With the help of Jostens and their generous underwriting of a 25th anniversary publication and the creative work of our advancement team, we have tried our

Alumni and their families, along with our teachers

and staff, have made their mark on our history and are truly a part of our special past. We have been blessed through the generosity and love of so many and can deservedly take pride in nurturing and sustaining our mission to become the premier Catholic, college-preparatory high school in our region. Excellence is measured not only by achievements but also by a vision for tomorrow. In closing the chapter on our first 25 years, we now focus on the vision for future generations. Undoubtedly, the nexus of technology and pedagogy will be a key as will the achievement expectations of the premier colleges and universities that serve our graduates. The unknowns will be more numerous than what is proven. One thing is guaranteed to shape our future. A Message From Principal Raymond R. Dunne

Dear Friends and Supporters of SMCHS:

I write this on the Feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the patroness of SMCHS. In our school Mass today, the second reading was from the first letter of John. It goes to the very heart of who we are as a school, our charism, Caritas Christi, the love of Christ. “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.” This is our calling as Santa Margarita Eagles, past, present and future. For 25 years our school has stood as a beacon of Christ’s love; a beacon of the positive influence of a Catholic education on our surrounding communities; a beacon of excellence in all we do.

In this Year of Faith as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, we all are called to continue the tradition of faith given to thousands of graduates and their families over these 25 years.

It is extremely appropriate that as we now begin the next 25 years, we continue the call to be Caritas Christi to each other; that we continue to proclaim the Good News of salvation brought to us by the death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is from Him that our students are blessed with their academic,

athletic and artistic excellence; it is from Him that we know that “God is love and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.”

A Message From President Paul M. Carey

n September 4, 2012, Santa Margarita Catholic High School celebrated its

25th anniversary by recreating the ceremonious welcome, which took place upon the school’s opening in 1987. As SMCHS welcomed students back to campus for the 2012-2013 school year, Principal Raymond Dunne, President Paul Carey and the board of administration were thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone with founders, benefactors, alumni and friends who have been so important to the life of the school.

From the Olympic sized pool, to the LEED certified athletic center, to the

new academic centers, it’s amazing how beautifully the campus has transformed since 1987. Pictures of the school from its opening through the anniversary could be found around the school’s entrance and on the school message board, serving as a reminder of the school’s growth over the past 25 years.

The morning commenced on the athletic field with celebratory remarks and well-wishes, a reflection from a charter class alumnus, an aerial photo and then concluded with the Most Reverend Bishop Tod D. Brown blessing the front gates of campus and those in attendance processing through the gates, just as they did 25 years ago. Although,

back in 1987 the gates were not up yet, and only the entrance was blessed.

School founders Tony Moiso and Art Birtcher with his wife Gaye Birtcher were the first to walk through the gates. They were followed by benefactors, alumni, student body representatives and then concluded with the entire senior class. After the blessing, a gratitude reception was held for all guests in the St. Margaret Mary Alacoque garden.

“It was a great celebration of what Santa Margarita was, is and will be,” said Principal Dunne.

“On this day, I feel the same as a parent who sits at their child’s college graduation and wonders where did the time go? How proud they feel of their child’s accomplishments. This is the same pride I feel about Santa Margarita as I look back over the past 25 years!”

Family and friends who were unable to attend the event were even given the opportunity to watch the entire ceremony live via an online video stream.

“In celebrating this milestone, we express our gratitude to the Diocese of Orange, our founding families, early alumni and to everyone who helped us celebrate this special occasion,” said President Carey.

The ceremony respectfully recognized Santa Margarita’s growth from a charter class of only 216 graduates to a nationally ranked school with over 1,600 students, while also honoring the benefactors, alumni and friends who helped the school achieve this status.

Dr. Mary Beth Dougherty Assistant Principal

Dr. Dougherty began her teaching career at Millcreek Township just outside Erie, Pennsylvania, where she served as an English teacher, department chair for English, a guidance counselor and eventually as head of the counseling department for the district.

In 1985, Dr. Dougherty served as a counselor at Mater Dei High School before beginning to work on “Building The Dream” that is Santa Margarita Catholic High School in January 1987. Today, she is the Assistant Principal of Curriculum & Instruction.

Rich Schaaf Athletic Director

For nearly four decades, Coach Rich Schaaf has coached football, tennis, boys’ and girls’ basketball, the latter of which he was named CIF Coach of the Year when he led the lady Eagles basketball team to their first CIF championship in school history in 2005. In 2006, Schaaf was named the girls’ basketball Orange County and State Coach of the Year. Schaaf taught physical education at Ocean View, Villa Park, Gahr and Mater Dei High School before joining the Eagle family in 1987.

Coach Schaaf has been the Athletic Director at SMCHS since the school opened and has overseen 46 CIF championship teams, 166 league championships and six state titles.

Doris Gatfield Interdisciplinary Coordinator and Math Teacher

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from CSULB, her master’s from California State University, Northridge and her teaching credentials, Doris Gatfield joined the Santa Margarita family in the summer of 1987.

As the physical education and girls athletic director, she assisted preparing the athletics department for the school’s grand opening in September of 1987. Early on in Gatfield’s SM career, she took a math teacher position since she had a strong math background. A few years later, she decided to leave her position as athletic director and join the math department full time. She now teaches several math courses and serves as the Interdisciplinary Coordinator.

Betty Cottage Food Services

Betty Cottage has been working with food services since the day the school opened. She has joked with the students, advised them on the best picks of the day and disciplined a few when they tried to cut in the lunch line. Beloved by all, Cottage is still praised by alumni for her delicious cookies.

Doug Williams Associate Athletic Director and Tennis Coach

Coach Williams graduated from CSULB with his Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education in 1985. Shortly afterward, Coach Williams joined the Santa Margarita faculty as a science teacher in 1987. He now has a full plate working as the Associate Athletic Director, while also teaching P.E. classes and coaching the boys varsity tennis team.

Tom Smith Assistant Principal of Student Services

Right after graduating from CSULB with a Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Music Education, Tom Smith began working at Santa Margarita as the band director in 1987. From 1993 until 2002, Smith shifted departments when he took the reins as activities director.

Since 2002, Tom has served as the Assistant Principal Student Services.

25th Anniversary Celebration September 4, 2012

he 22nd commencement ceremony of Santa Margarita Catholic High took place on June 1, 2012 at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center, where thousands gathered to watch the class of 2012

step into the next chapter of their lives. Among those who spoke at the ceremony were the Most

Reverend Bishop Tod D. Brown; Vicar of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Orange Gerald M. Horan, Superintendent of Schools Greg Dhuyvetter, President Paul Carey and Principal Ray Dunne.

“All of us are at an advantage because of our time here,” Salutatorian Elizabeth Zarka told her classmates.

