A traditional mountain village

Key numbers : Saint Jean d’Arves

Before being a ski resort, Saint Jean d’Arves is a village, composed of about thirty hamlets and with an exceptional exposure. Saint Jean d’Arves represents a wide area - 7600 hectares - where are standing the Arves peaks (« the most beautiful trilogy of the Alps » thanks to the Englishman Coolidge, who has been its first climber). These mountains have become the emblem of our village and of the whole Maurienne valley, with these easily recognizable peaks and their pure beauty. The new buildings are some wooden chalets, well integrated in the landscape, what allows Saint Jean d’Arves to look still like a traditional mountain village. These new buildings coexist with lots of old farms, several are still in activity. Even if tourism is our most known activity, agriculture holds a central place in the village daily life. The Arves cheese dairy collects all year long the milk production of the valley countrymen to make the Beaufort cheese. Agriculture allows people to live in Saint Jean d’Arves all year long, that’s why can be found here a real traditional mountain atmosphere.
