Check your credit ratingA CONTINUING lack of

credit data aware-ness could be stalling

the first time buyer market –despite a 17% increase infirst-time-buyer mortgageproducts, according toEquifax.

Moneysupermarket foundthat, in July, the number offirst-time buyer mortgageproducts soared by 17%recently. There are now 312products available for thosewith a 10% deposit – thehighest number sinceNovember 2008, when thecredit crunch first hit. Thisis good news for first-timebuyers who, until recently,have had to source a depositof 25% or more to get a gooddeal.

However, the leadinginstant online creditinformation provider,Equifax, is concerned thatfirst-time buyers could bemissing out, simply becausethey don’t understand theimportance of their creditinformation.

Research by Equifax hasfound that one in threeconsumers, who applied for acredit card in the last year,were refused because theyhad a poor credit rating.

Neil Munroe, Equifax’sexternal affairs director, isconcerned that the same fatecould befall first timemortgage applicants –especially as a third of thosewho were declined theircredit card application

actually had no idea whythey were turned down.

Neil believes this highlights

a continuing lack ofunderstanding amongstconsumers about the role

that credit information playsin their ability to access allforms of new credit,including mortgages.

He says: “It’s vital that first-time buyers understand whatinformation is used bymortgage providers to assesstheir credit worthiness, aswell as how they can makesure their credit rating is atits best for them to get themost favourable deal.

“Something as simple asthe fact that they’re notregistered on the electoralroll, could hamper anindividual’s ability to gain agood mortgage. Or, it mightbe that a credit agreementthey had forgotten about isshowing as having anoutstanding balance, which

could count against theircredit score.

“We recommend that first-time buyers check theircredit report before theystart applying for mortgages.And, if their application isrefused, they should stopapplying and ask the lenderwhy.”

Neil adds: “In our recentsurvey, over 50% of those whowere refused a new creditcard simply gave up applying– yet if they had checkedtheir credit file they mayhave found they could dosomething to improve theirchances in the future. Thesame could be true of first-time buyers who are socrucial to stimulating thehouse buying market.”