Valedictorian Katie Fernelius said that even though there were mixed emotions for some—those happy to move on to the next chapter of their lives, others sad to see high school come to an end—”We must rush into the next part of our lives with the same spirit as when we rushed the field after the CIF football championship win.”

Class of 2012Valedictorian Hayley Ritterhern reminded classmates to

follow their passions and dreams. “We are all capable of doing amazing things when we do what we love,” she said.

Dunne said it was an honor to watch this class mature.“From your accomplishments in academics, athletics and

the arts, you have left a tremendous legacy for the classes that will follow,” he said. “Life as you know it will change.

“Remember you are the agent of change in your own life. Change is inevitable, but the one thing that doesn’t change is the love of our Lord. With Christ’s love you can renew the face of the earth.”

He left the students with this warming quote from Dr. Seuss’ Oh the Places You’ll Go, “Congratulations, you’re off to great places, today is your day. Wherever you fly you will be the best, wherever you go, you will top the rest.”

2012 CARITAS

AWARD WINNER

The Caritas Award is one of the most significant awards presented to a graduating senior at Santa Margarita. The award recognizes a student who embodies all that is good about SMCHS and who best exemplifies the school charism of “Caritas Christi,” the love of Christ. The award is so fundamental to the school that the recipient, who is selected by the entire faculty, staff and administration, is recognized at graduation and sits on stage along with the valedictorian and salutatorian.

When the 2012 Caritas Award winner was announced at senior awards night, the students sprang from their chairs with boisterous applause as John McGrory ’12 accepted the award.

McGrory stood out amongst his peers for his gentle demeanor and his positive outlook on life. Not only was McGrory a standout on the football field and in the classroom, he was a standout in the eyes of his teachers and peers for his well-rounded nature. Admired for his positive attitude, many teachers commented on what a pleasure he was to be around on a daily basis.

There is no doubt in the minds of the SM family that the 2012 Caritas Award winner will carry on the legacy of this award in his days to come.

SENIOR CLASS OF 2012It is a Santa Margarita tradition for the senior class to gift something to the

school upon graduation. The Class of 2012 senior gift will leave a lasting impression for many years to come. Senior Class President Jameson Sansone and his fellow classmates had a desire to leave a significant message to the future graduates, faculty and staff… the message of “Caritas Christi.” The spirit of “Caritas Christi,” the love of Christ, is alive on the SMCHS campus and now the students have a permanent reminder of the school’s motto on the G Building.

ARIANNA HUNTER ’12 MAKES PERFECT

ATTENDANCE SEEM EASYWhat does it take to achieve four

years of perfect attendance and no demerits? For Arianna Hunter ’12 it took self-discipline, a strong work ethic and, as for the demerits, perhaps a little luck. Arianna, who has not missed a day of school since 5th grade, was recognized for her perfect attendance at the senior awards night last May. She now attends UCLA and plans to continue her perfect attendance record.

Did you strive not to be absent from school?Not especially. I tried to come to keep up with classes and not waste my parent’s money, but eventually I just got into a routine of it and it was never difficult for me to go. We are given all these amazing opportunities to excel and explore our talents here, why not use them to our advantage?

What kept you focused?Academics and education are very important to me and my family, so I

always strive to please them and myself by working as hard as I can. I feel better about myself when I succeed. I have very high standards and a very good work ethic.

Were there ever days you considered missing?Definitely! Like the last day of high school. Haha! But who could pass up a two hour long pool party?

Did your parents encourage you to not miss school?Yes, but they started when I was very young, so by the time I got to high school, they didn’t have to tell me anymore, I just knew what to do.

How did you manage to go through high school without any demerits?I got really good at blending with the crowd and dodging the deans when I happened to forget socks. Haha! No, I just followed the rules and never did anything outrageously deserving a detention.

Santa Margarita graduate Preston Spunt ’12 was awarded a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award for Washington University in St. Louis. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), a test that serves as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million entrants each year.

Spunt was an International Baccalaureate student who earned an IB diploma. He won numerous awards during his time in the Model United Nations program, in addition to receiving the coach’s award while a member of the track and field team. Spunt also participated in mock trial and was the president of the French National Honor Society. Spunt was the recipient of Campus Ministry’s “Heart to Heart Service Award” in recognition of his many hours of volunteer service at Saddleback Memorial Hospital. As a Washington University student, Spunt plans to major in biology and then plans to attend medical school.

In June 2012, the Orange County Register once again chose their list of “Grads Who Will Change the World” among the brightest, most motivated and selfless high school graduates from the Class of 2012.

Santa Margarita was proud that their very own, Steven Holcomb, was selected for this honor. The young philanthropist founded SM’s Ronald McDonald House Club. The club provides home-cooked meals to families utilizing the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at CHOC Children’s at Mission Hospital.

Holcomb first got involved with the Ronald McDonald House when he completed his Eagle Scout project, leading 16 scouts in refurbishing outdoor furniture to benefit families staying at the Orange facility. After seeing the importance of the nonprofit’s work, Holcomb wanted to continue to support the organization and began the school’s club.

The well-rounded student plans to continue his service work at college. Holcomb now attends the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studies mechanical engineering, especially as it applies to new medical technology. He plans to join the Navy after graduating from college.

Katie Fernelius valedictorian 4.84 GPA

Katie received academic honors including: Academic Award for Greek 2 Honors, Academic Award for English HL1 IB, Student-Advocate Award in Model United Nations, National Merit Commended Scholar, National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. Fernelius, the ASB Class Vice President, was as driven outside of the classroom. She was an active member of Mandala, Mock Trial and World Affairs Council of Orange County. However, Fernelius’ passion at SMCHS was Model United Nations. She was co-secretary-general of SOCOMUN XIX and SM Model United Nations program. She traveled to South Korea and China with the program. Fernelius stated, “I cannot even begin to articulate the impact that those trips had on my global perspective and the development of my passions.” Fernelius now attends Duke University as an Angier B. Duke Scholar.

Hayley Ritterhern valedictorian 4.84 GPa

Hayley received academic honors including: Biology Honors Course Award, Latin 2 and 3 Honors Course Award, Chemistry SL Course Award, Social Studies Department Award, US Government/MUN H Course Award, Richard Voelkel MUN Scholarship, National Merit Finalist, National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Honors for earning a score of three or more on at least four AP tests. Ritterhern states that her experiences at SMCHS are “as varied as I am.” In addition to her academics, Ritterhern was a very active student on campus participating in Model United Nations, the SM Ambassador program, NHS secretary, and JV golf team. Ritterhern now attends Stanford University, where she plans to major in biomedical engineering. Her dream is to design complex prosthetics and wire them right into the brain to give people the chance to have a working limb that behaves just like a regular human one.

