Program Notes

Psallite

Sing your psalms to Christ, the only begotten Son of God, sing your psalms to the Redeemer. A small Child lies in the manger. All the blessed angels serve Him and sing to Him. Sing your psalms to Christ, the only begotten Son of God, sing your psalms to the Redeemer.

Quasi aurora

The Son of God came from her secret chamber like the dawn

Benedictus

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest

Kyrie IIa

A note about harmonic overtones: “Harmonic overtone singing has its roots in Hoomei throat singing, which is indigenous to western Mongolia and the overtone chanting of Tibetan Buddhism. Its long oral history embraces both secular and sacred traditions and allows singing in two voices simultaneously.” [Sarah Hopkins]

Amuworo ayi otu nwa

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Messe Breve: Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

Ninni la Tibix Izyed

Sleep, do not cry anymore, sleep, baby Jesus Leave the crying to us, because we are the sinners Come, come all you angels. From the heavens by the hundreds. You shall see the one who has created you, a Child in swaddling clothes.

Noël des enfants qui n’ont plus de maison (Christmas Carol for the Homeless Children)

This is the final song Debussy composed. He wrote it during World War I in response to the destruction of villages in France, Belgium, and Poland. More a political statement than a Christmas song, Debussy’s own poem depicts orphaned French children praying that the Germans will have no Christmas. Originally composed for solo voice in 1915, Debussy created a two-part chorus version in 1916.

Our houses are gone! The enemy has taken everything, even our little beds! They burned the school and the schoolmaster. They burned the church and the Lord Jesus! And the poor old man who couldn't get away! Our houses are gone! The enemy has taken everything, even our little beds! Of course, Papa has gone to war. Poor Mama died before she saw all this. What are we going to do? Christmas! Little Christmas! Don't go to their houses, never go there again. Punish them!

Avenge the children of France! The little Belgians, the little Serbs and the little Poles, too! If we've forgotten anyone, forgive us. Christmas! Christmas! Above all, no toys. Try to give us our daily bread again. Our houses are gone! The enemy has taken everything, even our little beds! They burned the school and the schoolmaster. They burned the church and the Lord Jesus! And the poor old man who couldn't get away! Christmas, listen to us. Our wooden shoes are gone, but grant victory to the children of France!

Cancion de las Tsáchilas

This indigenous community, often referred to as the Colorados, is located in the northern coastal region of Ecuador. In the face of modernization, music serves as a tool for this group to preserve their history, traditions, and culture. Tsa chilas music-making includes dance, philosophy, spirituality, cultural traditions, and community involvement with a strong connection to nature and respect for the land. By singing this piece, our ensemble is actively helping to protect and promote Tsa chila community. A portion of the proceeds from our purchase of the score has been sent to the community to assist in the preservation of their culture. Beautiful woman of the Chiguilpe community Woman, strong woman, woman who prepares the drink for the celebration Woman, who prepares “chicha” (the beverage) for the celebration You will always drink chicha, we will always toast chicha We will toast, drinking a large cup We will drink in a large cup Flash of lightning, true people, New Year
