ABOUT THE COVERLorain’s Devon Andrews earned the Lorain County Mr. Basketball award after a

remarkable senior season. Helping lead the Titans to a 25-1 record last year, Andrewsaveraged 17 points, 3.4 rebounds and two assist a game. In his four seasons with theTitans the second team All-Ohio forward broke eight school records including acareer average of 21 points a game, 972 career points and hitting 67 percent from thefield. Andrews is looking to continue his basketball career at Kent State. He will red-shirt his freshmen year.

Amherst’s Brooke Wallace was named Lorain County’s 2015 Miss Basketball. TheComet’s forward also picked up the honors of Division I All-Ohio honorable mentionand second team All – District. In her senior season, Wallace helped lead Amherst toa 13-9 record by averaging a double – double of 13 points and 12 rebounds a game.She ended her time with the Comets as just the second player in the school’s historyto surpass 1,000 career points. Wallace will continue to play basketball this year atWayne State in Michigan.

season is special to me. Occa-sionally I look at my collectionof many years of score sheets,and I discover that every yearthere’s a team, a game or a per-formance that stands the testof time. But there are also sea-sons that extend far beyondspecial, to the point of magi-cal, and last year was one ofthose. It was a campaign peo-ple will talk about years anddecades from now, as folks willreminisce about an amazinggroup of young men thatbrought a city and countytogether on an incredible ride.“Remember that Lorain boysteam in the 14-15 season, it wasunbelievable”. It certainly was.Can it happen again? Will ateam provide some magic?Over the next few months wewill find that out.

Lorain comes off that magi-cal 25-1 district championshipseason, with a bevy ofreturnees, including DaviereAndrews, Naz Bohannon,

Anfernee Smothers, ShaneSmith, Kevin Davis and JamarRoss. That’s a ton of talent backfor a regional team, but coachJohn Rositano will not let themlive off last year’s success, plusthey need to replace DevonAndrews and Rashod Berry.

That said, Lorain appearsprimed for another great run.

Elyria coach Brett Larrickthinks his Pioneer team is infor a nice season as well. Ledby 3rd team All-State selectionBlake Furcron, as well as Anto-nio Blanton, Josh Lotko, NateMarks, Darquan Woods, KyleRinger and Chris Atkinson,Elyria returns a great deal oftalent off a 19 win team lastyear. Elyria will bang headswith the likes of Brunswick,Strongsville, Medina, Mentorand Solon in the new GreaterCleveland Conference so theschedule will be a big chal-lenge.

Elyria Catholic comes off an18 win season and returnssome terrific players. CoachPhil Kuchta welcomes backseniors Jake Kuchta, DarinGuice, Brian Duffield, Cole Vir-

gin and Kevin Kelley. Kuchtaalready has well over 100 3-point shots in his career, andGuice is a lightening quickpoint guard. EC has a ruggedschedule, facing Bay, RockyRiver, Parma, Normandy, HolyName, and Padua in the newGreat Lakes Conference, withnon-conference games againstthe likes of Elyria, Lorain, War-rensville Heights, Bedford andCleveland Central Catholic.Come tournament time, thePanthers will be battle tested.

Swinging to the PAC, Key-stone will defend the StarsDivision crown, and returnseveral key players from thatdivision championship squad.Coach Jeff Holzhauer will wel-come back Austin Conrad,Chris Sittinger, and the Kuhlbrothers, Brandon and Brody.Keystone is primed for another

big season. Alan Januzzi willreturn to Lorain County has ahead coach, departingLutheran West (where theLonghorns won the StripesDivision championship lastyear) for Firelands. The Fal-cons were a winning club lastyear, and coach Januzzi inher-its veteran players Colin Myers,and Jack O’Keefe. “Doc”Januzzi joins his dad in comingto Firelands from LutheranWest. Wellington coach DanGundert put several youngplayers on the hardwood lastseason, so while the won-lossrecord wasn’t overwhelming,the Dukes gained some valu-able experience. Returneesinclude Trey Bealer who hasbeen a three-year starter in thepost, while two sophomoreswho started as 9th graders last

