STAY SAFE THIS WINTER
The cold weather and snow has arrived and we would like to
remind our participants to take extra care to stay safe!
• Please ensure you arrive with non-slip shoes to wear at the
centre.
• Hats, gloves, coats should be labelled to avoid any items going
missing.
• Please dress according to the weather. Layers are recommend-
ed as temperature may fluctuate throughout the day.
• Remember to bring any assistive devices needed with you e.g.
cane, walker
NOT FEELING WELL? Please do not infect others!
Participants should not attend the ADS program if they
feeling ill or have:
•new or worsening cough
•fever
•Shortness of breath
•Unexplained muscle aches or fatigue
•Vomiting, diarrhea, and / or nausea
To help protect our participants, we ask that anyone with these symp-
toms not come to the program and check with the ADS staff or the super-
visor to see when the participant can return to the program as recom-
mended. If the participant becomes ill during the day, while attending
the program, the staff will contact the caregiver to inform them and ar-
range for the participant to be picked up.
Thank you for working with to keep everyone safe and healthy!

Martha Cross, our Adult Day Service Nurse is retiring!
Her last day worked was Wednesday February 5, 2020.
Martha, better known as Marti, started working as a
Registered Nurse in Long Term Care with the Region of
Peel at the Davis Centre in 2000 and most recently
joined the Adult Day Services in 2015.
Marti tells us that working in the Adult Day Service
program at Malton Village, the Davis Centre and most
recently Sheridan Villa, has helped her recognize the
uniqueness of each Regional location. No one home is
better than another. Each home serves it’s own commu-
nity and it is the staff at each home who help make that
home unique, special and a wonderful place for our cli-
ents.
Recently, she has reminded us how much she has enjoyed all her days working for the
Region and that she will miss us all.
We wish Marti a wonderful retirement and thank her for all the wonderful nursing
expertise she has provided to our clients and caregivers.

CARF ACCREDITATION...OUR JOURNEY BEGINS
This winter, the Region of Peel’s Long-Term Care (LTC) and Adult Day Service (ADS) Cen-
ter’s continue our continuous program improvement journey by seeking our fourth term of
accreditation status through CARF international.
Accreditation is a process that happens every 3 years. We do it so that our residents, clients,
families, staff and board of directors-Regional Council- can have confidence that we are do-
ing the right things, in the right ways, and with the right people involved.
Accreditation is a thorough and thoughtful review of every part of our operations by a third
recognized third-party expert, to ensure that we meet the high-quality standards of person-
centered care that is set by the accrediting organization.
The Region of Peel Long Term Care and Adult Day Service programs is being accredited by
CARF International, an independent, non-profit organization that accredits several types of
specialized services, including aging service. The CARF accreditation process centers on en-
hancing the lives of persons served.
CARF is recognized by Ontario’s Ministry of Health & Long Term Care and partners with
them on projects that benefit residents and clients receiving care in residential centres or
through adult day programs.
*CARF International — A group of companies that includes CARF, CARF Canada, and CARF Europe.
What to Expect
As a step towards achieving accreditation, CARF will send a team of surveyors to visit and
evaluate LTC and ADS programs for quality of services. The surveyors will consult with staff
and interview residents, clients, families, and volunteers.
The survey is scheduled for March 9th—11th, 2020.
You will see communication about the accreditation process, including informational post-
ers, letters and displays at the Long Term Care & Adult Day Service Centres. There may
even be requests for you to be involved family meetings, resident/client interviews.
If you have any questions or information to share, please contact Lily Rank, Accreditation
Coordinator at [email protected] or 437-245-4631
NURSES CORNER: RESPITE
6
What is respite?
Respite services are meant to provide a break for caregivers for a variety of dif-
ferent reasons: so that they can go on vacation, have time away from their care-giver role for surgery recovery, to have home renovations completed, or just to
have a break and time to rest are a few possible reasons. In Canada more than
402,000 people over 65 have dementia. Some people living with dementia or living with other diseases can no longer perform daily activities or care for themselves. As a
caregiver supporting your loved one, this experience can be complex and tiring resulting in caregiver stress and burnout to you. You want to avoid this stress as it can take a toll on your
health. It is important for you to stay healthy so you can continue your caregiver role. Respite services are options to help prevent you from living with caregiver stress and burnout.
“Finding the right respite service to meet your needs”
The Region of Peel, and other Community Support Agencies offers a respite service at the Adult
Day Service Programs (ADS). These programs provide social, therapeutic and recreational oppor-tunities for older adults, while also providing respite relief for caregivers during the day, evening,
and/or weekend depending on the location. However, you may still feel that you need an addi-tional break from the responsibly of caregiving.
What other respite services are out there?
Speak with your Home and Community Care Coordinator to see if you would be eligible for any
additional hours of home care through Home and Community Care to give you more respite time.
Private Home Care agencies can also provide care in your home. These services all vary from a
few hours during the day, to having someone staying overnight in your home depending on what
your needs are. These services are not arranged through Home and Community Care and are not
covered by OHIP.
Some private respite businesses, like retirement homes, may also provide overnight respite. Fees
vary but would start at $100 per day and increase based on the level of care required.
Respite rooms are available in some of the local Long-Term Care Homes, and this is arranged
through your Home and Community Care Coordinator. The price is reasonable (approximately
$40 per day) and is usually “all inclusive” with meals, personal care, medication administration,
and laundry service included. This type of accommodation is in high demand, and bookings are
made up to 1 year in advance. If the dates you are interested in are already booked, let your Home
and Community Care Coordinator know you are interested in being on the cancellation list, and
sometimes there is an opportunity for last minute booking. One of the respite beds in the Region
of Peel in located at the Davis Centre in Bolton.
