SAF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

• 30 college students and recent graduates devoted their summer to farmworker justice, reaching over 5,000 farmworkers and informing countless others about farmworker issues.

• 8 student organizers were trained on how to raise awareness and organize on their campuses, coordinating presentations and events attended by more than 300 participants.

• 12 farmworker youth came together to discuss issues in their communities and to develop their leadership through theater and arts, creating a mural about the history of the farmworker movement.

• 40 national & international partner organizations participated in our 14th annual National Farmworker Awareness Week from March 24–31, 2013 with over 500 events in 20 states reaching over 66,000 new allies.

Notes from the FieldLevante Leadership Institute youth created our beautiful “Farmworkers Feed the World” mural, reflecting their experiences within the farmworker movement. The mural has traveled across the U.S. and educated people about the struggles & dreams of farmworkers and their families. In an effort to gain in-state tuition for undocumented students, the Adelante Education Coalition launched the Let’s Learn NC campaign. Members of the coalition worked hard to introduce House Bill 904, organizing an “Undocugraduation” rally with students in caps and gowns at the state capitol to promote education equity. The Into the Fields theater group took on a new health topic this year: mental health and substance abuse. Actors portrayed the risks involved in abusing alcohol and presented stress reduction techniques and healthy alternatives to drinking such as playing sports, keeping in touch with family, creating art/music/dance, breathing exercises and yoga. Farmworkers received soccers, volleyballs, books and guitars to use for recreation.Comunidad/Community was the theme for this summer’s crop of documentary interns and fellows. Students interviewed farmworkers and other community members gathering stories of working from sun up to sundown in the fields under the hot sun each day; of outreach workers pull-ing overtime to ensure migrant children are enrolled in education programs; of beautiful vegetable gardens tended by workers in their backyards; and of dreams to return home to family after months or years of separation. This year the Student Organizing School emphasized organizing others on campus rather than solely raising awareness. Student organizers participated in the annual NAACP-led Historic Thousands on Jones (HKonJ) Street march to make connections with and learn from important organizers in our state. In the 2013 legislative session, the Farmworker Advocacy Network supported Senate Bill 707 “Family Farms/Child Labor Amendment” and SB 662 “Labor/Farmworkers; Health and Safety Amendment”. As these bills did not move forward, we put energy into creating and releasing a child labor PSA in support of our legislation to equalize labor laws for children. The 14th annual National Farmworker Awareness Week included over 500 creative events such as the United Farm Workers’ César Chávez Immigration Reform March with 20,000 participants, Students Against Migrant Exploitation’s speaking tour at schools across Ontario, Canada reaching over 3500 students, and SAF’s own Instagram contest featuring different photos of farmworker issues each day during the week of action.

In Idaho and North Carolina we held 2 in the first of a series of on-going alumni socials with over 25 alumni to hear what alumni are up to, catch them up on SAF’s work, and find out what they need from us in order to stay involved in the farmworker movement. Into the Fields interns and Sowing Seeds for Change fellows worked full-time with farmworker agencies, conducting health assessments and transporting workers to clinic appointments, providing know-your-rights legal trainings, recruiting migrant students for education programs, and much more. They used their personal time to write blogs about their ex-periences, perform with the theater group, create documentaries, present about farmworkers, & organize service projects in their new communities.

“My most memorable experience with SAF was when I gave my first presenta-tion on the mural by myself at Mt. Olive College. Through that experience, I was able to prove to myself that I can do anything I want... My plan for my future is to some day become a veterinarian and I know that in order to get there, I must exceed aca-demically to be able to get accepted into a competitive vet school and taking this big step of gaining courage to stand in front of an audience proves to me that I can do more as long as I set myself to it.” — Selena Ibarra, 2012–13 Levante Leadership youth

On Students “10 weeks, 30 SAFistas, one passion: farmworker justice. In only 10 weeks my professional, per-sonal and academic life have been impacted tremendously. As I learned about farmworker rights in South Carolina at SC Legal Services and witnessed the role of an attorney advocating for agriculture rights, I began to question my career route. Law continues to be my journey, my destina-tion however, remains unknown. As I prepare to go back to my life in a state where agricultural rights have been marked by Cesar Chavez, I have mixed feelings about how different life is back home compared to what I saw this summer. I will begin spreading farmworker awareness on my campus and around my two communities. I’m planning to start a club as well as preparing a presentation to both inform and influence other stu-dents to get involved in this movement. I take with me something from every SAFista, from every outreach experience and every retreat. Ten weeks changed my life and to me that is a blessing.” — Jasmine Romero, 2013 SAF Intern at SC Legal Services

“SAF has really had an impact on my first-year experience at Duke, because it has taken me out of the comfort of a regular student’s life and has opened my eyes to other issues that face a large part of the working class. It has turned my Duke experience into not only a “college experience” but a real-life experience - standing up for something that really matters to me. It has also allowed me to build lasting friendships and understand the hard-ships that farmworkers face.” — Abrianna Robles, 2012–13 SAF Student Organizer

Impact On Farmworkers

[“From participating in the theater workshop, I learned] to lose the shyness to express myself.”

“[I learned] some experiences to cope with the stress and sadness of being away.”

“[The theater] is very important, it helps us see what is important and to value some of the things we have forgotten.”

“ It is great to see that you all do not forget about us, farmworkers.”

“Community to me is this, that we are a unit, we are a community, working together.”

“ Just keep on trying. Keep looking up. Keep looking ahead because if you don’t hope for something else you’re staying right there.”

“I give to SAF because SAF is an outstanding organization in so many ways: Life-changing internships for students (many of farmworker background); radical  action and accompaniment with farmworkers; strong coalition-building on farmworker rights and access to education in North Carolina; and connecting with allies such as myself in a thoughtful, dynamic and consciously evolving way!”
