Greetings Fidelity Five Star Members!! Boy am I finding out that to make the time go fast just have a newsletter article due every few months and it’s upon you before you know it. After I have scrambled to submit an article, I contend that I will get another prepared way ahead of time only to once again be rushing to beat a deadline. So here goes again!

Since becoming President in 2010 I keep thinking that the coming year will maybe slow down a little bit and my mind and body will catch up to some of the things transpiring throughout the bank. Unfortunately this has not yet been the case in the past and soon I will be running out of years.

Not only was 2018 another exciting year for our Five Star Club with fantastic trips such as the European River Cruise, the Ark Museum, Memphis/Nashville and several other shorter adventurous trips, it was an exciting year for our bank also. We explored a new core processing system, new bank products and services for our customers and purchased the State Bank of New Hampton adding eight locations in seven communities. I believe this is all going to set the stage for a REAL interesting 2019 when we will actually convert our core processing system, merge State Bank of New Hampton and Community State Bank of Tipton, bringing Fidelity Bank & Trust to $1.3 billion in total assets.

The Five Star Club can also anticipate an exciting year including another spectacular Alaskan trip and the Amazing African Safari Tour in October. I hope you are ready for the great things Fidelity Bank & Trust has to offer you!

One last item I need to mention before closing. I would like to congratulate the following employees who retired in 2018: Sue Burger (Worthington), Chris Moser and Sue Osterhaus (Guttenberg), Helen Wegmann (Dyersville), and Deb Hartman (Oelwein). These ladies had a combined total of 138 years of banking service. I think that is amazing!!! They have all been a very vital part of our success and have been amazing examples of work ethic and loyalty for the rest of our staff. I would like to thank them for their years of service to Fidelity Bank & Trust. We wish them the best in their next chapter of life!!

And, thanks to all of our Five Star members for making this club such a vibrant activity. We hope to continue to bring you some great trips and entertainment throughout the year.

We’ve been enjoying a friendly welcome to 2019 by Mother Nature, but it sounds like cold weather is on the way. So little snow up to the third week of January is very unusual, and it will certainly shorten up the winter for us.

We had such a great time on our Christmas Mystery in December. We visited Des Moines. Our first day began with a delicious lunch and a wonderful show with a couple entertainers including “Three Men and a Tenor” from Branson. After checking into our hotel, we were off to Flix Brew House, an unusual twist to seeing a movie. They served dinner to everyone while we watched “Instant Family,” a delightful show. After a restful night of sleep, we ventured to the private Embassy Club on the 34th floor of the Ruan Building in downtown Des Moines. Here, we overlooked Des Moines while enjoying breakfast in the beautiful and stately crystal room. Our next stop was Valley Junction with its array of shop choices. From there, we headed to Altoona for lunch and shopping in the new Outlets of Des Moines. On our way home, we stopped at Newton to buy cheese for the holidays at Maytag Dairy Farm.

This year we are taking a Branson trip in early December. So we will move the usual Christmas Mystery trip to a regular mystery trip in September – more on that in the next newsletter.

There is so much in this newsletter, be sure to read it cover to cover. Lots of new adventures and programs, with more to follow in June. Take note on the back cover of the two previews scheduled for May 23 (Hawaii – Feb 2020) and June 18 (Mediterranean Cruise – Apr-May 2020). Both scheduled in the special year of 2020, so come along and celebrate the new decade with us.

A big thank you to all of you who have been calling earlier for these trips. We so appreciate it. Without that last minute hustle, we can better tend to making the various outings and events more fun.

If a tour is cancelled due to insufficient reservation numbers, you will receive a full refund. Whenever we use an outside agent to book trips, we must adhere to the written cancellation policy of that agent.

This is why waiting lists are important. Even when you know a trip is filled, have your name added to the list. In case of a cancellation, we will call in the order of sign up.

Due to the distance between the Fidelity Banks in eastern Iowa, it is necessary for some people to travel to a central location to meet the coach. This inconvenience is unavoidable at times, and we appreciate your cooperation.

Many of you have probably heard about the REAL ID that will be mandatory for three things starting October 1, 2020:

1. To board an airplane for a domestic flight. However, if you have a passport you can use it.

2. To enter a federal building that requires identification to enter.

3. To enter a nuclear power plant.The REAL ID is an effort by the U.S. Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver license and identification cards. The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.There is no need to do this until your driver license is up for renewal. There is no added fee unless you do it before a renewal, for instance, if you lost your license and need to replace it. The license you have is compliant until its renewal date. Before going to the driver bureau call them to obtain the list of documentation you need or check online. Google REAL ID and it will come right up.

We will land in the Frontier city of Anchorage for a two night stay. After the earthquake of 2018 they are already up and running again. It will be interesting to hear some of the stories. They have not had an earthquake since 1964, so now they have that out of the way!!

On day three we board the Alaskan Railway in reserved Domed Car seats. Breakfast will be served in the dining car. Stunning vistas await as we cut through the beautiful mountains. By early afternoon we will arrive at Seward where our Celebrity Cruise Lines elegant Millennium ship awaits. Undergoing a multi-million “Grand Make-Over” this winter, the Millennium will redefine modern ocean travel. So you will be one of the first to step onboard and experience the new design concepts and the cutting edge innovations, while surrounded by our last great frontier. This day is busy getting acquainted with our ship surroundings for the next seven nights.

Day four is exciting as we sail into the pristine blue waters of Hubbard Glacier, with 1350 square miles of blue Ice. Watch the seals basking on icebergs, sea otters and porpoises frolic in the frigid waters. You may want a jacket on this day as you watch massive chunks of ice crash into the sea.

The next three days brings us to Juneau, the capital of Alaska, with Mendenhall Glacier. Then on to Skagway, a favorite port of call because of the White Pass & Yukon Railway. Icy Strait Point calls to us next with the longest Zip Rider in the world. Then we go on to Ketchikan, with its charming shops and the boardwalks of Creek Street. Together these ports of call have over 200 shore excursions to pick from.

On day nine we spend the day relaxing as we cruise the protected waters of the Inside Passage. Countless activities vie for your attention from sun up to sun down and with 17 hours of daylight, the options seem limitless.

After one last breakfast, we sail into Vancouver Harbor, where we bid farewell to the Millennium and embark on a scenic journey south to Seattle. This trip has so many inclusions, you will be amazed.