Tom Moyer, whohad been the Brookside girlscoach, replaces BrentSchrempf who accepted anadministrative position at thenew high school. The Cardinalshave key returnees in seniorChristian Carrion, and juniorsTyler Adam and Travis Fortney,and newcomers Norm Eliasand Manny McNeil areexpected to contribute as well.Buckeye comes off a fantasticseason in which they finishedjust one game behind Key-stone in the Stars Division raceand the Bucks should be verycompetitive again this year.Black River struggled last yearin the win-loss column, andlooks to rebound this season.On the Stripes Side, LutheranWest won the division title last

year, but as noted earlier, theywill have a new head coach inDrew Senney with Alan Januzzinow at Firelands. Columbiafinished two games back in theStripes, but coach Larry Babicswelcomes back a fabulous tal-

ent in senior David Delahunty,as well as key contributors inJustin Tachite, Jordan Delisle,and Taylor Beck. Coming off a15 win season, the Raiders lookto be formidable again thisseason. Clearview will have aslew of returnees this season asthe dean of Lorain Countycoaches John Szalay has Anto-nio Bennett, Lance Billings,Juan Torres, Antonio Alvarado,Deuce Martin and DeAri Toddall back. With that amount ofexperience, depth, and talent,the Clippers should be verycompetitive this season. Ober-lin went through growingpains last year, as severalunderclassmen were on thefloor for Kurt Russel’s Phoenixsquad. It resulted in a toughwon-loss record. This year,juniors Donald Johnson, DavidPayne, Zion Hicks and CalebHoughly hope to grow fromthat experience, and turn somelosses into Oberlin wins.Fairview and Brooklyn willround out the Stripes Division.

Division 2 Districtrunner-up Vermilionwill need to replace atremendous talent inKyle Nader, but coachKurt Habermehl willhave veteran playersin seniors CalebWaller, and RyleyMiller, junior DrewDawson, and sopho-more Joby Pfeil tobuild around. TheSailors will be a toughmatchup throughoutthe season and cometournament time, Ver-milion is never aneasy “out”.

Lake Ridge will lookto build off a 9 winseason last year. BrianAnsberry has a greatplayer back in 1stTeam All-District, andSpecial Mention All-Ohio Sam Waldock.

Other seniors include JaysonLuccioni and Nick Ortiz, whilejunior Collin Harris and soph-omore Brian Smith will con-tribute as well. At Open Door,coach Todd Wright lost 9 sen-iors to graduation, including

two time D4 Player of the YearAndrew Patterson, so some re-tooling is in order. The Patriotsreturn one starter, seniorDustin Hackney, while severalother players will see action forthe first time at the varsitylevel, including a few fresh-men. Aside from Hackney, sen-ior returnees include TylerHaas, Clayton Wright and CodyEdwards. First Baptist secondyear coach Darren Snelling ledhis team to a .500 season lastyear, and hopes to build offthat respectable season withreturning players Jovon Jonesand Brett Snelling.

The new look SWC shouldbe a fun race. With Midview,North Ridgeville, Avon andLakewood joining the league(and Brecksville leaving) itcould be a ten team dogfight.Midview seems primed for avery nice season. As Forecastwent to press, several Middiebasketball players were still onthe gridiron, but once they gettheir basketball “legs”,Daimion Mahone, LoganBolin, Dimitri Redwood andDustin Crum will join JacobWells and Garrett Overy toform a solid nucleus for coachTroy DiFranco. NorthRidgeville coach Bryan Mor-gan also has a bevy ofreturnees, including seniors Isa

Abdul-Alim, Jordan Mont-gomery, Greg Draft, andDemario McCall, along withjunior Colin Sullinger. Thatexperienced group will paydividends for the Rangers.Avon has key players back too.Coach Kevin Sapara has fourseniors with experience,including Damantie Thornton,Jeff Laraway, Nick Toth andMichael Nose, and sophomoreDelshawn Orr who sparkled asa freshman will return. Itshould be an exciting seasonfor the Eagles. Avon Lakecomes off a very tough seasonin the win-loss column, butcoach Eric Smith hopes vet-eran players David Marsh,Mark Pappas and Carson Toycan get the Shoremen back ontrack this year. Amherst has anew head coach as Pat Braytakes over the Comet programfrom John Srnis. Amherst wassenior dominated last year, sothree-year letter winner CaseyMcConihe will be counted onto lead a very inexperiencedsquad. Seniors Tino Laboy andMarshall Busey are back aswell. Chris Dilisio has the Olm-sted Falls program playing athigh, level so the Bulldogs willbe a stern test for their oppo-nents this year, and Westlakecoach Shawn Hood expects hisDemon team to be very com-

petitive this season aswell. Phil Argento willhave Lakewood readyto battle in theRangers new confer-ence, and North Olm-sted coach Jason Frolowill have his Eaglesprepared for everycontest. Throw in thealways powerfulBerea-Midpark Titans(the defending confer-ence champs) and theSWC title chaseshould be outstandingthroughout the winter.The SWC will give fanstheir money’s worth!

