hi Gaels,

I’m Susie Portz, and I’m in my fifth year as the Community Service coordinator at Bishop Gorman. My husband, Steve, and I have four children who have all attended BGHS and I feel especially fortunate to work on this campus every day.

This issue of the Gael Gazette is dedicated to service…an area that I’m quite familiar with! My goal is to assist our students in serving others and help them find what programs they are most passionate about. We've been doing that by giving our students numerous opportunities to see how they can give hope to those who need it most. Our "Gaels Give HOPE" program makes that point very clear: we can all give someone in need HOPE for a better tomorrow, by giving a little of ourselves today.

One of our first groups of students to take service to heart was Ryan Hall ‘97, Andy Kano ‘99, and Caitlyn Barry ‘00 who created our homeless clothing bank, Matthew’s Closet. Eighteen years later, the Closet is still open to serve those in need. Riley Foley ’08 was a junior when he began collecting blankets for the homeless of Las Vegas and he continues to collect and deliver over one thousand blankets each year. Another alum who found his calling through service is Michael Flores ’06. Michael has opened a youth center in North Las Vegas that serves more than 200 young people in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the nation. Currently, Juliana and Lindsey Remark ’12, have taken a leadership role in recycling formalwear from our students to a local high school with 175 homeless students. We have “Gourmet Gaels”, founded by Briana Ruvo ‘14, a group that bakes and delivers tasty treats to the elderly, pre-school children, and a variety of others in need. There’s much to be proud of and I’m so thankful to be a part of this Gorman family.

I hope that reading about all the Alumni, students, and families who are working to make a difference in our community will inspire you to get up, get out, and volunteer! There are so many people in need right now – and there are hundreds of organizations, just a phone call away, waiting to help you change the lives of others. So this holiday season, do some good with your extra time ...get up, get out, and give HOPE!

To get people talking, in a good way, Associated Student Government challenged our community to MAKE NOISE! Bishop Gorman Make Noise was a three and a half week campaign on campus created to remind everyone here that we all have the ability to make a difference in the lives of the people around us, especially our own community.

We each have different stories and are all faced with life circumstances that we might not get to talk to others about. In an effort to highlight this we asked a few students and a teacher to share with us something about themselves that people don’t necessarily know. Through the video we created, with the help of Mr. Joe Barbara, we were able to remind the Bishop Gorman population that it is necessary to not only treat those around them with compassion, but to reach out to them in a positive way.

This campaign allowed students to drop anonymous notes in boxes around campus to anyone they wanted to send a little encouragement or a compliment to. At the end of each week we would put the notes inside a balloon and deliver them. At the final bell of the day, the sound of balloons popping filled the air.

The noise of the popping balloons in the classrooms and down the halls showed just how many people we can positively affect with our words of kindness and encouragement!

Congratulations to the BGHS Boys' Soccer team on their win against Durango High School for the Nevada State Championship title. The game went into overtime, and our Gaels fought until the very end for the big win!

On Saturday December 1st, our very own Bishop Gorman Gaels Football team made Nevada history! Winning their fourth state title in a row, the Gaels proved that dedication, hard-work and persistence leads to a solid victory. Playing against the Liberty Patriots, the Gaels took the win at 63 to 10. Lots of fans came out to cheer on the team, especially our alums who put on a great tailgate, with great food and friends!

Congratulations to BGHS Troupe 4347 Thespian Board! At the Leadership and Tech Challenge the Gorman Gaels took BRONZE at the Southern Nevada Thespian Tech Olympics! Individual FIRST place winners include: Julie Borzage ’13 for Theatrical costumes Kelly Kinas ’13 for Theatrical Rigging.

On Friday, November 9th, students, faculty, and staff gathered in the gym for a special Verteran's Day assembly. This yearly assembly is a special time for our school to gather to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country, protect us, and give selflessly. We also honored those faculty and staff who served our country: Jay Bonar '82-USMC 1982-1986 Jhordan Canfield-USAF 1968-1972 John Goertemiller- US Army 1965-1990Barrett Henzel- US Army 1998-2006John Kilduff- US Army 1969-1971 Eli Maslekoff- US Army 1966-1969Larry McAllister- US Army 1970-1972 Kelsey McCall- USAF 1971-1996

Members of the Cheerleading and Football teams got together with the clients at Trendz Youth Center to share their talents and provide a day of full of sports fun! Trendz Youth Center was founded three years ago by alum, Michael Flores ’06. With their passion for service, Juliana and Lindsey Remark ’13 (Deanna (Cambeiro) Remark ’84) started “Spread the Cheer” with the hope that they could touch many children in need with the spirit of Cheer! Members of the football team and cheer squad who also helped out included kline fielden ’13, Maggie DiFederico ’15 (Maureen (Raftery) ’82 & Tio DiFederico ’77), Shayna Berger ’15, and many more!

