and more ethical marketplace. At year’s end, our BBB will be nearly 6,500 Accredited

Businesses strong. One by one, each of those businesses has made a commitment to a set of basic principles that are at the core of who we are. BBB Accredited Businesses have promised to build trust, advertise honestly, tell the truth, be transparent, honor promises, be responsive, safeguard privacy and embody integrity.

They may be only 17 words, but they are the foundation of what BBB has stood for during our nearly 100-year history.

As we get ready to ring out the old year and welcome in the new, your BBB makes the same promise for 2015 that we have made every year that has come before – to help build better businessess and a better marketplace by connecting consumers to trustworthy businesses – BBB Accredited Businesses.

Michelle Corey BBB CEO, CAE

We have updated successful programs, like BBB’s Request-a-Quote service, which brings new customer leads to Accredited Businesses, and we have introduced new ones, like the Passport to Learning webinars, which help our businesses sharpen marketplace skills in a variety of key business areas.

We have updated and streamlined our websites – both nationally and locally – and launched our “Look for the Seal” advertising campaign to help consumers understand the benefits of hiring Accredited Businesses. By year-end, we project that we will drive consumers to Accredited Businesses 1.4 million times.

Also in 2014, BBB continued to expand our involvement across social media and to strengthen our position as a trusted source of information for consumers, businesses and the mainstream news media.

And yet, with all of this, it may be the growth in our number of Accredited Businesses that has been our most important accomplishment. The statistics are stunning: in 2012 and 2013, about 1,200 new businesses each year became

BBB accredited; by the end of this year, the number of new BBB Accredited Businesses is expected to exceed 1,700. That extraordinary growth – a more than 40 percent increase in a single year - is testament to the belief that BBB Accreditation is both good for business and an important investment in a better

The number of new BBB Accredited Businesses for 2014 will show an increase of 40% in a single year.

A BUSY YEAR: Here is just a small sampling of the initiatives, services and outreaches that BBB produced in 2014 to add value for our Accredited Businesses and Charities and build a better marketplace.

News & Notes for BBB Accredited Businesses in Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois

Five Reasons BBB Accreditation is a Great Value

BBB’s brand has stood for trust in the marketplace for 100 years. Consumers and donors know they can trust an Accredited

Business or Accredited Charity.BBB Accredited Businesses and Charities are listed on BBB’s website, which is one of the top 350 websites in the U.S.,

according to Alexa. Being connected to BBB can increase searchers’ confidence in and ability to contact your business or charity.

BBB ratings – A+ to F - are an easy-to-understand way for consumers to gauge your reliability. Accreditation shows that you have commited to adhere to BBB standards, and those standards assure consumers and

donors that your organization is committed to operate in an honest, transparent manner.

BBB offers more services to businesses, charities and consumers than most other sites with customer reviews. We help resolve

disputes, connect your stakeholders to you, provide verified information, offer assistance from regional BBB offices and deliver news and tips that help everyone make better marketplace decisions.

Mid-Missouri Advisory Board Works for Mid-Mo Accredited Businesses

BBB’s Mid-Missouri Advisory Board heard this month that the number of Mid-Mo Accredited Businesses is up 12 percent this year. Building on mutual trust promotes stronger, more productive alliances through BBB’s ‘Gain by Giving’ program

By Jerri Stroud BBB Editor

Businesses decide to get involved with charities for many reasons – a sense of civic duty, a desire

to give back to their community or to set an example for employees or other stakeholders.

More and more, BBB Accredited Businesses are partnering with BBB Accredited Charities when they choose a charity partner. BBB recently talked with several businesses and charities about their partnership through accreditation.

BBB’s “Gain by Giving” program encourages BBB Accredited Businesses to gain by donating, volunteering or getting

involved (such as serving on a board) of an Accredited Charity.

For Tim Leon, president and brand strategist with Geile/Leon Marketing Communications, his involvement with the Children’s Home Society of Missouri came about as his company celebrated its 25th anniversary. He challenged his employees

to donate 25 hours, $25 or to give back to the community in some increment of 25.

For Oscar Berryman, director of corporate services at Monsanto Co., the opportunity to volunteer at St. Louis Area Foodbank was a way to get his team involved with Monsanto Together, a corporate volunteer program that has donated thousands of hours to nonprofits in the communities where Monsanto has a presence.

For Brett Tesson, owner of Tesson Roofing & Exteriors, it was personal.

As a young man, Tesson was matched with Sanford Scott through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri. Scott encouraged him to make better choices than he might have made otherwise.

“I don’t know where I’d be without that organization,” said Tesson. He and Scott “are extremely close to this day.”

Tesson recently contacted BBB to

find out more about BBB Accredited Charities. In a letter to potential customers in his part of south St. Louis County, he offered to make a donation of $100 to an Accredited Charity on behalf of anyone who signed a contract with his company.

