simple majority of members at the Annual General Meeting each year. The qualification for Honorary Membership shall be “special service” to W.G.F.C. Upon election, Honorary Members are entitled to enjoy the same rights and benefits as Full Members, save that they have no voting power.

II. FULL MEMBERS: being persons aged 18 years or over. Full Members are entitled to

exercise full voting and fishing rights.

Registered Junior Members have no voting or fishing rights save that they are entitled to share the use of a Full or Five Day Member’s rod. The registered Junior Member must be accompanied by that sponsoring member at all times when on a water where the rules allow Junior Members. That Full or Five Day Member is responsible for the behaviour of the registered Junior Member. V. SOCIAL MEMBERS: being persons aged eighteen years or over. Social Members are not entitled to exercise voting or fishing rights but in the event of a Social Member seeking Full Membership, under Clause 3 d), his application for such membership shall receive priority from the Committee in the exercise of its discretion as to the admission of new members. Disciplinary Procedure (Nov 2009)

Members are required to abide by the Club Rules described in the Handbook and to uphold the good reputation of the Club. A Member, who contravenes the Club Rules, interferes with the function of the Club or acts in a manner likely to damage the reputation of the Club, will be subject to the following disciplinary procedure.

1.0 Initiation of the procedure

When the Committee is informed of a breach Club Rules by a Member or of potential damage to the Club or its reputation by a Member’s action the disciplinary procedure will be initiated.

2.0 Notice of disciplinary meeting

The Secretary will write to the Member informing him that a report of a breach of the rules or information suggesting that Member’s action was likely to result in damage to the reputation of the Club had been brought to the attention of the Committee and that a Disciplinary Meeting would be held. The Member will automatically be suspended from fishing some or all of the Club’s waters and will be notified that he is required to come before the Disciplinary Committee of the Club. The Secretary will also provide details of the alleged breach of the rules or any actions by the Member that in the consideration of the Committee would impact adversely on the reputation of the Club. The Member will be informed of the date and venue of the meeting and asked to write back and acknowledge this confirming his intention to attend. Should it not be possible for the member to attend with good reason then the Secretary will attempt to find an alternative date - however the Disciplinary Committee reserve the right to insist on the date originally set.

3.0 Disciplinary Committee

The Disciplinary Committee will be made up of three members of the Club Committee supported by the Secretary who will keep a record of the proceedings.

4.0 Attendance

A Member called to a Disciplinary Meeting will be entitled to bring a ‘friend’ to observe and if appropriate a witness in his support. The Secretary must be informed of the intention of a Member to bring such a person to the meeting.

5.0 Procedure

a) The Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee will open the proceedings by introducing the Committee to the Member and reiterating the reasons why it was thought necessary to instigate the disciplinary procedure.

b) The Member will be asked to provide a defence or rebuttal, and any mitigating factors the he would wish the Committee to consider. He will be entitled to call upon a witness in support of his case.

c) The Committee will then ask questions in order to ensure that all relevant details have been provided for their consideration. The Member will be asked if there are any additional matters not considered that could influence the Committee’s deliberations.

d) The Member will be asked to retire while the Committee deliberates.

e) When the Committee has deliberated the Member will be asked to return to the meeting at which point the Chairman will announce the Committee’s conclusions and inform the member of the disciplinary action to be taken.

Appeal

An individual will have the right to appeal the decision of the disciplinary committee to the full Committee of the Club.

Determination

On conclusion of the disciplinary process the decision will be reported to the full Committee of the Club at its next meeting and thereafter to the next Club meeting.

Waters Glan-y-Wern Lake

OS map reference SJ 096 659 A small lake of approximately 3 acres set in beautiful surroundings in the Clwyd valley between Denbigh and Llandyrnog. The season is usually February to September but exact dates will be posted on the website. It is well stocked by the Club with rainbow trout mostly in excess of 2 lbs and is for the exclusive use of WGFC members. There is a fishing hut and at least three boats available for members. The hut and boats are secured by a combination padlock - see your Club card for the combination. The oars for the boats and life jackets are kept in the hut. The wearing of a life jacket or buoyancy aid is mandatory when boat fishing. Members must ensure that the life jackets and oars are secured in the hut, the hut locked and the padlocks replaced on the boats before leaving. Please clean the boat after use.

How to get there:

From the A541 Mold - St. Asaph road: - At Bodfari take the B5429 towards Llandyrnog. At the roundabout take the right turn on to an unclassified road towards the A525 Denbigh. After approximately 1000m the entrance to Glan-y-Wern Hall is on the right, 50m further turn into an entrance with a double gate and a club lock on it. Once through the gate follow the track to the car park at the end. Please ensure the entrance gates are kept closed and locked.

From the A 525 Ruthin - St. Asaph road: - At Denbigh leave the A525 at the roundabout into the unclassified road heading towards Llandyrnog. Approximately 300m past the bridge over the River Clwyd the entrance to fishery is on the left – 50m before the entrance to Glan-y-Wern Hall.

Access to the water From the car park follow the path along the bank to the fishing hut. There may be nesting swans near the hut but they are not normally aggressive if treated with respect. Water information This is a fly only fishery and barbless or de-barbed hooks must be used at all times with a maximum of two flies per cast. Until 1st March only catch and release is allowed, thereafter, the limit is 1 fish per day with a limit of 2 fish per week per angler. Members may continue to fish catch and release after taking their limit. The logbook in the hut must be filled in before leaving the water, including ‘blank’ returns, stocking frequency relies on this information.

Filters are fitted to the inlet and outlet to the lake and Members are asked to check that they are clear of debris and the water is flowing freely. If you are unhappy about the water flow please contact the Beat Manager. The is a solar panel that powers the “algae buster” on a platform in the lake, please take care not to damage it with boats.

Predators: Members are asked to report any signs of mink, cormorants or damaged fish. Photos will help. Please move any scarecrows (scare cormorants) to a new position when you arrive.

Poachers: If you suspect poachers are on the water, do not approach them, ring the Police on 999

Guests: Guests allowed from 1st June until the water closes, usually 31st August. Junior & Interim members allowed all season. Junior members to be accompanied by sponsor. Guest & Interim members must be accompanied by a Full or 5 Day Member.

Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted. Fish Returns: Ensure returns are filled in even if Nil. This information is to aid in fish stocking

Llyn Brenig

A large reservoir of approximately 920 acres set high on the Denbigh Moors at 1230 feet above sea level. It is the venue for international and national competitions, is maintained to a very high standard and is stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Fishing is from both bank and boats. Because of the topography, there are always sheltered bays and banks whatever the wind direction. However, be warned - because of its elevation the lake can be very cold and windy at any time of the year. There is also some pike fishing available with details at the lodge or on the website. In 2015 it is likely that the lake will remain open for trout fishing all year. The Visitors Centre has a café, which is open for breakfasts most weekends and a tackle shop. Cycles can be hired and there is a display of archaeological remains. There is a range of interesting walks around the lake as well as bird watching. How to get there The reservoir is well signposted from all directions and is best accessed from the A5 to the south and the A543 to the north. From the A5 (or the B4501 from Ruthin) - go to Cerrigydrudion and then take the B4501 to the lake. From Denbigh - take the A543 Pentrefoelas road or the B4501 Nantglyn road. Access to the water Booking is essential - your Club membership card must be carried and produced to a bailiff on demand. WGFC members are now required to call in and register at the Visitors Centre before fishing and Members must make themselves familiar with the rules of the fishery and abide by them. Fishing is from 8 am until one hour after sunset. Fishing is fly only with a bag limit of 6 takeable fish unless otherwise advised at the lodge. Members may hire a boat at the Visitors Centre (Tel. 01490 420 463) on payment of the boat fee - if fishing with one of the Club’s four rods. It is advisable to check on the availability of boats, which may be in short supply on competition days. Boats are available after 9 am. Members must complete a catch return card and post it in one of the returns boxes as they leave. Catch return cards are available at the Visitors Centre. WGFC should be entered as the season ticket holder. Safety It is compulsory for anglers fishing from the boats to wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket. Buoyancy aids are available from the Fishing Lodge currently at no cost. Guests: WGFC Guests not allowed. See Fishing for Guests (page 74) Note 1. Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted.

River Conwy - Fairy Glen & Beaver Pool (Day) An attractive stretch of the Conwy providing over 1 mile of right hand bank fishing, flowing in part through the picturesque Fairy Glen, which is designated an SSSI and is located south-east of Betws-y-Coed. Upstream of the Tyn-y-Cae Pool the river flows through very rough and rocky terrain and should only be tackled by physically fit anglers wearing suitable footwear and you are strongly advised to take a partner. NB. The 4 day rods must finish fishing by one hour before sunset to allow the water to settle for night fishing. The beat is combined with the Beaver Pool for day fishing only. The 4 day rods fish dawn until 1 hour before sunset. The 2 night rods can fish from dawn until the following dawn; there can be 4 rods on the beat during the day but only 2 rods at night. To the top of the beat. (Steep, rough and rocky) - From Pentrefoelas take the A5 towards Betws-y-Coed. At the junction with the B4406 turn left into car park of the Conwy Falls Café.

Access to the Water - A request to the proprietors will allow access through the café free of charge on production of your WGFC membership card, otherwise it is a small charge through the turnstile to the right of the café. There is also a small lay-by just past the café, giving access via a path to the river.

To the bottom of the beat. (Tyn-y-Cae Pool, etc.) -Continue past the Conwy Falls Café towards Betws-y-Coed to the A470 junction on the left. Take the A470 towards Blaenau Ffestiniog, following the road a short distance, taking a left turn immediately after the Fairy Glen Hotel and before crossing the river by the Beaver Pool. The track is signed to 'Cwmanog Isaf Farm'. Drive past the Car Park on the left and take the next left turning into the farm yard, park on the left so as not to cause any obstruction. Car stickers must be displayed to identify your vehicle as authorised to park. Parking is free to members. Night fishers please park so you can drive straight out.

Access to the Water - Access to the Tyn-y-Cae Pool is via a gate a little further along the lane opposite the farm. It is not necessary to pay to pass through the gate. The owners of the farm are Mr and Mrs Hughes who can offer B&B to Members Tel: 01690 710225

Water information Essentially a spate river and the level can rise very quickly. Fishing the gorge can be dangerous because of its steep nature and rocks which can be very slippery, coupled with fast flowing water. There are a number of good rock pools in the glen which hold fish in the autumn; it’s possible to fish the fly in the gorge. The beat extends from below the Conwy Falls but due to EA restrictions you can only fish 100m downstream of the fish pass, right hand bank only, as far as the A470 bridge over the river at the head of the Beaver Pool. There is no access from the fenced bank at the bottom of the Beat for conservation reasons but Members may wade if the conditions are safe. The river is noted mainly for salmon but also carries sea-trout which can attain a large size. The Tyn-y-Cae Pool is suitable for sea-trout fishing at night. Wading is unnecessary and inadvisable. You can phone the River Conwy level gauge on 01690 710 728 or check the online information at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/riverlevels/120770.aspx. If travelling any distance it is wise to check river conditions before setting out for a day`s fishing. You may ring Glyn Jones on 01492 640 680 between 6-7 pm for up to date information and advice Guests: No Guests, Junior or Interim Members allowed. Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted. However they have to pay entrance fee as indicated on gate to the river.

River Conwy - Beaver Pool The Club has the right bank of the Beaver Pool and this provides salmon and sea trout fishing on one of the best pools on the river. How To Get There As per the Fairy Glen. We have arranged parking in the Fairy Glen car park for day fishing please put £1 as a voluntary donation in the box at the entrance to the Glen (path to Tyn-y-Cae). There is no night parking on this car park but if there is space you can park in the farm (where we park for Tyn-y-Cae) please check who is fishing Tyn-y-Cae first and if the parking spaces are to be used you should park on the opposite side of the river, where you would park for the Upper Gwydyr fishing and walk back to the entrance. The entrance to this beat is via the steel gate about 50 metres past the Fairy Glen Hotel in the direction of Betws y Coed. There is no parking near the entrance. Please take great care especially when exiting as the road is narrow and there is a lot of traffic and we recommend tackling up and down at the hut. Water Information This is a short stretch of the right hand bank of the Conwy from Beaver Bridge to the fence into the field (opposite the island). Day rods are included within the Fairy Glen beat and must finish by two hours before sunset in order to rest the pool for night fishing. Entrance to the beat is via the gate and down steps to the riverbank but there is no longer a hut at the top of the steps as a falling tree destroyed it. Please take care when crossing the bridge as the road is narrow and there is a lot of traffic, it will be safer to tackle up when you reach the hut. The water on the right hand bank is deep; we plumbed the depth when we removed a tree recently and the depth ranges from 15 ft right at the edge to 24 ft in the middle, it is therefore recommended that for safety reasons you wear a buoyancy aid when fishing this bank and we will place two in the hut at the start of the night fishing season. The main night fishing lies will be in the pool downstream of the steps where there are two casting platforms enabling members to fish the tail of the pool these two platforms are known as 'Jetty' and 'Bamboo Island'. You can wade upstream from Bamboo Island and in normal sea trout fishing heights you will not go more than knee deep, there are two rocks just upstream from Bamboo Island that just show at a good night fishing height but the bottom drops away steeply beyond these rocks (toward the opposite bank) so DO NOT wade beyond the two rocks. For salmon fishing there are lies throughout the length of the pools and the fish are likely to be lying near our bank. Particularly good spots are just below the bridge, in the back eddy, and from the point called the “Steps” just upstream of the hut where steps have been cut in the rock. Fish also tend to rest in the tail after entering the pool and can be reached from Bamboo Island. Day Fishing: As the amount of fishing for two rods is limited we have included the day fishing as part of the Fairy Glen beat, if you book the Fairy Glen you have access to the Beaver Pool for day fishing but must finish two hours before sunset. Night Fishing: The Club has withdrawn the agreement to share the pool with the Gwydyr rods after losing access to the Gwydyr water, members can therefore fish every night. We will be strictly enforcing the rule that rods on the opposite bank cannot pass the halfway point and this effectively means that no angler on the far bank can cast into the main lies that are close to our bank. Members wanting to fish alone at night can book both rods without the need to pay for a guest ticket.

