ISSUE 4 APRIL 2018 VOLUME 21

Winnie McGuire was born in Ferndale, Michigan just north of Detroit. She lived there until she was nine years old and then moved to Brooklyn, Michigan on a farm with her two brothers and sister. They attended a one-room school house until the eighth grade when they switched to Brooklyn High School.

Winnie’s father was a police officer and worked very hard providing for the family. When WWII started her brother was drafted. Winnie needed to help her family so she got her first job at Kroger. Later she transferred to the Kroger in Kalamazoo. One day she and a friend went to the conference grounds at Gull Lake and she met Maxell from Prairie Bible Institutes. Since the age of ten, Winnie knew she wanted to become a missionary and Maxwell convinced her to come to Canada and attend Bible School for four years she graduated in 1950. Winnie went to Japan in 1951 to be a missionary full time. She studied Japanese, taught English, taught cooking classes and, of course, worked with a Japanese church teaching Bible classes.

She met her husband in Japan where he was also working as a missionary, The following day after meeting her he asked her to marry him and they were married one week later. Talk about love at first sight! They had four wonderful sons. Winnie and her husband, Richard, moved back to Michigan in 1997. Two of her sons still reside in Japan, one in New Jersey, and one in California. She keeps in contact with them through FaceTime and frequent phone calls. She has seven beautiful grandchildren and even a set of identical granddaughters whom she adores.

Winnie has had some amazing adventures in life and is a pure joy to chit chat with. Congratulations, Winnie, on being our Resident of the Month for March 2018!

April 1: Happy Easter, and have a great April Fool’s Day!

April 2: Please come down and give us your thoughts and or concerns at our monthly Resident Council meeting. This important meeting is open to all

Residents.

April 3: It’s National Humor Month, so come on down and enjoy listening to some jokes. It is a known fact that laughter chases away the blues, so come on down and listen or tell a

joke!

April 6: It’s getting warmer, slowly, but it is getting closer to warmer spring weather. So come now and help spring warmth by having some of our wonderful ice cream and

freshly popped popcorn, and bring a friend.

April 9: We will be celebrating our friends with birthday’s in April with some great tasting cake and also listening to Virginia play some fun

music.

April 10: One of our very own, Caroline, teaches an art class each month and if you have not tried it out, come on down and let out your inner artist. It is great fun and very popular. It’s fun and you may surprise

yourself.

April 11: We will be going to Airport lanes for some bowling! This outing is very popular so get your name in to your Activity Assistant if making a few strikes makes you do a

happy dance.

April 17: Out to Klavons for some of their scrumptious pizza! If you would like to go, please let your Activity

Assistant know. It fills quickly.

April 20: We will be painting rocks, which has become a very popular past time! People in Jackson County are painting rocks and leaving them all over town, however; we are going to do a little something different with our painted

rocks. We are going to have a stream of painted rocks and a painted rock tree right here at JCMCF. As you might well imagine we will need many rocks and many hands to help, so please

come down and help out.

April 26: In the early afternoon we will open our Ticket Store, so be sure to get your tickets out and bring them down to “buy” something from The

Ticket Store that strikes your fancy. Well, it is finally that time of year and we will be starting back up our trips to FireKeepers Casino. As always, I keep

a list of everybody who goes so we can make it as fair as possible for everybody to get a chance to win/lose their

money at FireKeepers.

April 27: It’s finally springtime and it’s time for ‘David’s Cooking Show’,

such a great combination. Come on down and see, smell

and taste another wonderful David creation.

Please inform your Activity Assistant if you are interested in attending one of these outings. All events

are subject to spontaneous change.

May 10: Lunch at Bob Evans

May 22: Casino Fun at Firekeepers

May 31: Springtime Out and About

While we would love to take every Resident on every outing, it is logistically impossible to do so. Please know

that the Activities Team keeps track of everyone that attends an outing and tries to be as fair when assigning

the outings. If there is an outing that you would like JCMCF to try out, please tell your Activity Assistant.

We are always looking for new places to go! ~Julie Backus, Activities Director

Springtime is the time when we seem to jolt awake; eager to

enjoy life and renew our spirits. Time spent outdoors drinking in the sun and warmth was sorely missed

over this long winter and snowy winter. This month, I would love to share a Robert Browning poem that

seems to sum up the joy of this glorious season:

“The year’s at the Spring And the day’s at the morn;

Morning’s at seven; The hillside’s dew-pearled;

The lark’s on the wing; God’s in His heaven –

All’s right with the world!” ~ Robert Browning

I hope you feel the same!

Happy Spring!

Here is the recipe for the treat we enjoyed during the March edition of ‘David’s Cooking Show’. Absolutely delicious!

Chocolate Chip Stout Cookies Yield: 16-18 cookies

Ingredients:

2 cups dark stout beer

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup cake flour

3/4 cup bread flour

1/2 tsp corn starch

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

12 Tbsp (1.5 sticks) unsalted butter

2/3 cup brown sugar

2/3 cup white sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chips

Instructions:

1. In a pot over medium high heat, cook the beer until reduced to 1/4 cup, about 10 – 15 minutes. Place in the

refrigerator in order to chill to room temperature, about 15 minutes.

2. In a large bowl, combine cocoa powder, both types of flour, corn starch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter with both types of sugar, scraping the bottom of the bowl periodically to ensure the ingredients are well combined. Add the egg and vanilla, beat until light and fluffy, scraping the bowl at least once. Add the reduced and cooled beer, beating until it is

combined.

4. Reduce speed on the stand mixer to low and add the dry ingredients until just barely combined, making sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl to ensure that the butter and flour are all combined. Add the chocolate chips and

stir until incorporated. You don’t want to over mix or your cookies will be tough.

5. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and using cookie scoop, make balls of dough that are a bit larger than a golf ball. Place on a baking sheet, with ample space between each cookie. Only about 6 cookies will fit

on each sheet.

6. Preheat over to 350 degrees. Bake each cookie sheet one at a time for about 14 minutes or until the cookies are just starting to look dry on top. Don’t over bake, the cookies will continue to bake about an additional 10

percent after being removed from the oven. Immediately transfer to a wire rack.
