Autism-Friendly Activities at Glasgow Museums

Sensory KitsThere are sensory kits available to borrow from reception at the Gallery of Modern Art, St Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art, and Riverside Museum. We are working with the autistic community to improve these kits which is why they are currently only available in three pilot venues.

Visual StoryboardsVisual storyboards give autistic visitors an idea of what to expect when coming to our venues. You can download them here:

Quiet Safe SpacesThis is a place where autistic visitors can go to find calm when they feel overwhelmed. This can help people to successfully continue their museum visit or to prepare for their journey home.

The suffragettes employed many methods to convey their message of ‘dignity, purity and hope!’ We’ll use the crockery in our collection to draw inspiration and design our own message in a pattern.

Take a look at the ceramic horses and our horses in the old street. We’re going to make our own little horse!

Hanging Fabric PostersSat 28 & Sun 29 Mar 1.30–4pm

Come along and design your own hanging fabric poster of any vehicle in our museum! We will use fabric crayons, fabric, dowels and string to create our decorative works.

DisplayGoing Green – The Drive for Efficiency A new display inspiredby James Watt, the Scottish scientist. Famous for inventing a condenser that reduced the amount of coal required to drive a steam engine, the display showcases his work in a modern-day context of energy efficiency and climate change. Central to the display is a Tesla car, Model S P85+ and a rare Honda Insight Mk1 from 2000.

It also demonstrates how we test air quality, monitor oceans and make personal statements about the environmental dangers our world faces. Going Green is sure to enthral visitors of all ages and will be an important talking piece for the younger generations.

The Gallery of Modern Art, GlasgowMuseums Resource Centre, KelvingroveArt Gallery & Museum, People’s Palace, Riverside Museum and Scotland Street School Museum are open daily: 10am–5pm, except Fridays & Sundays 11am–5pm. The Gallery of Modern Art is also open until 8pm on Thursdays. Provand’s Lordship and St MungoMuseum of Religious Life & Art havethe same opening hours except thatthey are CLOSED on Mondays.
