Winter 2015/16
The Season of Giving
During the holidays, we remember the special people who have touched our lives and consider how we might
help others. The Stabler Centre’s lobby was filled with warmth and charm from the glow of the holiday trees
adorned with butterfly ornaments in dedication to a loved one.
The $87,000 raised during our annual Holiday Campaign helps us to provide quality, compassionate hospice
palliative care that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of so many families in Niagara.
May 2016 be filled with special moments. Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity.
Holiday Open House
News Page 2
Although it felt like Autumn, as there was no snow on the ground,
our annual Open House on December 10th brought smiles and
holiday cheer from across the region. We welcomed volunteers and
community partners, as close to 100 people attended.
Chef Patrick Engal delivered a delicious buffet, while George Manz provided the
musical backdrop. A great kick-off to the holidays and opportunity to come to
Jennifer Wallace in the interim role of
Administrative and Education Assistant, x222.
Welcome to Hospice Niagara
Laurie Straw, Director of Care, Hospice Niagara, retired on December 31st, 2015. Since joining Hospice Niagara in
June 2007, Laurie’s compassionate approach and genuine care for our residents and their families, and clinical expertise
were instrumental in establishing a strong foundation for our residential programs and services.
Laurie’s strong relationship building skills, along with her passion for serving her community helped to enhance the
organization’s ability to respond to the ever-changing needs of residents and their loved ones.
Laurie’s mentorship of staff, as well as her advocacy work to ensure people receive timely
access to hospice palliative care, proved immeasurable in terms of bringing consistency to
our philosophy of person-centered care and our day-to-day practices.
A special evening was held in January to celebrate Laurie’s history with Hospice Niagara.
We wish Laurie the very best through this life transition and thank her for all that she has
accomplished during her career with us. Laurie has expressed a keen interest in returning to
the organization as a volunteer and we look forward to seeing her.
We also pay tribute to Lori McInnes for her dedication and commitment. Lori joined Hospice Niagara as a volunteer in
2008 and for some time has provided the Director of Care with full time administrative support, as well as helping with
front line roles in the residence. We are delighted that she will continue as a volunteer with us.
Laurie Straw Retires and Lori McInnes Changes Roles
Best wishes to Kate Murrell
Heartfelt thanks go to Kate for her many
contributions to Hospice Niagara since joining
us three years ago. Her last day with us was
February 19th and we wish her all the best in
her new role with another non-profit community
group in Niagara. Kate will continue
to volunteer with us.

Bequests are one of the simplest, yet most effective, ways of giving to Hospice Niagara. They have helped shape and build Hospice Niagara programs, and are essential to the vitality of Hospice Niagara’s mission. Bequests indicate your commitment to Hospice Niagara’s mission, yet do not affect your financial assets until after you pass away. Explore how your bequest can assure your own legacy to Hospice Niagara. Through your estate, life insurance, or retirement plan, you can provide general support to Hospice Niagara, or fund a program that is important to you. When meeting with your lawyer, consider the ways you can make a bequest: A specific bequest directs a dollar amount or particular assets (such as securities or stocks, real estate, or
tangible personal property) to Hospice Niagara. A residuary bequest directs all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate to Hospice Niagara, after
specific amounts bequeathed to other beneficiaries are distributed and estate-related expenses are paid. You may also designate Hospice Niagara as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy which can save considerably on taxes. All gifts of any amount make a difference to Hospice Niagara.
