3HC is very proud to introduce Joy Boutin as the 2016 Caregiver of the Year! The Association for Home & Hospice Care of NC (AHHC) presented its 2016 HOME (Honoring Outstanding Merit & Excellence) Awards at their 44 th Annual Conference & Expo during April. These awards recog- nize the excellence of individuals who are dedicated to promoting healing, extending life, and alleviating pain and suffering; all the while keeping families together and providing the great- est degree of freedom, independence and dignity possible. These are the true heroes in home care, home health and hospice, who serve on the front line every day, encountering numerous challenges often with a smile on their face and a fierce determination to persevere on behalf of their patients. Unfailing, deeply committed and loving, family caregivers are truly the unsung heroes of health care, which is why one of the HOME Awards is Caregiver of the Year. Joy Boutin was the very deserving recipient of this award this year. Joy is the family caregiver of 3HC’s pediatric hospice patient, Asher, whom Joy and her husband adopted at 3 months old after learning that she was receiving hospice care at a facility. They did this fully aware of the short life expectancy of Asher, as they wanted to give her the most love and attention they could possibly give. In Joy’s own words, “Everyone deserves love and a family, and I want her to feel the love of family for the remainder of her life here on earth.” Joy’s family welcomed this little girl with open arms. In fact, Joy is a stay at home mom to seven children, six of whom are adopted. She somehow manages to home school each of them and keep them involved in activities outside of the home, including sports, participating in ac- tivities with the adoption agency and being involved in their church. Joy keeps everyone on schedule and gets them to every place they need to be. Joy has gone above and beyond to learn and follow the instructions of the physician and the hospice team regarding the needs and the plan of care for her child. She has learned how to care for a G-tube, as well as administer medications and feedings. Taking care of a child with so many complicated medical needs while taking care of her other 6 children is no easy feat, but she manages all of this gracefully, all while managing her mother’s hospice care. She is such a selfless person, and all of her time is devoted to others to ensure they are taken care of and loved. Joy and her family have especially touched our team at 3HC. She serves as a reminder of why we do what we do every day, and what hospice is all about. Joy is truly extraordinary, and that should motivate everyone to care and show love for others just as she does. Joy and her family have given their baby a life and love she otherwise may not have known; and that is a remarkable gift, indeed.

3HC is very proud to introduce Joy Boutin as the 2016 Caregiver of the Year! The Association

for Home & Hospice Care of NC (AHHC) presented its 2016 HOME (Honoring Outstanding Merit

& Excellence) Awards at their 44th

Annual Conference & Expo during April. These awards recog-

nize the excellence of individuals who are dedicated to promoting healing, extending life, and

alleviating pain and suffering; all the while keeping families together and providing the great-

est degree of freedom, independence and dignity possible. These are the true heroes in home

care, home health and hospice, who serve on the front line every day, encountering numerous

challenges often with a smile on their face and a fierce determination to persevere on behalf of

their patients.

Unfailing, deeply committed and loving, family caregivers are truly the unsung heroes of health

care, which is why one of the HOME Awards is Caregiver of the Year. Joy Boutin was the very

deserving recipient of this award this year. Joy is the family caregiver of 3HC’s pediatric hospice

patient, Asher, whom Joy and her husband adopted at 3 months old after learning that she was

receiving hospice care at a facility. They did this fully aware of the short life expectancy of

Asher, as they wanted to give her the most love and attention they could possibly give. In Joy’s own words, “Everyone deserves love

and a family, and I want her to feel the love of family for the remainder of her life here on earth.” Joy’s family welcomed this little girl

with open arms.

In fact, Joy is a stay at home mom to seven children, six of whom are adopted. She somehow manages to home school each of them and

keep them involved in activities outside of the home, including sports, participating in ac-

tivities with the adoption agency and being involved in their church. Joy keeps everyone on

schedule and gets them to every place they need to be.

Joy has gone above and beyond to learn and follow the instructions of the physician and the

hospice team regarding the needs and the plan of care for her child. She has learned how to

care for a G-tube, as well as administer medications and feedings. Taking care of a child with

so many complicated medical needs while taking care of her other 6 children is no easy feat,

but she manages all of this gracefully, all while managing her mother’s hospice care. She is

such a selfless person, and all of her time is devoted to others to ensure they are taken care

of and loved.

Joy and her family have especially touched our team at 3HC. She serves as a

reminder of why we do what we do every day, and what hospice is all about. Joy

is truly extraordinary, and that should motivate everyone to care and show love

for others just as she does. Joy and her family have given their baby a life and

love she otherwise may not have known; and that is a remarkable gift, indeed.

