Business Lunch Guest SpeakerChristopher N. Smith

 Attorney at Law & Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark 

A seventh generation Georgian, Christopher Smith was born in Macon, Georgia in1964. After graduating from Warner Robins High School, he attended the University

of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He received his Bachelors of Business AdministrationDegree in 1988. Mr. Smith received his Juris Doctor Degree from the Walter F.George School of Law at Mercer University in 1991 and was admitted into thepractice of law that year.

Mr. Smith has practiced law in Georgia since 1991. He is admitted to practicebefore the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia, as wellas the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Smith maintains a practice with anemphasis on business, products liability, wrongful death, personal injury andinternational law. He regularly advises and represents European companies onissues relating to entry into the U.S. market. Said issues include formation andregistration of a company, products liability law, insurance requirements and

contract issues. He represents clients throughout the State of Georgia.

Mr. Smith is an alumnus of the Aspen Institute’s “Future Leaders Forum.” He is thefounder of the Annual Georgia European Union Summit. He has been a guestlecturer for the University of Georgia, Wesleyan College, Macon State College,Georgia College and State University and Mercer Law School. He also was afeatured speaker at the Danish American Business Forum in Copenhagen, Arhusand Odense, Denmark in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. He serves on theBoard of Directors of the Danish American Chamber of Commerce, the advisoryBoard of the World Chamber of Commerce and previously served on the Boards of several other entities. The Telegraph dubbed him “Georgia’s Ambassador;”similarly, in a feature article, Address Macon Magazine referred to Mr. Smith as “a

rising star on the international stage.”

In March, 2006, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, II appointed him Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark. His appointment was the first of its kind in the history of Macon.

In November 2006, he received the “AGEUS Outstanding Foreign Relations Award.”In September, 2007, he was awarded “The Governors International Award forIndividual Contribution to the State of Georgia.” In 2008, he received the Danish

American Community Leader of the Year Award (the first American to do so). Hehas been a frequent guest on numerous television and radio programs. In 2011, hewas one of three Honorary Consuls in the world to be quoted in the book Consular 

 Affairs and Diplomacy . A frequent lecturer, he is regularly quoted by the media andmakes guest television appearances on a variety of programs. He and his familyreside in Macon, Georgia.

 J-1 Students for Beginners – Salon BPresenter: Mark Leech, Georgia State University  This session is designed to help new advisors get the basics on J-1 studentregulations including eligibility, DS-2019’s maintenance of status, extension& employment.

The Value of Study Abroad: Working with Career Services  - Salon CPresenters: Maggie Miller, Georgia State University and Alice Ballenger,University of GeorgiaWith high unemployment, students want to know that study abroad will helplead to securing a job. This session will discuss research showing that it helpsstudents develop integral skills. We will also share methods for working withcareer services offices that you can incorporate at your home campus.

Learn the results of this qualitative study and hear

recommendations to help students adjust to university life.

The Big Picture: Advising Beyond F and J Status – Salon BPresenters: Angela Guinyard, Emory University and Terra Martin, Ogletree,Deakins, Nask, Smoke and Stewart  This session will discuss preparing students and scholars for theirimmigration futures and how to get them to start early in planning asuccessful path towards a career in the U.S.- successful use of CPT/OPT/working with employers to secure the H-1B and building a research

portfolio.

Study Abroad Round Table – Salon CPresenters: Alice Ballenger, University of Georgia and Sarah Egerer, Berry CollegeWhat are institutions throughout the state of Georgia doing in EducationAbroad? This session will facilitate conversations among Education Abroadprofessionals in a round table discussion format on topics such as diversityabroad, faculty-led programs, evaluations, curriculum integration, and re-entry programming. Come and learn from your peers!

F-1 Basics – Salon APresenters: Kati Parker, Georgia State Univ. and Tanya Grubbs, GeorgiaSouthern Univ. This introductory workshop provides participants with an opportunity to learnhow to process the most common requests made by new Designated SchoolOfficials (DSO). Participants will review their major responsibilities as an F-1Advisor and develop skills to interpret, process and research commonrequests F-1 students have during their course of study. The workshop willfocus on addressing common requests such as: issuing I-20s, maintainingstatus, travel and reentry, employment, change of status and transfers.

Hispanic and Hispanic Americans: There is a Difference – Salon BPresenters: Veronikha Salazar and Kristin Kasting, Armstrong Atlantic StateUniversity Georgia is the second highest state experiencing growth of the Hispanicpopulation in the nation. But, many people do not know there is a differencebetween Hispanic internationals and Hispanic Americans. We aim to clarify