Jessica Hickey salutatorian 4.8 GPa

Jessica received academic honors including: AP Scholar with Honors, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and University Scholar Recipient. Hickey credits her balance of academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities and a social life to her success at SMCHS; she strived for balance in her high school life. She was active on campus as a member of the lacrosse team, Link crew leader, a student ambassador, president of National Honor Society, ArchaeoSpain (an archaeology program) and a dedicated volunteer in the San Francisco Solano Faith Formation program. Hickey now attends the University of Chicago. She is still undecided in her major because she finds “everything so interesting.”

Elizabeth Zarka salutatorian 4.8 GPA

Elizabeth received academic honors including: AP Scholar Award, National Honor Society, Girls JV Gold Golf Scholar Athlete Award (sophomore, junior and senior year), SMCHS Girls Frosh/Soph Soccer Scholar Athlete Award (freshman year), won 20 award distinctions in Model United Nations including five Best Delegate awards and awarded Best Delegate in a 200 delegate committee in BEIMUN conference in Beijing, China. Zarka believes she found her passion while a student at SMCHS and credits the biology classes she took. She will pursue her passion of medicine while a student at University of California at Berkeley. She would like to enter the field of public health after attending medical school. Her ultimate goal is to serve as a member of the World Health Organization.

TWO-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD

MEDALIST AMY RODRIGUEZ ’05

What does a two-time Olympic gold medalist dream about… a three-peat! After competing and taking the top honor in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2012 London Olympic Games, Amy Rodriguez ’05 is not yet ready to retire. The nation’s top 2005 recruit, Rodriguez was the 2005 Gatorade National Player of the Year and named National Player of the Year by Parade Magazine, EA Sports and NSCAA after scoring 17 goals in 15 games for SMCHS as a senior. A few of her high school honors and accolades included Orange County Register Player of the Year and Girls Soccer Player of the Year, Los Angeles Times’ Girls Soccer Player of the Year, a four-time all-league selection and all-CIF honoree.

A-Rod, Rodriguez’s nickname on the field, then attended the University of Southern California playing for the Trojan’s women’s soccer team from 2005 through 2008 and majored in psychology. As a junior in 2007, Rodriguez led the Trojans to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.

Her Olympic reign began in 2008 when she competed with the world watching at the Beijing Olympics, where she scored against New Zealand. Rodriguez provided the assist on Carli Lloyd’s game-winning goal in the first period of extra time in the gold medal match to clinch the title. In 2012, Rodriguez played 32 minutes in four matches and received her second Olympic gold medal.

Rodriguez was married on October 8, 2011 to Adam Shilling, her college sweetheart. The two met in 2006 while both were attending USC.

We recently caught up with the busy Olympian.

What are you doing now?   Still playing soccer! My team and I will be touring the country celebrating our Olympic gold medal. The tour began on September 1st in Rochester, NY.

What does it feel like to be a two time gold medalist?   It was amazing to be a part of the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Now I can say that I am a two-time gold medalist, and the feeling is so surreal. I am so fortunate and proud to have the opportunity to represent the USA.

What kind of training do you do to keep in Olympic shape?  It takes a lot of hard work in order to keep in shape.  I do a lot of running, weight lifting, agility drills and soccer training.

What do you see in your future—another Olympics? Family? Coaching? I would love to try for another shot at the 2016 Olympics. I’m not ready to hang my cleats up yet, and looking forward to playing professional soccer for a little while longer. No family or coaching plans as of now, but definitely hope to see both of those in my future.

Did anything you learned at SM stick with you over the years?  I have learned that faith and family are the two most important things in life. Soccer is a huge part of me, but without the strength of my faith and the support of my family, I would not be who I am today.

AN OLYMPIAN ON CAMPUSDana Schoenfield Reyes is a freshman counselor at Santa

Margarita, but back in 1972 she was swimming her way to an Olympic silver medal. Reyes competed in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, in the 200-meter breaststroke swim. She finished second, and received a silver medal with a time of 2:42.03, breaking the existing Olympic record for that race.

“Personally, I had the challenge of competing for the first time with the premier breaststroker in the world, Galina Stepanova of Russia. Nothing like meeting your hero just before climbing up the starting blocks to race against her!”

What a spectacular year that was capped off with a fourth place finish in the 800 meter finals at the United States Olympic Trials. The two-time All-American was one of the youngest runners in the race and narrowly missed a berth to the London Olympic Games.

At SMCHS, Martin was a State Runner-up, two-time CIF Champion, Orange County and League Champion. He is one of the most accomplished high school athletes to come through the boys’ track and field program.

What is the best thing to come from your Olympic Trials experience?First, it set up a sponsorship with ASICS America. Secondly, a great thing to come from my Trials experience was the experience itself. It was one of the largest stages I had run on in my life. There were major pressures and expectations that were put on a national stage.

Since the Olympic Trials, what have you been doing?I raced four times, three times in Belgium and once in Italy. It was an experience I will take with me forever, as I will use these experiences for future races in Europe. I was like a freshman again, learning the ropes of the European track circuit. I spent roughly three weeks overseas then headed home for some well-deserved rest.

What is your plan for the next few years?My main goal for the next four years is one that I have had for a long time, to be an Olympian and represent the U.S. The plan to reach that goal is a simple one, lots of hard work and running a lot of miles! In the future, I will be training in Orange County while being coached by Pete Dolan, the head coach at UCSB. There are two IAAF World Championships between now and the 2016 Olympic Games, one in 2013 in Moscow and the other in 2015 in Beijing.

TALKS MARATHONS & BEYOND

“Surreal,” a word that Allison still uses to describe her experience after winning the 6th Annual Eugene Marathon in April 2012. She crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:53:07 and realized her dream came true!

We recently caught up with the busy mom of two; she and her husband, Griffin, are parents to three-year-old son, Blaise and one-year-old daughter, Victoria. We asked her about “surreal” marathon experience and future running goals.

When did you start participating in marathons and how many have you competed/won?I ran middle distance as a walk-on at Notre Dame and always had a goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. That meant I’d run one race to qualify, then Boston itself. I never considered myself a long distance runner. My first marathon was in 2005, and not only did I qualify for Boston, but I got bit by the marathon bug! I ran the Boston Marathon the next spring, and three more after that, including the Mumbai Marathon in which I represented the U.S. My most recent race was my victory in Eugene in April 2012.

What’s in your future?Qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials at the marathon distance. I’d like to hit the track circuit again and see if I can set some personal records at my favorite middle distances and eventually compete at the World Master’s level. Before any of that training, I’m expecting my third baby in January and running during pregnancy and the postpartum period is no walk in the park (although sometimes that’s exactly what it is). It will be a long road back to those levels of competition.