Wings Camp for Grieving Children is a weekend

camp for youth, ages 8 to 16, who have had a loved

one to pass away. Wings Camp gives campers the

opportunity to make new friends with others who

have also experienced a loss, to find creative ways to

express their feelings, to experience encouragement

& comfort from peers, and to have some fun &

laughter! The camp is NOT restricted to children of

families served by 3HC, and children are not turned

away due to the inability to pay!

WHEN:

August

Newport NC

The 8th Annual Kitty Askins Hospice Center Angel Tree fundraiser was held this holiday

season. The stunning, hand-made ornaments continued to be made with love by a group

of phenomenal volunteers in the months preceding Christmas. Over 700 ornaments

were sold and displayed on the Christmas trees at Kitty Askins, with donations totaling

a net of $9,430 for Kitty Askins Hospice Center and the hospice programs of 3HC!

Picture a ballroom, filled with almost 500 people, with a sea of smiling faces, Mardi Gras beads, hats, boas & tiaras galore, all showing their support for Kitty Askins Hospice Center & 3HC. That’s what took place during the annual Mardi Gras Gala on February 20, 2016, at Walnut Creek

Country Club, where a net amount of $95,465 was raised for Kitty Askins Hospice Center and the hospice program of 3HC!

The evening began with the silent auction. Businesses, individuals, and artists from all over our service area generously donated items. This

year we had more items than ever before and better quality items!

The King & Queen of Mardi Gras fundraiser broke all previous records by a long shot, with a combined total of….$66,086!! Six couples participated this year. The couples were Stephen & Rebecca Barnes, Matt & Lauren Crawford, Steve & Gail Herring, Ralph & Jaime Kelly, Scott & Beth Painter and Taylor & Brandy Whitfield. The winning couple was Steve & Gail Herring, raising $23,344! The runners-up were Taylor & Brandy Whitfield, raising $16,646, followed by Ralph & Jaime Kelly with $12,398, Scott & Beth Painter with $6,315, Stephen & Rebecca Barnes with $4,399 and Matt & Lauren Crawford with $2,984! Not only did these couples raise a ton of money for Kitty Askins Hospice Center and our hospice programs, but

they also raised a lot of awareness to the services we offer.

The most anticipated event of the evening was the reverse drawing for $5,000! Luke Vail served as the emcee/DJ again this year. He was assisted by Casey Croom Miss Goldsboro, who drew the tickets for him to announce. The final five ticket holders chose to split the grand prize. Congratulations to the lucky winners: Pikeville Lions Club, Tommy Grantham, Mabel Yelvington, Cliff & Rhonda Greenup, and Marie Waller! As the winners celebrated their victory, guests were invited to dance the

night away.

This amazing fundraiser for Kitty Askins Hospice Center & the hospice programs of 3HC would not be possible without the help of wonderful volunteers and 3HC employees. It is with great pleasure that we extend a special thanks to the community volunteers, 3HC volunteers, and the members of 3HC’s Advisory Development Board. These people did a wonderful job and should be commended for their

efforts. Once again, the evening was a huge success, and everyone enjoyed the Gala.

Left to Right: Steve & Gail Herring, Stephen & Rebecca Barnes, Scott & Beth

Painter, Ralph & Jaime Kelly, Taylor & Brandy Whitfield.

Have you heard about the We Honor Veterans program? This program is a national aware-

ness campaign developed by the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO),

in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Affairs. The purpose of the program is to

encourage partnerships between community hospices, such as 3HC, and VA facilities to offer

the best care possible for veterans in the best manner & setting.

The program has four levels of commitment and 3HC has recently completed the first level,

earning the first star, which you can see in the program logo. 3HC is excited to be working

on the second level and cannot wait to earn the second star! What better group of commu-

nity members than our veterans to shine a light on! These men & women served our country

and now, it’s our turn to serve them!

Donations collected from November 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. For corrections, please contact 3HC’s Development Department at (919) 735-1387.

Remember the Angel Foundation? It is now known as the Butterfly Wings Program. The

mission of the program is to facilitate current 3HC hospice patients in realizing a special

dream or wish that would make a significant difference in his or her physical, emotional or

spiritual well-being. The new name was suggested by our employee, Leslie Church, who

drew his inspiration for the name from the Legend of the Butterfly Effect.

We hope you enjoy the stories below about our recent Butterfly Wings wishes that were

granted for two of our hospice pediatric patients.

