Introduction

About the CradlePoint Wireless-N PCI Adapter

Congratulations on purchasing the CradlePoint Wireless-N PCI Adapter! With the Adapter, you can enjoy wireless mobility within almost any wireless networking environment. The following lists the main features of your Adapter:

This manual provides information for setting up and configuring the Adapter. It also provides information regarding the extended features of the Adapter. This manual is intended for both home users and professionals. It is not required to read some of the more technical information in this manual (such as in “Wireless LAN Networking”) to operate and enjoy the Adapter. It is included for your reference only.

Installation and Setup

Installing and setting up your CradlePoint Wireless-N PCI Adapter is easy and includes these simple steps:

1. Install CradlePoint Wireless Software 2. Install the Wireless-N Adapter into your desktop PC 3. Configure and connect your Adapter to a wireless network

It is highly recommended for you to install the software before installing the Adapter to ensure the quickest and easiest installation process.

Install CradlePoint Wireless Software

CradlePoint Wireless Software includes both the hardware drivers for the Windows operating systems and the CradlePoint Wireless Utility. Please follow these instructions to install the software:

1. Insert the Wireless-N PCI Adapter Installation CD into the CD drive.

Note: The Wireless-N PCI Adapter software is provided on a CD within the package. If you should misplace the CD, you may download the software from http://www.cradlepoint.com.

2. The InstallShield Wizard will start to prepare for installation. Click Next to continue.

Note: If the InstallShield Wizard does not automatically start, open your CD folder and double-click on the “Setup.exe” file.

3. Next, the InstallShield Wizard prompts you to select the feature option you wish to install. It is recommended you select “Utility & Driver”.

Note: Selecting “Utility & Driver” installs both the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility and the appropriate driver for the PCI Adapter and operating system. Using the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility provides more complete wireless integration and information regarding your Adapter. If you choose to install “Driver” only, the PCI Adapter driver is installed and access to the Adapter is obtained using Windows’ Wireless Network Connection utility.

4. In the Choose Destination Folder screen, you are asked to confirm the Destination

Folder for the installed software. If you would like, you may change the destination folder default to another location. Click Next.

5. The wizard is ready to install the software. Click Install to proceed.

6. As the wizard proceeds, please wait for the files to be installed. Click Finish to

complete the client utility installation.

Note: You do not need to reboot your desktop PC to finalize the installation.

Install the Wireless-N PCI Adapter

After you have installed CradlePoint Wireless Software, you may proceed with installing the Wireless-N PCI Adapter into your desktop PC. Please follow these steps to install the Adapter:

1. Turn off your computer‚ unplug the power cord and remove the computer's cover.

2. Remove the Wireless-N PCI Adapter from the shipping box and detach the wireless antennas.

3. Select an open PCI expansion slot and remove the protective metal bracket. Insert the Wireless-N PCI Adapter into the PCI slot until it is fully seated.

Note: The Adapter is not compatible with PCIe slots.

4. Secure the Adapter metal bracket with the screw from step 3. Replace the computer’s cover.

5. Reattach the three (3) wireless antennas to the Adapter.

6. Reconnect the power cord and power on the computer.

Configure and Connect to a wireless network

After the desktop PC is powered on, you are ready to connect to a wireless network. Depending on available wireless network options, you may have to set configuration settings.

Follow these instructions to connect to a wireless network: 1. Locate the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility icon in the system tray. Double click on

the icon to launch the utility.

Note: You may also launch the utility from All Programs � CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility � CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility.

2. Click on the Site Survey tab. The available access points within range of the Adapter will display.

3. Highlight the access point to which you wish to connect. Click Connect. Note: If the wireless network you select requires security, the utility will guide you through the appropriate security setup.

4. Once you are connected, click on the Link Information tab to view details about your wireless connection.

For more detailed information on wireless connection status and configuration settings, see the next chapter, “CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility”.

CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility

The CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility provides you with information regarding wireless networks within range of the Adapter. In many situations, you will simply need to select an access point. For access points enforcing security, you will also need to configure your Adapter with appropriate security settings. The following sections describe the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility features and how they are used to configure the Adapter to access wireless networks.

Starting the Utility

After the CradlePoint Wireless Software is installed, a new icon displays in the system tray. Hold your mouse pointer over the icon, and double click the icon to open the Wireless Client Utility.

Note: You may also launch the utility from All Programs � CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility � CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility. After you have started the Utility, you can now access and use any of the management functions available in the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility.

