Winter 2018 Exhibit Opening | Water in California: Issues, Impacts & Innovation The Winter Exhibit opening will showcase the intersections of water as a commodity and natural resource, through examples of research and scholarship at UCI. The opening event will feature Professor David Feldman, School of Social Ecology and Director of the Water UCI Center and Professor Stanley Grant, Samueli School of Engineering. Dance students from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts will also perform original pieces inspired by water and art from Lakeside Middle School students will be on display. Water in California is co-curated by Julia Gelfand, Applied Sciences & Engineering Librarian, and Shannon Roback, Ph.D., Assistant Director of Water UCI Center.

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang Book Club UCI Libraries and UCI Illuminations invite you to participate in exclusive book clubs before the UCI Illuminations author series presentations.

Ted Chiang was born in Port Jefferson, New York, and holds a degree in computer science. In 1989 he attended the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer’s Workshop. His fiction has won four Hugo, four Nebula, and four Locus awards, and he is the recipient of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. Stories of Your Life and Others has been translated into ten languages. Attendees are requested to have read the book before the event and will join Professor Christopher Fan, UCI School of Humanities, for discussion.

Stress Relief Study Breaks UCI Libraries offer quiet and supportive places for students to study throughout the year. And during finals week, we also provide opportunities for students to take productive study breaks! The Libraries will offer late-night snacks, post-it note therapy and fun activities such as Legos, coloring and a communal puzzle. Langson Library and the Gateway Study Center also are open 24 hours on specific days around 10th and finals week.

Paws b4 Finals UCI Libraries will host a study break event for students with pet therapy volunteers from the Orange County chapter of Paws 4 Healing. Trained therapy animals will provide hardworking students with an opportunity to reduce their stress in the last week of the quarter before finals. Library staff will also be available to provide information about the resources and services that we offer to help students succeed. The event will take place in Gateway Plaza in front of Langson Library.

Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Book Club The UCI Libraries and UCI Illuminations invite you to participate in exclusive book clubs before the UCI Illuminations author series presentations.

Colson Whitehead was born in 1969, and was raised in Manhattan. His books have received many accolades starting with his first book The Intuitionist. His most recent book, The Underground Railroad, published summer 2016, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the Carnegie Medal for Fiction. The Underground Railroad was a New York Times Bestseller. Attendees are requested to have read the book before the event and will join Professor Michael Szalay, UCI School of Humanities, for discussion.