In the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light to be found. Some would call this a bright spot. That’s definitely

what Xander was in this world; a bright spot. It only seemed right that a bright spot be added to Xander’s life, and that is ex-

actly what happened this fall. Xander had a wish to go on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC, with his mom, dad and especially his

older brother. Thanks to the Angel Foundation, with a blessing from his doctor, Xander’s wish was granted!

Xander and his family enjoyed a get-away at The Marina Inn at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach during the last weekend of

October. Once Pirate’s Voyage & Dinner Show and Ripley’s Aquarium heard about Xander and his wish, they happily gave the

family complementary tickets during their stay. During the trip, Xander was transformed into Captain Jack Sparrow at Pirate’s

Voyage and got to see Dory & Nemo swimming around at Ripley’s Aquarium. The family got dressed up as pirates to attend

the Pirates Voyage attraction where they enjoyed a pirate battle sequence, BBQ feast, and a special photograph session with

the pirates themselves! Ripley’s aquarium provided a relaxing experience for the family to take things at a slower pace, yet

still have a wonderful experience. The best part of this story…he was able to share this entire experience with his parents and

big brother! Thanks to his wish being granted under the Angel Foundation, Xander and his family were able to take a break

from the schedules of medical appointments and tests to create fun memories of just being a typical family.

The fun & memories didn’t stop at the beach though. Remember how magical Christ-

mas was when you were a kid? Well, thanks to Santa Clause and some elves, the magic of the season was brought to

Xander’s home a little early this year. On December 5th

, Santa & his elves delivered gifts to Xander. Being the special

kid that he is, Xander also picked out a necklace for his mom, a knife for his dad, and a Lego set for his brother that

was also delivered that night. Crystal Weideman, 3HC Social Worker, shared, “Xander’s face lit up like a Christmas

tree watching his family open up the gifts he had chosen for them.” Though Christmas is not just about Santa and

gifts, what a joyous night that was! It wouldn’t have been possible without one special elf that donated the gifts, but

we are certain Santa will leave something extra special in the elf’s stocking this year.

On December 31st

, Xander passed away peacefully at home. His mother shared, “Our hearts are broken but we know

he's celebrating in Heaven, and we are thankful for that. Please keep us in your prayers!” Though he is no longer a

bright spot here on Earth, we know he is shining even brighter from above.

A miracle, as defined by the Webster Dictionary, is a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or

scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency. A miracle. That is what Asher Boutin is.

When she was born, the doctors thought she would only live for 48 hours. This month, Asher celebrated her first birth-

day with her adopted family!

No one should die alone, that’s the Boutin family’s belief. When they heard of Asher’s situation, being born with a

prognosis of hours to live and no family, they knew they wanted her. Though the family already had six children, one

natural child and 5 adopted, they knew their family would not be complete without Asher. Asher’s mom, Joy, shared,

“We fully understand the gravity of Asher’s health, but we love our daughter so very much and celebrate each &

every milestone like lifting her head, cooing, eating independently and gracing us with a smile. She is thriving with

the love of a family and we are forever changed by having her in our lives!”

Thanks to the Angel Foundation, the family was granted a tremendous opportunity this past December to have fun & enjoy being together at Great Wolf

Lodge in Williamsburg, VA. This trip fit the family of nine perfectly! Joy shared, “This summer we discovered that our

princess really loves to swim. She relaxes her muscles while in the water, so it is also a therapeutic activity. And, as

you can imagine, our other treasures thoroughly enjoy water fun as well.” The Boutin family was “adopted” by the

Great Wolf Lodge’s Guest Services Team to make this a trip of a lifetime! The family was allowed to enjoy the water

park and check into their room early, which was decorated with stuffed animals and wolf ears for the family to wear.

The next day they were invited to enjoy a complimentary breakfast at the Loose Moose restaurant. That evening, the

staff had a surprise for the family waiting in their room… a private story telling time, read by characters from the

Great Wolf Lodge, with milk, cookies & treats to enjoy during the story. On their last day, the family enjoyed compli-

mentary bowling at Ten Paw Alley. Great Wolf Lodge also arranged for Asher’s parents to enjoy a couple’s massage

during their stay, in addition to providing a Paw Pass for each of the five younger children and a $100 Great Wolf

Lodge gift card for each of the two older children. As if that wasn’t enough, the family was also provided with a free

Shutterfly photo book, to commemorate their trip with lifelong memories!

If you would like to be a part of making dreams come true by providing financial or in-kind gifts, or for more information

about the Butterfly Wings Program, please contact Cierra Jorden, 3HC Social Work Manager at (252) 291-4400.