Alumni and families gathered at Three Square Food bank on Saturday, September 8th to join in on Service Day. The over 100 volunteers, including alums Courtney Bonnici '05, Kim Walker '75, and Mary Beth Higgins '75, helped organize food into large banana boxes that would later be sent to one of the many other non-profits in the Las Vegas valley that Three Square caters to. The helpers also received a tour of the food bank’s massive facility and a little background on exactly what it means to help feed the hungry in Nevada. Together as a community, it was a day well spent! Giving back always feels good and doing it as a Gael is even better!

It’s important to serve! Look for more opportunities to serve the community with Bishop Gorman in the near future! Gear up to do some good with your family and other Gaels at Alumni and Family Service Day!

Nearly 100 Bishop Gorman students, parents and staff gathered on October 4th at Catholic Charities to provide a warm seated meal to hundreds of the Las Vegas homeless. Meals at the St. Vincent’s dining

facility are typically served “buffet-style”, however this meal, on the Feast of St. Francis, was special in

that each client received their dinner at a table from one of our gracious volunteers. Mrs. Vicki Fertitta

sponsored this wonderful event, helping our students to not only serve a meal, but to take time getting

to know the clients of the St. Vincent’s dining facility. The staff at Catholic Charities were amazed with the Bishop Gorman community and the tenderness and

compassion our students showed for those who came to eat. It was time for those who volunteered to truly

know that “it is better to give, than to receive.”

it is more blessed to GIVE than to receive.

You’ve been involved with service a long time …Where did service/serving the community start for you? I got started serving kids in need when I went with Brother Cory and a team from Campus Ministry to serve at an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. It was so fun to spend time with the kids, their joy was contagious! I never knew that years later I would be serving kids in poverty right here in my hometown.

What was the inspiration for Club Christ Ministries? In college at UNLV I was looking for a place to belong. I made quite a few mistakes in high school and wanted to turn over a new leaf. I found a Christian group called InterVarsity and started to take my relationship with God seriously. Then I began praying a dangerous prayer, "Lord use me." I began seeing opportunities to serve open up all over the place. I spent one of my summers with the Fresno Urban Internship. That summer I discovered that all I needed was a simple apartment to reach out to kids in need. A few months later I came home and wondered, "Why can't we do that same thing here?"

What kinds of service does CCM provide to the kids who go there? Club Christ has two centers, one in Old Henderson off of Lake Mead and Boulder Highway, and one next to Texas Station off of Rancho Dr. These aren't drop-in centers. They are expected to bring their homework and spend 30 minutes on our online reading program. We have great volunteers who pour into these young people. The kids are looking for someone who cares about them. That is why having a weekly Bible Study is so important. They need to know that in the middle of everything, they can trust that God is there. It breaks my heart to hear them pray for their dad to get off drugs or for them to stop getting bullied at school. Each kid has a story. So how did it happen? All I wanted to do was create a safe place for kids to go after school where they could get help with their homework and learn about God. On the search with a friend, I ended up at a church on "D" street. I had never been on that side of town but I wasn't afraid. I knew there was something God wanted me to do there. We ultimately ended up in one of the most notoriously dangerous apartment complexes in the city, "The Carey Arms." We were handed keys to an apartment free of charge and no questions asked. I was astounded! It was a total God moment. We knew we were in the right place. So, I invited my friends to help out and we opened up every afternoon. In the midst of going to UNLV and working part-time I filed the non-profit paperwork the next year and we were official! We opened our doors there in Feb. 2004.

What is your goal with CCM? I want to see Las Vegas produce leaders from the most unlikely places. These kids have a ton of potential, they just need the extra push our mentors provide. We help our teens figure out what is broken in their neighbhorhood and we let them choose a service project to meet the need. They get to be the ones who at the end of the day can say, "I did that." It creates ownership for them and gives them a taste of serving just like I had at Gorman serving with Matthew's Closet or being a leader for Kairos.

How can WE help? We love having Gorman students serve as tutors for our Elementary program. They get their service hours and the kids get a positive role model. For those who can't serve in the afternoons you can always donate. I would love to see more Gorman Alum invest into a charity that is helping change this city. You can give through our website at www.clubchrist.org or you can also give through our Amazon Wishlist by searching for Club Christ Ministries.

Advice to anyone who wants to get out and help the community? Invest locally. There are a lot of non-profits that could use your help. Spend time getting to know the leaders of these programs and ask what their needs are. That is my favorite question: "How can I help?" When you are willing to serve, God will open a door for you to make a difference.

This year, Riley takes on the 7th year of collecting blankets for the homeless at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. Every year, Riley partners up with some of the biggest and best organizations in Las Vegas to gather as many blankets as possible. Since starting his blanket collection, Riley has gathered over 5,000 blankets – with a record of over 1,000 blankets in 2011. Every year since the blanket drive started, Bishop Gorman has been one of his biggest partners. All the blankets given out, go to a homeless man, woman, or child who needs the extra warmth and care during the Christmas season.

Needless to say, but we at Bishop Gorman are proud to have Riley Foley '08 as a Gorman Gael!