What are your fondest memories of Santa Margarita?Winning Seaview League Championships in track, CIF in cross country, Mrs. Smith’s calculus class and Kairos.

Santa Margarita Catholic High School welcomed 20 new international students this year, bringing the total number to 32 for the 2012-2013 school year. Our international students span from all corners of the globe including Brazil, Mexico, Serbia, China, Korea and Spain. Many of these students live with Santa Margarita host families and have become involved with various sports and activities such as basketball, water polo, swimming, soccer, cross country and MUN. Santa Margarita is thrilled to have them with us and we are sure that all of our students will show them why “It’s a great day to be an Eagle!”

This past summer, nine IB Full Diploma candidates from the classes of 2013 and 2014 participated in the IB World Student Conference in Segovia, Spain.

The week-long conference, held at the IE University in Segovia, included research, workshops, guest speakers, group brainstorming sessions and presentations to the social entrepreneurship conference board. The SMCHS students worked together with 250 other IB students from around the world to create a social entrepreneurship project. Their goal was to form an innovative action plan to help solve some of today’s most pressing problems in society.

However, the July conference was not all work and no play. Each night, students experienced cultures from around the world as they danced,

sang, ate and socialized with the other students attending. Karaoke night, salsa night and talent night were just a few of the many activities the students took part in after hours of hard work at the conference. Students were also able to explore the city of Segovia and learn about the culture and architecture that surrounds the city.

IB Coordinator Lyn Alexander, who attended the conference with the students, said she was grateful Santa Margarita students had the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.

“I enjoyed watching our students interact with each other outside the parameters of the school environment,” she said. “I hope that our students realize the incredible opportunity they had to interact with their peers across the globe—all 250 of them!”

or the first time, SMCHS is excited to offer blended online classes to current seniors. For

the 148 seniors enrolled in one of the three classes offered, they will experience a new, more immersive way of learning that will better prepare them for what they will experience in their college and career life. Director of Assessment and Online Learning Sean Basford states, “today’s students need a unique set of ‘21st century skills’ to thrive in the global economy; online learning has been demonstrated to develop these 21st century skills.”

Another added benefit to enrolling in one of the online classes is the flexibility that comes with it. Students are able to choose when they spend time working on course material, can review material as often as they like, go at their own pace, and, perhaps most importantly to the students, they get to start later in the morning.

The extra hour in the morning is one benefit that senior Jennifer Donegan is definitely excited about. Jennifer is taking the international trends and cinema course led by Mr. Corey Lindabury. As with the other two online courses currently offered, Religion 4 and English 4, Jennifer’s online class is held during the static zero period of the school schedule. Each class is set up a bit differently depending on the teacher, but all of the courses are a blended class, which requires that the students meet with the teacher at least once a week.

For Jennifer, she typically comes in to meet with Mr. Lindabury and the rest of her course mates on Monday to go over new material and assignments for the week ahead. Then, for the rest of the week, she logs into the student Learning Portal to view videos, lectures and complete assignments. While Jennifer admits that signing up for the online class may have initially been “all about the sleep” she is excited to be learning how to handle an online class, something her brother Sean Donegan ’12 is now experiencing at The University of Alabama, where several of his courses require assignments to be completed online.

Santa Margarita is constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of education offered and prepare students for college. “We are always preparing our students for the future, whatever it may bring, so we are very proud to be able to offer blended online learning as an added option and to say that our program delivers SMCHS curriculum taught by SMCHS faculty,” says Basford. “Blended online learning is a program where students learn in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path and pace and part in a supervised in class face-to-face environment on campus.”

As the future of online learning continues to expand, SM can proudly say that we are continuing to grow and learn as well.

Santa Margarita Catholic High School was ranked number 21 in the nation for private schools in the Washington Post’s Challenge Index as of June 2012.

The rankings are based on the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. The Challenge Index measures how effectively a school prepares its students for college, according to the Post. This is the first year Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews included a sampling of the nation’s top private schools in the rankings.

Mathews and Post Researcher Bonnie Smith canvassed schools across the nation for data used to assemble the rankings. SMCHS was the only Catholic high school in Orange County to appear on the list.

There is no magic number for our enrollment target. In planning conversations, we use the figure 1,700 to guide our discussion because our approved master-plan references this student number. We know that our school had over 1,800 students in the mid-1990s and as the graph below indicates there are enrollment cycles that may take our student population closer to 1,500 students. The key to sustainable enrollment in support of our mission is developing and retaining the best teachers for our students. Our current faculty to student ratio is 16:1 and our families can be confident that this figure is a key barometer to any measure of success we consider in our planning process for the future.

ENROLLMENT YEAR OVER YEAR COMPARISON

The Santa Margarita Catholic High School story as told from our financial statements is one of sustainable enrollment and a mission-based allocation of resources. A year to year comparison of cost centers shows a continued emphasis on classroom learning (4.7% and 2.9% increase in instruction and instructional support) and a 13.9% increase in campus ministry resources.

Upon first review the 15.1% increase in administration is excessive, but a closer inspection of the administrative costs show

that over half of this increase is attributed to new personnel in information technology and increases in school admissions, marketing and public relations expenses. We did not expect that with the addition of our 15,000 square foot Academic Service Center that our facilities management costs would actually decrease. It is a strong indication that our energy conservation measures are working and that we have increased the productivity of both our staff and outside vendors.

his past summer, the Santa Margarita choir had the experience of a lifetime; they

were asked to travel to Italy for a series of concerts and performances. Students from all three choirs (intermediate choir, advanced women’s choir and chamber singers) visited Rome, Florence and Venice as part of their international tour.

The singers first visited Rome, where they saw the Vatican Museums, the Roman Colosseum, the Ancient Roman Forum and the Sistine Chapel. Unfortunately, they were unable to arrange a formal performance in the Sistine Chapel, but they did manage to quickly arrange a “flash mob” where they sang Locus Iste, which translates to “This place is Holy.”  The spontaneous performance was a huge hit with all of the guards and visitors.

Following that event, they had their first official performance, which was singing for Mass at the beautiful St. Peter’s Basilica. It was an emotional and surreal experience for all.

“I couldn’t have felt more humbled,” said Choir Director Francisco Calvo.  “I

remember conducting Tomas Tallis’ ‘If Ye Love Me’ during Mass and thinking thank you God for this moment. Thank you for my students.” 

Other performances included concerts at Sant’Agnese in Agone, Rome, the Cenacolo di Basilica Santa Croce in Florence and the Chiesa di San Moise in Venice. Every performance drew in 100 or more audience members and the Eagles’ voices were as spectacular as the venues they were performing in.

The tour was dedicated to the singing of Sacred Music in the most sacred of spaces and every venue contained beautiful artwork - frescos, paintings, sculptures, etc. The students were shocked to be singing in such extravagant and stunning venues.

