• Why do we ‘need’ wireless ?• What are we waiting for ?• Organisational Challenges• What’s happening ?

Do we really need wireless ?

• NO.• Well, maybe it can help us…..

…. do all the things that we do today…….. easier !!

• Ease of Deployment:- Flexibility / Temporary / Mobility

Available today / soon….

• Basic process sensors (P, dP, T, DI, etc)• Cross discipline (vibration, corrosion, etc)• Ex: Zone 1, 2 or none

What are we waiting for ?

• All solutions not ready yet for prime-time• Limited vendor-choice à limited solution

choice• Proprietary à Not complying to any standard

- Upgrade costs- System- Engineering effort- Business case driven

• Maturity- Products- Organisations

Challenges (SPIES)

• Power• Interference

• Standardisation

• Security

• (Process) Environment

Organisational Challenges

• New technologyNew skills

No experienceNo standards / best practices

• Cross-discipline: IT in Process Automation• Organisational ownership• Services

Base radios - Gateways – Remote I/O – Access points

Field-Devices

Sensors (w/wl) – video – Ex-HMIs – RTLS – RFID – Guest laptops

Field-connectivity (specific for application):- Wired- 802.15.4- UWB- Wi-Fi- Specials (433, 868, 900 MHz, etc)

WAD

Switch

NMS/IDS(Wireless Access Domain)

Wireless Architecture

Transparent (any combination):- Wired- WiMAX- Wi-Fi- Specials (GSM, GPRS, Satellite, etc)

So, what’s happening ?

• Slow pick-up of deployments- one step at a time with a vision of where to go

• The Standardisation Dance- WiHart & ISA100.11a à different purposes- ISA100.11a-Draft2 vote failed- àà Merge WiHart into ISA100…..

- Ease of management- Simple infrastructure (one baseradio !)- Managed Coexistence / Interoperability

- Good progress !!!!!!- Support the drive for first-time-right-quality !!
