I*here a re no developed.winter sports areas on the Gila. A large oar t of th i s National Forest i s not accessible by car, even in summer. On the remainder of i t s high country the roads, with the exception of State Highway 130 which crosses the Black Range, a.re not ?£ept open for winter t rave l , although may of them remain, passable up to elevations where snow stops t ravel and winter snorts opportunit ies set in .
Emory Pass (elevation 3,173 feet) crossed by State Highway 130, and i t s v ic in i ty , part i c u l a r l y Iron Creek, have f a i r l y re l i ab le snow in the height of winter and receive l i g h t , casual use for scow spor ts . Bast from Kogollon the Buxsum road climbs rather rapidly into rugged timbered.country which skiers of intermediate or be t t e r a b i l i t y might enjoy exploring. The north Star road, north from the Mimbres Ranger Station, climbs onto the Continental Pivide a t an elevation of about 7,000 fee t , giving access to snow on varied topography. North of Silver City and Pinos Altos via Cherry Creek, towards Bedstone there i s again opportunity for winter exercise on natural f ie lds and slopes.