“I hope that the experience deepened their (the students) faith and helped them realize that music and art are essential to our faith and our lives,” said Calvo. “I hope the students made connections - personal, intellectual and artistic.”

The tour was such a huge success, Calvo hopes to do an international tour with the choir every four years.

The Arts Alliance is a new parent led organization formed in September 2011 to support the Performing Arts Department and foster an alliance with our faculty, administrators and community. We are not a booster club. The Arts Alliance is building the foundation for the future of the arts at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

On Sunday May 27th, the 42nd Annual M.A.C.Y. Awards were held at Segertstrom Center for the Arts. The M.A.C.Y. awards were founded by Lee and John Childress to honor outstanding work in high school theatre. Santa Margarita’s spring musical, Les Miserables, directed by Amy Luskey-Barth with musical direction by Francisco Calvo and choreography by Courtney Burfeind, garnered 24 individual and show awards. Les Mis won the M.A.C.Y. Award for Literature Brought to Life for “a musical production based on a classic piece of literature that is a triple threat. A show with marvelous voices, acting and inventive staging.”

Top honors for Best Dramatic Actor went to senior Grant Yosenick for his role as Jean Valjean. Kelly Christensen won Best Female Vocalist.

Highest Achievement Awards were given to: JP Jennings as Javert, Daniel Velasquez as Marius, Alexandra Rupp as Cosette, Grant Yosenick as Vajean and Kelly Christensen as Fantine. Outstanding Achievement: Carrie Dubeau as Eponine, Keenan Herdeg as Enjolras, Madison Schlegel as Madame Thenardier and T.J. Yacap as Thenardier. Achievement Awards: Carson Preusse as Gavroche, Mary Claire Ramirez as Little Cosette, Nicholas Rule as Grantaire, Eric Lencioni as Feuilly, Tyler Cotner as Combeferre and Ruthie Flynn as Babet. Special Recognition was awarded to Veronique Poutre. Bright Spot Awards were presented to Jennifer Bishop, Luke Herdeg and JeanneAnn Faris for their work in the ensemble.

Senior Daniel Velasquez was awarded the Blare Scholarship to further his theatre studies in college. The cast of Les Miserables performed a four-minute medley of the show to cheers from the audience. Thirty-three schools were judged by a panel of theatre professionals over the course of the 2011-12 school year.

Proving that age is just a number, Beau Hossler ’13 impressed a nation with his confidence and his steady play in back to back tournaments, the U.S. Open and AT&T National.

Beau Hossler made the U.S. Open Championship for the first time as a wide-eyed 16-year-old sophomore in 2011, playing amongst the best golfers in the world. He didn’t make the cut that year shooting 76 and 77 in the first two rounds at Congressional, but it served as a platform to gain experience, rub elbows with some of his idols and it gave the media a sidebar for their features. 2012 proved to be different for Hossler.

After leading the SMCHS golf team to a CIF championship in May,

Hossler turned his attention to the pro tour as he took his second crack at the U.S. Open, subsequently earning an invitation to play in the AT&T National.

Physically, Hossler morphed into a different person than the kid people saw at Congressional in 2011. After the first round at the U.S. Open, the young star found himself in the hunt, shooting an even par of 70. That gave Hossler fans everywhere something to cheer about. In the second round, the Texas-bound junior found himself at the top of the leaderboard at -2, ahead of the likes of Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell. Hossler would finish the second round with a 73, and

earned the titles of U.S. Lacrosse High School All-American, Orange County Register Player of the Year, Trinity League Champion and Trinity League Offensive Player of the Year.

In addition to her success on the field, she achieved many academic accolades including an outstanding 4.57 GPA, AP Scholar and membership in the National Honor Society. Her greatest

academic achievement of all came junior year, when she committed to Stanford University.

Before she graduated, we had a chance to speak with Adrienne.

What was your favorite part about Santa Margarita? I’ve had so many great memories here; lunchtime with friends, Mrs. Villa’s Biology HL 2 class, Mr. Dunne’s AP Government class, Mr. Trotter, Friday nights at football games and simply being a part of the SM family.

What has Santa Margarita offered that you will carry with you in the future?SM provided a competitive, yet faith-filled environment that enabled me to learn to balance my time between being successful in school and athletics, while

treating other people as I would like to be treated. I was challenged to make choices and set priorities, but not at the expense of my Catholic faith or the respect of my teachers and classmates.

What are you most looking forward to at Stanford University?I’m looking forward to the challenge of living away from the “nest” and trying to continue to balance more challenging academics and athletics in an environment filled with super bright people and extremely competitive athletes.

What is your proudest accomplishment that you achieved at SM? I’m most proud of being able to achieve success on and off the field through hard work and determination. I feel the work ethic and enthusiasm I showed in practice and in games allowed me to be a good role model for some of my younger teammates; and now if those girls will “pay it forward” by doing the same thing, maybe I helped create something positive and lasting.

bounced back in the third round with another even par of 70. After a solid third round, Hossler could be found on live TV, being interviewed by Bob Costas and compelling Rick Reilly to tweet: “At 17, I was trying to put the chain back on my bike. At 17, Beau Hossler is leading the Open.”

As Tiger Woods slipped further down the leaderboard, Hossler became the talk of the Open and developed a raucous cheering section in the gallery at Olympic, where he heard requests to the prom and ‘Hook ‘em, Horns’ constantly. A 17-year-old that just finished his finals found himself in contention to win the U.S. Open through three rounds on a course that gave an early exit to Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald. Despite a final round of 76, he finished the tournament tied for 29th place. The Cinderella story that was adding to golf history had friends, family and perfect strangers pulling for the SM junior who at one point led the 112th U.S. Open.

After his success at the Open, Hossler found out that he received a sponsor exemption invitation to play in the AT&T National in Bethesda, Maryland. Hossler was one of only two amateurs in the field, including his future teammate Jordan Spieth of Texas. Who invited Hossler to play? The eventual winner, a guy named Tiger Woods.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that we will be watching Hossler for years to come, even after he grows out of his SMCHS golf bag.

Last spring, Kaitlyn Merritt ’15 vaulted 13’03” to set a new freshman national pole vault record while claiming League, County and CIF championship titles in the process.

Merritt was the lone ninth grader in the field at the Division III CIF Championships in Walnut, CA and was one of only two freshman girls to compete amongst all four divisions in the pole vault. Merritt went into the competition with the hopes of winning a CIF title and in doing so, came home with a new national class record.

