2.2 Product Description

The Cable Matters Nano N-150 USB Adapter is the perfect choice for replacing a failed wireless card or adding wireless capability to a computer. Fast data transfer with wireless speeds up to 150 Mbps at 1T1R. It operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Model 202039 also has a detachable antenna for an extended connection range.

3. Connection and Operating Instructions

3.1 Quick Start Instructions for Windows 8 and 8.1

1. Disable any wireless cards or adapters that are active on your computer.

2. Plug in the Nano Adapter to an available USB port. Your computer should recognize the adapter and install any necessary drivers. The blue LED should blink.

3. Click on the wireless icon in the Windows Taskbar

4. Look for the adapter name Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 2. It can be changed later. 5. Enter the router security password or press the WPS button on the router and press ‘Next’. 6. The Adapter should be connected.

If the adapter does not connect immediately, check in the Windows Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Click on ‘Troubleshoot problems’ and follow the instructions.

If the adapter still does not connect: Check Troubleshooting in Section 4.

3.2 Installation with Windows

3.2.1 Installation Checklist

For computers without a CD Drive, the CD contents can be copied to a USB flash drive or downloaded from www.cablematters.com/downloads.

Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users should install the Ralink software BEFORE plugging in the Wireless USB adapter.

Install the Ralink utility (in addition to the Ralink driver) to configure the adapter for Windows XP, Vista and 7 users. The utility provides additional configuration options

for security encryption that the Microsoft Zero Configuration Tool does not provide.

Close all unnecessary programs and temporarily close your anti-virus software if it prevents the Ralink software installation.

Do not connect the Nano USB Adapter through a USB hub.

Verify that the USB port on the computers is functioning and will transfer at a minimum USB 2.0 rate.

Administrator access on your computer is required to install the software.

You will need the SSID (network) name, type of encryption required and the security password in order to configure the adapter.

Disable any other wireless access to your computer before connecting the adapter.

3.2.2 Ralink Software Installation (Windows)

1. Start the installation of the Ralink software from the included CD or downloaded application.

2. Do not plug in the adapter until the software has finished installing. 3. The installation screens may vary between different versions of Windows.

4. Accept the terms of the licensing agreement. 5. Install BOTH the driver and the Utility for the most functionality.

If you receive a Windows Security warning, click ‘Install to allow the software

installation from Ralink and Mediatek.

6. Select the Ralink Configuration Tool.

The Microsoft Zero Configuration Tool does not provide configuration for all encryption protocols in XP or Vista.

Once the installation has finished, you

may need to reboot your computer.

Note: Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users will need the Ralink driver to use the adapter. Depending on your version of Windows and the security required, you can use the embedded Windows Zero Configuration software in the Control Panel > Network and Sharing.

3.2.3 Wireless Configuration for Windows XP and Vista

1. Plug the adapter into to a USB port. Your computer should recognize the adapter and

launch the ‘Found New Hardware Wizard’. 2. Click ‘No, not this time’.

3. Click ‘Install the software automatically’ 4. Click ‘Finish’

5. Choose ‘Launch Config Utility’ from the taskbar on the lower right screen (Not Zero Configuration from Windows) to start the Ralink Utility.

If you network does not appear on the

SSID list, click the hourglass to view the available networks.

6. Highlight your network name and click on the wireless icon. Follow the instructions to verify the security settings and enter your password.

Disable all other internal wireless

Use the green arrows to go forwards or backwards through the menus.

Create a PROFILE for this network if you want your computer to automatically connect the adapter on start-up. 1. Click on the Profile button.

2. Click on the ‘+’ to add a new profile.

3. Enter the Profile Name and SSID’ and click the green forward arrow.

4. Select the Authentication and Encryption for your router and click the arrow.

5. Check the ‘Use Pre-logon Connection’ to remember this profile when your computer starts. You may need to restart your computer.

The Ralink Utility will display the details of your network.

Click on the ‘?’ for the

off-line Help menu.

3.2.4 Wireless Configuration for Windows 7

1. Plug the adapter into a USB Port Note: If the drive does not install successfully, use the installation instructions for Windows XP/Vista in Section 3.2.3. 2. Click the wireless icon on the taskbar to view the available networks. 3. Select your network and enter your password.

If you cannot find your wireless network, go to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Change adapter settings. ‘802.11n Wireless Adapter’ or ‘Wireless Connection 2’.

If you still cannot connect the adapter, check Section 3.4 Troubleshooting.

3.2.5 Uninstalling the Software (Windows)

The software can be uninstalled in order to remove it permanently or to reinstall it again with or without the Ralink Utility. Windows XP: Click ‘Start’, click ‘Control Panel’, and then double-click ‘Add or

Remove Programs’. Windows Vista/7. Click ‘Start’, click ‘Control Panel’, click ‘Programs’, and then

click ‘Programs and Features’. Select the Ralink program and click ‘Uninstall’. Windows 8/8.1. Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and

Features > Uninstall or change a program. Click the Ralink software and select ‘Uninstall’.

The software can also be uninstalled by

clicking on the Desktop Icon and following the instructions.

3.3 Mac Installation Model 202038

Note: This software drivers for chipset RT5370 support Mac OS 10.6, 10.7, 10.8.

1. Install the Ralink software from the included CD. For computers without a CD Drive, copy the CD contents to a USB flash drive or download from:

www.cablematters.com/downloads

2. Install the Ralink 2870 driver.

3. Follow the Installer instructions and enter your User Name and Password. 4. Restart your computer when prompted. Don’t plug in the adapter yet.

5. After the computer has started, turn off any wireless and look for the Ralink wireless utility.

6. Plug in the adapter and the wireless utility should launch. It can also be launched from the wireless menu. 7. ‘Rescan for your network or ‘Add Profile’ to add a new network. 8. Select your security encryption and password. Your adapter should be connected.

4. Troubleshooting and Resources

4.1 Troubleshooting

Contact [email protected] with any questions. Check the Installation Checklist in Section 3.2.1. My computer cannot read the CD:

Click on My Computer/My PC and look for the CD Drive (D: or other). Double-click on the drive and then double-click on the .exe file to start the installer program.

My computer does not recognize the adapter:

Install the Ralink software first.

Check that both LED’s are lit. Try another USB port. Do not use with a USB hub.

Check that the USB ports are functioning by plugging in another USB device.

Check in Control Panel > Device Manager to see if the computer recognizes the driver and try to update the drivers.

Make sure that you have downloaded the Ralink

software and the latest drivers from Windows.

Check that the computer port supports USB 2.0 since USB 1.1 will affect the wireless transfer speed and limit the options for security settings. A USB wireless mouse or keyboard may interfere. Try to use a non-adjacent USB port. Plug & Re-Plug the adapter. Reboot the computer. Don’t block adapter Check router power saving settings. Try to change the router channel.

The connection speed is only 54 Mbps:

Check that are connected to an 802.11n (not b or g) router. Make sure that nothing is blocking the internal antenna. Check for nearby interference from a wireless mouse or keyboard or a 2.4 GHz phone.

4.1 Glossary of Terms Wi-Fi – Wireless Fidelity, a generic label that refers to wireless networks

Hotspot – A wireless access point that provides public wireless service

Throughput – The amount of data transmitted in a set amount of time.

WPS – Wi-Fi Protected Setup push button network configuration

Bandwidth – The amount of data transferred between devices in a second.

Chipset – Microchips that execute various functions (like memory) to support the CPU.

Tx Power – The transmit power.

1T1R - Streaming channel. 1T1R means one transmitter and one receiver.