Guests: No Guests, Junior or Interim Members allowed.

Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted.

River Lledr The Club has two and a half miles of right hand bank fishing on this classic spate river. The river has fast runs, waterfalls, deep gullies and splendid rock pools and is suitable for spinning and bait fishing. There are also 3 good fly pools at the top of the beat. It is a very productive beat for salmon and sea trout when the conditions are right. The river rises and falls very quickly and timing your visit to coincide with good water conditions is essential for good results. NB. Good studded footwear is essential as the rocks can be very slippery and there is a certain amount of climbing involved in getting to the fish and it is recommended that you fish with a companion. A long handled landing net may be an advantage. How to get there - OS map reference SH 758 538 to 790 540 (top) and SH 758 538 to 790 540 (bottom). From the A5 - Just south of Betws-y-Coed take the A470 in the direction of Dolgellau. (1) The turning for Tan-ael -Droch Farm is 2 miles along the road - about 0.5 mile after passing under a railway bridge. Cross the river bridge and park on the hard standing in front of the caravan. You can also park in the field on the left if the gate is unlocked. (2) Take the first left, crossing the River Lledr. Then take the first right at the National Trust sign Ty Mawr. Follow the road for approximately one and a half miles and take the right turn down a steep slope to Bryn Lledr Farm parking is limited as the farm is used as a B&B. You must phone Mike Roy on 01690 710820 to confirm that a parking space is available. On arrival, make contact and agree arrangements on how car keys may be made available should the need arise to move the car. If no one is around, secret your keys and post note through letterbox indicating where keys are hidden. Park on the grassy area on the left or as directed by Mike Roy. A public footpath passes behind the farm and leads to the Lledr close to the Girder Pool - some 150-200 yds. Water information Fishing is from 6.30 am until dusk. No person shall be allowed to coach each on any part of the river. When another rod wishes to fish a pool or run, it must be vacated after 30 minutes or by mutual consent the newly arrived rod may commence fishing up-stream and a good ten paces from the occupant rod. There is a catch limit - 2 fish per pool. Immediately following the capture of a fish the rod must vacate a pool or run in favour of a waiting rod. There are two sanctuary areas on the beat - marked with white paint (faded) on the rocks- which are strictly non-fishing:-

1. The gully below the Narrows and Greanllyn Pool. 2. The area between Gethins and the White Bridge (footbridge)

By agreement with the Gwydyr Hotel we have priority on the White Pool and they on the Slit Pool. Rods must immediately give way to a rod on the other bank wishing to fish the pool. Tan-ael-Droch Farm - Jenny Peel and Margaret Ruegg Bryn Lledr Farm - Mike Roy – 01690 710820 Guests: Guests allowed from 18th Oct until 31st August and must be accompanied by a Full or 5 Day Member. No Junior or Interim members allowed Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted.

Wirral Game Fishing Club

REV A Nov 2006 - 22 -

River Clwyd - Rhewl Farm The Clwyd is a lowland river that colours after rain and is slow to clear. This beat often fishes well for a week after the Elwy has run off. There is approximately 1 mile of right hand bank with a number of small pools and lies that hold salmon, sea trout and brown trout. It is mainly spinning; shrimp and worming water, but there are many pools where a fly can be used and some of these pools are suitable for night fishing. The fish reach this beat quite quickly off the tide but move through quickly on anything but low water. The Clwyd gauge is located about half a mile downstream of this beat. How to get there OS map reference SJ 052 738 to 045 745. From the A55 Chester direction - leave the A55 at Junction 28 at the bottom of Rhuallt Hill onto the B5429 which is signposted to Trefnant and almost immediately turn right onto a new road that shortly becomes a rougher lane. The long driveway to Rhewl Farm is on the right about 200 yds along the lane. Go down the drive, through the gate into the farmyard, and park on the grass to your right along with the farm machinery. If you have booked the beat in combination with Rhyl & St. Asaph AS Pont Dafydd beat carry on the A55 a few hundred metres to the next junction (27A) and park just through the double gate right on the slip road. Walk up the right bank to access Rhewl Farm. Access to the water Follow the track on the right of the parking area to the field and wheel tracks will lead you to the bottom gate. Across the field is another gate that takes you roughly to the middle of the beat – we have two fields upstream and one down. Vehicle access to the river is available in dry conditions but be aware of possible cattle damage to your car. Please be sure to close all gates behind you unless you find them open. NB: No Sunday Fishing on this beat. Farmer: Merion Jones Tel: 01745 582287 Guests: Guests allowed each season until 31st August. Junior & Interim Members allowed all season. Junior Members to be accompanied by their sponsor. Guest & Interim members must be accompanied by a Full or 5 Day Member. Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted.

River Elwy - Wigfair Hall

How to get there OS map reference – SJ 023 703 to SJ 031 710.

This is a scenic stretch of the Elwy with mostly double bank fishing. WGFC share this beat with Capenhurst Anglers but the beat is lightly fished by both clubs, the lower part of the beat is difficult for Capenhurst to access but we now have access to the bottom of this beat by car via Bryn Wygan farm. NB: Dolbedyr is a holiday cottage owned by the Landmark Trust so when on the lower part of the beat please keep noise to an absolute minimum, particularly at night, as any complaints could lose our access by car. The beat has some fly fishing water but is largely treed over and casting can be challenging however the beat is good for spinning and worming. This is a spate river and the correct conditions are critical. Advice on current conditions can be obtained from Foxon`s during normal shop hours on 01745 583 583. The beat holds a head of brown trout and they can be taken on the fly under most conditions using small stream tactics, there is a hatch of mayfly although it is mainly confined to just a few pools with a silty bottom.

Bottom of the beat. - WGFC has exclusive parking via Bryn Wygan farm that provides easy access to the right hand bank. If you intend to night fish you must call the farmer on 01745 730474 before 20:00 on the night you are fishing.

