Members’ Views of OLLIThe historical trip to Indianapolis revealed wonderful treasures at the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana State Museum. I was not aware of the rich set of exhibits available to visitors. The Chicken Velvet Soup at the L. S. Ayres Tea Room in the museum brought back warm memories. I was motivated to search for the recipe and make that soup at home.

—Bruce McLaren

I thoroughly enjoyed the Indiana history speaker at the fundraiser. Touring the villas was a great way to learn about alternative living after retirement. —Louise Anderson

The program on Presidential Elections was terrific. We particularly liked Darlene Hantzis’ presentation on the role of social media in the election.

—Betsy Frank

I really enjoy the lectures/discussion on the election process, and all the history of elections past. It certainly gave us a better perception of our current situation and how this bickering is a common theme in Presidential politics, and really not so unique!!

—Laney Meis

Love the variety of classes. The hike with Amber was great! —Faye Cowan

I have been involved in OLLI activities for several years and I have found them to be very professionally done, thoroughly researched, and fun! Just to name a few I attended; a class about about Irish culture which included a field trip to Bloomington and dinner at Runcible Spoon to listen to Irish musicians. Another class studied women artists through history and was taught by Dr. Harriet McNeal. I am looking forward to a trip to Bloomington later on this fall to see the Thomas Hart Benton murals and visit some of the other interesting sites of IU campus. The class offerings are quite diverse.

—Cathie Laska

To be a lover of learning...that’s what my Dad instilled in me. It is why I sent my children & grandchildren to Montessori school at an early age. If they learned to love learning there would be no obstacles or tragedies that would deter their path. Whether parents or grand parents were still around to guide & influence their choices, their thirst for knowledge would drive them forward, and to continue my influence in their young lives, I belong to OLLI. I want to be an example of teachability at every age. And beneath my lofty goals is the experience of FUN & Friendships! My life has benefited from OLLI!

—Barbara Lidster

I have been to the Arctic, the caves of France and Spain, even the U.S. Supreme Court without everleaving Terre Haute. How lucky am I! Join an ISU OLLI courses and you never know where you will go.

CoursesThe Silk Road

With Volunteers from the Inner Asian & Uralic National Resource Center

Date: Thursdays, February 2, 9, 16 & 23, 2017Time: 3 - 4 PMPlace: ISU, University Hall, Room 207Cost: $20

The Inner Asian & Uralic National Resource Center is a Title VI National Resource Center dedicated to raising awareness about its target area: namely the Turkic, Iranian, Mongolian, Uralic, and Tibetan cultural spheres. Some countries included are Turkey, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan. Volunteer leaders will discuss the Silk Road via real-time videoconferencing. Videoconference presenters will guide us on a look at the history, innovations and art of this historic route while engaging students in questions and discussion. History of the Silk Road: The Silk Road is a term that inspires the imagination, and its story is larger than what you may find in any textbook.

Innovations and Inventions: Science and Technology along the Silk Road: The silk road did more than just link Europe to Central Asia and other parts of the world - it brought Europeans many inventions and scientific breakthroughs from the far corners of the Islamic world. Many remain important even today.

Traditional Arts of the Silk Road: This presentation is an overview of various cultures on the Silk Road and the pre-colonial art forms that emerged from the religions and lifestyles of individual groups. With examples from visual arts, music, and poetry, we will explore the ways that arts on the Silk Road were integral to group identity and inspired cultural diffusion and adoption.

Contemporary Arts of the Silk Road: This presentation explores the post-colonial and post-Soviet interpretations and influences on contemporary art in Central Eurasia. Beginning with a discussion on Orientalism and using examples from contemporary Iran, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, we hope to emphasize that there are many new ways that the artistic and political legacies of the Silk Road continue to be expressed.

A look at six Asian countries, each changing rapidly today but holding on still, and proudly, to ancient traditions that make each unique. The six countries are Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Sri Lanka, and India. Although absent as a focus, the presence of China looms large in each country. Only Cambodia and Sri Lanka do not share a border with the Asian behemoth. Dorothy Drummond has traveled recently in each of the six. She filters her understandings through the lens of her background in geography and history. Once a Fulbright Scholar in Burma, she has written world cultures textbooks and has taught geography at both Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Indiana State University.

