renewing in September, but also be-cause new membership isn’t keeping up with non-renewals and retirees.
e. Treasurer, Rachel Fritz – The 2016-2017 year balance was positive $2,688.16. As of September, the current numbers for the 2017-2018 year are $10,364.48 Income from membership dues and conference fees, and $8, 017.05 expenses from Conference, grants and programs. Together they give a current balance of $2,347.43. These numbers have already changed as we draw closer to Conference and will update after Conference, but we are right on track for the year. The audit is currently in process with anticipated com-pletion in mid-November.
V. Reports of Program Chairs a. Arts Awareness and Advocacy, Drew Donica – At the National Conference in March, they focused on the
national budget cuts to the NEA. As of July 12th, the U.S. House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee ap-proved a bill to fund the NEA at $145 million dollars, which is $5 million dollars less than the current fund-ing level. This is a great improvement over the March proposal. It’s not too late to contact a Senator about this issue and Drew can help with anybody who wants more information about how to do this. You can contact him by email at [email protected].

around still before they are official. The District Chairs will be communicating further about the loca-tions as we near the competitions. Please note, Eau Claire District Auditions will have a very fast turn around date for getting entries in.
c. Badger Vocal/Instrumental Competition, Nancy Burman, NCTM – Nancy is still going to run this pro-gram until another individual has interest in taking her place. Badger V/I will be in Stevens Point on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Freeze date for entries will be April 30. For 2017 we had 56 registrants in 11 divisions with 18 participating teachers. These numbers are similar to 2016.
d. College Faculty Representative, Jessica Johnson, NCTM – We have 10 Collegiate attendees registered for Conference this year and 8 students who were selected to present during the poster session at Conference. We are delighted with the positive participation from collegiate members and will con-tinue to provide professional development opportunities for collegiate members.

To do this you can visit the WMTA web-site at www.wisconsinnmusiceachers.com, then “Student Events”, then “District Auditions”. Locations, dates and deadlines for 2018 auditions are also posted there. Emily Schultz will continue to serve on the District Auditions committee and you should email her will all questions regarding auditions reper-toire at [email protected]. Abby Patchet will also be joining the District Auditions Committee to assist with planning and entries in Ovation.
f. High School Virtuoso Competition, Bethany Hartlaub, NCTM – The 2017 competition was held on Saturday, October 7 at Lawrence University in Appleton in concurrence with the MTNA competitions. Only three students participated. Further updates regarding this competition can be reviewed in the Old Business section of these meeting minutes.
g. Independent Music Teachers Forum, Mickey Lytle, NCTM – There will be a panel during Conference this year entitled “You’ve Got Questions… We’ve Got Answers!” featuring Dr. David Mays, a physician, and Scott Haumersen, a CPA. Mickey is also looking for anybody who would like to write an article about the challenges and benefits to being an independent music teacher.
h. Local Associations, Lisa Zwiefelhofer, NCTM – Mary Ann Olvera will be taking over as the new Local Associations Chair. We are happy to report that the Madison Area Piano Teachers Association has re-cently voted to form a WMTA affiliated association and will proceed with the application process this year. Overall the LA membership within Wisconsin is stable. Some groups gained or lost members this past year and the LA presidents will be discussing what is working for some of our groups so that eve-rybody can benefit. Member recruitment continues to be our focus. This past year, Katie Butler cre-ated a poster and tri-fold brochure than can be customized for each local association and used to spread the word and recruit new members. A welcome letter was also sent to new WMTA members listing our state’s local associations and contact information. A committee also reviewed each local association’s constitutions and bylaws to bring them up to date in compliance with FTC requirements.
VI. Standing/Special Committees a. Ovation, Suzanne Fauser – Not Present. There is still small list of improvements that need to be done.
Very few of these will impact auditions this year. Some of the recent and potential changes where discussed as a group.
b. Finance Committee, Rachel Fritz – No report. c. Nominating committee, Catherine Walby, NCTM – Nominations from the committee were an-
nounced in June as Rachel Fritz for President Elect, Kayme Henkel as VP of Conferences, Drea Wagner as VP of Membership and Drew Donica as Badger Keyboard Chair. We are still looking for somebody as a treasurer nominee. The vote on President Elect will take place at the Annual Business Meeting dur-ing Conference this year.
VII. Old Business a. High School Virtuoso Competition – The Board reviewed participation numbers for this program over
the past few years and discussed the benefits of continuing to offer it in the future. It was put in place because of requirement differences that no longer exist. Rachel Fritz moved that we discontinue the HS Virtuoso Competition. Bethany Hartlaub seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
b. Language for the 11th and 12th Groups – Language still needs to be changed in the handbook and on the website to allow for all 11th and 12th graders to request a longer audition. Currently, the hand-books reads only students preparing for a college audition.

c. Points Rubric Updates – Judging expectations were discussed to determine if there is a need to modify our universal language for the judges in Wisconsin to make the comments more consistent for new judges. A committee will be getting together at Conference to discuss potential changes so further discus-sion can be made at the next meeting.
VIII. New Business a. Compensation for Competition Judge – Right now the adjudicator’s receive $20 per piece. The fee is only
$25 and the competition has cash prizes. The board discussed the balance of funds as well as the time needed to judge a composition. More discussion will be made on this issue at a future meeting.
b. Points for Composition Competition – Ovation is not coded to enter composition points separately. Catherine Walby will look at old minutes to see what was decided about these points and report back.
c. Office Supplies – Some miscellaneous supplies were cleared out of the old office and the board discussed how to distribute the items.
d. Ovation Review – There were many early problems with the Ovation release, but most have now been resolved. Nick received an unsolicited communication from a student website developer with a quote of $5,000 (minimum) to correct all the current issues. During discussion the board was reminded that we have currently spent over $21,00 on the site. Catherine Walby motioned to decline the offer. Nancy Bur-man seconded. Rachel Fritz called for a vote. The board voted unanimously to kindly not accept the offer at this time.
e. Position Restructuring – The board discussed the current need for this position of Collaborative Perform-ance Forum Chair, after Diana Shapiro’s resignation. There is no requirement from MTNA to have the position or a directive on how to shape the position. The point was made that is good for the board to have introductory level leadership positions that help train members for other leadership positions in the future, and agreed to keep the position. It also benefits members through experience and continued pro-fessional development. The Composition Database Manager and Theory Chair will become committee members serving the District Auditions Chair. Further discussion will be made on this at a future meeting, and our bylaws will need to be amended.
f. Jane Scheef Money – The Board discussed the $1,000 that Jane’s estate bequeathed to WMTA. Jane was passionate about attending the National Conference. The potential of offering grants for attending Con-ference was discussed. Catherine Walby motioned to make five $200 grants available to members for the 2018 Conference, with preference given to first time attendees, with application parameters to be deter-mined by the Executive Board over the next few days. Nancy Burman seconded. Discussion was made. An addendum was made to push the funds towards the next year if appropriate applications aren’t turned in this year. Nancy called for the vote. Motion passed unanimously.
IX. Announcements – The next Executive Board meeting will be held via teleconference on February 2nd at 10:00am. The following meeting will be June 1st in Waunakee at 9:30am to noon with Administrative Council following at 1:00pm.