Directions to Bryn Wygan Farm: from Trefnant traffic lights on the A525 take the B5428 sign posted Henllan, go straight across at the cross roads, after approximately half a mile there is a road entering on the right hand side, then you will see a stone wall on the right, about 200 yds from the junction, this is the entrance to Bryn Wygan farm. Turn into the farm entrance and follow the road to the farm (about half a mile). Just before you get to the farm yard (DO NOT GO INTO THE FARM YARD) there is a gate on the right with a large sign which says ‘Close the gate’, go through this gate and follow the track down to the river, please make sure you close all gates. Follow the track downhill and you will see Dolbedyr on the left (white building with stone wall around it). Drive past Dolbedyr and at the end of the track there is a gate on the left, open the gate and park in the fenced off area, please note this area is defined Tir Gofal (nature corridor) please park sensibly. When night fishing please park so you are ready to drive out so as to minimise disturbance to Dolbedyr. If the field is dry and there are no cattle you can drive across the field to the river by turning left at the bottom of the hill, before Dolbedyr, or using the gate at the rear of the car park.

Top of the beat: from Trefnant traffic lights on the A525 take the B5428 sign posted Henllan, go straight across at the cross roads and continue for approximately 1.5 miles. Then take a narrow lane on your right (it is on a blind left hand bend and almost a reverse turn) signposted to Bont-Newydd. Continue for approximately 1 mile, at the bottom of the hill park in the small lay-by with a metal five bar gate on the right just before you cross the Afon Meirchion stream.

Access to the water – On the right hand side of the bridge over the Afon Meirchion there is an access gate (lock code 2003) or, via the gate in the lay-by (lock code 1968) onto a footpath and follow the stream to the Elwy. From where the Afon Meirchion enters the Elwy to the Rock Pool (cliffs on right hand bank) is right hand bank fishing only, the remainder of the beat is double bank. Wading across just above the cliffs is easy on low water, or you can climb over the cliff at the bottom of this stretch to reach the lower beat – this is not recommended!

Guests: Guests allowed each season until 31st August. Junior & Interim Members allowed all season. Junior Members to be accompanied by sponsor. Guest & Interim Members must be accompanied by a Full or 5 Day Member.

Non-fishing Companions: Are permitted.

River Elwy - Kinmel Beat One

(Near Bodelwyddan) A beat of just over half a mile of right hand bank fishing on the Kinmel Estate. The Elwy is a spate river that only fishes well during the day when there is water on. There are salmon, sea trout and good wild brown trout to be caught. Advice on current conditions can be obtained from Foxon`s during normal shop hours on 01745 583 583. The Black Pool is an excellent night fishing pool but the space is limited - see note below. NB. We share the water with other syndicate rods and if a pool is occupied you should inform the occupant that you wish to fish and will return in one hour. The rod must then vacate the pool in your favour for at least one hour. If the pool is large enough two anglers may share it by mutual agreement - following each other down and keeping moving. Courtesy and common sense must be applied on the Kinmel beats. In the event of any disagreement or incident members must withdraw immediately without confrontation and contact the Club at the first opportunity. How to get there OS map reference SH 978 730 to 985 725 From the A55 - Leave the A55 at the St. Asaph Business Park Exit (J26). At the first island bear right then at the second island take the 3rd exit onto the B5381 towards Betws-yn-Rhos until you see a large signpost opposite the gate to Bodelwyddan Park. Turn left and then continue into the village of Cefn Meiriadog. In the village take the first right and then follow the lane for about a mile to a crossroads (the right hand turn is a rough lane) turn left and continue about a mile down to Pont-y-Ddol (the entrance to Rhyl Beat 7 – Ddol Farm is 800 yards on the left). Cross the bridge and 100 yards further on you will see a double width iron gate on the right. Park well to the right hand side in the gateway allowing room for vehicle access. Access to the water Climb over the gate and follow the hedge to the bottom of the beat. Water Information The best pool on the beat is the Black Pool, this is in the 2nd field up from the road and it has yielded a number of double figure sea trout over the years. This is a good pool for night fly fishing but be sure to start under the trees right at the head of the pool. You can access the opposite bank via Beat 7 of the Rhyl & St. Asaph water that we have access to and the pool at the bottom of the beat fishes better from that side. Guests: No Guests, Junior or Interim Members allowed. Non-Fishing Companions: Are not permitted.

River Elwy - Kinmel Beat Two (Near Bodelwyddan)

A beat of one and a half miles of mostly double bank fishing on the Kinmel Estate. The Elwy is a spate river that generally only fishes well during the day when there is water on and that particularly applies to this beat. There are salmon, sea trout and good wild brown trout to be caught. Advice on current conditions can be obtained from Foxon’s during normal shop hours on 01745 583 583. NB. We share the water with other syndicate rods and if a pool is occupied you should inform the occupant that you wish to fish and will return in one hour. At the first island bear right and at the second island take the 3rd exit onto the B5381 towards Betws-yn-Rhos until you see a large signpost opposite the gate to Bodelwyddan Park. Turn left and immediately right and continue on the B5381 past the left turn to Llannefydd and take the next left turn at the bottom of a dip. You will shortly come to a crossroads - go straight over and down the un-made road to a gate with a red post box. Access to the water Go through this gate and down the long drive to Meifod Mill. Pass through the field gate and if the ground is soft, park on the side, but if the ground is firm, you may drive straight across the field to the Elwy and park by the footbridge. If you walk upstream from the footbridge and go to the end of the field, climb over the fence and walk straight to the Elwy through the woods, you come out at the Rock Pools at the base of the cliffs. Otherwise, cross the footbridge, turn right and follow the path through the woods for about half a mile. The path is way-marked with white paint on the trees. Bear right at the end to come to the Landslip Pool. There is a further short length of Left Hand bank accessible from Pont Meredydd at the end of Beat Three. Water Information There are some pools just downstream of the footbridge but the long straight leading to Beat One is shallow and rocky. The best pools on the beat are the Footbridge Pool (on good water) and the Landslip Pool and another spot worth trying is Bob’s Pool just below the weir about 50 metres upstream of the Landslip Pool. NB. The Landslip Pool is a good pool for night fishing but great care needs to be taken walking through the woods in the dark because of fallen trees across the path and a head torch is recommended. There are often deer in the woods and they might give you a scare as they run off. Guests: No Guests, Junior or Interim Members allowed. Non-Fishing Companions: Are not permitted.

River Elwy - Kinmel Beat Three (Near Bodelwyddan)

A beat of one and a half miles of double bank fishing on the Kinmel Estate. The Elwy is a spate river that only fishes well during the day when there is water on. There are salmon, sea trout and good wild brown trout to be caught. Advice on current conditions can be obtained from Foxon`s during normal shop hours on 01745 583 583. The Elwy gauge is located 100m above this beat.