Tray Icon

The tray icon reflects the signal strength of the wireless connection. The bars are illuminated blue for each level of signal strength. For example, when the signal strength is strong, all of the bars are illuminated blue. If the signal strength is weak or not available, the bars are white.

Link Information

Click the Link Information tab to see general information about the wireless network connection status and the Adapter operating information.

Note: If the Link Information fields are blank, a wireless connection has not yet been established. Click on Site Survey to search for and connect to a wireless access point.

The following table describes the items found on the Link Information screen.

Wireless Network Status

Profile Name The name of the current selected configuration profile. Set up the Profile Name via the Profile tab.

SSID Displays the wireless network name. If connected to an access point, this displays the name of the access point.

Link Status Shows whether the Adapter is connected to the wireless network.

Network Type The type of network the Adapter is connected to. The options are:

Infrastructure (access point) Ad Hoc

Wireless Mode Displays the wireless mode: 802.11n, 802.11g or 802.11b

Link Speed Displays the current transmit rate in Mbps.

BSSID Displays the MAC address of the access point to which the wireless card is associated.

Signal Strength Shows the strength of wireless signal between the Adapter and the access point.

Channel

Control Channel Channel number of the control 20MHz channel.

Extension Channel To locate the 40MHz channel in combination with the control channel.

Channel Width 20MHz only or 40/20MHz channel support.

Security Status

Security Shows the security type – Disabled, WEP, WPA, WPA2, WAP-PSK, WAP2-PSK and 802.1X

Authentication Displays the authentication mode.

TCP/IP Status

IP Address Displays the computer's IP address.

Subnet Mask Displays subnet mask.

Gateway Displays gateway address.

Site Survey Click the Site Survey tab to see available infrastructure and ad hoc wireless networks within range of the Adapter.

To select a wireless network, click on the appropriate row representing the wireless network to which you want to connect. After you have highlighted a wireless network, click Connect. On this screen, click Refresh to refresh the list at any time.

Connecting to a non-secure network

If security is disabled to your chosen network, the utility will immediately launch a connection with the chosen wireless network. You may check the connection status by clicking on the Link Information tab.

Connecting to a secured network

If security is enabled for your selection, you will be guided through the appropriate security setup screens based on the security type. It may be necessary to contact your network administrator to obtain the security keys and information to access the network. See the Profile section for detailed information on security settings.

Connecting to a different network

You may connect to a different wireless network at any time. Simply click on the Site Survey tab and select any network in the list.

Profile For wireless networks to which you will regularly connect, it is recommended you create a profile for each network configuration. A profile allows you to setup the wireless configuration one time. It then saves the information for future reference. This is especially helpful when security settings are required. Click the Profile tab to access the profile options.

Create a new profile

You may create a new configuration profile in one of two ways:

1. Click Add to manually enter settings related to your connection. This section describes how to create a profile manually.

2. Click WPS to benefit from WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) features. See the WPS section below for details about creating a profile using WPS.

Scan Available Networks

Click the Browse button to scan for available infrastructure and ad hoc wireless networks. Click Refresh to refresh the list at any time. Highlight the network to which you want to connect. Then, click Select.

After your selection, you will see the SSID name appear in Profile Settings.

Set Network Type

To configure a profile for Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure mode, select the Network Type field on the Profile Settings.

Click Next to continue. Note: If you select Infrastructure, the Ad-Hoc Mode Settings are grayed out.

Wireless Security

Next, you are prompted for the Wireless Security type. Based on the network you selected, the utility automatically detects the security type and displays it.

To override the default security mode, select the desired security mode from the drop-down box. Then, click Next to continue.

The following table describes the various Security modes.

Security Modes

WEP This Adapter supports two WEP modes:

64 Bits

128 Bits

Both 64-Bit & 128-Bit modes support Passphrase.

WPA/WPA2 Enables the use of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).

Choosing WPA/WPA2 opens the WPA/WPA2 Security Settings screen. The options include:

TLS (Transport Layer Security) is a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) extension supporting additional authentication methods within PPP. Transport Layer Security (TLS) provides for mutual authentication, integrity-protected cipher suite negotiation, and key exchange between two endpoints.

PEAP (EAP-GTC) (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) authenticates wireless LAN clients using only server-side digital certificates by creating an encrypted SSL/TLS tunnel between

the client and the authentication server. The tunnel then protects the subsequent user authentication exchange.

PEAP (EAP-MSCHAP V2) (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) To use PEAP (EAP-MSCHAP V2) security, the server must have WPA-PEAP certificates and the server properties must already be set. Check with your network administrator for access and settings.

