TheprogramincludesAmordemiAlma(LoveofMySoul),atender16th-centurylovepoemsetbyZ.RandallStroope(b.1953),awidelyknownchoralconductorandcomposer;PeterGray,byCzechmigrcomposerVaclavNelhybel(1919-1996);DemoninMyViewbyJeffreyHorvath,atalentedyoungOhio-basedcomposerandphotographer;ElijahRock,oneofalargenumberofsuperbarrangementsofAfricanAmericanspiritualsbyAmericancomposerMosesHogan(1957-2003);AgnusDei,aLatinmasstextportionsetbyBarber(1910-1981),nowrecognizedasoneofAmericasbest20th-century
composers;andRachmaninoffs(1873-1943)sublimeRussianorthodoxmasssettingknownasAllNightVigil.LedbyLouisBurkotsince1981,theGleeCluboffersanever-increasingrepertoryspanningfivecenturies,andadistinguishedperformancehistoryincludingmanyofthemasterworksofchoral-orchestralliterature,fullystagedopera,operettasandmusicalswithall-studentcasts,largeandsmallacappellaworksandthecherishedsongsofDartmouthCollege.InadditiontointernationaltourstoCanada,Italy,Braziland(thispastDecember)Spain,theGleeClubregularlytoursallacrosstheUnitedStates.TheyhavereleasedfiveCDsofchoralmusicandhaveperformedtheBrahmsRequieminCarnegieHallin2000.TheirtourtoCubainDecemberof2014includedtherarelyperformedRomanceroGitanoforguitarandchorus.
Whenweperform,wearetrulyonevoiceandthatunitymakesourperformancesspecialforaudiences,saidGleeClubmemberNikhilArora16.
BurkotwastherecipientoftheDistinguishedLecturerawardatDartmouthinthespringof2000forhisworkinvocalinstructionintheDepartmentofMusic.RichardDyerofTheBostonGlobehaspraisedhisconductingasfirst-rate,capable,andstylishandOperaNewshasnotedhisconductingsparkleswithverveandsensitivitytotheneedsofsingers.UnderBurkotstutelagemanyDartmouthstudentshavecontinuedtheirmusicalstudiesatNewEnglandConservatory,BostonUniversity,IndianaUniversity,CincinnatiConservatoryandothers.HisconductingstudiesincludetheYaleSchoolofMusic,theAspenMusicFestivalandtheHoustonGrandOpera.Inaddition,heistheArtisticDirectorofOperaNorthandgivesmasterclassesinvocalrepertoireatmusicschoolsandconservatoriesthroughouttheUnitedStates.
