Winter Olympics 2014 Name: February 5 th to 23 rd Period: Project Background: The Olympic Games happen only once every four years. Prior to the games, athletes from the various sports train to become the best they can be in preparation for their country’s Olympic trials. Most of the Olympic trials for the U.S.A. have been broadcast on the various stations or websites available in our country. To become an Olympian, many of these athletes and their families have sacrificed an incredible amount of time and money. Athletes range in age from young teens to adults with families and their loved ones sacrifice time with them in order to allow them to train. The Olympics are a unique opportunity for the world to provide us, the audience, a glimpse into various cultures, exciting sporting events we may not usually see and stories of these individuals and their families who have sacrificed so much in their quest to become an Olympian. Win or lose, the Olympics is and always has been about the experience of being a part of the games. We may not be the athletes at the games, but we are there in spirit! Go Team USA! Project Purpose: To educate yourself about the culture, athletic events, athletes and host country of the Olympic Games and share that knowledge with others. Project Type: Group MultiMedia Project Projects Requirements: Your group must create two slides or pages for each of the following: The Olympic Village/Location of Sochi, Russia (the facilities) Opening Ceremonies 8 of the 15 Events (there are subgroups within each… choose the one or ones you wish) 3 U.S.A. Athlete Stories (background or follow their progress through the games) 2 NonU.S.A. Athlete Story (any country, any sport) Closing Ceremonies Projects Suggestion: While you may choose to divide your work in any way you wish, the following are suggested in order to give everyone an equal balance of the work. Use Power Point as your project media format – it is easy to merge the slides prior to turning in your work. Dividing the work evenly: The assignment can be easily divided by having each person take on four of the assignment parts. For example… o Person 1: The Olympic Village/On Location in Sochi, Russia (the facilities), Opening Ceremonies, 2 events. o Person 2: 2 events, 1 USA Athlete Story, 1 NonUSA Athlete Story o Person 3: 2 events, 1 USA Athlete Story, 1 NonUSA Athlete Story o Person 4: 2 events, 1 USA Athlete Story, Closing Ceremonies Project Slide/Page Content: The project is a multimedia project, so each slide or page should include 3 parts: information in written form; at least one picture; a hyperlink to a video or article that provides further information on your slide’s content

Project  Suggested  Sources:  So,  how  do  you  get  the  information  you  need  for  the  project?    Here  are  a  few…

TV/Cable  Viewing:  Check  your  local  cable  guide  for  their  schedule  of  Olympics  Coverage.  Generally,  NBC  and  its  Affiliate  Networks  have  been  awarded  the  contracts  for  broadcasting,  so  via  a  Television  that  is  where  you  would  watch.

Mobile  Apps:  There  are  various  apps  available  in  the  app  store  for  both  Apple  and  Android  Devices.  The  sochi.ru  2014  app  is  a  good  start  and  is  a  free  app.  Your  teacher  will  show  you  this  app  in  the  classroom.  Other  free  apps  in  the  iTunes  App  Store  include  2014  Team  USA  Road  to  Sochi  Sports,  NBC  Sports  Talk  Sports,  NBC  Sports  Live  Extra,  The  Everywhere  Cam  from  Visa  Entertainment.

Internet  Sources:  These  are  sources  where  you  are  sure  to  find  coverage.  There  are  other  sites  that  will  surely  carry  related  media,  just  be  careful  to  stay  away  from  individual  bloggers  or  sites  where  individual  bias  may  play  a  role  in  what  is  reported.

◊ Use  this  website  for  NBC  News  Coverage  –  both  live  stream  coverage  and  general  content…

◊ Use  this  website  for  print  media  about  individual  athletes  and  political  issues  related  to  the  games.

ESPN  has  a  site  blog  that  would  be  free  of  hearsay  and  gossip…  www.espn.go.com/Olympics/winter/2014

Project  Due  Date:  Your  group’s  project  is  due  on  Wednesday,  February  26th  by  11:59:59pm  to  Synergy.  Your  project  should  be  named  using  the  last  name  of  your  group  leader.  If  your  project  file  is  too  big  for  Synergy  to  accept,  you  may  split  it  into  2-‐3  parts  and  save  it  as  such  OR  you  may  save  it  to  a  flash  drive  and  bring  it  to  your  classroom  teacher  ON  THE  DUE  DATE.  For  that  reason,  do  not  wait  until  the  due  date  to  upload!  Check  access  to  Synergy  –  be  sure  your  account  is  in  working  condition  –  if  it  is  not,  you  MUST  see  a  librarian  to  fix  this!  Your  classroom  teacher  CANNOT  help  you  with  Synergy  access  issues.