How to get there - OS map reference SH 952 718 to 964 722 From the A55 - Leave the A55 at the St. Asaph Business Park Exit (J26). At the second island turn right on to the B5381 towards Betws-yn-Rhos until you see a large signpost opposite the gate to Bodelwyddan Park. Turn left and immediately right and continue on the B5381 past the left turn to Llannefydd and take the next left turn at the bottom of a dip. You will shortly come to a cross roads, (the entrance to Beat 2 is a lane straight ahead) take the right turn and follow the lane without turning off. For the bottom of the beat after about 2 miles take the fork on the left to Pont Meredydd Caravan Park and park on the left of the road with the farm machinery. To reach the top of the beat, ignore the left fork to Pont Meredydd and carry on to the converted chapel. Turn left and follow the road down the hill to Pont y Gwyddel. Cross the bridge, enter the field immediately on the left and park just inside the field gate on the side of the track or you can take your car down to the Sheepdip Pool and park out of the way near the bridge. A longer but easier to navigate route is to stay on the B5381 until it meets the A548. Turn left and then go about 1.25 miles before taking the third turn on the left (which is a cross roads), and follow the lane for about a mile to the first junction, turn left and then almost immediately right, by the converted chapel, and then follow down to Pont y Gwyddel. Access to the water There is parking available adjacent to most of the pools for the less active members. Water information The beat is fishable throughout its length and is good fly water. The Bridge Pool stops fish as they cannot leave the pool until there is a good height of water. The Sheepdip Pool by the cattle bridge is also good in higher water whilst the Rock Pool usually holds fish in low water conditions. Fish tend to lie under the banks throughout the beat other than in the Bridge Pool where they lie in the deep area in the middle of the pool and under the trees on the far side. NB: There has occasionally been a dangerous bull in the fields and care should be taken if cattle are in the field. If the bull is present it is recommended that cars be parked on the road without blocking the gate. Also the river is very deep in the Bridge Pool and just a couple of steps off the top of the gravel beach might be beyond chest wader depth, the pool often changes after winter floods and great care should be taken when wading here. Mobile phone signals can be weak or absent here. Guests: No Guests, Junior or Interim Members allowed. Non-Fishing Companions: Are not permitted.

River Dee - Bryn-y-Pys: Beat 1

This beat of the Dee fishes well in low water. There is one notable pool, Dee Bank Pool, also know as Lunt’s Pool, however the long slow water which runs alongside some steep banks towards the weir also holds fish. How to get there: OS map reference - SJ 359 420 Take the Erbistock Road from the Cross Foxes Pub at the Overton Bridge (A539). After approximately half a mile turn left onto a “no through road” to Groves Farm. (NB. If you go past some grey cottages on the right hand side you have gone too far.) Continue to the end of the lane and park on the left hand grass verge before the farm gate or the new car park just past the verge. Do not drive across any field. How to get to the water Dee Bank Pool, also know as Lunt’s Pool can be reached by a short walk through the field on the left of the drive. On the far side is a wicket gate which leads to the pool. NB. Please be aware of high voltage (11Kv) overhead power lines in the field. Water information The top of the Dee Bank Pool towards weir is suitable for shrimping/spinning. No fishing is allowed within 50 m of the weir. Catch and Release in 2013 The owner of the fishing is keen that the Dee Fisheries Association policy on returning salmon is encouraged, this policy recommends that anglers keep a maximum of two salmon from the Dee, and if this is the case, that the fish are the 2nd and 4th fish caught each season. NB. Night fishing is prohibited. Farmer - Chris Waller, The Groves Farm, Erbistock – tel: 01978 780 145 Guest: Guests, Junior & Interim Members not allowed. Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted.

Erbistock Mill is used as a holiday house and the holiday makers have been informed that the fishing is private. How to get there: OS map reference - SJ 354 422 Take the Erbistock Road from the Cross Foxes Pub at the Overton Bridge (A539). The turning to Erbistock Mill is the second on the left. (At the entrance there is a sign stating it is private property.) Continue down the stone track to Erbistock Mill and either park on the river bank or in front of the Mill. For those wishing to park on the river bank please keep the gate by the stone wall shut at all times. How to get to the water

The Causeway Pool is by the car park and you can walk along the bank to Overton Bridge. Water information

The upper half of the beat is ideal for fly fishing whereas the lower half is only suitable for spinning. The majority of the fish are taken from the middle to the top of the beat. NB. Fishing is prohibited within 50 m of the weir (a tree is marked with white paint on the opposite bank) and in front of the Cross Foxes Pub. NB. Night fishing is prohibited. River Dee - Bryn-y-Pys: Beat 4

This beat on the Bryn-y-Pys water goes from below Pigeon Cote Pool to Bangor Bridge. It is reasonable salmon, sea trout and brown trout water. Salmon fishers can fish anywhere, trout fishermen cannot fish salmon pools with marker posts. How to get there - OS map reference - SJ 365 441

To fish the left hand bank park at Ddol Farm - From the Cross Foxes Pub at Overton Bridge (A539/A528) head towards Wrexham and turn right at the Eyton Lane cross roads in to a lane marked "no through road". Just before the end of the lane drive into the Ddol Farm at the point where the road bears sharply to the left (river to right). Park in front of the traditional buildings on the right and follow the edge of the field to the river. Alternatively, cars can use the farm track at the back of the buildings. Park clear of the farm gates adjacent to the fields. In dry conditions, you may be able to get permission from the farmer to drive to the river using the well defined tracks across the fields, it is possible to drive to the river in a car but a 4x4 is safer in wet conditions.

To fish from the right hand bank of the Althrey Pool park at Althrey Hall Farm. Follow the B5069 out of Bangor-on-Dee village. The entrance to the farm is just past Bangor on Dee race course entrance on the right hand side, turn right down the Althrey Hall Farm concrete drive and park in between Althrey Hall and the traditional farm buildings. Walk through the gate towards the river the Althrey Pool is marked by marker posts.

Water information

The two main pools are: Dorlan and Althrey, they tend to be better in low water conditions and are marked with white posts. There are salmon pools in between these two main holding pools which are also worth trying, particularly if the fish are running. There are also holding pools downstream of the Althrey pool all the way to Bangor on Dee bridge (opposite the race course) where fish can be found occasionally.

Most fish come from Dorlan Pool as it is deeper and holds fish longer, the taking spot is anywhere from a rods length to the other bank opposite the fishing seat.

