School Garden Contest School gardens grow more than plants. Throughout the school year, incorporating garden-
based learning into the curriculum increases engagement and knowledge retention in key
subjects such as math, science, and reading. In addition, the hands-on aspect of gardening
fosters a sense of pride and empowerment, helps children work together, be more in-
volved and feel more responsibility toward their school and community.
Children who participate in school garden programs improve their knowledge of good nu-
trition, broaden their tastes in terms of food choices, and increase their consumption of
vegetables and fruits. Equally important, participating in garden programs allows children
the opportunity for regular moderate exercise in an enjoyable way.
Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that well-
implemented school garden programs promote physical activity and healthy eating. These
healthful diet and exercise practices, planted like seeds in the garden, continue to grow
into life-long habits.
School gardening programs also provide students with a vital connection to the natural
world, encouraging an appreciation of nature and a sense of environmental stewardship.
For many children, a school garden is their only opportunity to experience nature up
close. The first-hand experience of nurturing plants in the garden brings to life the impor-
tance of protecting pollinators, conserving soil and water resources, and caring for the en-
tire web of life.
Our school is participating in the carton2garden contest and we need your HELP!
Please bring your empty milk & juice carton containers so that we can use them in our
garden, we need a minimum of 100 by April 11th to create our classroom garden.
For details about the contest please follow this link http://carton2garden.com/
Sam’s New Dog Sam’s neighbors have decided to move and Sam is very sad. His best friend, after Sara of course, is Buddy, the dog from next door. Buddy is the cutest little puppy with big, funny eyes and Sam often takes Buddy for walks and they play together. This is going to change now that Buddy is moving!
Sara feels very sorry for Sam and decides that she wants to cheer him up and get him a new dog friend with funny eyes to play with – a friend just like Buddy.
Can you help her build a Buddy-look-alike with big eyes that
move? Let’s find out!

Everything’s Coming Up Green—Carrot Pump and Salty Carrots
The children will learn that • A carrot is a tap root vegetable, a root that grows down into the ground and then
swells. • Water in the ground transfers up to the stalks and leaves of the carrot by osmosis—a
kind of “pump” for plants, helping water move in. • Carrots and celery are crisp largely because of the water trapped inside them.
In April the children will start working on Bob Book 7 “Jig and Mag” and Bob Book 8 “Muff and Ruff”
• Science: Preschool children can study plants and insects, learn nutrition skills, ob-serve the effects of weather, and learn about more advanced science topics. Younger children can feel the textures of different plant leaves, help water plants, and learn a variety of basic science concepts.
• Technology: Weather and soil tools often used in gardens are a great way to dis-
cuss technology with older kids. We will discuss machines and technology used in larger gardens or in farming. For younger kids, its best to remember that technology is really anything made by humans. Garden tools and other basic items are great conversation starters for how technology is used in gardens.
• Engineering: Building and planting a garden is great engineering and design prac-
tice. This is why it's so important to involve kids as early as the planning process. They will decide where the garden would best be located, taking into consideration the amount of sunlight, proper drainage, and other important factors that affect how gardens grow.
• Art: Children can draw or paint pictures of the plants, flowers, and insects they see
in the garden, or they can make their own flower bouquet as a creative project. • Mathematics: Gardening is a great way to promote a variety of math concepts for
preschool children. Counting, size, shape, proportion, fractions, multiplication, etc. are all math topics that children can learn while gardening. Younger children can count how many tomatoes are on a vine, for example, and older kids can problem solve to figure out how much they would have to sell 20 tomatoes for to make a profit.
Gardens provide multisensory learning experiences to all age groups! During the month of April younger and older children will be designing, building and planting gardens outside of their classrooms. Here is how gardening brings Science Technology Engineering Art and Math into our classrooms:
