We introduced several new brands to our brand portfolio at the show including Primus, Power Traveller and Keysmart. Additionally we launched many new products from our current brands, many of which you will see inside this edition of Zen Quarterly.

I’ve just recently returned from the 35th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Leatherman Tool Group. Leatherman had all their international partners in Portland for three days of celebrations, meetings, new product showcases and business discussions. Later this year, in November, Tim Leatherman will be in Australia and we’ll be sure to let you know specific dates related to the events we’ll be holding. It’s an amazing achievement for Tim, who created the Multi Tool category with his invention, the Pocket Survival Tool (PST). We hope you’ll be able to join in the celebrations later this year.

We also sat down with Tim and asked him some questions for this edition of From the Sources Mouth. Pretty interesting and a great insight to the innovative pioneer.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT ZEN

After months of installing, testing an optimisation,the upgrade to Zen's warehouse operations are complete, with the receiving,

picking and dispatch of orders now entirely digital.

Already the upgrade has seen marked increases in the speed which we can process orders - all to the benefit of our customers. The warehouse area has also been increased to double its previous size to accommodate our newer brands like Fjällräven and Primus.

The 5th annual Wings for Life World Run took place on Sunday May 6th from East Hawthorn, Melbourne and once more Team Ledlenser was on hand to supply the runners with NEO headlamps, giving them the light they needed to shine the way forward. The race itself kicked off at 9:00PM , with over 2500 racers and their headlamps creating a

stream of light down the Monash freeway.

From Australia to Azerbaijan, runners and wheelchair athletes at over 200 locations in 66 countries helped spread the 2018 Wings for Life World Run to more places around the planet than ever before. The unprecedented show of global camaraderie and competition meant that over 100,000 competitors covered a massive 934,484km in the fifth running of the world's most unique race – an astonishing 23-and-a-half times the circumference of the Earth!

Before the Melbourne leg of the race got underway, The Ledlenser team entertained participants with our popular attraction from last year - the"Light Painting" booth. This interactive set up allowed visitors to "draw" through the air with Ledlenser flashlights, with their words and images captured by a camera on long exposure to be shared with friends and family on social media. A large TV set up in front of the booth showed passers by what we were doing and pretty soon there was a long line of people eager to join in on the fun!

The Wings for Life World Run is an event that we are proud to be a part of. 100% of all entry fees and donations raised through fundraising campaigns for the event go directly to life-changing spinal cord research projects and clinical trials at renowned universities and institutes worldwide. We're already looking forward to being there again in 2019.

POINT-OF-SALE (POS) DISPLAYS ARE A POWERFUL IN-STORE MARKETING TOOL. THEY DRAW CUSTOMER'S ATTENTION, BOOST BRAND AWARENESS AND HELP TO INCREASE SALES. HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS TO HELP MAXIMISE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POS DISPLAYS IN YOUR STORE...

1 LOCATION, LOCATIONPositioning of the POS display in your store is all important to their effectiveness. Placing displays in high traffic areas or close to checkout counters are proven ways to engage customer interest in the display and generate impulse purchases.

Another factor to take into consideration with display positioning is Product Synergy. If the product you're displaying compliments or enhances the usability of another in your store, then placing these items next to each other can influence the consumer to make an add-on purchase. Selling mobile phone cases? Place a Nite Ize Steelie display next to them and make the customer think about phone mounting options in their vehicle.

3 ENGAGE THE SENSESUsing a digital signage display to play commercials and product information videos for your product is a great way to both attract attention and educate the consumer on a brand.

5 LEAVE A PAPER TRAILFor higher priced or technically advanced products which may require some thought from the customer before they purchase, print brochures or tearaway flyers to place on your displays so the customer can takes the information home with them and potentially share with others. You should also consider adding promotions or discounts to the flyers to increase the chance of the customer making an immediate purchase or returning at a later date.

4 SHINE A LIGHT ON ITLike signage, appropriate lighting can shape the overall atmosphere of a display and can helps draw a shopper’s attention to particular items you want a focus on.

The three lighting techniques that are typically used in-store are Primary lighting, Accent lighting and Ambient lighting. Primary lighting is overall illumination of your store, Accent lighting draws the shopper’s focus to a specific display, while Ambient lighting tends to be more dramatic in that it plays light off shadow to create an intriguing effect.

Studies have shown that warmer lighting has a more positive effect on customers, so be careful not to set your primary lighting too dim. Accent lighting should only be used sparingly, so be thoughtful about which products you want to highlight - over-use will drown out the overall effect. For example, consider using accents on the lower levels of a shelving unit which might not naturally attract a shopper’s gaze.

When you’re carrying all your gear on a solo adventure,

lightweight gear is the obvious choice, but it’s also

important not to be blinded by the ‘light is right’ mantra

when choosing camping gear – durability should still be

your primary concern when packing for a self-contained

outing.

The Primus LiTech Trek Kettle fits this combo of durability

and light weight perfectly – and adds in enhanced versatility

when compared to some other lightweight camp pots on the

market. The hard-anodised aluminium construction (with

non-stick, scratch-resistant inner surface) ensures this small

pot (weight is 300g, height is 135mm and it has a 125mm

diameter) really does punch above its weight in regards to

performance and, as mentioned earlier, versatility.

Versatility is accounted for by the 1-litre pot’s lid, which

doubles as a small frying pan. Being able to boil water in

the main pot and also fry up an egg or slice of bacon inside

the lid itself is a classic case of a piece of equipment that has more than one purpose – ideal when you are travelling solo

as it doesn’t add unnecessary weight or bulk as the lid is included in the pot anyway.

The pot has no actual volume markings to signal a litre, but it is very easy just to watch as you pour and judge how full it is.

The fold-out handles (with insulated grips) are well affixed to the pot’s side and offer excellent support when lifting the full

pot off your stove and manoeuvring to pour out the water/rice/pasta, etc. from inside without spilling it or burning yourself.

The pot can also fit a fuel canister inside (anywhere from a 100g jobbie up to a 230g one; with a 100g canister you can

usually fit a small stove in there as well), again making packing that single pack of yours an easier process. Plus, it means

most (or all) of your cooking gear (once you add in a lighter or matches) can go inside the pot. This also means they are

better protected from accidental breakage when you’re hiking.

During testing it has worked perfectly – after all, it is just a

pot – but having that added assurance of non-stick interior

(for quick cleaning), strong handles and that nifty small

spout for additional assistance when pouring hot liquid out

into a bowl or cup, means it can be highly recommended

not only for solo adventurers but also for those who are

vehicle- or bicycle-based tourers. As a handy, compact

pot for that mid-journey cup of tea or coffee – or even a

warming soup on a winter’s day – the LiTech Trek Kettle’s

overall performance means it qualifies as that near-perfect

addition to your gear shed – a piece of equipment that

TAKE A STEP INSIDE THE BRAND

What was the most challenging part of getting the business off the ground, and what advice would you give to others just starting out? The first challenge was to develop a prototype I liked. The second challenge was to modify the prototype to something others liked, and the third challenge was to find customers. Don’t give up. Be persistent. Sweat the details. Do the work yourself. Be willing to work on a shoestring. Offer quality products.

After the first Leatherman PST tool was released, how did you go-about designing subsequent models? The first tool after the PST was just a question of should we go bigger or smaller. We went smaller. Today if you find a Mini-Tool out there, you have found a rarity. Then we went bigger. The Super Tool quickly sold in the millions. The key was to listen to customer suggestions and to have hired Ben Rivera as a manufacturing engineer, who it turned out, became the world’s best multi-tool designer. Ben is responsible for the Micra, Wave and Tread among others.

2018 marks the 35th anniversary of the Leatherman Tool Group. Looking back, did you ever expect your invention to become the globally renowned brand that it is now? Not at all. I clearly remember hoping to make and sell 4,000 tools in our first year of production, primarily to the niche markets of knife enthusiasts and survivalists.

Zen has been your official Australian Distributor for over 30 years now. Tell us how this partnership first came about and what you think the key is to such a long-standing business relationship? Zen found Leatherman and we are pleased they did. For thirty years Australia, despite its relatively small population, has consistently been among our top five export markets. We try to treat our distributors like family, and in the case of Zen, it is quite literally true that the Yates family and the Leatherman family have spent time together since the Yates children were just little tykes. Now Zen is being run by the second generation. It’s not easy for a business to transition to a second generation, but Zen has succeeded.

What makes Leatherman multi-tools different or better than similar products in the marketplace? We have been at it a while. In 35 years you learn a few things. In each tool we try to give you the most functionality, with the highest quality, in the least space, with the lowest weight. “There when needed, works when needed.” “Compact enough to carry with you all the time. Useful enough that you want to.” We still sweat the details.

After 35 years, Leatherman Tools are still made in the USA, which is a pretty impressive fact. How important is to you that Leatherman is still a “US Made” product? It’s central to who we are as a company. It’s one of my “forever” goals.

Out of all the Leatherman Tools that have been created over the last 35 years, do you have a personal favourite, and if so what makes it so special? Sentimentally, it’s my first tool, the Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool. For the last ten years my every day carry tool has been and still is today, the titanium scaled Leatherman Charge.

Leatherman tools are used by millions of people all over the globe, in many different situations. What would be some of the most 'out-there’ or ‘creative’ ways you have seen/heard of a Leatherman being used? Keeping airplanes from crashing. Freeing a fawn caught in a fence. Keeping a whale from pulling a boat under. As surgical instruments. Fixing vehicles in the third world. Saving people who fell through ice. Stopping bullets. I’m surprised with the number that come back with electrical burn marks, but the user has survived to tell the tale.

You were born and raised in Portland, Oregon and still live there today. What do you love most about your home city/state? We have the amenities of a city, but nearby there are fish to be caught and trails to be hiked – just about every type of outdoor recreation imaginable. We like to joke that if you move to Portland you will grow web feet, but the rain makes everything green. The winters are mild and the summers are dry, but not too hot and not too humid. The people are generally pretty laid back too.

As Leatherman celebrates its 35th anniversary and reflects on the path you created, what does the company look forward to in the years ahead? We expect to have some exciting new products. And although lifestyles and technology may change, our goal is to always offer tools that keep you prepared for the expected and unexpected – that are relevant “for real life,” whatever that lifestyle may be.

Losing your keys! Yes, everyone has done it (and everyone is probably nodding in agreement as they read this) and it is one of the most frustrating things that can happen. It doesn’t matter where you lose them, but it can be a more serious issue when you’re packing up the kids, the vehicle and all your gear after a weekend of camping and realise they are gone. There’s no spare set nearby as there would be at home and you may well be stranded for a longer time than envisaged – or at least until you pull everything out of the vehicle and (hopefully) find them.

The KeySmart Pro is the, er, ‘key’ to ensuring this potentially disastrous situation does not occur. Touted as “the world’s smartest key organiser” it is, after testing this unit for the past month, actually hard to argue with that claim. So how does it work and why is it so easy? Simple: by loading the free Tile app onto your smart-phone and then clicking on the “Find” tab. The KeySmart Pro emits a musical note or sound, making it very easy to find if it is nearby.

Alternatively – and more impressively – if you cannot hear the sound you needn’t despair – the Tile app also includes a map, so by selecting “View on Map” you can get a location of your keys and be safely and – thankfully for the rest of the family – be happy and on your way home. This tech also works in reverse: if you lose your phone, a double-click on the Tile button on the KeySmart Pro will activate the ring-tone on your phone.

Of course the KeySmart Pro is more than a tech toy, it’s a fully functional, well built (the outer shell is polycarbonate) key organiser; it can fit up to 10 regular-sized keys (there are expansion pieces available to lift that capacity to 50 keys if needed), held in place with stainless steel hardware, and – yes! – a bottle opener, probably one of the most essential items of camping gear. A nice feature is the built-in LED light which, while not especially powerful, is still great for finding the lock to a cabin door if you're out in the woods. There is also a loop ring at one end that is designed to attach larger car keys to, so there’s no risk of them getting tangled up with the other keys in the organiser. The unit is quite compact without being too small as to inhibit operation. Handily, the keys are stored in the organiser teeth-in, so you won’t tear your pocket lining or cut/scratch yourself when grabbing a key.

We’ve simulated ‘lost key’ scenarios since the KeySmart Pro landed in our hands and it has worked as it should each and every time. Hopefully we won’t have to do a ‘real’ test, but knowing how easy it is to lose the keys (admission: this writer is a repeat offender) when out camping, having the (cheap) assurance of the KeySmart Pro when it comes time to find them means there is one less thing to worry about and we can just focus on enjoying the outdoors.

My Signal has seen the best ones… I’ve used the Awl to make a pair of leather approach shoes. Made a makeshift toothbrush by slotting a Q-tip into the bit-driver. Tied cord around it and used it as a throwing weight to rig a hammock… I could keep going.

I spend majority of my time on-line, trying to make the on-line experience the best it can be, and working with the brand managers to create social strategies and social media advertising campaigns. I am a “Jack of all trades” and have a pretty large variety of jobs I do, but basically my phone is an extension of my arm!

Winter all the way! When it’s cold, you can always adapt and layer up as opposed to when its super-hot. I really like frosty Winter mornings, they’re aesthetically pleasing and Winter nights make snuggling up in bed with a good book that much better.
