Before Gloria Steinem, before Betty Friedan, there was Emma Lazarus. An American poet born in 1849, Lazarus was an outspoken writer, playwright, forerunner of the Zionist movement, champion of women’s and immigrants’ rights, teacher—and New Yorker. Privately tutored from an early age, she studied literature and poetry in French, Italian and German and corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson un-til his death. Her most famous work, “The New Colossus,” was commissioned in 1883 as a donation to an auction to help raise funds to build the pedestal for the Statue of Lib-erty. Little did Lazarus know that her words would forever be engraved on that beacon in New York Harbor. “The New
Colossus” declared that America should be a safe haven for immigrants seeking a better life.
Sadly, Lazarus returned to America in 1887 from a vaca-tion in Europe too ill to come out on deck as her ship passed the statue. She died never seeing the monument her poem helped to build. It still rings true more than 125 years later.

We’re shifting into holiday mode and the New Year is almost upon us. That calls for organizing, cleaning, planning, shopping, cooking and baking, gift wrapping, deco-
rating, entertaining—in short, bringing the holidays home. Whether it’s green, white, gold, silver or red, I like to pick a particular seasonal color when dressing up the house. A single-color palette is a simple way to tie together a festive look from room to room.
One of my favorite tricks is to incorporate edible seasonal fruits and vegetables into the monochromatic colorway. Pomegranate, with its rich red hue, is a delicious embellish-ment. This seedy fruit, sometimes referred to as the forbidden fruit of The Garden of Eden, also represents abundance, fertility and good luck in many religions and cultures.
After cracking open the pomegranate, the seeds fall out plentifully. Scoop up a spoon-ful for topping off a salad, soup, pork, fi sh, yogurt, or including in a favorite cocktail. Let’s raise a glass to that!