It is possible to drive to the both Dorlan and Althrey Pools but please get permission from Peter Jones (01978 780 341) of Ddol Farm first. Night Seat trout fishing is only permitted with the farmer’s permission

River Dee – Chirk This is the Club`s own beat on the Dee. There is approximately 900 yds of right hand bank fishing and is generally thought of as a high water beat (up to 1.2m). It is a classic salmon beat - perfect fly water with five good pools. The grayling fishing is good and there are the occasional sea trout and brown trout. The bottom is very rough and it is not recommended for night fishing. A wading staff and life jacket are essential aids to safe fishing on this beat. The beat fishes well in high water, particularly in September and October when there are plenty of fish running. The fish do not hang about on the beat but if you catch a fish there will normally be others; as with all running fish you need to keep in front of them to be successful. The back eddy in the Sun Pool fishes well in high water (over 700 on the gauge) as the fish get swept into it on high water it when they first arrive and will splash around until they find the way out. This back eddy can also hold lots of sea trout when the river is low. In low water the best chance is probably the Donkey Pool at the head of the beat. The map shows an island that has now been washed away, if you wade in this area please note there is deep water at the edge of where the island was, wade carefully! How to get there OS map reference SJ 296 416 to 292 409 From Chester A483 - Take the A539 in the direction of Llangollen. Turn left at the third island on to the B5605 in the direction of Newbridge. Cross the Dee and go uphill to the landfill site on your left. 200 yards pass the landfill site you will come to Ty-Maen Farm on your left. Drive through the wooden gate on the left (not into the farm), please note this a very tight turn. If you are coming from Newbridge, drive past the farm entrance and turn right into the campsite, you can turn around safely to make access easy. The metal gate is locked (not a club lock) the key will be hanging on the fence to the left of the metal gates. This gate must be locked at all times please ensure the key is returned to where you found it before driving to the river. Follow the track observing the speed limit of 5mph and park by the gate at the bottom (on left) where there is sufficient space for 3 cars, please park sensibly (facing the river). Please note the farmer uses the corral at the entrance for treating sheep if the farmer is using this facility when you arrive either park in the farm (on the grass next to the caravan) or in the campsite field and walk. If on your return from the river the farmer has his sheep in the corral you will have to wait until he has returned the sheep to the field to exit. There have been problems with an aggressive bull in the past few seasons and a fence has been erected along the top of the bank to protect members. Please report any incidents, particularly any breach of the fence, to a Committee Member. NB. The notices on the gates and styles denying access do not apply to Club Members. River Dee – Junction Pool, Corwen

Sundays: 2 Day Rods, 2 Night Rods Thursdays: 1 Rod

This is a new fishery for 2015 and comprises the junction of the River Alwen with the Dee on the Rhug Estate. We have both available rods for each Sunday and one of the two Thursday rods, Stephen Daley has the other. This is a good beat for migratory fish and yields good numbers of salmon and sea trout each season. There is good fly water and spinning or worming is permitted in certain water conditions.

We have split the booking of the beat on Sundays only into two salmon day rods and two night sea trout rods to allow maximum use of the water. On Thursdays rods may fish at any time of the day. Salmon are usually in the beat from May and sea trout tend to arrive in early July and night fishing is worthwhile in July and August in low water conditions.

On Sundays day rods should vacate the water by 6pm to allow the pools to settle for night sea trout fishing that can continue to dawn the following day.

How to get there – OS Map Reference SJ 061425 to 065427

The access for the beat is to approach the traffic lights just to the west of Corwen bridge, if coming from Corwen on the A5 turn left at the lights, if coming on the A494 go straight across the traffic lights into the lane signposted as a No Through Road. Take the lane until approx 50 m from the farm (Glanalwen) and take a right turn. Follow the lane until you are parallel to the Alwen until you reach a gate. Through the gate, you are now in a field. Keep to the right following the Alwen down until you reach the Dee. Make a left following the bank of the Dee to the hut. Do not cross the field as it is full of undulations.

If there are cattle in the field please park in the corral by the hut. The combination for the hut is 1828. Make sure you switch off the electricity before you leave.

Catches of salmon and sea trout for the beat are recorded in a logbook kept in the drawer near the door. There is a pad to record comments/observation plus any trout/grayling caught. Please remember to record your catches on WFGC Website as well. The fishing is single left bank of the Alwen and then both banks for the six Dee pools that are as follows (upper to lower): Upper Junction (where the Alwen meets the Dee) Lower Junction

Run into Charlie’s

Charlie’s

Run out of Charlie’s

Llangar There is a mixture of pools that will fish better in higher water and those where the wading is easier. Spinning and worming are allowed when the water is higher than the red marks on the

prominent rock by the water's edge in Charlie’s. No shrimping/prawning allowed.

River Clwyd – Llanerch How To Get There Grid Reference: SJ 059 720 From the A55 leave at junction 28, as if going to Rhewl Farm, do not turn into the lane but continue past the Farmers Arms pub to the T-junction and turn right. Llanerch bridge is about 300 metres ahead at the bottom of the hill. Park only on the verge opposite the lodge and gates, parking is limited here, three or four cars at most. Do not block access and gates on the other side of the road. The top pool at Llanerch Bridge has disabled access via a combination locked gate for which a code can be obtained from the DCAC secretary. The fishing is on the right bank and continues downstream to the footbridge at point C on the map. The left bank has not been fished for some years, has poor access to the top pools and only extends to the footbridge however it is now let to Rhyl & St Asaph AA so please show courtesy to any angler on the left bank. The fishing beyond the footbridge is probably still available but needs to be confirmed for 2015 so look for the end of beat signs and do not go beyond them even if the map suggests you can. This beat has a few pools where night fly fishing is possible, particularly at the extreme top and bottom of the beat and can be productive in the right conditions. It is best fished with a little water on and most pools can be fished with a spinner or bait. It will hold migratory fish from early in the run and is mostly spinning and bait fishing water apart from a couple of more open pools at the top and bottom of the beat. Don’t forget an upstream cast right up under Llanerch Bridge as salmon often lay there. Non Fishing Companions: Are permitted

River Clwyd – Greenbank and Perthewig

How To Get There Grid Reference: SJ 059 720 to SJ 710 700 The bottom of the beat is immediately upstream of the Llanerch beat on the right bank and becomes double bank one field up on the left bank and is then double bank all the way to Pont y Cambwll despite what the map indicates. To get to the top of the beat cross Llanerch bridge, turn left at the top of the hill and left again at the T-junction onto the A541. Follow the A541 out of Trefnant and, almost at the end of the long straight, turn left at the crossroads and follow for about ¾ of a mile to Pont y Cambwll bridge. There is room for one or two cars to park just over the bridge on the left opposite the entrance to Bach y Graig Farm or continue on for 400 metres to the DCAC car park in a field on the left (DCAC sign on gate) right on a sharp right hand bend, a third parking spot is in the lay-by on the right hand side of the steep hill just round the bend from the car park entrance. The first field on the right bank below Pont y Cambwll is not DCAC but the left bank is DCAC from the bridge and the fishing is double bank from the start of the 2nd field on the right bank. Access to the left bank is via a stile at the side of the bridge and access to the right bank is from the car park across the field to Hugh’s Pool. You can also carefully wade across to the left bank at the tail of Hugh’s Pool point except in high water. This is one of the best DCAC beats for night sea trout fishing being meandering and fairly open and with many good pools for fly fishing. The flow can be quite slow on many beats of the Clwyd and is the case with a few pools on this beat so the fly needs to be worked rather than just left to swing round. River Clwyd - Pontrufydd How to Get There

