EMPLOYERS-ARE YOU READY FOR THE APPRENTICESHIP
LEVY?
In spring 2017 the way the government funds
apprenticeships in England is changing. Some
employers will be required to contribute to a new
apprenticeship levy, and there will be changes to
the funding for apprenticeship training for all
employers.
Learn more about the levy and how it
will affect your business.
We will support you in getting the most
from the levy.
Take advantage of the current funding
streams available NOW before the Levy
starts.
Chamber Training will be holding a series of free
information events to answer all your questions
and help you better understand how the changes
will affect your business.

Following a government consultation the Apprenticeship Levy will come into force on
6th April 2016. The information below should help you prepare for how this will affect
your organisation.
Are you a levy payer?
If your organisation has a pay bill of £3 million or more you will be a levy payer from 1st May 2017. 0.5% of
your pay bill will, via HMRC, be paid into a levy pot which you can then spend on apprenticeship training in
your organisation. Please note: There is a £15,000 allowance before the levy is applied.
Via the Digital Apprenticeship Service you will be able to view your levy funds and search for and select your
preferred supplier.
Non-levy payers
If your pay bill is less than £3 million, you will be a non-levy paying employer.
From 1st May 2017 you will be expected to contribute 10% of the maximum funding band for your chosen
qualification in cash terms. Please note, this is mandatory except for the exemption categories as detailed
below. The remaining 90% will be contributed by Skills Funding Agency and will be paid directly to your
chosen provider pending an agreement being agreed by both parties (employer and provider).
Please note – the 10% payment has to be made up front before the remaining 90% funding is released to
your provider and this has to be evidenced to Skills Funding Agency.
Like levy paying companies, non- levy payers will also be able to use the Digital Apprenticeship Service to
search for approved providers in your area, select your provider of choice and agree both financial and
delivery terms.
Exemptions
There is no cash contribution required for learners 16-18yrs. This age group will continue to be fully funded
by Skills Funding Agency and an incentive payment of £1000 is payable to both the provider and the
employer (£1000 payment each).
The SFA will also contribute 100% funding for 19-24yr old care leavers or 19-24yr olds with an education or
health care plan.
All changes relate to training for both new starts and existing staff
Further information for both levy and non- levy paying employers can be found using the following link:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apprenticeship-levy-how-it-will-work/apprenticeship-levy-how-it-will-work
Until 1st May 2017 all current funding systems remain the same so we would advise you to consider your
recruitment needs now and avoid the forthcoming changes. Chamber Training will be providing additional
support to employers between now and 1st May to ensure you make the right choices before the levy is
active. A member of staff would be happy to discuss your options in more detail, or if you would like further
information please do not hesitate to contact us.

TALENTED Chamber Training apprentice Paige Palmer trimmed
Chamber boss Ian Kelly’s greying locks recently after he visited Salon
Apprentice – Chamber Training’s hair salon on Jameson Street in the
centre of Hull.
Sporting his smart new look, Ian said: “My local barber of 20 years on
Beverley Road has just shut down so I was persuaded what better
than to check out our own team of talented hairdressing apprentices!
“Under the helpful supervision of Salon Apprentice’s Tracey
Stammers (left), young hairdresser Paige did a fabulous job,” he
enthused.
“I asked her if she could manage to cut out all my grey hairs but leave
the rest, which flummoxed her a bit – but she did a really good job!
If you would like to book an appointment at Salon Apprentice, which
is open to the general public, simply give the Salon Apprentice team a
ring on (01482) 611891.

Events—Your Future Careers (CEC Project)
As the training arm of the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Training was selected as one
of the Chambers by the Careers and Enterprise Company to be involved with the ‘Your Future Careers’
project to take part in delivering 115 Careers Fairs across 13 LEP areas in England from April 2016 until
August 2017.
The Careers Fairs project aims to provide young people with
‘encounters’ and information, motivating, inspiring and
enabling them to engage more proactively with businesses,
resulting in better ‘buy-in’ to their individual careers advice
plan.
The Careers Fairs focus on business exhibitors, which show
young people real career routes, along with workshops on e.g.
CV writing and interview techniques. They will also provide
young people with the opportunity to develop their confidence
One of our recent events held at Kelvin Hall School involved
Year 10 pupils taking part in a ‘Preparation for Work
Experience Day’
We invited a range of local training providers and employers
to exhibit and deliver a series of workshops, aimed at
developing pupils’ knowledge of the working world and
enhancing their employability and team working skills.
Pupils were also given the chance to find out more about
apprenticeship and employment opportunities from the
exhibitors.
The interactive workshops included:
Health & Safety
First Aid
Labour Market Information
How to Approach Employers
Business and Behaviour in the Workplace
Business and Customer Awareness
Problem Solving and Teamwork
Persuading and Negotiating
Communication
Kelvin Hall commented:
‘Pupil feedback from the day was
very positive and we would like to
thank all of the employers and
training providers who supported the
event’.
‘We would like to thank all of the staff at Kelvin Hall and the following employers and training providers for their hard
work and support, contributing to a very
successful day’