Merritt’s calm, yet confident demeanor on the track would lead you to believe that she is a seasoned veteran, but this outstanding athlete proved age is but a number as she stepped up to the plate. Merritt’s clearance of 13’03” gave her a national freshman record, an individual CIF championship and gave her the third best vault of all high school athletes in the nation. In addition

to her national record, Merritt’s success on the runway earned her the Trinity League Championship, Orange County Championship and solidified her spot in the record books with the second best mark in Orange County history. Her success also garnered her athlete of the week honors by The Orange County Register.

In addition to her vaulting, Merritt was vital to the success of both relay teams (4x100 & 4x400) for the lady Eagles, having run the fastest 400 by any Eagle in the 2012 season when she opened up the 1600 meter relay at CIF Finals in a speedy 56.7.

Merritt’s success on the track comes in a close second to her success in the classroom, where she balances a steady dose of honors classes and boasts a 4.57 GPA. Merritt will be the anchor of the Eagles track team over the next three years and we look forward to seeing her in the 2013 season.

katy daLy Girls Volleyball

Daly has been a health and fitness teacher at SMCHS since 2007 and has also taught cultural geography. Before joining the SM staff, Daly previously served as a head coach with the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club, where her teams have been nationally-recognized. In 2001, Daly was named the CIF-Southern Section Division I Player of the Year after helping lead her high school team to a CIF championship.

BRad RePPeRt Boys Lacrosse

Reppert steps into the head coach position after previously working as an assistant coach at SMCHS for the past two seasons. He brings an extensive lacrosse background including a professional career, most recently with the Los Angeles Riptide in 2007. He also played for the San Francisco Dragons in 2006 and the Anaheim Storm in 2004.

sean zeitLeR ’01 Boys Track and Field and Cross Country

As a Santa Margarita alumnus, Zeitler is set to take over the head coach position previously held by his father. As a high school athlete, Sean competed on the SMCHS track team from 1998 – 2001. He was captain of the team in 2000 and 2001 and helped lead the Eagles to their only Orange County championship, while also earning several CIF individual and relay championships.

With six state championships, 46 CIF championships and 166 league championships in the school’s history, Santa Margarita is honored to have such dedicated coaches who have helped our student-athletes become champions over the years. This school year the Santa Margarita family is happy to welcome five new head coaches to the Eagles’ nest. We look forward to watching them share their knowledge and talents with their student-athletes.

JeFF ReineRt Boys Basketball

Having served as a college coach for 24 years, Reinert brings extensive experience to the Eagle basketball program. Reinert played basketball and graduated from Gonzaga University in 1985. After college he went to Australia to play professionally.Most recently he worked as an associate head coach at Fresno State University, co-head assistant coach at Oregon State University and head coach at Utah Valley University.

Justin deBLasio ’97 Boys Volleyball

Fifteen years ago, DeBlasio was playing for the SMCHS volleyball team. He led the Eagles to one of their three Southern Section titles during his senior year. Following his high school and college careers, he continued in the sport serving as president and director of the 949 Volleyball Club in San Clemente and as a coach at San Juan Hills High School for the 2011 season.

anta Margarita sports teams had an outstanding 2011-2012 season with one regional championship,

two CIF championships, and two state championships emerging from several programs. Both our athletes and coaches deserve a huge congratulation for their accomplishments. One coach in particular led both of his programs to championship wins. Coach Chuck Morales led the girls soccer team to their first ever CIF regional championship and the boys golf team to yet another CIF championship.

With eight CIF championships during his SMCHS career, Coach Morales continues to find success with each new season of athletes. From two-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Rodriguez ’05 to U.S. Open Championship breakout star Beau Hossler ’13, Coach Morales has helped shape some of SM’s best athletes. A dedicated and respected coach of almost 20 years, Santa Margarita is extremely grateful to have him in the Eagle family.

We recently caught up with Coach Morales to talk about the success of last year’s teams, his stand out moments and his thoughts on the upcoming seasons.

How long have you been coaching at SM and where did you coach before that? I was appointed as the SMCHS girls soccer coach in June 1994 and prior to that, I was a club soccer coach. I have been coaching club soccer for over 30 years. I’m also entering my 10th season as the boys golf coach.

How would you summarize your 2011-2012 athletic year, with the success of both the girls’ soccer team and the boys’ golf team? The girls’ soccer team was very energetic and technical this past season. We met and exceeded many challenges. We had many underclass players on the team and this coming 2012 season looks like it will be one of our best ever with so many returning veterans. Boys’ golf was also successful due to the efforts of two golfers, Beau Hossler and Andrew Levitt. They helped carve out a unique standing for our program that ultimately led to our capturing the CIF boys golf title this past season.

What stands out to you the most about last school year, what will stay with say, 10 years down the road?Our girls’ soccer CIF semi-final against Aliso Niguel was a very physical game. Our girls endured lot of physical challenges and still managed to hold the opponent scoreless

going into penalty kicks. It was a bruising game for our girls. In golf, Beau Hossler came up huge all season. As evidenced by his scoring average, Beau would make shots when he needed them. He also had a great showing at the U.S. Open Championship, where he was the leader for a while.

Finally, how do you approach next year to get your teams to emulate the success from last year? What are your hopes and goals for your programs for the upcoming season?The boys’ golf team and girls’ soccer team will have to work very hard to not become overconfident. We cannot rest on our laurels because other schools will be very willing to knock us off. As for the upcoming season, we have always had a long-term plan to establish legitimate programs in both golf and soccer and spotlight our student-athletes in the process. This will help us to be successful in every way and attract future Eagles as well.

More than 140 classmates from the Class of 1992 celebrated their 20 year reunion on July 14, 2012 at the El Adobe Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. Alumni Julia Jones Bogosian, Michael Maruca, Patty Scheppach and Jennifer Walsh put together an unbelievable evening filled with fun, laughter and many memories. The former Eagles were also joined by present and past SM faculty.

Guests enjoyed music by OC DJ Company (Maruca’s company) and the famous DJ Richard Blade of KROQ. They dined on traditional Mexican food and were treated to some special cupcake delights. The evening also included a photo booth, many wonderful raffle prizes and a stroll down memory lane! Upon leaving, guests received a “Sweet Shoppe Candy Store” goodie bag along with a fresh baked loaf of bread courtesy of John Galasso ’92 and Galasso Bakeries.

The Class of 1992 gifted the alumni office a group photo signed by those who were in attendance as a lasting memory of their 20 year celebration.

A L U M N I S N A P S H O T SMore Than $10,000 Raised at Annual Memorial Run

More than 150 runners participated in the 4th Annual Sarah DeMille Memorial Run on July 21, 2012. The runners raced around the trails surrounding SMCHS in support of the Sarah DeMille Scholarship Fund.

The 5K run kicked off early with a high school run, general 5K and a “Future Eagles” fun-run for kids aged 10 and under. The race was followed by a wonderful pancake breakfast and prize presentation on the track.

