Winifred Atwell’s Hair Salon in Brixton (Site of Britain’s first Black Hair Salon)

There been various inaccuracies cited and often repeated regarding the address of

Winifred Atwell’s Salon in Brixton. Some historians have suggested it was 70 Atlantic

Road, although the most repeated mistake (due to a famous article published online)

accurate! The correct address for Winifred Atwell’s Hair Salon in Brixton was 82D

Railton Road, where the Nubian Jak Community Trust plans to erect a blue heritage

plaque to her in 2020. The whole block was listed as 82A - 82D. An application has

been lodged with the Housing Association ARHAG who are the current owners of the

freehold space where Atwell’s Salon was based. The plaque will be placed on ARHAG

property at 71 Chaucer Road which overlooks and extends onto 82D Railton Road.
