1 Winter/Spring 2019 Forewords from the Head Dear DoCS: Ok, it's my fault that this newsletter is a bit late. Justine tried to get me in line, but life has been a tad exciting. First my schedule got derailed by a new puppy being added to the house (and there will be no comments about "drunk adopting": it was just one glass of wine at the Saving Grace fundraiser that tipped that decision point). When Justine reminded me again that the newsletter was supposed to be ready to go out, a trip to celebrate Swedish Midsummer and all those annual review visits seemed to get in the way. Then the mountains beckoned over the 4th and here we are. I loved visiting with each of you to find out what you have been doing. As always, you are a busy lot! We continue to grow, with 2 Research Assistant Professor positions recently approved. We wished Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf and Rich Redding happy retirements and the Dean decided it was time to make my phased retirement news formal. You are stuck with me as Dept Head until June 30, 2020, but after that I will continue to teach surgery and advocate for my adopted group (EAMS/Aquatic/Zoo/Wildlife). Someone needs to keep reminding the University what a treasure CMAST is! And yes, Craig, I'm working on my bad habit of referring to the "beach" instead of the "coast". We are also formally starting the NCSU Equine Program as Reedy Creek Farm comes online. Please welcome back Jori Vasgaard, who has been tasked with making CVM and CALS play nicely (anyone up for a joint barn painting session?). Practice Plan is looking a bit healthier due to your hard work this spring. A Huge THANK YOU! I hope you have some time to enjoy steamy NC this summer: the students will be back before you know it. --Lizette _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Faculty & Staff Updates New Employees Dr. Megan Burke, Assistant Clinical Professor of Equine Emergency. Forewords from the Head Dear DoCS: Ok, it's my fault that this newsletter is a bit late. Justine tried to get me in line, but life has been a tad exciting. First my schedule got derailed by a new puppy being added to the house (and there will be no comments about "drunk adopting": it was just one glass of wine at the Saving Grace fundraiser that tipped that decision point). When Justine

reminded me again that the newsletter was supposed to be ready to go out, a trip to celebrate Swedish Midsummer and all those annual review visits seemed to get in the way. Then the mountains beckoned over the 4th and here we are. I loved visiting with each of you to find out what you have been doing. As always, you are a busy lot!