“We firmly believe in the Better Business Bureau,” Tesson said. “I always encourage customers to do their due diligence, and I encourage them to use the BBB.”

At Geile/Leon, the 25th anniversary challenge allowed employees to choose any charity for their personal commitments. As owner of an Accredited Business, Leon felt it was important to pick an Accredited Charity.

“I come from a business background,” Leon said. “I wanted to be affiliated with a charity that operated and adhered to business principles. Working for a well-run charity will be a better experience for a business person.”

A year earlier, Leon had begun volunteering with the Children’s Home Society and more recently joined its board. For his 25th anniversary commitment, he offered to bring the charity’s leaders into his office to work with his public relations team on redoing some of its communications materials, including a new email template and a proposal template.

“We donated about 80 hours of agency time and accomplished an extensive amount of work for Leslie [Tucker] and her team to begin using,” Leon said.

“He’s a wonderful asset to the organization,” said Tucker, development director for the Children’s Home Society. Geile/Leon provided the Children’s Home Society with a template for a new email newsletter as well as a print newsletter. The company also gave the society pointers on talking to the media.

Karen Nolte, the society’s executive

director, said, “He was able to bring a whole army of experts to the table.

“We are a much better agency already because of Tim,” Nolte said. From a charity’s perspective, monetary donations are important, “but so are time, talent and treasure.”

Monsanto’s Berryman said working with an Accredited Charity like the St. Louis Area Foodbank reassures him that he is working with a nonprofit that has “good oversight”

and one that is “a quality organization that provides great services to our community.”

Berryman said he’s been involved with Monsanto efforts at the Foodbank for at least eight years. Since the Monsanto Together Volunteer Program began in June 2010, 800 employees have volunteered nearly 4,000 hours at the Foodbank. From those hours, Monsanto has issued more than $34,000 in service grants to the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

“Employees love having the opportunity to come and support these events,” Berryman said. “It’s a great team-building activity, and many of our people feel fortunate in their lives. To give back to the community and provide support for people who are in need is important for them.”

Ryan Farmer, communications director for the Foodbank, said he believes BBB Accreditation and the Accredited Charity seal on the Foodbank’s website, letterhead and business cards is important to many companies who partner with the Foodbank to provide volunteers or other donations.

“Nowadays, with people wanting to be careful with who they support, accreditation helps ease any fears” that an organization is less than transparent, Farmer said.

“You want to work with an organization that is being responsible with your time, your money and your food,” Farmer added. BBB

IFSt. Louis is indeed the gateway to the American West, then Cape Girardeau deserves to be

designated as the gateway to Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.

From its historic Old Town shop and restaurant district to the rich diversity of commerce along its busy city streets and highways, Cape sits at the entranceway to a region steeped in Mississippi River history and grounded in solid business values.

It also is home to Better Business Bureau’s newest regional office and the population center of a sprawling 28-county BBB service area in Missouri and Illinois.

Michelle Corey, BBB president and CEO, says Cape Girardeau was chosen as the site of the new office because of its location, population base and strong business ideals.

“The opening of BBB’s office in Cape Girardeau demonstrates a strong commitment to partner with consumers and business owners throughout Southeast

Missouri and Southern Illinois,” Corey said. “We are so grateful at how we have been welcomed by the people here. We promise to work hard to earn and keep their trust.”

Three years shy of our 100th birthday, BBB of Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois is looking to more fully embrace a region that has seemed at times on the far-flung fringes of our 92-county service region. Joey Keys, former chief deputy clerk and election supervisor for

Cape Girardeau County, heads the office at 3065 William Street; Paula Ball is the office’s business relations representative.

The decision to locate a regional office in Cape Girardeau – four years after BBB opened its regional office in Columbia, Mo. – followed a thorough and exhaustive feasibility study by MBA students at the John Cook School of Business at Saint Louis University.

The new office will be responsible for 13 counties in Missouri, stretching from Madison County on the north to Pemiscot and Dunklin counties on the south, and 15 counties in Illinois. The Illinois region covers most of the southern tip of the state, from Wayne and Jefferson counties on the north to the Kentucky state line on the south.

The full area is a patchwork of forest land, state parks, small towns, picturesque river bluffs, and rolling farmland dissected by miles of highways and blacktopped roads.

The area around Cape Girardeau has exploded from a small town to a thriving, vital city.

Today, the region is an eclectic mix of urban and rural, big industry and small family-run businesses that have endured for generations.

Donny Beasley, president of Tri State Water Power and Air and a member of the advisory board for the new office, said Cape Girardeau has grown into an important center of commerce as the largest city between St. Louis and

Memphis.The need for a local

BBB office is critical, he said, because of St. Louis’ distance from the area.

