Get involved with local arts this Winter!After a brief hibernation, the Winter Arts Festival is back to keep you creatively inspired with a month of performances, events, workshops, film screenings and digital stories. The Winter Arts Festival is created with the community at its heart. Every offering in the program is by the community, for the community or with the intent to build new connections and shine a light on the incredibly vibrant municipality, rich with arts and culture that is the City of Casey.

Museum of the Moon at Bunjil Place

Visit the Bunjil Place Plaza this winter for an up-close encounter of a giant replica of the Earth’s Moon by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. Read on to discover more exciting Museum of the Moon activities across Bunjil Place.

The Launch PartyYou’re invited to the hottest party this winter – the launch of Luke Jerram’s giant replica of the Moon in the Bunjil Place Plaza. Moon Dust An augmented reality interactive installation

Take a step away from earth and transcend yourself to the virtual world of Moon Dust! Moon Dust is an augmented reality installation on the Bunjil Place Outdoor Screen in which the audience is live transformed into pixel particle systems in the virtual infinite universe.

Indian Folk-ArtYoge runs a workshop that will give participants a hands-on experience with Indian folk-art techniques, colour theory and will provide an insight on how to create vibrant art pieces. Yoge uses story telling through her paintings to share her Indian culture with the broader community.

Community Art Pop Up Facilitated by Tina Strafford of Artatak, this art project is a chance to share your own personal creativity and reflect upon what family and community means to you. Each participant will create a large feather using recycled materials, that will form part of a larger piece of work and displayed in Selandra’s gallery space and launched at the Winter Arts Soiree.

Casey Aboriginal Gathering Place digital story The Gathering Place give their young Indigenous people a voice through spoken word and imagery, exploring the 2021 Naidoc Week Theme – Heal Country. Filmed at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens this work tells a story of connection to Country and the importance of looking after the land traditionally in order to begin healing.

The Heal Country digital story will feature at the Littlefoot and Company’s Spoken Word Night at The Studio, Bunjil Place on Thursday 24 June.

jiě - Sisterhood: Between Responsibility and Love Zine Launch

Jess Nikitina-Li’s zine is centred on the experiences and feelings of sisterhood. It documents the role and relationships of sisters from Asian backgrounds, attempting to speak of the highs and lows inherent in our culture, youth, memories, and family. The launch event will provide space for all kinds of sisters to gather and share – an opportunity to get a physical copy, watch live interviews, and listen to music from our sisters. Presented by Jess Nikitina-Li in collaboration with Bunjil Place and Emerging Writers Festival.

Pachamama is my main muse. My works will almost always depict a female figure. I am drawn to her vulnerability, strength, beauty and despair. The vivid colours and larger than life brush-strokes show her many faces and the living miracle to which we all share.

A zine and photo series centred on the experiences and feelings of sisterhood. The tradition of cultural exchange between Council and other cities has long involved gift giving. This selection of gifts from the Civic Memorabilia Collection looks at the design in gifts and what they say about place, diplomacy and cultural relationships.

The Casey Art Spaces program is excited to showcase works by young local artists, which have been created as part of their Visual Arts studies at Cranbourne East Secondary College. Themes of this impressive collection include an investigation into impressionism, exploration of portraiture and hybrid Australian creature drawings.

Berwick Artists Society was formed in 1992 to provide a space where local emerging, professional and hobby artists could network, develop their skills and contribute to art within the community.

Berwick District Woodworkers Club Inc. Woodworking Exhibition

Launch on Friday 9 July, 5.00 pm – 8.00 pm Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 July, 9.00 am – 5.00 pm BDWWC Clubrooms and Workshop at The Old Cheese Factory

Based in Berwick, just south east of Melbourne, the club is best known for their generous output of wooden toys around Christmas every year. However, the skills and talents of this 100+ group go way beyond toy making, and this exhibition will feature a wide range of woodworking items, some of which will also be available for sale. There will be demonstrations throughout the exhibition of turning, carving, rocking horse making, scroll sawing, toy making, and pyrography, plus a kid’s activity corner.

WOT x CAS Artist in ResidenceWay Over There and Connection Art Space have created this program which activates and rejuvenates both physical and virtual spaces within the South East. This program is created and run by diverse community members, for our diverse Casey community. This Artist in Residence initiative reinforces an energetic and socially cohesive and healthy atmosphere, and helps build a strong and accessible, arts and cultural scene for our locality.

Session 1, 11.00 am – 1.00 pm: Marketing and Social Media for Artists

Designed to teach you the tools to develop a marketing strategy, harness social media platforms and grow your brand. Hashtagging, clear messaging, honest storytelling, good images and the behind-the-scenes analytics of lnstagram are powerful but often underutilised tools. Join Craft Victoria and Anthea Riskas from Full Tilt Creative to learn how to seamlessly integrate social media with your practice, develop an effective marketing strategy and utilise the power of storytelling to champion your unique artistic journey.

Session 2, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm: Smartphone Photography and Video

Great images are vitally important to building an audience and impactful online store. In Craft Victoria’s colourful and engaging session, you will learn the skills to create great photographs and short videos using a smartphone, simple tools and natural light. Join Sarah Weston to learn about developing a story through images, composition, lighting, planning and the wonderful range of editing possibilities available through different apps on a smartphone. This session is designed to help participants become image-ready for social media, ecommerce, as well as future grant, exhibition and event applications.

Glass Fusion Workshop with Anna St ClairSaturday 17 July, 10.30 am – 12.00 pm Arts Studio at the Old Cheese Factory

Super fun class making jewellery with fused glass. Each participant will make 8 pieces of glass which will be turned into pendants, brooches, earrings or rings. Work with coloured and dichroic glass to create unique patterns and textures. You will learn to cut and shape glass prior to its being fired.

Alcohol Ink Painting 9.30 am – 11.30 am

Share in the magic of handblown alcohol ink painting. We will show you step by step how to master this beautiful and fluid artform. Using inks, traditional Japanese Yupo paper and ceramic pieces, you will experiment and learn the various techniques. Price includes tuition, your ceramic tile and pot, Yupo paper and the use of our inks and all tools.

Resin Cheese board Workshop 1.00 pm – 2.30 pm

Resin is such a magical medium, it flows and changes right before your eyes. A liquid that drys as hard as glass, but still looks so fluid. Come and let us share the secrets to making your very own resin embellished cheese board. Price includes your cheeseboard, resin, tuition, materials, and the use of all tools.

Janet Matthews StudioJanet is a Pencil artist, known for her detailed and intimate drawings of animals, birds and botanical subjects. Her studio features an exhibition of her artworks, her own drawing space with artwork in progress, plus space for her regular classes and workshops for adults and children. There will be a ‘pop-up’ gallery in the adjoining room featuring artworks by Janet’s students. Students will be demonstrating throughout the weekend and Janet will be working on her latest artwork as well as sharing her art story with visitors.

Libran Dogma StudioAn exhibition of prints using various techniques by printmakers Heather Merrett and Di Lockwood will be on display in the gallery. Heather & DI will also encourage visitors to make their own cards using a mono-printing method to take home with them.