The winner of the general run was Mike Powers ’03 with a time of 16:52.1. He was closely followed by SM senior Jason Engel ’13 with a time of 16:52.2.

The Sarah DeMille Memorial Run is held in memory of Sarah DeMille ’05 who passed away in 2006 in an auto accident while attending Northern Arizona University. Sarah had a special spirit that was contagious and showed her dedication and beliefs in hard work and commitment in everything she did. The scholarship is awarded each year to a Lady Runner who possesses the same qualities as Sarah.

This year’s race was able to help secureover$10,000forthescholarshipfund. The fund was started by Applied Medical in 2009. During her time there as an intern, Sarah’s spirit was evident and they started the fund in her memory.

Class of 2007 Celebrates Five Year Reunion

More than 75 classmates from the Class of 2007 celebrated their five year reunion on June 30, 2012 at Dave & Buster’s in Irvine. The event was the first of many future reunions for the young alumni since leaving the nest.

The former Eagles enjoyed reconnecting, socializing and dancing with one another at Dave & Buster’s. A fun time was had by all the graduates; they are looking forward to the next reunion!

Reunion Brings the Class of 2002 Together Again

The Class of 2002 reunited on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Balboa Yacht Club to celebrate their 10-year reunion. Class of 2002 committee chairs Chris Ferraro, Katie McCurdy, Jenna Scherman and Lance Vargas did a great job of gathering friends together to celebrate. More than 130 classmates enjoyed the beautiful sunset while reconnecting with old friends and sharing memories. The night included a time of remembrance for Bradley Dillahunty, a delicious dinner, music and fellowship.

The third annual “3 on 3 for Joey” basketball tournament was held on May 26, 2012 at Santa Margarita Catholic High School and St. John’s Episcopal School. The tournament is held in memory of Joey Campbell ’00. Joey played basketball for three years at SMCHS. It was the game of basketball that allowed him to become a leader and a friend to his teammates.

The annual tournament raises funds as a tribute to Joey’s life and a source of benefit to others. Proceeds raised from the tournament go directly to families in crisis, whether it is a family who has lost a loved one and needs to cover funeral costs or a family struck by sudden

Morgan Moody ’92 Performs at Salzburg FestivalMorgan Moody ’92, professional opera singer for the Dortmund

Opera Company in Germany spent five weeks this past July and August performing at the Salzburg Festival. Moody performed in Zimmerman’s Opera “Die Soldaten” where he played the role of Captain Mary. Long time faculty member and proud mother, Meredith Moody, joined by daughters, Travis Moody Azous ’93 and Tracy Moody Skenandore ’96, traveled to Salzburg to see Morgan perform at the festival. The family enjoyed the black-tie opening night performance. Moody recently moved from his longtime membership with the Zurich Opera Company to the Dortmund Opera Company.

More than 40 teams, both adult and youth divisions, participated in the 2012 tournament. Games included a 3-point shooting contest in which K.C. Uhler ’03 was the winner. Team SV Hoops lead by Mark Baldwin and Team Lebron lead by Brett Chamberlain ’06 were division winners. Recently signed New York Knicks player Mychel Thompson ’06 and Golden State Warriors player Klay Thompson ’08 came to support the event as well. The event raised more than $14,000forthecause.

Matthew Rinn ’91 is currently running for city council in Pleasant Hill, CA. Matt, his wife Ashley and daughters reside in Pleasant Hill where Matt is a business owner and president of the Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce. He was honored as the 2011 Pleasant Hill Business Person of the Year.

94After graduating from SMCHS, Major Paul Ferguson ’94, immediately sought and earned a military commission via the United States Air Force Academy. Paul is still on active duty today. His service has taken him from New Zealand to Antarctica, from Kuwait to Iraq and from Afghanistan to almost every corner of the United States. Today, he is serving at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, preparing to begin a year of studies at the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.

Dr. Mike Moodian ’94 was honored as one of OC METRO Magazine’s annual “40 Under 40 List” in 2010. Dr. Moodian is an author and assistant professor of social science at Brandman University located in Irvine, CA. Dr. Moodian has released two books: one in 2009, “Contemporary Leadership and Intercultural Competence” and the second in 2010, “Images of America: Rancho Santa Margarita.” He is a candidate for the South Orange County Community College District board of trustees. He was also recently named chairman of the World Affairs Council of Orange County.

Patrick B. Strader, Esq. ’94, was named to OC METRO Magazine’s annual “40 Under 40 List” in 2012. Each year, OC METRO Magazine, selects a group of young professionals who have proven that they have what it takes to make a difference in Orange County through passion, enthusiasm and drive. Patrick is a lawyer at his firm, CEO of real estate development firm Starpointe

Ventures, and the lead entitlement consultant to FivePoint Communities, managing developer of the former MCAS El Toro, now the Orange County Great Park and Great Park Neighborhoods. Last year, Patrick led an entitlement effort in the city of Irvine that mapped and vested 4,894 residential units and 1.2 million square feet of commercial space at the former base.

96Margi (Blash) Filipovitch ’96 married Nick on October 8, 2011 in Rancho Santa Fe, CA in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by family and friends.

High school sweethearts, Brian Meihaus ’96 and Megan (Strader) Meihaus ’97 have been happily married for eight years and live in Aliso Viejo with their two redheaded children. Erin is four-years-old and loves going to preschool where kendra (Way) Tatala ’97 is her teacher! Sean is 15-months-old and is a happy and sweet boy. Megan works in Regional Development for

the University of Notre Dame, her other alma mater, after spending five wonderful years as director of advancement for SMCHS. Brian works in commercial real estate for Shea Properties and recently earned his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Business. Both Megan and Brian are proud Eagle alumni and hope that someday their children will also have the opportunity to attend SMCHS.

97Heather (Smith) Eggers ’97 and husband Fabio are the proud parents of Ellie Joy Eggers. Ellie was born on February 13, 2012. She was 8 pounds, 12 ounces and was born at 6:21 p.m.

kelley (O’Halloran) Stratton ’97 and husband Paul welcomed their first child, Oliver Dennis Stratton, on September 17, 2011. Kelley is working as an interior designer in Seattle and recently launched Salt Interiors (saltinteriors.com), an internet based interior design service, which allows Kelley to work with clients nationwide.

Marianne (Scheil) Jewell ’97 welcomed a baby boy named Chaz on December 10, 2010. He weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces.

Mike Murray ’97 was commissioned in the California Army National Guard this past summer as an Officer. Mike is currently a 2nd Lieutenant and the Platoon Leader of a Light Infantry Rifle Platoon and attached to Alpha Company with the 184th Light Infantry Regiment. Mike resides in Aliso Viejo with girlfriend Allison, boxer Rooney and cat Hobbes.