Taking a look at the SWC,five Lorain county schools arenow in the new expanded tenteam league. Meghan Larrick’sAvon team is coming off an 18-7 season last year in whichthey lost to Wadsworth in thedistrict tournament. Larrickloses three players off thatteam who are now playing incollege, Sierra Davidson,Mackenzie Meckes, and Bri-anna Conroy. Returnersinclude seniors Alyssa Douzos,Allie Bjorn, Catie Kelly, ZannySauter & Sarah Sprecher. Alsounderclassmen Shay Davidsonand Amari Davidson. Larrick& her staff are excited aboutthe new SWC & hope to con-tend for the conference cham-pionship. Across the tracks atAvon Lake Dave Zvara’s Shore-gals last year went 16-7. Theyneed to replace last year’s lead-ing scorer Ali Balthaser andKay Butrey who was an out-standing rebounder. Theyreturn three year letter winnerSarah Winkel, classmates Mag-gie Moore, Hannah Nicholas &Laura Yurick. Juniors SarahLucas, Madison Branch, SarahHessel & Hannah Oehlstrom.Zvara likes his team’s chem-istry & is excited about thisyear. They should be competi-tive as Zvara says they are hardworkers & have a good atti-tude. Kevin Collins at Amhersthopes the Comets can build onlast year’s success. They went13-10 a year ago losing toBerea-Midpark in the sectionalfinals. Juniors Sydney Roule, &her 17.5 ppg are back. JaylaHall will be counted on; sheaveraged 9.3 ppg and nearly7rpg a year ago. Kate Lliff a

sophomore and her 5.5 ppgwill be back as well. Cometfans should enjoy watching theup tempo style Coach Collinswants to play. North Ridgevilleis a newcomer to the SWC;Amy Esser’s team went 7-16last year. They return the fol-lowing five players who allstarted games last year. AllieHollis, Sami Shaw, AddysenKerr, Izzy Geraci, & CiannaBright. They don’t expect tohave a go to player but insteadEsser expects more of her play-ers to step up & be scoringthreats. At Midview ScottPlzak’s team went 4-19 lastyear, returners include leadingscorer Carrie Carlson, seniorsJamie Verda & Arianna John-son. If they are to improvePlzak says younger playersneed to step up & help out. Allthe SWC teams will be trying toknock off last year’s top twoteams Westlake and Berea-Midpark.

Moving to the PAC,Clearview returns senior Tah-janae Flowers-Coleman whoavg 12.4ppg & 7rpg a year ago.Senior point guard JanielHawthorne is an excellentdefender. Coach Nick Dimac-chia hopes Brandyce Smith asophomore can bounce backafter being injured last season.Savanna Hurley is a post player& incoming freshmen VeniciaBillings will be counted on.The Clippers lack overall teamexperience. At Brookside BradBarhorst inherits a squad thatwent 7-16 last year. Theyreturn six letter winnersincluding senior Miranda Ver-latto a three year starting pointguard. wrestling fans were treated toone of the greatest seasonsever last year as every schoolsent a wrestler to the districttournament, 16 wrestlersadvanced to the state tourna-ment and two won state cham-pionships.

The good news? This seasoncould be even better.

It all starts with the ElyriaPioneers, who sent eightwrestlers to the state tourna-ment and finished with sevenplacers, two champions andfinished as the Division I staterunner-up.The Pioneers alsowere the first county school toadvance to the Division I statedual tournament — joiningDivision III’s Keystone as theonly two county schools tomake it to the event — and areexpected to challenge for titlesat both state tournaments thisseason.

Leading the charge for thePioneers will be their two statechampions — senior BenDarmstadt, who won the 182-pound championship last year,and junior Kevin Vough, whowon the heavyweight title.Darmstadt, who will wrestlefor Cornell next year, was astate runner-up as a sopho-more and a state qualifier as afreshman. Vough placed thirdin the state as a freshman, andbecame the Pioneers’ first

championat theWalshJesuit Iron-man tour-nament —widelyconsideredthe tough-est highschoolwrestlingtourna-ment inthe nation— last sea-son.

Return-ing withthe pairwill be fourstate placers — senior NicoO’Dor (fourth at 132), juniorJ.T. Brown (fourth at 170),sophomore Brendon Fenton(seventh at 113) and seniorMikah Price (eighth at 152) —and sophomore state qualifierJoshua Breeding (106).