TTLS (Tunneled Transport Layer Security) is an EAP variant that provides mutual authentication using a certificate for server authentication, and via a secure TLS tunnel for the client.

Select the appropriate encryption value: TKIP or AES

WPA-PSK /WPA2-PSK

Enables WPA/WPA2 Passphrase security.

Fill in the WPA/WPA2 Passphrase on the Security Settings screen.

Select the appropriate encryption value: TKIP or AES

802.1x Enables 802.1x security. This option requires working with your network administrator to provide the appropriate settings.

Choosing 802.1x opens the 802.1x Security Settings screen, with the following options:

Advanced Settings

After Security Settings are configured and finished, the Advanced Settings screen displays. In most cases, the default settings are adequate for best wireless network access. For other cases, you may fine-tune your wireless configuration by adjusting the values.

Profile Review

At this point, your profile is configured and ready to be saved. Review the Profile settings to ensure the values are correct.

To save the profile and launch the connection, click Activate Now.

To save the profile but to launch the connection later, click Activate Later. If you are not satisfied with the settings, click Back to adjust the configuration. Or, click Cancel to exit and not save the Profile Settings.

Modify a profile

To modify a configuration profile, select the configuration from the Profile list and click the Edit button. The previously saved Profile settings display in each of the fields as you proceed through the Profile Settings screens. Adjust the values as needed.

Import or Export a profile

Once a profile is created, the contents of the profile may be saved to an external file. Click Export to save the configuration settings for the selected wireless network in one location. You may save the file anywhere that is accessible to other computers, such as wired networks or USB flash drive. Then, from other computers wanting access to the same wireless network, click Import to import the external file into the Utility. This allows you to quickly create pre-configured profiles on different computers, which is especially helpful when complex security settings are required for the network.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

WPS protocol is a standard to configure your Adapter to connect to a security enabled network access point. Wireless security setup can be complex. And, home users don’t always have the expertise to enable and configure secure networks. WPS is targeted toward home users to make the security process quick and easy. The Cradlepoint Wireless-N PCI Adapter supports WPS, but not all wireless network access points do. If your access point does not support WPS, you will need to configure your profile manually. See the section, Create a New Profile, above to manually create a profile. To create a profile using WPS, the Adapter must identify wireless networks that support the protocol. Click WPS to view wireless networks which support the WPS protocol.

Highlight the network to which you want to connect. You may then click either PIN or PBC (Push Button Connect), to attempt connections to the selected network.

In the PIN method, note the Pin Code that displays in the WPS Settings. You will need to enter this Pin Code manually into the configuration screen of your network access point. You will need administrator privileges on the access point to do this. Please review your access point user guide for instructions on how to enter a WPS Pin Code.

In the PBC (Push Button Connect) method, the user needs to push a button, either electronically or physically, on the access point. The method for doing this varies on different network access points. Review your access point user guide for instructions on how to press the WPS button.

Wireless LAN Networking

This chapter provides background information on wireless LAN network technology. The information in this chapter is for your reference only. Network settings and particularly security settings should only be done by an authorized network administrator.

Transmission Rate (Transfer Rate)

The Adapter provides various transmission (data) rate options. In most networking scenarios, the transmission rate is automatically managed. It allows your Adapter to operate at the maximum transmission (data) rate. When the communication quality drops below a certain level, the Adapter automatically switches to a lower transmission (data) rate. Transmission at lower data speeds is usually more reliable. However, when the communication quality improves again, the Adapter gradually increases the transmission (data) rate again until it reaches the highest available transmission rate.

Types of Wireless Networks

Wireless LAN networking works in either of the two modes: ad-hoc and infrastructure. In infrastructure mode, wireless devices communicate to a wired LAN via access points. Each access point and its wireless devices are known as a Basic Service Set (BSS). An Extended Service Set (ESS) is two or more BSSs in the same subnet. In ad-hoc mode (also known as peer-to-peer mode), wireless devices communicate with each other directly and do not use an access point. This is an Independent BSS (IBSS). To connect to a wired network within a coverage area using access points, set the Adapter operation mode to Infrastructure (BSS). To set up an independent wireless workgroup without an access point, use Ad-hoc (IBSS) mode. INFRASTRUCTURE (BSS) NETWORK

When a number of wireless stations are connected using a single access point, you have a Basic Service Set (BSS).

In the ESS diagram below, communication is done through access points, which relay data packets to other wireless stations or devices connected to the wired network. Wireless stations can then access resources, such as a printer, on the wired network.

In an ESS environment, users are able to move from one access point to another without losing the connection. When the user moves from BSS (1) to BSS (2), the Adapter automatically switches to the channel used in BSS (2).

AD-HOC (IBSS) NETWORK

Ad-hoc mode does not require an access point or a wired network. Two or more wireless stations communicate directly to each other. An ad-hoc network may sometimes be referred to as an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS). To set up an ad-hoc network, configure all the stations in ad-hoc mode. Use the same SSID and channel for each station.

Wireless LAN Security

Because wireless networks are not as secure as wired networks, it’s vital that security settings are clearly understood and applied.

Note: Do not attempt to configure or change security settings for a network without authorization and without clearly understanding the settings you are applying. With poor security settings, sensitive data you send can be seen by others.

The list below shows the possible wireless security levels on your Adapter starting with the most secure.

1. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)

2. IEEE802.1x EAP with RADIUS Server authentication

3. WEP Encryption

4. Unique ESSI

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)

WPA and WPA2 are used to secure wireless networks. WPA was created due to wireless weaknesses in WEP security. WPA was the first implementation of the new wireless standard allowing access to pre-WPA wireless networks. With further enhancements to wireless security, WPA2 supports the full implementation of the IEEE 802.11i standard but may not be compatible with older generation security networks.

EAP (Extensible Authent ication Protocol)

EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is used for authentication and utilizes dynamic WEP key exchange. EAP requires interaction with a RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) server either on the WAN or the LAN to provide authentication service for wireless stations.

DATA ENCRYPTION WITH WEP

The WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) security protocol is an encryption method designed to try to make wireless networks as secure as wired networks. WEP encryption scrambles all data packets transmitted between the Adapter and the access point or other wireless stations to keep network communications private. Both the wireless stations and the access points must use the same WEP key for data encryption and decryption. There are two ways to create WEP keys with your Adapter:

• Automatic WEP key generation based on a password phrase called a passphrase. The passphrase is case sensitive. You must use the same passphrase for all WLAN adapters with this feature in the same WLAN.

• For WLAN adapters without the passphrase feature, you can write down the four automatically generated WEP keys from the Security Settings screen of the wireless utility and enter them manually as the WEP keys in the other WLAN adapter(s).

The Adapter allows you to configure up to four WEP keys with only one key used as the default transmit key at any one time.

Maintenance

After you have installed, configured and used your Adapter, you may be required to perform software maintenance. Here are some tips for managing your software.

Upgrade the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility

You may check the CradlePoint web site, www.cradlepoint.com, to see if updated software versions are available. To perform an upgrade, follow the steps below.

1. Download the latest version of the utility from the CradlePoint web site and save the file on your computer.

2. Click on the “Setup.exe” file.

3. Restart your computer, if prompted.

4. Resume the InstallShield Wizard and proceed with the installation.

Note: Refer to Installation and Setup for the full procedure to install the software.

Uninstall the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility & Driver

You may easily remove the CradlePoint software from your computer. When following these steps, both the CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility and PCI Adapter driver will be removed. Follow the steps below to remove the CradlePoint software from your computer:

1. From the Start menu, go to All Programs � CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility � Uninstall.

2. After the InstallShield Wizard begins, click Yes to remove software from your computer. Follow the remaining instructions.

Uninstall the Driver

If you want to remove only the PCI Adapter driver from your computer, you may do so using Windows’ Device Manager. Follow the steps below to remove (or uninstall) the Adapter driver from your computer:

1. Go to Start �� Control Panel.

2. Double-click System.

3. Under Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

4. Double-click on Network Adapters.

5. Right-click on “802.11n Wireless LAN Card”, and choose Uninstall.

6. Click OK to proceed with the uninstall.

Troubleshooting

A wide variety of issues may arise when using the Adapter and CradlePoint Wireless Software. Look through the descriptions below for recommended steps for recovery.

Problem Solution

Unable to connect to wireless network access point

The most common cause is due to improperly configured security settings. Verify that the connection settings of your Adapter exactly match the settings of the network access point. If the problem persists, disable security on your access point and remove all security settings from the adapter configuration. If the Adapter is able to connect with no security enabled, the Adapter is working properly. The issue is with the security settings.

