This week, our guest writer is Malcolm Tsang, Chair of the Winthrop Primary School Board Dear Parents and Carers Following our recent call for expressions of interest, Andrea Edmondson and Don Johnston will be joining the School Board in 2017. Andrea and Don will join Kylie Chatfield, Sean Pitt, Bernice Tan and myself as the parent representatives on the Board. Nadia Orangi will be departing at the end of this year after two stints on the Board first as a P&C representative and then as a parent representative as her youngest child will be going to high school next year. The Board thanks Nadia for her enthusiasm and commitment to bringing a community friendly focus to the work of the Board. I am very pleased to welcome Don and Andrea to the Board. Andrea and her husband Derek have children in Years 4 and 2 and they have been Winthrop Parents for almost six years. Andrea has been an active member of the P&C for the last five years including as a former Vice President and has been involved in many fundraising events. Andrea has also been the Parent Representative for her children’s classroom on a number of occasions. Amongst her many skills, Andrea is also a graphic designer and we look forward to bringing that skillset to the Board. Don and his wife Shelley have two seven year old boys at Winthrop and a two year old who will join our Kindergarten programme in the coming years. Don and his family have lived in Winthrop the last six years and have been parents here for almost as long as Andrea has. Don has a background in business consulting across Australia and internationally and is a general manager at the Water Corporation responsible for strategy and business improvement. We will put more information about Andrea and Don on our school website in the near future. In other news, I have enjoyed working with our very excellent Principal, Mark Wirtz this year and look forward to continuing this positive working relationship next year as we prepare for our second independent review of how our school is going. These reviews occur every three years and our last review in 2014 was outstanding, which is a real credit to the work and commitment of our teaching staff, school leadership and the parent community including the P&C and Board. The review covers teaching and learning outcomes, financial management, communication between the School (including the Board) and parent community, the school’s own ability to review, monitor and improve its performance etc. Renewal and succession planning is an important part of the success of our school leadership and Board, and so after being Chair for the last three years, I will be stepping down after the review is completed mid-next year. It is time for another parent to take the school forward from mid-2017 onwards and bring a different set of skills, experience and perspective to the role. It’s been an enjoyable and at times a very challenging role and I look forward to seeing how our school continues to grow and improve in the coming years. In the meantime, we have just under five more weeks until the end of the year and so I wish all families, children and staff a safe and happy holiday period. THANKYOU WINTHROP IGA

Students from C4 have been trying to think of ways of reducing the use of plastic bags. Some of us took a pledge to avoid using plastic bags for a year. We also wrote to Jack at Winthrop IGA asking if he could help. He and his daughter Jackie came to visit our class and they are introducing incentives for customers. Each time a customer on the school plan at Winthrop IGA brings their own bag to shop, they earn 30 extra points for the school.

We would like to thank Jack and Jackie for coming to our class to talk to us and for assisting us in helping the environment.

ROOTS AND SHOOTS

On Thursday, 3rd November, Winthrop PS was invited to the Perth Zoo for the unveiling of the Roots and Shoots Peace Pole. All West Australian schools that participate in the Roots and Shoots programme were invited to paint a panel to show what ‘nature’ means to them. Anna from D3 was the artist who painted the panel for Winthrop and she, along with the Roots and Shoots leaders, Ruthie and Ella, represented Winthrop at the unveiling. Dr Jane Goodall, the founder of the Roots and Shoots programme, will be coming to Perth next year and has requested that she be taken to the zoo to see this Peace Pole.

News From Around The School

2016 AUSTRALASIAN PROBLEM SOLVING MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

Congratulations are extended to all students who participated in the 2016 Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads. Thousands of schools participated in this competition from around Australia and New Zealand. The competition consists of a series of five sets of problems undertaken during terms 2 and 3. The questions are very challenging and focus the students' ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner.

This year Winthrop Primary School achieved very highly. Out of the thousands of schools that participated we

finished in 48th position overall, and second out of all schools in Western Australia.

While all students participated well and competed at their best, some did achieve at a meritorious level. Krish Mall and Brian Clarke were one of only 320 students to achieve a perfect score. Parth Maheshwari, Gabriel Raharjo, Jamie Tan, Allan Wu, Samora Wa Azaro, Julian Mo, Jeslyn Lim, Fergus Pau and Ed Wolfenden all finished in the . top 10% of all competitors. A special mention goes to Gary Wu who, while only in year 4, finished in the top 20%.

Following are a couple of examples of the questions the students had to tackle. See how you go.

A, B and C are different non-zero digits. The product of two 3-digit numbers, ABC x CBA, has the least possible value.

What is the value of that product?

A rectangular floor has an area of 500 square meters. Three rectangular pieces of carpet completely cover the floor. The three pieces of carpet are 150, 200 and 300 square meters, and they overlap in some places. There are 11O square meters of floor that are covered by exactly two pieces of carpet.

How many square meters of floor are covered by three pieces of carpet?

Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Education Act 1999 requires schools to notify parents of the schedule of Voluntary Contributions and Charges for 2017. The Winthrop Primary School Board has endorsed the schedule of Contributions and Charges for 2017. The Schedule covers four sections and will allow you to calculate all costs for 2017.

1. Voluntary Contributions: (Section 99)

The total amount of contributions parents and carers are being asked to pay has been

contained within the $60.00 maximum set in the School Education Regulation 2000. Money collected will be used to supplement school expenditure in the purchase of

resources needed in the provision of the learning program activities, examples are set out below:

Photocopying Physical Education Equipment Music Resources Library Books Art/Craft resources and consumables

English resources Science resources and consumables Mathematics resource Information and Communication Technology hardware and software

These contributions are voluntary; however, the quality of our teaching and learning program will be enhanced when every family makes a contribution to the cost of supplementing funding gained from other sources including the State and Federal Governments. The amount decided for this voluntary contribution are as under:-

Kindergarten to Year 6 $60.00 per child

2. Optional Costs Associated with an Education Program: (Section 100)

A breakdown of estimated charges for your child’s participation in expected class and school activities for 2017 is listed overleaf. Details on charges collected in previous years have assisted us in preparing the 2017 Additional Fees & Charges Schedule.

Included in this schedule is a $100 – Kindergarten to Year 6 Upfront Payment of Excursion and Incursion Expenses. The Upfront Payment has been more efficient for parents, teachers and school accounting processes. This payment assists the school in the efficient processing of excursion payments.