As the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of Indiana State University approaches, there is much to celebrate in the history of Indiana State University. This class seeks to examine the history of African Americans at Indiana State University from its establishment as a Normal School in 1870 to its rise as one of the leading universities in the Midwest. The class traces the evolution of the Black experience by examining the events, people, policies, and themes that were evident at the School. What the class also hopes to do is to examine the progressive nature of the School in terms of its education of African Americans from its inception to 1980. The instructor will discuss the history of the African- American experience at ISU using vintage photographs, artifacts, and oral interviews. The instructor will also share her research methods in collection of the history of African Americans at ISU. Realities of Life: American Scene Painting

from the Swope Art Museum’s Founding

CollectionWith Susan Baley, Executive Director of the

Swope Art Museum

Date: Tuesdays, February 21, 28 & March 7, 2017Time: 10 AM - 12 PMPlace: Swope Art Museum 25 S 7th St, Terre HauteCost: $15Maximum: 20

In January 1941, the Swope Art Museum’s founding director, Terre Haute native, John Rogers Cox (1915-1990), was given the rather daunting task of building a collection for the institution which would open on March 21, 1942. Cox made the bold decision to focus his purchases on recent American art by living artists. These acquisitions were highly publicized in the leading art journals of the day. Many of these initial purchases—including work by Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Burchfield, Edward Hopper, and Peter Hurd—remain the most celebrated paintings in the Swope’s collection. The founding collection consists primarily of American Scene Painting, a naturalist style of painting popular during the first half of the 20th century in the United States. The artists of the movement depicted scenes of typical American life and landscape—painted in a naturalistic, descriptive style. We will consider the founding collection, and how it fits within the context of 20th century American painting.

CoursesSuperstitions

With Ron Baker, ISU Professor Emeritus

Date: Tuesdays, March 7, 14 & 21, 2017Time: 2 - 4 PMPlace: ISU, Root Hall, Room A011 Cost: $15

Superstitions, generally called folk beliefs or popular beliefs by folklorists, are found not just among uneducated and isolated people but among all people–including contemporary actors, athletes, gamblers, stockbrokers, and other professionals–especially when chance is involved. As Spinoza said, people would never be superstitious “if they could govern all their circumstances by set rules, or if they were always favored by fortune.”

This course focuses on the nature, variety, and function of folk beliefs, emphasizing older beliefs collected in Indiana that accompany the four main stages of the human life cycle–birth, adulthood, marriage, and death. It also deals with folk medicine, including faith healing, and the relations of folk beliefs to prejudice and religion.

The course concludes with a look at the use of folk beliefs in American memorates and legends (stories about premonitions, death and burial, people with special powers, monsters) and British ballads (songs about transformations, enchantments, fairies, witches, ghosts), for as folklorist Wayland D. Hand observed, “popular beliefs may be regarded as the least common denominators of folklore. Like items of folk speech, which are also short and turn up everywhere, folk beliefs are found in several genres of folklore, particularly in folk legend and related narrative forms.”

Smithsonian American Art Museum

With Museum Docents, Smithsonian American Art Museum

Date: Thursdays, March 2 & 9, 2017Time: 3 - 4 PMPlace: ISU, University Hall, Room 207Cost: $10

The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the nation’s first collection of American art, is dedicated to collecting, understanding, and enjoying American art. The Museum celebrates the extraordinary creativity of artists whose works reflect the American experience and global connections. Visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum without leaving Terre Haute! Museum docents lead the study of U.S. history and culture using the museum’s extensive holdings of American art via real-time videoconferencing. Videoconference presenters will guide us on a tour of artworks in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection and engage students in questions and discussion. To See Is To ThinkIn a world filled with images, it is important to be visually literate. While exploring artworks that represent various time periods, styles, and mediums, students will: 1) build a visual vocabulary and learn how to form interpretations based on visual evidence, and 2) build visual literacy by examining the choices artists make in their work and why. Signs & SymbolsArtists use familiar icons such as the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, and the American flag to communicate their ideas about American culture and encourage examination of our society.