If you still cannot connect with security disabled, the problem may be with signal strength. Find your network access point in the Site Survey tab of the CradlePoint Wireless Utility. Verify the signal strength is between 75 and 100 percent. The Adapter and access point connect using radio waves. Radio waves lose strength over long distances and can be blocked by physical obstacles such as walls. If you still cannot connect with the devices physically close to each other, you may have a problem with signal interference. Radio waves are also susceptible to interference from other electronic devices such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, other network access points and more. By default, network access points randomly select the radio frequency (channel) on which they will communicate with wireless adapters. Multiple access points in the same area choosing the same frequency can cause interference problems. Start CradlePoint Wireless Client Utility and go to the Site Survey tab. The channel for each access point is listed in the site survey. You can sort the display by channel by clicking on Ch at the top of the channel column. If there are several access points using the same channel as your access point, consult your access point documentation for details on how to change the channel setting of the access point.

Wireless signal is not strong

Reposition the antennas to find better signal coverage. Placing the antennas in the shape of a ‘W’ provides the best coverage.

You may also reposition your desktop PC to find better signal coverage. Prevent locating your desktop behind thick walls or other locations with wireless signal shadows.

Glossary

Many wireless and LAN terms have been used through this User Guide. Look for entries in the glossary for specific descriptions.

AD-HOC (IBSS)

Ad-hoc mode does not require an access point or a wired network. Instead, it’s a network that transmits wireless data from computer to computer without the use of a base station (access point). Two or more wireless stations communicate directly to each other. An ad-hoc network may sometimes be referred to as an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS).

CHANNEL

A radio frequency used by a wireless device is called a channel.

EAP AUTHENTICATION

EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is an authentication protocol that runs on top of the IEEE802.1x transport mechanism in order to support multiple types of user authentication. By using EAP to interact with an EAP-compatible RADIUS server, an access point helps a wireless station and a RADIUS server perform authentication.

ENCRYPTION

Encryption is the reversible transformation of data from the original to a difficult-to-interpret format. Encryption is a mechanism for protecting confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data. It uses an encryption algorithm and one or more encryption keys.

FRAGMENTATION THRESHOLD

This is the maximum data fragment size that can be sent before the packet is fragmented into smaller packets.

IEEE 802.1X

The IEEE 802.1X standard outlines enhanced security methods for both the authentication of wireless stations and encryption key management. Authentication can be done using an external RADIUS server.

INFRASTRUCTURE (BSS)

When a number of wireless stations are connected using a single access point, you have a Basic Service Set (BSS).

ROAMING

In an infrastructure network, wireless stations are able to switch from one BSS to another as they move between the coverage areas. During this period, the wireless stations maintain uninterrupted connection to the network. This is roaming. As the wireless station moves from place to place, it is responsible for choosing the most appropriate AP depending on the signal strength, including network utilization among other factors.

SSID

The SSID (Service Set Identity) is a unique name shared among all wireless devices in a wireless network. Wireless devices must have the same SSID to communicate with each other.

TEMPORAL KEY INTEGRITY PROTOCOL (TKIP)

Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) uses 128-bit keys that are dynamically generated and distributed by the authentication server.

USER AUTHENTICATION

WPA applies IEEE 802.1X and Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) to authenticate wireless clients using an external RADIUS database. If you do not have an external RADIUS server, use WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK (WPA Pre-Shared Key) that only requires a single (identi-cal) password entered into each access point, wireless gateway and wireless client. As long as the passwords match, clients will be granted access to a WLAN.

WEP

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption scrambles all data packets transmitted between the Adapter and the access point or other wireless stations to keep network communications private. Both the wireless stations and the access points must use the same WEP key for data encryption and decryption.

WPA/WPA2 Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA2 is a subset of the IEEE 802.11i security specification draft. Key differences between WPA and WEP are user authentication and improved data encryption. WPA2 is a wireless security standard that defines stronger encryption, authentication and key management than WPA.

Appendix B - Warranties

Hardware Warranty Cradlepoint, Inc. warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship to the original purchaser (or the first purchaser in the case of an authorized reseller) for a period of 90 days from the date of shipment. This warranty is limited to a repair or replacement of the product. To obtain warranty service, the purchaser must first contact Cradlepoint, Inc. for an RMA number, then return the product to Cradlepoint, Inc. for repair or replacement. Purchaser shall prepay shipping charges for products returned to Cradlepoint, Inc. Cradlepoint, Inc. will pay for return of the products to purchaser, except that purchaser shall pay all shipping charges, duties, and taxes for products returned to Cradlepoint, Inc. from a country other than the United States. Cradlepoint, Inc. makes no other warranty of any kind with regard to this material. Cradlepoint, Inc. shall not be liable for errors contained herein or for incidental or consequential damages in connection with the furnishing, performance, or use of this material. Within thirty (30) days of receipt should the product fail for any reason other than damage due to customer negligence, purchaser has the right to return the product for a full refund of the purchase price.
