Welcome!

As Governor, it is always a pleasure providing visitors with another reason to visit Wisconsin and this time I invite you to discover our arts. For 39 years, the Art & Craft Fairs Directory has been an invaluable guide for art enthusiasts, tourists and artists alike and one that I hope you will use again and again.

Travel our highways and discover a plein air festival, folk art and other creative pursuits as we celebrate an industry that not only employs 50,000 people in our state, but showcases Wisconsin’s originality and imagination. Whether you prefer painting, sculpture, fine arts or crafts in one of our small towns or urban centers, you will find it listed in this comprehensive guide.

Join us where the arts are alive and vibrant and where our artists produce tangible memories for you to take home after your visit.

Sincerely,

Scott Walker Governor

Art Schools in WisconsinThe pristine beauty of Wisconsin continues to serve as inspiration and muse to over 3,000 Wisconsin artists. Whether it’s the rustic environment of the Northwoods or the rolling hills of southern Dane County, Wisconsin’s landscape captivates an artist’s eye. Should a desire to experience the artistic process first-hand awaken in you, one of the many schools found in Wisconsin can answer this call. Retreat and immerse yourself in the creative spirit with one of these options.

Dillman’s Creative Arts Foundation, Lac du Flambeau: Dillman’s three state-of-the-art studios host internationally known instructors. Expansive programs range from painting in encaustic, oil, or acrylic, pastel, to photography, quilting, and writing. www.dillmans.com

School of the Arts at Rhinelander: Make plans to join Rhinelander’s School of the Arts, July 17-19, 2015 for their 52nd anniversary. This one-week arts immersion course includes intro to drawing, glass fusion, etching, portraits, landscapes and plein air painting. http://continuingstudies.wisc.edu

Bjorklunden - Lawrence University Seminar Center: Baileys Harbor Bequeathed to Lawrence University in 1963, Björklunden vid Sjön (Birch Forest by the Water), a 425 acre estate on Lake Michigan, offers extensive adult-education seminars from Shakespeare’s poetry to watercolor to music. www.lawrence.edu

Peninsula School of Art, Fish Creek: For over 45 years, Peninsula School of Art has been a year-round destination for artists and art enthusiasts of all ages and levels. Programs include painting, drawing, metal arts, ceramics, sculpture and photography. www.peninsulaschoolofart.com

The Clearing Folk School, Ellison Bay: Believing that one’s own regional ecology and culture is fundamental, Jens Jensen founded The Clearing as a place where instruction is non-competitive. Their folk school is a unique place where adults who share an interest in nature, arts or humanities can learn, reflect and wonder. www.theclearing.org

Washington Island Art and Nature Center: A 1904 schoolhouse serves as the Art & Nature Center (ANC). Whether hosting lectures on nature, or children’s workshops in origami, ANC is devoted to the preservation and promotion of the creative arts and natural history of Washington Island. www.wianc.org

Madeline Island School of the Arts: A restored dairy farm surrounded by Lake Superior is home to one of the country’s premier art and craft schools, Madeline Island School of the Arts. Accessible only by ferry, boat, plane, wind sled or car (when the lake is frozen), classes in painting, quilting, writing, photography are offered for college credit. www.madelineartschool.com

Shake Rag Alley School of Arts & Crafts, Mineral Point: Shake Rag Alley’s list of classes entices youth and adult of all skill levels. With over 200 offerings, this school is always busy. Whether it’s a half-day class or full week retreat, spots fill up fast so advanced planning is encouraged. 2www.shakeragalley.com

Whispering Woodlands, Verona: One woman’s vision and dream became a school hosting local professional artists as instructors. View their work then learn their techniques in workshops ranging from fiber arts to encaustic. www.whispering-woodlands.com

Indigenous or Native Art of WisconsinNative American art is about evolution. While works by Wisconsin Native artists can be rooted in tradi-tion, it also has important things to say about the modern world and the future. Some Native Wisconsin artists take the traditional and lend it a new twist, for art is created in the present, not frozen in time.

Going to the original source of art will always provide you with an experience – it’s where stories can be shared and mutual understandings grow. Here, you can learn from the artists themselves and cele-brate Wisconsin’s history through its diverse culture. We encourage you to explore further.