Rose-Hulman Institute Art Exhibit Tour

Date: Friday, February 3, 2017Time: 1 - 3PMPlace: Rose-Hulman Institute, Myers Technology BuildingCost: $5

This tour will start in Myers Technology Building to view artist Don Monroe’s paintings. Don’s works are based on his travels in each individual country: Russia, France, Italy, Greece, Thailand, China, Israel, Jordan, Brazil, and the Caribbean. He is most interested in portraying the people, culture, and history of the places that he has seen.

The next stop will be another temporary art exhibit at Rose-Hulman in Moench Hall. Karen Rutherford spent a majority of her career at Indiana State University from 1983 to 2004 where she taught weaving and other textile and fiber courses. Her recent work since retirement has combined drawing and her previous weaving experience, so the bulk of her work on display is a series of drawings with embellished thread work.

Upstairs in Moench Hall we’ll then view recent acquisitions of vibrant photography by the late Jeanne Dee. She enjoyed learning about the use of Photoshop to enhance photographs, and that led to the creation of some very unique abstract work. The entire tour will be inside buildings that are connected. There are a few flights of stairs, but an elevator is also accessible for those who need it.

In 1986, Terre Haute Mayor P. Pete Chalos declared the month of March “Women in Local History Month.” One year later, Congress proclaimed March to be “Women’s History Month” throughout the nation.

Over two centuries earlier Abigail Adams wrote a letter to her husband, John, who was attending the Continental Congress, that included these words: “I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws . . . remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.”

However, 144 years passed before Abigail’s request was granted when Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment -- by just one vote.

This program will focus on a few of the pivotal events and important people who worked for equal rights during that 240-year struggle including, of course, significant women who are a vital part of the history of Terre Haute.

Please join Dorothy and Sherry on March 1st to kick off this month-long celebration of women in history.

White-Collar CrimeWith a Detective from the

Terre Haute Police Department

Date: Wednesday, March 15, 2017 Time: 1:30 - 3 PMPlace: Westminster Village 1120 E. Davis Drive, Terre HauteCost: Free

Reportedly coined in 1939, the term white-collar crime is now synonymous with the full range of frauds committed by business and government professionals. These crimes are characterized by deceit, concealment, or violation of trust and are not dependent on the application or threat of physical force or violence. The motivation behind these crimes is financial—to obtain or avoid losing money, property, or services or to secure a personal or business advantage. A few examples of white-collar crime are health-care fraud, identity theft, money laundering, and insider trading.

The White-Collar and Auto Theft Unit of the Terre Haute Police Department currently consists of four detectives and a Sergeant. Detectives who are assigned the primary responsibility of investigating White-Collar offenses deal with cases of fraud, check deception, and other related offenses. The unit consists of detectives specializing in handwriting comparison. Wednesday PresentationFinding Fred:

Meaning Making from the First World War

With Josh Powers, ISU Administrator and Professor

Date: Wednesday, April 5, 2017Time: 1:30 - 3 PMPlace: Westminster Village, 1120 E. Davis Drive, Terre HauteCost: Free

Lieutenant Fred Foley, 26th Battalion, 2nd Division, Canadian Expeditionary Force, was killed in his bunker on September 30, 1916 from a direct hit by a German shell during the epic Battle of the Somme. His body was never recovered. Fred’s name, along with 11,284 other Canadian Great War unknowns, is etched on the Vimy Monument in France which celebrates its 100th Anniversary on April 9, 2017.

Dr. Powers will describe his two year effort to find his great Uncle Fred, the summer 2016 pilgrimage with family to France to honor his memory, and lessons learned from the Great War 100 years later. He will also provide a window into the tragedy through the eyes of post-war pilgrims who flocked to France and Belgium seeking closure on loved ones lost and never found, including by Great Aunt who attended the Vimy dedication in 1936 on the eve of a second epic war tragedy. Dr. Powers will present a mix of stories, photographs, videos, and personal artifacts (such as letters from Fred and diary entries of comrades) that paint a picture of national pride mixed with a colossal mismatch between battlefield technology and tactics.
