On the Cover: “Carpetbag” by TL Solien, 2008, 30" x 36", acrylic/ink/collage on paper.

“Over the last few years I have produced a body ofmixed -media drawings. My research involves the Amer-ican historical experience of the late 19th and early20th centuries. I am actively researching narrativesfrom the primary period of the American westward ex-pansion into the Great Plains, and capped in the perioddefined by Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal.

Congruently, I am interested in the formal and materialreality of the images that I produce, and the ability of acontrolled pictorial strategy, defined through materialchoices, to dictate emotional and intellectual engage-ment and response.”
