Helping Mothers in Need . . . Succeed!

s Meet Our Mothers!AnnaCurrently employed as a secretary in the ER of Kennedy Hospital, Anna is working toward the day when she will be able to join her colleagues as a Nurse in the very same ER. She’s enrolled in the clinical portion of her training and expects to receive her RN from Camden County College in May.

She finds the ER “more interesting than any fiction I could make up,” and enjoys the constant challenges of the work.

As a single mother of three daughters, ages 12, 10, and 7, she hopes to demonstrate by example the rewards of hard work and education. And she looks forward to the day when she has the time to volunteer for LRAF. “I think the Foundation is amazing and I want to become more involved,” she said. She’s truly grateful for the support. “The books are ridiculously expensive and the scholarship really helps.”

The LRAF Newsletter is introducing a new feature — “Meet Our Mothers!” In each issue we will profile one or more of the mothers who are benefiting from the Foundation’s services. These women continue to amaze us as they challenge adversity through their hard work, dedication and strength of character.

Mothers Matter . . . In the PinkOn Saturday, November 7th, the LRAF Mothers Matter Committee partnered with the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey at a workshop held at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly to complete requirements for their “In the Pink” breast cancer awareness badge.

Twenty-seven Girl Scouts participated in the program which included talks by Dr. Michelle Fantazzio about healthy lifestyles to prevent breast cancer and mammography technician. Kim Ballinger.

The scouts also worked with Mothers Matter committee members Louisa Tilsner, Claire Carmody and Susan Nesselrode to assemble 144 Mothers Matter gift bags; each gift bag contained 12 pink personal care items in keeping with the program theme. These gift bags, plus an additional 106 prepared after the event, were brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Rehabilitation program for delivery to client’s homes during the holiday season.

Please check our website — www.laurenslegacy.org or our Facebook page for Mothers Matter 10th season celebration information and to volunteer to help collect items or to assist at Mothers Matter headquarters.

Mothers Matter to Celebrate Ten Seasons of Brightening Mother’s Day for Thousands of WomenFor Mother’s Day 2001, a small group of volunteers collected enough women’s personal care items to fill 265 gift baskets which they distributed to three day care centers and two women’s shelters for the holiday. Since then hundreds of schools, businesses and organizations have donated enough items to fill more than 13,000 gift baskets assembled by an ever increasing team of dedicated and hardworking Mothers Matter volunteers.

One of the highlights of the upcoming 10th season is the expansion of our Mothers Matter program to Long Island, NY. This new effort will be coordinated by Renie and Mitch Freedman, long-time friends of the Rose Family and Laura and Ricardo Basamante, members of the STAR Touring Riding Chapter 278 in Suffolk County, NY. The regional Dollar Tree stores will assist with in-store Mothers Matter collection drives.