Beasley unapologetically endorses the idea of

BBB accreditation, saying it lends credibility to a company’s image and instills confidence “that the business is in good standing and it will do everything in its power to satisfy the consumer.”

Keys, who is managing the new office, is enthusiastic about the future of the region.

“The motto of BBB is ‘Start With Trust,’” Keys said. “And nobody understands the importance of trust better than the people who live and work in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. But for us, it is more than just a motto; it is a reflection of our values. It is the way we live our lives.” BBB

Advertising – in print, on television or online – can persuade an audience to take action, such as

buying a product or service. However, if an ad doesn’t follow legal and ethical guidelines, problems may occur.

Since its inception, BBB has worked with the business community to promote truth in advertising and encourage companies to follow BBB’s Code of Advertising Standards. The Code follows three basic principles:

➊ Advertisers bear primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising.➋ Advertisements that are untrue,

falsely disparaging of competitors, or insincere offers to sell, shall not be used.➌ An advertisement as a whole may

be misleading although every statement separately considered is literally true.

Starting in January, BBB is launching its Ad PreView program: a free service to help BBB Accredited Businesses vet their advertisements to avoid disseminating ads that have the capacity to mislead.

The service will be a guide for business to advertise legally and ethically, but BBB cannot guarantee they will avoid regulatory attention.

With BBB’s Ad PreView program, BBB Accredited Businesses ask BBB to review their ads before they run. BBB will then provide suggestions about how to make the ads comply with BBB’s Code of Advertising so consumers can trust the message.

BBB ad review director, Alana Wilson,

says this proactive program will be a big help to Accredited Businesses, and BBB Ad PreView’s suggestions can assist businesses seeking to avoid creating unintentionally misleading ads.

BBB’s Ad PreView program will help businesses save time, effort, and possibly money, said Tracy Hardgrove, BBB vice president of operations and administration. “Responding to BBB’s recommended changes helps businesses, as it can be labor-intensive for business owners to pull an ad from a newspaper, revise it, and then re-submit it. By submitting a proposed ad to BBB Ad PreView before it ever runs, business owners can receive BBB’s suggestions, while it’s still easy to make corrections to the ad.

“Furthermore, if a consumer is turned off by an ad or feels misled,

chances are they’ll go elsewhere.”Avoid BBB contacting you about

potential advertising violations or customers misinterpreting the true meaning of your ads by turning to BBB Ad PreView.

The program begins in 2015. To participate, simply email your proposed ad to Advertising Review Director Alana Wilson at [email protected]. BBB will respond within 48 hours. BBB

What inspired your team to create StreamPage?

The Internet is both good and bad in that everyone always wants you to

read something, whether it’s a new blog or the latest ad. Consumers can get overwhelmed. I asked, “Why can’t we be smarter about this? Why can’t we target better

and personalize more, while interrupting subscribers less?”

StreamPage is the answer to that question.

What separates StreamPage from other newsletters?

The email newsletter portion of StreamPage is vastly different from anything I’ve seen. We use technology we have invented and the services of our content development team to create a different kind of newsletter. Instead of talking on and on about ourselves,

we talk about you—what your business has accomplished and what you can do going forward to be even more successful.

Which feature was the most exciting to build?

We’re very proud of our content management

system. Our representatives sort through news stories using the content management system, which helps us deliver to our subscribers a very clear, fun-to-read product. Beyond that, I’m excited about what’s on the horizon. We are now developing features that will enable StreamPage to touch millions and millions of people.

What should businesses expect from StreamPage emails?

The unexpected! Like emails from your coworkers, SteamPage emails are from people who are helping you do your job. We strive to be creative and to show our subscribers new ideas that they might not have thought of before.

Could you tell your favorite StreamPage success story?

I absolutely love it when email subscribers take the time to thank their rep for sending such useful information. We love to know that we’ve helped people and we love to have real conversations with our subscribers. We feel like we talk to you all the time, so it’s great to hear back from you!

How does StreamPage help businesses to show they’re trustworthy?

StreamPage gives you usable feedback about your BBB Business Review so you can figure out how to optimize it for your own needs. For example, StreamPage can tell you if you’re getting lots of hits on your BBB Business Review, but few people are clicking through to your website. That might mean that you should try using a new picture on your review. When your BBB Business Review communicates clearly about your business, your customers can get more information out of it and will find your business more trustworthy. BBB

< This sample StreamPage email shows the kind of useful information delivered to Accredited Businesses every month.

BBB StreamPage Helps Your Business Succeed

In first 10 months of 2014, we received over $36,000 in business from BBB’s Request-A-Quote service. When you compare that to our $650 in Accreditation fees, that’s a bargain. And that’s just one of many benefits we receive from being part of BBB. BBB membership has value!