Elyria also has returning dis-trict qualifiers in Brendan Price(2014), Jason Truxall andCameron King, and will beaided by the incoming transferof St. Ignatius district qualifierTristan Brady.

If the roster wasn’t formida-ble enough, Elyria will alsohave seven freshman that werejunior high state qualifiers lastseason — Jimmy Schill (whoplaced eighth), Matt Zucker-man, Drew Levis, Jordan Kee-gan, Jacob Truxall, LewisAguilar and Jaymone Whitaker.

The Pioneers had a record-setting performance — totalpoints, finalists and individualchampions — to win theirrecord third Northeast OhioConference championship lastseason, and should be theheavy favorite to win the inau-gural title at the Greater Cleve-land Conference this season.

Like the Pioneers, the Elyria

Catholic Panthers will be thefounding member of a newconference this year when theyparticipate in the inauguralseason of the Great Lakes Con-ference. The conference will bea solid wrestling league as theother six members — Bay, HolyName, Normandy, Parma,Rocky River and Valley Forge— all have fielded toughwrestling lineups in the pastdecade.

The Panthers will look todominate the lower weights,led by two-time state qualifierStan Bleich, who placed sixthin Division III at 126 last sea-son, and a trio of freshmen —Garrett Hruby, Steve Fergusonand Malik Gaddy — who wereall junior high state qualifierslast year.

Elyria Catholic will also beaided by the transfer in ofRobby Cobb, who was a Divi-sion III district qualifier in2014 for Oberlin.

The other county schoolthat’s by its lonesome in aleague is the Lorain Titans inthe Lake Erie League.

Lorain also has a solid coreof returning wrestlers, led bytwo-time state placer DevioneEdwards (third at 106 in 2014,

fifth at 106 last year). Also backfor the Titans are state alter-nate and two-time districtqualifier Brandon Bartlome,two-time district qualifier ZackKlima and district qualifierAndre Torres.

The Titans have beefed uptheir schedule since MarkMoos — a two-time statechampion at St. Edward —

took over the program threeyears ago, and they advancedto the Division I regional semi-finals in the dual team tourna-ment last season.

The Amherst Comets, andthe rest of the SouthwesternConference, are breathing eas-ier after Brecksville has vacatedthe league for the SuburbanLeague. The Bees won the SWCtitle all 10 years they were amember of the league.

The Comets were runner-upto the Bees for many of thoseyears and want to win the firstpost-Brecksville title this sea-son.

Amherst has a talented trioof wrestlers returning to help itachieve the goal — state quali-fier Todd Hastings, two-timedistrict qualifier Alex Reyesand district qualifier Matt Lee.

Avon joins the SWC as thetwo-time defending WestShore Conference champion.

Avon Lake, which had nostate qualifier and saw its onedistrict qualifier — Jason Bar-nicle — graduate, got an off-season boost when 2014 statequalifier Joey Bernosky trans-ferred back to the school aftera year at Lorain High.TheShoremen had 15 freshmen onthe roster last season and willrely on Bernosky’s senior lead-ership to get the youngerwrestlers ready for the postsea-son. Shoremen coach ScottPeepers said that he expectsfreshman Alec Negron to havea solid season at 106.

Midview is hoping to get itsfirst wrestler to the state tour-nament since 1994, and coachShawn Bristow should benefitfrom the challenge SWCwrestling brings to his pro-gram. The Middies will be ledby district qualifiers JacobSnider and Evan Keyse. Bristowexpects to be without a goodportion of his lineup — includ-ing Snider, Alec Forrer, Bren-dan Jatzek, Spencer Berthold,Trevor Begin and Seth Fram-bach — during preseasonworkouts due to an expectedMiddies football postseasonrun.

North Ridgeville, who joinsthe SWC from the WSC withAvon, Midview and Lakewood,will look to make noise in itsnew league, but isn’t sure whowill be providing it as theRangers have no returningstate or district qualifiers.

Wil Keller is the onlyreturnee with more than oneyear of varsity experienceunder his belt, but the Rangersdid have a long list — thatincluded juniors and sopho-mores — that were first-timewrestlers last season.

Vermilion is the lone countyteam from the WSC that didn’tfind a conference home thisseason, so the Sailors willwrestle an independent sched-ule this year before joining the

Sandusky Bay Conference nextseason. The Sailors will be ledby district qualifier Justin See— a junior who’s alreadyearned two varsity letters. Sen-iors Quentin Zadravec andJosh Hamilton also have multi-ple varsity letters while severalsophomores had solid seasonslast year.