98Emmeline (Martin) Jennings ’98, husband Jake and big brother Jacob welcomed the birth of Tanner Ray on September 13, 2010. Emmeline and family live in Fresno where she works as the administrative assistant to the activities director for Clovis West High School and class advisor for the class of 2015. In June, she celebrated her 15th year working for United Spirit Association and continues to be a part of their development team. Emmeline was recently named spirit program director for California State University, Fresno where she will be responsible for all coaching staff for cheerleaders, dance team and mascot sports and all fundraising. Emmeline is excited to be working for her college alma mater.

Danielle (Deblieux) McConnell ’98 married Brian on October 29, 2011 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church followed by a reception at Sea Cliff Country Club, both located in Huntington Beach. Eagle alumni in the wedding party included kyndell (Gaglio) Paine ’98, Lisa kahle ’98, Nicole Batard ’98, katie Fenelli ’98 and Nicole Deblieux ’03. Many other SMCHS alumni were in attendance as well. Danielle works for the Disneyland Resort as a manager in global documentation and Brian is a manager for Sand Canyon Corporation in Irvine. The happy couple resides in Anaheim.

Elisa (Huefner) king ’98 and her husband Jeremy were surprised with a beautiful baby boy on March 16, 2012. Grayden “Grady” Evan King was born at 5:54 p.m., weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces and 22 inches long. Grady joins big sister Scarlett, who is 22-months-old, and very enamored with her new little brother.

00Lisa (Gantz) Farnan ’00 works in the Department of Development & Communications at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. She works on various initiatives and events that raise money to fund groundbreaking research to find cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s and other advances in molecular biology. Lisa credits her time at SMCHS with cultivating a strong desire to pursue a career aligned with making the community and world better, which led her to pursue nonprofit work. She is very grateful for the extraordinary teachers that she had at SMCHS that nurtured her talents, challenged her, raised her social consciousness and taught her to strive for success.

kristin Lynch ’01 graduated from Princeton University in 2005. While a student at SMCHS and at Princeton, she played basketball. Post college, Kristin became a Division III basketball coach. Kristin worked for several years in Colorado and now lives in Cambodia working as a reporter with the Phnom Penh Post.

Bridget McEvoy-Hein ’01 and Brad Genovese ’03 graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine on May 19, 2012, earning their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees. Many SMCHS alumni were in attendance at the graduation ceremony including Jeff “Station” McEvoy-Hein ’99, Meghan McEvoy-Hein ’03, Megan (Genovese) Acosta ’01, April Agostini ’03, kenny Jones ’03 and Darryl Reames ’03. During their four years in New Orleans, Bridget and Brad had a great time hanging out together, from studying for anatomy and USMLE exams to enjoying Mardi Gras festivities. Bridget and her fiancé, also a Tulane MD graduate ’12, have relocated to Cambridge, MA where Bridget will complete her preliminary internal medicine year at Saint Vincent Hospital then continue her anesthesiology residency at Boston University Medical Center. Brad and his fiancée, April Agostini ’03, have relocated to Los Angeles where he will complete his general surgery residency at UCLA Medical Center while April earns her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at Azusa Pacific University.

Nicole returned to Orange County after receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and master’s degree in counseling from Santa Clara University. Utilizing her education, her passion for creative design and her love for all things sweet, Nicole started her own baking company, Sweet Offerings Bakery. Nicole runs the baking company with her mother-in-law, Katie Lamming. Baking from scratch with quality ingredients and lots of love, they provide cakes, cupcakes and other assorted sweets that are custom designed. Their ultimate goal is to glorify God by using their sweets to bring joy and blessings to others. Michelle Hull ’04 graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in government in 2008. She then attended Columbia University School of Law where she received her Juris Doctor as a James Kent Scholar in 2011. Michelle was sworn into the California Bar in December 2011. She is currently an associate in the Los Angeles office of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker.

05Matt Gotschall ’05 has been performing throughout California in a rock band, Electric Soul Parade, as a bassist and backup vocalist. In June, his band played at the House of Blues Anaheim. This past year’s performances include the House of Blues Sunset Strip, The Wiltern in Los Angeles and Orange County’s Coach House. The first full-length album will debut this fall. Jessie Dax-Setkus ’05 married Algis on June 3, 2011. The couple met while studying abroad in Europe. Jessie is currently working in advertising at Wunderman West in Irvine. The happy couple now lives in Newport Beach.

Sean Aldridge ’05 lives and works in Gulu, Uganda. He is the production manager at Krochet Kids International where he manages over 150 beneficiaries in KKi’s Uganda program. Krochet Kids International is a non-profit built around the foundations of love. The foundation’s mission is to empower women in the war torn region of Northern Uganda to rise up out of poverty with the art of crochet. The women are taught to crochet hats that are then sold in the United States. Thomas Hull ’06 graduated from Harvard University with a biology degree in 2010. While at Harvard, Thomas was a varsity football starter earning two Ivy League championships. Since returning to Orange County, he has been coaching junior varsity football at Our Lady of Fatima as well as leading its youth group. He is currently preparing for the Medical College Admission Test while working in two emergency rooms in Orange County.

Cami (Poblete) Donahue ’06 married Erik on September 24, 2011 at the Dove Canyon Country Club. Cami has special memories of Dove Canyon since she spent a lot of her time on the golf course there with the golf team while a student at SMCHS.

Alex Graniere ’07 graduated from UC Santa Barbara and now works for DeLoitte in Los Angeles. Alex’s new job finds him traveling to many cities.

09Allee Campbell ’09 recently launched a new social network, www.camoconnect.com, as a way for military families to stay connected with loved ones that are deployed overseas, serving our country. Allee created the website after meeting her boyfriend who is in the military. The free site is a forum where people can share stories and support others, much like Facebook, a place for people to connect. Allee is currently a Saddleback College student studying liberal arts and hopes to someday be a teacher.

Eddie Park ’09 (Music Producer/Piano), Peter McGinn ’09 (Mixer/Mastering), Andy Soliman ’11 (Cinematography) and Sooj Park ’11 (Editor/Video Producer) all attending the University of Southern California, produced a cover song, including kelly Christensen ’12, from the title track of the “The Hunger Games” movie.

Bethany Gorham ’09 has been blessed with the opportunity to be a part of the transformation of hundreds of third world inhabitants into improved and sustainable middle class communities. Bethany’s recent work with an international non-profit, Esperanza, based out of the Dominican Republic, has her using her business skills

to help the implementation of their water purification initiative. This initiative will provide clean and safe water for thousands of communities currently lacking a viable source. Bethany credits SMCHS with playing a substantial role in the development of her discipline, work ethic and commitment to success and following the path that the Lord has paved.