Morrow’s Native Art, HaywardArtist and teacher Ramona Morrow of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and

Yankton Sioux, provides gallery space for her Cattail dolls along with numerous Native artists from the Hayward area. Morrow’s offers a wide variety of “Hand Crafted” Native American art including bead work, birch and ash baskets, headdresses, regalia, moccasins, cradle boards, dream catchers and paintings. www.morrowsnativeart.net

Native Spirit Gifts & Gallery, BayfieldNative Spirit Gifts & Gallery calls out to the traveler seeking fine Native arts. Located on the Red

Cliff Indian Reservation, this gallery offers traditional Anishinabe Ojibwe (Chippewa) art from the Great Lakes Region. Works include bead work, locally made birch bark baskets, full size hand-crafted birch bark canoes, dream catchers, quill boxes, books, and music. www.hawkdancer.com/nsgg.htm

Woodland Indian Art Center, Lac du FlambeauWoodland Indian Art Center is home to a gallery featuring Native Woodland regional artwork as well

as a thriving cultural center. Both traditional and contemporary artwork is represented in its carvings, birch bark baskets, jewelry, paintings and bead work. Additionally, classes, workshops and demonstra-tions in music, writing and dancing round out this center’s offerings. http://woodlandindianartcenter.org

Chief Oshkosh Native American Arts, Egg HarborChief Oshkosh in Egg Harbor has been an outlet for Wisconsin Native American artists for over 60

years. Roy Oshkosh, leader of the Menominee Nation, established the business as Chief Oshkosh Trading Post on land once popular as a summer site for Native Americans. The gallery features works by water-colorist Dawn Dark Mountain of Madison, painter Mary Prescott, doll maker Judith Jourdan of Oneida, and wooden flute maker Michael Farmer of Baileys Harbor. An amphitheater in back provides space for performance art. 920/868-3240

Indian Summer Festival (September 11-13, 2015), Milwaukee’s LakefrontIndian Summer Festival is the state’s largest American Indian cultural event celebrating the traditions,

foods, games, stories, and art of Native Americans. The festival’s Circle of Art exhibit features fine art cu-rated from Native artists across North America through a juried process. In addition, artisans demonstrate their crafts from wood carving, basket weaving and beadwork to pottery. www.indiansummer.org

Museum of Wisconsin Art, West BendThe Museum of Wisconsin Art is the primary venue for visitors to experience the best of Wisconsin

art, from historic to contemporary. Since opening a new building in April 2013, MOWA has continued its commitment to engaging diverse audiences and exploring Native American art and its place in the Wis-consin art scene by adding pieces to its permanent collection and also featuring a series of exhibitions and programs that focus on the Native American experience. www.wisconsinart.org

The Art of UpcyclingBefore you throw out a ripped shirt, old sheet music, or a broken bike lock, stop and think about the possibilities. The Art of Upcycling is all about redesigning, re-imaging and repurpos-ing items that would otherwise be thrown out. Maybe there are ways to create a purse out of the shirt, wrapping paper from the sheet music, or a sculpture from the lock.

We live in a state that is rich in natural re-sources and promotes environmental-friendly communities. Upcycling is a unique and artis-tic way to preserve our resources by converting discarded materials into higher quality products like sculptures, jewelry, and clothing. Not to mention the added incentive of a positive envi-ronmental impact – items that would otherwise be tossed in landfills are recreated into useful products.

Upcycling has been on the craft fair scene for decades as old paint tins are cut into petals for floral yard art and neckties are being sewn together to create skirts. Boutiques and shops have started specializing in upcycled goods that rival the quality of department stores but with an advantage of being one-of-a-kind, and as an added bonus they’re better for the environment!

LET YOUR (ECO) CONSCIENCE REST EASY IN WISCONSIN

April 22, 1970. The first Earth Day. Founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin to raise environmental consciousness.

Wisconsinites continue to dig in to the Earth Day tenets of preserving the environment and enhancing our quality of life.

That brings us to the notion of an eco-friendly vacation, a concept the Wisconsin Department of Tourism pioneered when it launched Travel Green Wisconsin ™ in 2006. Travel Green was the first certification program in the country that went beyond accommodations to include tourism businesses of all sorts-events, attractions, restaurants, and everything in between.

So if leaving a lighter footprint is important to you, then consider patronizing the hundreds of Travel Green Wisconsin ™ certified businesses when visiting. Visit travelwisconsin.com for a listing.

To summarize: Go green. Have fun. Rest easy.