The other seven countyteams hail from the PatriotAthletic Conference, which hasdone a good job churning outindividual state qualifiers andteams that put up big numbersduring sectional and districttournament.

Brookside has been a dual-meet juggernaut the past fewseasons, winning the StarsDivision title, advancing around or two in the regionaldual meet tournament andcapturing its fourth straightVermilion Duals tournamenttitle. The Cardinals will be ledby two-time district qualifierBrad Huhn, as well as districtqualifiers Anthony Chambers(2014), Cullen Wolford andGreg Packard.

Clearview will be looking toget back to the state tourna-ment after sending threewrestlers to Columbus in 2013-14, but missing out on the tripsouth last year.

Clippers senior Jarrett Hyl-ton almost kept the streakalive, finishing as a Division IIdistrict placer at 113. He’ll belooking to earn his fourth tripto the district tournament thisseason.The Clippers will havea new coach as Jason Stead-man stepped down to spendmore time with his family andassistant — and former head— coach Tom McCardle willtake over.

Columbia hasn’t had awrestler advance to the Divi-sion III state tournament inseveral years and will be look-ing to end the drought with apair of returning two-time dis-trict qualifiers in juniors ZackShaffer and Josh Newman.

They will be aided by seniorJustin Clark, a 2013 districtqualifier.

Firelands had a resurgencelast season under first-year

coach Josh Malave, who placedthird in the state whilewrestling for Lutheran West in2008. The Falcons went fromlast place in the PAC in 2014 tograbbing a runner-up sharelast season, and sent a recordsix wrestlers to the Division IIdistrict tournament.

Leading the way for Fire-lands will be two-time districtqualifiers Larry Verhovec andPatric Keown — the PAC Tour-nament MVP — and districtqualifiers Connor Eckman,Nick McCrary and Sean Lip-scomb. The Falcons will alsohave a pair of freshmen —Jason Norwood and MichaelCasella — that were juniorhigh state qualifiers last sea-son.The Falcons will also bene-fit from four incoming trans-fers. District qualifier MiguelMorell is moving over fromClearview, district qualifier —and 40-match winner — D.J.Childers is coming over fromBrookside, Paxton Sweetmoved from Indiana and Char-lie Yonts moved from Kentucky.

Keystone is used to winning— the Wildcats won a regionalchampionship in the inauguraldual team tournament, cap-tured the PAC Tournament titlein 2014 and won the 2012 Divi-sion III sectional title.TheWildcats have had severalstate-ranked wrestlers leadingthe way during most of thoseaccolades, and now they arelooking to see who on theirroster will be the next to stepup and lead the way.

Some of the notable con-tenders are two-time districtqualifier Ben Ocheltree, anddistrict qualifiers Clay Todd(2014), Justin Ocheltree andGarrett Coe.

The Wildcats will be withoutthe services of sophomoreJaret Bender, a 20-match win-ner last season who transferredto Elyria.

Despite Oberlin losing a pairof district qualifers to transfer— Cobb to EC and Verhovec toFirelands last year — thePhoenix has Morality Ander-son — a Division III districtqualifier at 220 last season —and Wesley Gallion — a 2013

district qualifier — back in thelineup.Oberlin coach CraigEnos expects his quartet ofseniors — Anderson, Sam Wil-son, Gallion and Kobe Fields —to post strong performancesthis season.

Wellington is another schoolthat has enjoyed tremendousteam success, winning a hand-ful of PAC and sectional titlesduring the past decade.

While both 2015 state quali-fiers — Nick Amspaugh andAlex Imhoff — graduated, theDukes still have a solid groupof experience wrestlers to leadthe way this season. Toppingthe list is three-time districtqualifier Jon Eschedor, whocaptured a sectional champi-onship in 2014. Eschedor hasthe chance to become theDukes’ second straight four-time district qualifier, follow-ing Josh Kitko, who placedsixth at the Division III districttournament last season.

Also aiding Wellington willbe district qualifiers Matt Kitko(2013), Colin Shaffstall, MaxMohrman, Steve Ferguson andDawson Hammer.

¬¬¬So Lorain County is filledwith returning talent and morethan a handful of imposingteams. This could be the yearthe county adds to its state titlelist — the Pioneers won thecounty’s lone state title in 1973— and continues to add to itsindividual state championslist.

Even if the area’s teams andwrestlers don’t capture thatultimate goal, the fans will bein for one wild ride.