Grid Reference: SJ 071 700 to SJ 098 697

The bottom of the beat is at Pont y Cambwll and is a continuation of the Greenbank beat, it starts as double bank with access either side of the bridge and parking the same as for the Greenbank beat. To get to the top of the beat from Trefnant continue on the A541 towards Mold to Pont Rufydd where there is a lay-by about 150 metres past the bridge on the left. This lay-by is the only permitted parking place and is shared with Rhyl & St. Asaph AS whose Bodfari beat is on the right bank. This beat has many nice pools and is a bit more treed over than the other beats and consequently is mostly spinning or bait fishing water but several pools are open enough to fly fish and this is a popular night fishing beat. This and Greenbanks are good beats for an early sea trout and there will often be fish here by mid-May and of course the early fish are often large fish. DCAC have the left bank continuously down to Pont y Cambwll but the right bank is Rhyl & St. Asaph (Bodfari beat) for most of the distance between the two bridges however the last couple of fields are DCAC and available but the Rhyl bank is also available to WGFC members on a separate booking. Apart from the pool with the shelter on it below the old railway bridge at the top of the beat, most of the pools fish better from the left bank. A feature of the beat is the “Burma Steps”, a steep set of steps cut into the hill and to get to the top of the beat from the bottom it is necessary to climb the steps, the less fit anglers wishing to fish the top of the beat are advised to start at the top. As well as salmon, sea trout and wild brown trout the occasional rainbow trout pops up on this beat as there are commercial fisheries up the catchment that lose fish into the river. If there is a combination lock on the gate the code is 4313 and the gate must be closed and locked unless passing through it please. DCAC has the fishing both upstream and downstream of the bridge and the Glan y Wern beat is downstream, the beat is extensive and fairly open for the Clwyd allowing fly fishing in most pools. To access the beat cross the road, go over the stile and do not overlook the Ystrad junction pool immediately below the road bridge. The first 30 metres of the Ystrad are also included and the beat is both banks for about ¾ mile finishing on the right bank at Pont Ashpool which is the second footbridge as you go down the beat, the left bank stops about 100 metres above Pont Ashpool, look for the end of beat markers. The fish arrive here a little later than further down but sea trout will usually be in the beat by June in most seasons. The top of the beat is quite popular as access is very easy and often gets busy after a spate but the further down the beat you go the less it will have been fished, particularly once the first footbridge is passed.

The combination for the lock on the car park gate is 4313 please ensure that the gate is locked unless passing through it. It is however completely different in character to the beat downstream and is probably the point where the Clwyd becomes a small river. The sea trout and salmon tend to hold in the beat under the cover of the trees but can be got at with a floating Rapala with careful casting and allowed to float down under the trees. There are pools that can be fly fished at night but much of the beat is very difficult to night fish and the angler can get frustrated by hearing large sea trout crashing out of the water under the trees and bushes. There is good fishing for wild brown trout on this beat and it tends to be lightly fished. The fishing is on the right bank only until the Clywedog junction pool after which it is both banks for a couple of fields and then right bank only again all the way to the next road bridge at Pont Clwyd (check the map) where there is parking adjacent to the bridge. The Rhyl & St, Asaph Beat 16 (Pont Clwyd) is on the left hand bank here. The Clywedog, a major Clwyd tributary and one of the principle salmon spawning areas, enters on this beat and the junction pool often holds fish waiting for enough water to run the Clywedog so always worth a cast or two. The beat includes both banks of the Clywedog right up to the first road bridge (Pont Drefechan) near Llanrhaedr where there is also parking. Non Fishing Companions: Are permitted

Bodelwyddan Game Angling Club Waters

The Club has two memberships of Bodelwyddan GAC and this gives access to a range of water mostly in the Clwyd and Conwy catchments. The fishing seasons on the BGAC waters are as per the following table, subject to Environment Agency By-Laws permitting. The rods are bookable on the system and having booked members are free to go anywhere on the BGAC unless specific additional booking rules apply for any water – see notes below.

The BGAC rules apply and members should check these out carefully but an extract that covers most situations that might be different to WGFC rules are:

1. No fish under 9” (23cm) may be taken. All poor fish, including those ready to spawn and kelts,

should be carefully returned to the water.

2. All hooks must be barbless or de-barbed except when fishing on Club and associate waters. The

only exception is when fishing for salmon or sea trout outside the compulsory catch and release

periods.

3. A limit of one fish per day in total from all game waters with the exception of Tai Lake which is catch

and release only.

4. Club Members shall as an alternative and in addition to catch and release on Tai Lake may purchase

a fish ticket at a cost of £5-00 per two fish or £3-00 per one fish. The Committee may revise this cost

should market forces dictate.

5. Fishing on Tai Lake to be fly only, with the exception of a designated area for members only worm

fishing.

6. The use of Boobies with sinking/intermediate lines on all club waters is strictly prohibited.

7. Anglers may only fish with one rod, except Llyn Syberi where two rods may be used.

8. No maggots are allowed on any Club waters, with the exception of Llyn Syberi.

9. Where a fish has been caught and the hook has been swallowed and the angler has caught their

limit, the line must be cut and the fish returned, providing that the fish is not otherwise damaged.

10. Fishing on the Club river beats and Llyn Diwaunedd can be by fly, worm or spinning, subject to

Environment Agency By-Laws permitting.

Notes:

In 2015 access to Llyn Diwaunedd through the forestry is severely restricted and as a result the water has been withdrawn for the year.

Llyn Syberi is a coarse fishing lake near Bodnant in the Conwy valley and has some excellent fish in it including big eels and perch.

A message to all Members

Playing the Game by Mike Gaskell & David Owen

To those who might wish to try for a fish Some words on traditions and rules, For knowing the score helps you enjoy more Your precious days out on the pools Before you proceed a licence you`ll need, And aquaint yourself with close seasons Please don`t be a sinner with fly, bait or spinner For all the rules are made for good reasons Place a sticker on your car and carry your card Check you licence before you go If you`re without any one we`ll descend like a ton And you`re likely to get the heave ho If you get to the river and find that another Is already fishing a team The unbending rule for fishing a pool Is never go in downstream When arriving together with spinning and feather The spinner`s the one who should wait Because - don`t ask why - those who fish fly Are suppose to go down before bait Whilst fishing alone you may stand like a stone And cast to one part of a pool But when others appear, then two paces clear Between casts is the accepted rule On single bank beats make sure that your feet Always point at the opposite beach For it`s considered a flaw to face your own shore And as rules go a definite breach On catching a fish, if you see it`s not fresh Or foul hooked or a kelt or a parr Or perhaps you`ve caught lots, quite enough for the pot Set it free, let it go on its way When out in boat- trout fishing afloat Don`t cross another boat`s drift And at all times steer wide of rods on the side For if you don`t they`ll feel very miffed

