A MEMORABLE DAY

We had quite a Saturday up at the Collectors Plant Fair at Bilpin in April. Rained heavily for the first 5 hours butonly a little after that. The first 3 hours are when all the keen gardeners come to get first bite at the rarestplants, and they came. It was a crazy scene: full-weather gear + big brollies + gumboots for some. It’s hard todescribe: everyone looked wider than usual, so there’s this solid kaleidoscope of wet-weather colours throughthe grey rain, moving both ways up and down the main track and sliding off to nursery stalls at each side tograb some treasures. Adult Elfland. The wetness relentlessly entered our dry tent space, as bookbuyers (or people just wanting a brief break fromthe rain) came in. We wanted to see them of course (they were spending), but the act of closing an umbrella, orraising an arm, or turning to talk meant a small trail of waterdrops over the books for gimlet-eyed Caitlin and Gilto dive towards, cloth at the ready. After a few hours, we had plastic sheets strung around the entrance, towelsto dry hands so people could handle the ahem merchandise and were double-wrapping purchases to keepthem dry when the punters headed back out to their cars and buses. I call it ‘a memorable day’, and it was! There wasn’t one cranky look all day. Everyone just laughed and smiledand got on with it. It was the Rare Plant Day: with the choice of the finest plants from 50 of South-eastAustralia’s top growers. By later in the afternoon, there was mud up to our ankles in parts. I noticed one older woman on half-crutcheswho couldn’t get back up through the mud to the path. It was less than ten metres away, and so there we were:David Glenn on one arm and me on the other, half-walking, half-carrying her through it. If one of us hadslipped, we were all on our faces in it. But no, all we had on our faces were grins. What a buzz.
