    A great place to volunteer!

    Crossroads Mission Yuma, AZWinter 2008/2009

C rossroads Mission is a great place to volunteer, that is what the Yuma community has spoken. Wereceived the honor of being nominated for the YumasBest place to volunteer in 2009! This award, given by

the Yuma Sun, is very special since it is the communityand the readers who make the nominations and select thewinners. Most of all, it is our volunteers themselves whokeep telling us that they love to volunteer at Crossroads.

Last scal year our volunteers donated 23,133 hours of service. At the national dollar value of a volunteers timeat $20.25 per hour that equates to $468,443.25. Thatis a direct savings of almost half a million dollarsto Crossroads Mission!

Our volunteers play an essential part of our operation. We have those who serve once ayear at our special events, all the way

to those who donate their timeon a full-time basis, workingover 30 hours per week! Theydo ministry work, repair work, transportation, sorting, cooking, cleaning, ling, and so muchmore it would ll this entirenewsletter to list it all.

Each year, we select one of our wonderful volunteersto receive The DoveAward: Demonstrating

O utstandingVolunteer E xcellence. Thisyear the award

belongs to AnneBooth! Shevolunteers her time, talents, andoften treasureto Crossroads

Missions 2 nd Chance Bargain Center. She startedvolunteering at the store one year ago and immediately

became an integral part of the store. At rst she worked afew hours a week but now she puts in more than 30 as the

Volunteer Coordinator!Anne took the initiative to enlist the help of her family,

friends, and acquaintances to be volunteers. She hasincreased the volunteer base from 2 to 20 in just a fewshort months

Annes team provides a minimumof 160 volunteer hours per

week at the store. Thatsequivalent to 4 full time positions! She provides

signi cant input to theoverall appearance

and functioning of the store by assisting

the store manager. Byre-organizing the sorting

area to run more ef cientlyand getting the donations to

the sales oor faster, she hashelped increase sales.

Anne Booth is aninspiration to staff, clients, volunteers, andcustomers alike. We

thank God all the timefor her and the many people who believe

    God Bless Our Volunteers!

W elcome to this edition of News for Our Partners! Were pleased to dedicate thisedition to our volunteers. Websters Dictionaryde nes volunteer as one who enters into, or offersfor, any service of his own free will. Volunteer hours for Crossroads Mission are dif cult to track

since our community has many people who arewilling to volunteer. At our holiday events, hundredsof folks from this community show up to lend ahand. We could not provide all of the services toall the hundreds of needy people we serve withoutvolunteers. We have folks donating their time byworking just a couple hours a week to some whowork 40 hours a week. The people we serve are

blessed by every volunteer who serves at the Mission. Each year the Yuma Sun newspaper takes votes

from readers on The Best of Yuma. This year, asin other years past, Crossroads was voted as TheBest Place to Volunteer. What an honor to have the

people of the community make a statement like that! Thanks to everyone who voted!

Weve also featured Anne Booth who is our veryown Volunteer of the Year. Earlier this year, I hadthe privilege of giving her the Crossroads MissionsDove Award for outstanding volunteer service. Annecame to Crossroads to volunteer just a few hoursa week. She saw what Crossroads does as serviceand ministry. Thats when she began giving moretime. Her willingness to take on the job of volunteer

coordinator for the thrift store has increased thenumbers of volunteers who work at the store. Thestore bene ts greatly from all of these volunteers whowork there. Most importantly, the programs of theMission bene t, as every penny of pro t from thestore returns to support the programs at Crossroads.

If you have just a few hours a week you can be a volunteer at Crossroads Mission. We havemany volunteer positions. By midmonth, we willhave our volunteer application online at www.crossroadsmission.org. The Family Shelter, kitchen,Mens Shelter, the recovery program, and the thriftstore are in need of your services. You can stop by2291 East Palo Verde to pick up an application. If your church, club, or organization would like tovolunteer as a group, we have projects that helpsupport the programs as well.

Finally, being of service is an act of servant hood!Jesus was a servant. Through his life, we knowthat being of service is at the very heart of being aChristian. If you arent from this community, nd amission near you or another worthy organization thatcould use your help. Not only will that organization

bene t, but youll bene t!God bless all of you volunteers in an extra special

way. God bless you folks who remember themission with cash donations but especially those whocontinue to pray for the mission! In His service to

    build a better community!

T he Yuma Big Band playing in the background, DaveBoyer singing beautiful oldies songs, people sharingat their tables, and couples dancing on the dance oor. That was the scene at our second major fundraiser for a newfamily shelter that was held on November 14, 2009 at the

beautiful AWC 3C College Community Center.

Almost 600 people took the It Had To Be You... Its GOTTo Be You challenge and helped us get closer to breakingground on the new building- Thank you!

Though Dave Boyer was the main attraction of the evening, at one point in the evening he wasovershadowed by the debut singing performance of thefamily shelter kids! They practiced hard and gave it their all. Were very proud of them. They just looked adorablewith their new matching out ts and everyone loved them.

The new family shelter is desperately needed! In November, we had to convertsome meeting roomsinto a temporary shelter for families. With Godshelp and yours, wellhave plenty of room tohelp all that need help.