Good manners we are told are worth more than gold And should always be to the fore They help smooth the way to the halcyon day And gain others respect, what is more In country or town it causes a frown If refuse is everywhere thrown Please don`t be a lout, help stamp litter out Pick it up, to bin it later at home Lastly, don`t feel that you must fill your creel Every time that you fish lake or stream For wonder abounds in the would all around Feast your eyes and you will see what we mean

Safety is defined as the absence of unacceptable risk. Nothing we do is without risk and what we need to do is to manage the risks to achieve an acceptable level of safety. Most of the time we do it subconsciously – it could be called applied common sense. What has been attempted here is to review the hazards that we might face when fishing. Consider the harm that can arise from these hazards. Assess the risks arising from these hazards. Give some examples of precautions that show how we can manage or mitigate these risks. Wirral Game FC constantly reviews hazards and takes action where required to ensure the safety of members but cannot be held responsible for any injury or damage to property or the person sustained whilst fishing. Frequent reference is made to mobile phones and these can be a significant safety aid but should be kept fully charged, have key numbers in the memory, including an “ICE” number (in case of emergencies) and the numbers of the farmers on the beats you may fish. Keep phones dry and be aware that some Club waters do not have a signal from any network. NB: This list is neither a complete list of the risks faced when fishing nor is it a substitute for applying common sense to these risks and applying your experience to control the risks.

Water – River or Bank Fishing

Harm Death by drowning or severe exposure

Hazardous Situation

Wading in rivers and stillwaters.

Risks Every time the water is entered

Precautions Wear a buoyancy aid at all times. An auto-inflating model is best. Use a wading staff attached to your person, especially in rocky or deep water. Move carefully in strong flows and have the right soles for the bottom in question. Beware of sudden drop-offs in stillwaters. Check the water for holes and hazards before wading, and if night fishing is intended check the beat in daylight. Check the pools again each season and after floods as they can change dramatically. If fishing alone carry a whistle and advise someone of where you are going and expected return time. Carry a mobile phone with the farmers’ number(s) in the memory. Make them the first point of contact, then 999. Know the OS Grid Reference for your fishing location to guide rescue services. They’re in the handbook on each beat page.

Water - Boats Harm Death by drowning or severe

exposure

Hazardous Situation

Falling overboard or slipping on the jetty.

Risks Every time you are in or near a boat

Precautions Wear a buoyancy aid at all times. Auto-inflating model is best. Check boat for oars, baler, footrest, rowlocks and petrol for the engine. Take a troublesome engine ashore to deal with. Don’t use thwart boards in a big wave and don’t stand up unless essential. If with a boat partner don’t stand at the same time. Avoid motoring across a big wave even if it means a longer ride back. If in doubt beach the boat and walk back. Stow drogues before starting engines, keep lines clear of the propeller whilst fishing. Use non-slip footwear but not waders, carry a mobile phone with the lodge number in memory. Avoid sudden turns whilst motoring. A raised oar is the recognised distress signal – wait for help.

Slips, Trips and Falls Harm Chronic or acute injuries, broken

bones, disability or even death.

Hazardous Situations

Every occasion whilst fishing.

Risks High, especially when wet or muddy.

Precautions Choose suitable footwear. Use a wading staff for balance, especially on rocks or crossing stiles. Try not to fish alone and carry a whistle.

Alcohol and Tiredness Harm Increases exposure to all risks

Hazardous Situations

Reduces perception of risks and slows reactions.

Risks Drinking whilst fishing or fishing for long periods without rest.

Precautions Don’t drink alcohol or fish for long periods but if alcohol is taken boat handling is similar to driving. Take care if driving home when tired, drink coffee and/or have a rest before leaving.

Cuts Harm From infection to amputations

and possible death

Hazardous Situations

Any use of knives in fishing or cleaning/preparing fish

Risks Any use of a knife can result In cuts.

Precautions Use a sharp knife and protective glove for fish preparation and snips or round nose scissors for fishing situations

Flying Objects Harm Cuts and permanent disability

Hazardous Situations

Casting, particularly in a high wind, including boat partners and bystanders. Freeing snagged tackle, freed tackle might fly out at high velocity.

Risks Every occasion whilst fishing

Precautions Wear glasses and head gear at all times. Use barbless hooks where possible. If pierced by a hook go immediately to hospital do not try to remove at the waterside. If pulling on a snagged line, avert the eyes and turn the body away to reduce risk. Carry a First Aid kit.

Electricity Harm Death or severe burns

Hazardous Situation

In a boat or open space in a thunderstorm when holding a fishing rod.

Hazardous Situation

Going near an overhead cable with a long carbon rod

Risks Very high if fishing in a thunder storm or near overhead cables. Remember you do not have to touch the cable – HV electricity can arc through the air

Precautions Don’t fish in a thunderstorm – lay rods down, then if in a boat, head for shore. Don’t fish under cables and carry your rod horizontally between pools.

Livestock - Animals Harm Bites, lacerations, broken bones

or death.

Hazardous Situation

Fishing near livestock, farm dogs and large wild animals.

Risks High where there is a bull or female animals with young. Bullocks/heifers, llamas, pigs, goats, dogs or horses can also represent a threat. Deer- Low but present in October when deer are rutting and males lose some fear of man.

Precautions Treat all bulls with extreme caution. Assess danger before entering a field with livestock in it. Establish escape routes, including via the river, should they become necessary. Consider not fishing if uncomfortable with the situation.

Wirral Game Fishing

REV D Feb 2010 - 97 -

Working Parties Harm Cuts, crushing, strains,

drowning, amputations or death

Hazardous Situations

Tree clearance, bank work, log jam clearance, erecting fences and stiles. Use of power tools and winching/pulling heavy objects.

Risks Use of any power tool, tree work and in-river work are particularly dangerous.

Precautions WP Manager should allocate work to those technically and physically qualified to do it after assessing the risks. Safety equipment, hard hats, visors, ear protectors, gloves etc., must be used. The use of chain saws, ropes, winches and all cutters should be supervised and co-ordinated.

Biological Hazards Harm Sickness, diarrhoea leading to

disability and death.

Hazardous Situations

Every occasion whilst fishing or cleaning/preparing fish.

Risks Weil’s Disease - high, especially when rats are present. E. Coli – medium to low unless in direct contact with cattle, sheep or deer faeces. Salmonella/Listeria - High where fish are prepared or cleaned.

Precautions Keep open lesions covered by a waterproof dressing. Avoid contact with animal faeces and wash hands before eating if in any doubt. Segregate fish preparation equipment from other food preparation equipment. If feeling unwell (especially flu like symptoms or diarrhoea) after a fishing trip or handling raw fish seek immediate medical attention and tell them that you have recently been fishing.
